i moved to Thailand in 2022 after visiting multiple times from 2001 onwards. I'd always planned to retire here but realised that that would mean living here only once I was old. I spoke to the company I worked for at the time and asked them if I could work from Thailand for 6 weeks, they agreed, this was then extended to 10 weeks, whilst I was here I found a remote from anywhere role (I work in tech), flew back to London, handed in my notice, then moved back just over 4 weeks later. Now married with a little one on the way and it feels like the best decision I ever made

Great perspective. We made the leap of faith and left US for Laos in early 2023. Best decision we ever made. “Semi-retirement” is a great way to define living and continuing to build options into your life. We came with some savings, passive income, and a path to hit pension kick-in down the road. Best advice I would give is don’t wait until it’s too late to enjoy life.

I (39y) work 6 months in the West and make my money there (self employed) and live 6 months in Thailand without any worries about money. We live a frugal life and enjoy life without much spending. Having a decent Thai lady that prefer a simple life is a must to be able to reach this. I retired after my divorce for 2 years and got bored. Only traveling around also gets boring after a while. Once i visited Thailand i figured out pretty fast that this will be my "home".

Caution - when talking about Retirement to a Country that has no Retirement Financial agreements with your own just be sure that your Monthly income netto will A. Satisfy that countries minimum required Income with some room on top as the requirement will always rise over time and your income not necessarily. B. That income will allow you to invest in adequate Health Insurance that covers emergencies, hospitalization and treatment of life threating diseases. Once you've nailed both of them you should be able to relax and just live at a level you can afford.

Im 38 and manage to live out here for most of the year. I work in Europe through summer (as a tour driver in the music industry) then spend at least 7 months every year in Thailand with my feet up. Its a great life and giving up my home in England 4 years ago was the best decision I ever made!

@@Wilko11 visa on arrival 30 days then a wknd in vietnam/cambodia/laos come back have another 30 days then do a visa extension get another 30 days...theres many ways 2 stay here 4 months as long as you dnt take the piss...i also spend alot of time in vietnam so its not 7 months straight in Thailand...Hanoi in N. Vietnam is alot cooler and its nice 2 take a break from the heat

i find your channel very inspiring ( i love our northern accents)i have arthritis and suffer in the uk cold so often travel to the sun I visited thailand 30 years ago after a year working holiday is Oz after they closed the coal mines. I lived and worked in southern spain for 12 years until my kidneys failed and was so much more healthy in the heat. now having had a transplant im able to travel again and we are planning to come over at the end of the month just getting some health stuff sorted.I am hoping the climate suits me and will definatley travel to the north,your lifestyle is just what im looking for..At 61 and not worked for years I still like to build cars and always have projects on the go just hampered with the weather and the cold. carry on making these inspiring videos after divorces deaths health issues i belive you should live a real life like you are doing,good luck mate keep it up Dave

Great vlog… yep the secret of a good retirement is to Lee yourself busy, no matter what it is, hobby’s , working part time, whatever is your thing. Working in a barbershop, I meet a lot of people who retire and the ones that are happiest are the ones that are busy doing what they enjoy

Great advice Ryan. You and your beautiful family give me a little peace when I watch you. I want to do something similar to what you’re doing but need about two or three years to build my capital back up after getting ripped off by family. Thailand just has an attitude about life that fits me more than the pointless aggression I’ve dealt with living in big American cities. My brother lived in Phuket to train for about six months and has never stopped talking about it since. A beautiful place with kind hearted people. Wish I could move today

Honest opinion, would $20k USD per year be enough to live comfortably? Not going out and partying all the time, but also not just being locked inside everyday. Just living normally, maybe go out to eat one meal per day and cook the rest at home. Maybe go out for a coffee in the morning after going to the gym

I was going to wait until I was 40 to move back to Thailand but at 36, office work is already beginning to take its toll on me. Back pains, weight gain. The wife, the kid and me have decided we are selling our house in UK and can't wait to get back to Thailand. Although we already wanted this before I discovered your channel. I would say your videos have been instrumental in accelerating that process, so thank you. I don't regard the move as retirement but between home schooling and running a small farm, I don't expect to have an enormous amount of free time for other businesses. But I don't recommend anyone to move to Thailand with a plan to relax and sip cocktails in a hammock all day. That life will be unfulfilling and will lead to all kinds of vice.

I personally think generally people shouldn’t ever plan to retire per se. I think people should plan to retire from corporate life asap where humans have been relegated to units of productivity that is to be bled dry which is very unhealthy. Get out of that asap, but have side hustles / jobs that are not particularly arduous to keep you going, active and your mind ticking. So many people in the west go from one extreme to another, where they are in corporate life for too long and when they finally retire they have nothing left in terms of health or desire to do other stuff, and it’s not healthy

Ain't that some true wisdom right there! "Guru" indeed! Great life quality you guy's have established for yourselves! I can Imagine, though, that when you "make the jump" as early as you guys have, that luring question "are we missing out, stuck here in the middle of nowhere" repeatedly hounts you, and you get tempted from time to time to, perhaps, go back to your past life style? But, I can also imagine, that, when that [miss placed] initial "panic" settles, you [again... and again] arrive at that, actually, you are living your dream in that "Ark" of yours? Because, the way I see it, the biggest mistake you could do is to get lured back to "corporate" and throw away all that wonderful stuff that you have built up! BUT, as you, wisely, say: For us that haven't - YET - made the "jump": an even bigger mistake would be to postpone it to far, and risk that it might either never happen, or it will be sub optimal due to age and health issues... Personally, it has been part of the "master plan" for a very long time, and we (me and my Thai wife) have kind of been living with one leg in Thailand the whole time...We might not do 100% Thailand, but perhaps more like "60-40" (in favor of Thailand)...because as you say: you never "really" retire...I managed to jump "corporate" a long time ago and run my own shop, but, still - hopefully it's just one or a couple of years more, and we'll "JUMP". Before it's too late... :-) There is actually research suggesting that time passing as perceived by someone in their mid 50's moves about 17 times faster than it does for a kid. It kind of speeds up, like that final swirl down the drain when you empty your bath tub... So, better not wait for that swirl - or one might find that the jump happened too late, and be missing out... This (European) winter, it will only be a quick visit, but we HAVE to catch up some time when we stay longer - i just feel that we would have so much to talk about (not the least egg laying chickens!)! We're not far away from Buri Ram... All the best, and congratulations on your life choices!

Spot on Ryan, best rule of thumb I live by is it is going to cost you 300,000 baht a year as a single person living a simple life in rural Thailand, that focuses you on how long to expect to be able to live here and to cut out the unnecessary fat to maximize your time

@@Lifegoal2030 Honest answer is that depends on you, your lifestyle, expectations and how adaptable you are, the only real way for you to find out is to give it a go for 6 months to a year first before making that final decision. My yearly living budget is comfortable and based on a single person already established here for many years, if part of your expectations is to find a long-term Thai partner, obviously the costs will increase depending on that person (and family) needs. Best advice is to take a trail run, always rent, be honest, don't make rash commitments and keep your financial situation to yourself.
