"We live in a time when intelligent people are being silenced so as not to offend stupid people" How you refer to your status in Thailand is your business not anyone else's, normally these people would have learned to keep quiet after being mocked by everyone around them but unfortunately the Internet has given them a vast echo chamber for their opinions. Ignore them, you are living your best life. Never apologise to them or try reason with them it only emboldens them to pursue.

Ryan, what you vlog and share with us is a gift born of your's and Damo's generosity to let us into your lives. What I especially love about Naked Guru and Life in Bamboo is authenticity. No pandering. No pretence. No fancy clothes or material nonsense. No elevating of self for validation. No product placement (save for the occasional surf Shark :-). It is utterly refreshing! I love witnessing the channels' evolution aligned with your's and Damo's experience as you interact, explore and grow with your family and environment. You have captured some genuinely beautiful moments and been generous to share them with us - for that, all I can give in return is gratitude. The way Damo looks and smiles at you. The way she carries and nurtures baby Hugo. Seeing Otis share a beautiful moment patting one of the dogs. The role Damo's mother plays to the extended family. The way you share your knowledge with Otis and encourage a life of growth and learning. These windows into your world are all gifts, that help me make sense of my own.

Hello Ryan. I was fascinated by your discussion regarding the terms "expat" and "immigrant". I was also bemused by some viewers' comments. As a copywriter for some 40 years and having a passion for books and reading ever since I was a child, it disappoints me when words are misinterpreted. "Expat", "Expatriate" or "Immigrant" are not derogatory words in of themselves. As with many words in the English language their origin was Latin. "Ex" as in "exeunt" meaning "out" "patriate" as in "pater" meaning "father" I.E. "out of the fatherland". I left England when I was 18 for Australia and for some years was officially a "resident of Australia" before becoming an Australian citizen. Arguably I emigrated from England to Australia and was therefore an immigrant. I have dual British and Australian citizenship but have now lived in Thailand for about 10 years. You are absolutely correct to point out that the Thai government make it very clear that we do not have citizenship and that we are here only on a visa. This means that we are not "immigrants" which infers residential status as opposed to visa temporary status. Some of those who are showing sensitivity to the use of the word "expat" would have struggled with my early Australian experience where the term " pommy ba@*@rd" was used often and depending on the inflexion could be nasty or warm and friendly.

We are all mammals and humans. In this particular case the Cambodian and Thai borders have seen thousands of years of fighting fornicating. I know many people on either side that identify opposite to their birth place. At the end of the day I love Asian culture regardless of birthplace. People in each country I've visited always claim to be unique from their adjacent sisters but I see more similarities than differences.

The polite Thai's also use the term ชาวต่างชาติ "Chao Tham Chat" interchangeably with Farang. I think that some people erroneously believe that the term "expatriate" challenges their patriotism to their home country. Patriotism and expatriatism are not the same. Expatriates simply live outside their country.

Expat here. I first visited Thailand in 2002 tagging along on a friends yearly family trip...culture shock in the most wonderful way. After another 8 years of autopilot life in America, I returned to Thailand, learned the language (read, write, text, etc), got married to a woman I had met on that first trip in 2002 (actually my friends younger sister-in-law...took almost 10 years before I could woo her...had to learn the language first as she doesn't speak English). We have a house in Nonthaburi, visit the family farm in Chaiyaphum very often (driving by the road to Buriram every time!), but today we are temporarily spending some time in rural New York helping out my folks. My wife and I have really come to enjoy your videos (especially the other channel). I'll never be a proper immigrant or citizen in Thailand either (despite wanting to very much), and will simply have to jump through the hoops every year for the rest of my life. Its a shame that there isn't at the very least a point in time (maybe after 5 years...10?) where the actual Thai citizen (the wife) is granted the respect of getting to live her life with her parter of choice without the yearly harassment of Thai immigration rules. There is simply no process resulting in a simple permanent residency which I can manage to finish. The work requirement is just too difficult (I've worked corporate in Bangkok for 18 months before, but getting to 5 years isn't going to happen at this point). Looking forward to where you take this second channel going forward. Cheers.

Hi Ryan, what sort of world do we live in where people criticise a persons self confessed title! Your explanation about the use of the word Expat for those of us fortunate enough to live in Thailand is entirely correct. We are not allowed (unless we go through the long, tortuous and expensive route) to become Thai citizens. therfore we cannot be Immigrants, much as we might want to be. Perhaps we should use the term "Alien" which Thai Immigration love to use on their forms and laws. 🙂 Anyway, I am fine with being a "Farang" and an "Expat". On a side note, all my younger Fillipino friends call me "Sir" Graeme and an American hearing this once asked me if I had been Knighted by the Queen. I had to explain that it was just a term of respect. As Shakespeare famously wrote in Romeo and Juliet “What's in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet.” As you so rightly say, we live as human beings regardless of race, colour, creed, sexual orientation, level of ability and 101 other points of difference. I believe that we are all equal under God and that we should celebrate diversity like never before. Of course there will be differences of opinion, because we are human and I respect the right of people to express freedom of speech, but equally, I don't necessarily have to agree with it. What a boring world it would be if we were all clones of one another. Thank you my fellow Expat. God bless you and your family always 🙂❤🙏

My opinion is that anyone concerned with many things Thai, needs to start with the geographical facts of China being next door and other large ethnic Muslim populations in Malaysia and Indonesia. The next set of facts to taken into consideration should be historical and economic and related somewhat to Japan, a few European nations and of course the U.S. For Thais, these issues are not just intellectual notions to be pondered in their spare time, but rather very visceral emotional exigencies as well. I pretty much agree with all that you well said. 👏🙏😊

Well said ! Fully agree with you , issue of Non Immigrant is clearly stated in the passport, if you look at the Thai pink ID card issued to’ ‘foreigners “ look at the back of it to point 3, a lot of retirees that this card is very restrictive to your movement and a lot of pink card holders are not aware! Correct Terminology is important how so many people will say ILLEGAL MIGRANTS instead of using the correct word ‘IRREGULAR MIGRANT’ as crossing a border to another country is not consider a crime as such. Love your VDO ! Keep it up excellent.

I think of different status of people of foreigners in a country. 1) Immigrant - someone to live and work in a profession, usually accompanied with working permit and social security rights, often final goal is to get lifelong living permit or citicenship 2) Expat - someone to live and work but usually the Visa and work permit (often limited in time and job opportunities), if you loose your job you got to leave the country. 3) Refugee - someone fleeing their country and looking for save heaven. Most times being very limited in rights to work and freedom of movement And of course there are countries which are more open to immigration (even though they are restrictive). But then there are countries which I call not immigration friendly - often in Asia. Then again, that is how I look at it and neither of the descriptions I use in a racists way - simply trying to differentiate for myself the different levels of rights people may be granted with that status. Surely there are differences from country to country but I think the decreased level of rights apply in the order I gave. Are countries right to limit access to their country? Why they do that? In my opinion there are different reasons but one of the most driving factors are: - trying to enforce taxes also „outsiders“ so they contribute at the same level as insiders from their earnings - controlling the professions coming in (to support demand for this professionals within the country)and keep out those that would compete with locals (in order to avoid social unrest) - fear of the unknown/ foreign (mainly based on race or nationality)

Usually, when someone is lashing out in KZbin comments they are just in pain themselves. I wouldn't spend too much time on it. Interesting point about the term expat. IMO, I think it comes down to the idea that if you move to Thailand, no matter for how long, you will never be a Thai. In terms of people potesting againt the word expat as a racial thing, I am reminded of the line in hamlet " The Lady doth protest too much" You are spot on. expat is a person who lives outside their native country. Exactly descibes the situation. Immigrant is a person who comes to live permanently in a foreign country. Most of us dont have the right to stay perminantly in Thailand. That is why we have Non Immigration status. As you say people should think about the context of things, And understand that countries and cultures are not all the same and right and wrong can be subjective based on your frame of reference. Just the thoughts of a Britsh Expat, who immigrated to Australia, became a citizen and is currently living in Thailand as an Expat. I enjoy the variety in the "new* rebooted channel. Are people that stupid , we are on one planet in a rather large universe we should see ourselves as brothers and sisters living on one planet. I Wonder if people realise the soul is colourless, music = Colorful life = Chill Music Universe .

Also: I really love _this_ channel. And [I am still watching] I am frankly shocked, that people might react like this to your wife for example. As I said, much love, please forward 🙂 PS. [you will know the movie, probably] The Dude: Well, yeah, that's just your opinion, man. 😎

i would imagine by now the people who would be watching you would be aligned with the spirit of your channel. weird some people are so sad they need to go out to pick a fight online. i feel for them but they just need to grow. the world is just imperfect, unfortunately, but i guess trying to impose a version of perfection can get catastrophic like history has shown.

Let's be honest Ryan we live in Thailand and this 'woke' bollocks simply would not happen here. The Western world has completely lost the plot if you ask me and glad I am away from it all.

That's the world we live in, Ryan. Some people have so much confidence in their opinion, that they feel they are right to contradict your expertise. I bless Social Networks everyday as they make me live, but they are also the new field of expression of morons!

I have hundreds of opinions, as you get older you realise a million people can blast your opinions out the water. So the only thing that matters is treat people well, try to be kind when you can. Im called a jock regular, im happy with that. I dont care if your black, white, yellow or purple as longs your decent. Cant believe living in your little heaven you get such sad comments. Keep up the good work. If people dont like your product they can vote with their feet

I prefer expat rather than immigrant as the latter has negative connotations.

never thought immigrant has negative connotations rather I see it as positive, people who migrate are usually very motivated, hardworking & sincere towards their new home

Never bring an intelligent response to keyboard warriors who are knee jerk 1st responders, brother. You are just not thin-skinned and media-led as some of your commenters are. ;)

I think to be an immigrant , you need to have permanent residence. Expatriate = living outside your native country. Most foreigners here are probably expatriates rather than immigrants. I actually have Thai citizenship and I don't really think of myself as an immigrant. Maybe I should celebrate being an immigrant? Excuse me while I go and pop open the champagne !

May I ask... Why are you still an expat and not a naturalised Thai? If you're married to a Thai, in theory all you need to get your passport is 3 years of continuous work in Thailand

Must be “currently” working and be accepted in the lottery I believe 🙏

@@thenakedguru I'm coming over to Thailand in a couple of weeks. Well looking forward to it!💪 I've read you need 3 years of continuous work + a couple of other things (the 3 years work is the big one though). I've always wondered if in reality it's as simple as hitting all the eligibility requirements, or whether there's a lot of extra unwritten difficulties? Thanks for the info, I've never heard of the lottery system, I'll have to research more on that

Hi Ryan unfortunately I think it’s the same the world over. My wife has now lived in the UK with me for 20 years and you wouldn’t believe the racist problems we have. Had you know the old score you bought your wife all that sort of rubbish sometimes unbelievably violent repercussions we have a son who is now 18, and my wife has always worked form when she came to the UK. And It was stamped in her passport no right to public funds which is probably okay. I asked her to come here so my problem that’s fine why people need to be so judgemental I don’t know. Maybe just jealousy, who knows?

Had to drop another comment however, perhaps a vlog on Thai dual pricing would be interesting. There is the official farang dual pricing and of course the un-official sort where menus featuring English can have inflated prices or the vendor triples their price when they see somebody like me walk up.
