I'm going through your channel like a rabbit hole, so please don't mind me lol. Watching life is beautiful is going to be a lot of work for me. Not only because it's 63 episodes long, but because I will crumble at parents who worry how their child is going to live instead of being ashamed at what other's might think of their child on the matter of being gay. That sort of unconditional love even while not understanding or being prejudiced is something that breaks me apart without fail.

This movie is one of my favourites (cause I love queer Taiwanese movies anyway) but it’s the melodramatic first love story that you can nearly taste, which makes your heart melt, so you can feel the heartbreak of the characters even more. The music score underlines the bitter sweetness as you mentioned, and I think this is what makes this movie hopeful but shattering at the same time cause of it’s portrayal of how fragile our human interactions are in a time of hardships and happiness the same and how reconnecting is not always the best or easiest way cause of how much time has passed and how we as persons have changed in that time. It makes us question what could have been and could have been done which then create a deep sadness or emptiness even. It just shows how valuable our time with the people we love and cherish is.

I've just recently become aware of Pluto (Thai sapphic drama). Watching it and smashing the like button (much like I did here) opened an absolute floodgate for other queer Thai and Korean shows- that are available for FREE ON KZbin LIKE WHAT! Besides Nimona and the Matrix- that aren't super explicitly queer (even if they are), I can't think of a queer series/movie that Ive enjoyed? It feels so few and far between. A part of that is whiteness in western contexts is so centered in queer media that makes it to the tv/theatre. Even Nimona and the Matrix! But this series? It's nice to actually get a break and see that no one is white for once. To actually see new perspectives, different societies, poc4poc romances etc. I haven't watched this video of yours yet, but I'm sure it'll be great! I am saving it for when I am in the mood to listen to a video essay! Thank you in advance for compiling all of this into a video!

hopping on here to say that i really appreciate all the work that went into this video, it was super interesting! out of the shows you discussed, i'd only seen coffee prince and loved it so much! there were a lot of queer themes and queer-coded characters in the show, and they were handled in a mostly sensitive way. i had no idea about life is beautiful or daughters of bilitis, and i was very positively surprised to learn about their existence. additionally, i think you're a great storyteller, i really enjoyed the structure and narration of the video and thought the information was presented in a very engaging way. you weren't just plainly stating events but weaving together a narrative with ups and downs. a great watch!! may you be blessed with all the delicious avocado toast in the world.

i see people keep mentioning i told sunset about you in the comments and i wanted to like that show and the sequel SOOOOO bad like i loved the tone and the cinematography and oh-aew is one of the characters ever but i just can't get past how unlikeable teh is. i couldn't fucking stand him. anyways. i feel like not me (which ironically finished airing literally like 2 weeks before kinnporsche came on air), even though it's not really about the mafia, was a much better "dark romance" than kp. the eclipse too, even though it can be pretty typical bl at times. which is crazy considering both of them aired on gmmtv which is SUPER hit or miss, but every now and again they really hit their mark. kp was such a let down :/

The one cut scene you show that is not from ITSAY is from In the Mood for Love. That movie changed how I look at life. So to see you use it in the context of BL was a wow for me.

Not feeling so alone now, lol. I watched KP just a few month ago because I stumbeled accross it repeatedly and got the impression that it was a really great show because it was so popular. And then I was just constantly wondering what the hell am I looking at 😮😮😮 because of basically all the stuff discussed in this amazing analisis, so thanks a lot. For me, the best thing of the show is having come across Jeff Satur and his music 😂

this video popped in in my recommended at such a serendipitous time - yesterday was the mewtul proposal. the impact that mewgulf and maxtul have had on the bl industry is monumental, but it's hilarious how differently their shows portray queerness and therefore how differently either show has stood the test of time lol

Hey, quick question, where did you get the video files of 'life is beautiful'?
@Pastellyn19 күн бұрын
Hey! The video clips are actually from bbackdra, an SBS retro drama highlight channel. For subbed episodes of LIB, try this link: vvv.dramacool.sr/video-watch/life-is-beautiful-episode-1

On one hand (by far the bigger hand) I am so glad you shared knowledge of this show. I've already watched this video twice. On the other hand I'm scratching at the walls of the internet trying to find English subs (which are no longer up on the usual suspects). *sigh* I guess I shall have to content myself with watching this video and the MVs other fans have made. Thank you once again for sharing about this show.

The old BL storylines, from Thailand and other SE Asian nations, are to please girls, young people and shareholders. Most are disappointing, with no great character development or long term story to tell. It is a disappointment to young LGBT people to see such exploitation, with no honest dialogue or scenes, that help them relate to someone they want to love. I never knew what to say or do, so that I could relate to another boy that I liked. No positive guides or encouragement ever appeared around me, to lead me to love another boy.

I rarely ever leave comments on KZbin videos out of shyness but this video genuinely made me emotional, coming from an Asian country that is as conservative in its dying media as it can go, I look at videos like this that highlight queer representation and I see a hope I can only imagine. It’s likely that acceptance in my own country will come in the generation that exists after me, but I hope that there will be a day where our own television will highlight queer identity as Korea or Japan has.

Korea’s outlook on lgbt is not great at the moment because majority is of an older demographic and there are a lot of homophobes that are like we are okay with but we don’t want to be around them like tf. But in korean media the rise of BL and the first woman who admitted to liking another woman on a reality show seems like there is hope for open mindedness. Even if you know BL actors often carry a stigma and most of the time its clear when there are actors who want an acting gig but are not comfortable in their sexuality enough to be close to the same sex romantically and kdramas play up the being gay as a misunderstanding gag that people are surprised but supportive about lmao.

Ty for the video, It does a goos job of creating awareness on the struggles the LGBT community goes through. Literally was tearing up at some points.

i feel like semantic error is sooooo good because the characters actually have personalities.... some old bls were trash because the point of the series was literally "being gay" and etc

Avocado Toast! This essay is excellent. I have always been curious/didn't know much about LGBTQ life in South Korea outside of the fact that it's not great. Coffee Prince is one of my all time favorite dramas with how Han Kyul *eventually* accepts that he loves Eun Chan despite this belief that she is a man. You were spot on on what that actually means in real society, but I thought Goo Young portrayed those emotions so well. May I ask where you got your footage for Life is Beautiful? It looks much more high quality then the jank site I found to watch it on :)

Got finished with my first Korean BL drama "To My Star 2". Honestly I wasn't expecting much but after a few minutes I couldn't turn the telly off and finished Season 2 on the very same day on a rainy Sunday. I fell in love with the actors and even stated doing researches over the Internet and KZbin Korea's LGBTQ+ rights and to my surprise I found out much has to be done yet. Browsing on KZbin I came across this beautifully made video by you... and wanted to thank you deeply for sharing to everyone ❤️ so much information about the real situation on Minority Humans Right in South Korea. Great work... and hope to see more of your videos.

i'm glad that it's getting better in recent years (and that even in times past there was some presence/representation), but personally i'll still never watch or support (mainstream) kdramas until queer characters are allowed to be main characters and have their love stories told too, and are not relegated to the separate "lesser" genre of BL or GL. until then though i urge people to support BL/GL kdramas. they're not at the level production-wise or running time-wise (and occasionally story or acting-wise) as mainstream cishet kdramas, but the only way to make it to that point is to show support for what is currently available, and prove that there is a demand for that content. and there are certainly a few gems there that are imo far better than mainstream het kdramas, so it's worth it.
