Pos5 is a role with a lot of CONTROL to it. Your cores can't afford to miss farm, so you're setting the pace of your lane. You need to decide when to harass, when to pull, when to pressure for a kill, when to roam, when to stack. As the game goes on your cores come online, but you're still a major pace-setter. You're most likely in charge of your team's vision, which will determine what order you take objectives in. If you've got saves, you decide who lives. If you've got disables, you decide who dies.

Literally anything that can "somehow" stay the lane and be valuable with 1-2 cheap items. As example DK need only blink to have almost 100% gurantee 3,5 seconds stun on initiation, he can organise some push with ulty and maxed passive, and he generaly dont suffer on lane unless its something crazy like carry axe. Other examples would be Axe, Pango, Centaur, Spirit Breaker, Tide, Earth Spirit.

Really ,really great analysis Jenkins. I have 11k hours and still a 2k player. Yes i play 11 games in a row till i get tired and lose all gained mmr but you nailed it. You really nailed it: a self-sacrificial coordination-relied non-scaling support is not gonna win games even if you played well. Better term for"Mario" heroes are proactive picks. Those that can be first picked, are self sufficent and aren't hard countered by many heroes. Something like Broodmother would be a reactive pick - extremely good if enemy doesn't counter it, awful if they do. In pubs people often first pick reactive heroes and get dumpstered even before the game begins.

For support, I find dark Willow is always viable. He mentions shadow shaman. Lotta people say jakiro or cm. I like puck as well for about any position, if you know how to play puck. Juggernaut is a good Mario carry.

ET is usually played support in competitive, but can actually carry really well with just echo, silver edge, and BKB thanks to his W buff and passive. Plus, even if you don't manage to get those items his abilities still allow him to impact the game anyway. Plus it's funny to watch agi carries die in two hits from his briefcase.

There is no such thing as tanker independent of networth difference. Tide with boots, vanguard, and blink at 10 min is almost unkillable. The same hero with those at items at 30min can barely survive. So you will be a lousy "tanker" after starting at pos 5 and trying to become the offlaner 20 min later.

5:53 was a previous legend ranked and stopped playing for long, when I came back i ranked at guardian level, honestly this is one of the ranks where you'll get imprisoned in. I agree with this wholeheartedly, earlier I had my turbo pub game where the enemy was easy, they had a bunch of magic heroes and we had a good draft of carries and np. (I chose silencer) I noticed that we didnt had any support, so i said I'd go support which I did, however, the rest of our team didn't exactly take the role that they chose to be. We had a feeding TA whom I've given her a ton of early farm, but when the time came to fighting, would be either passive and watch or run away with FULL HP/MP alongside me (who was near death.) (Late game, ta would have nonsense items and kept buying and selling her blink dagger for no reason.) We had a NP who kept trying to push mid. Told him to push either off or safe, he would but 'only' when the enemy was there. (Also, he never once came to teamfight) We had a LC who kept starting fights without the group, never pinged, never said anything then after she solo fed, said "I pinged, team sux". (She had done this 3+ times.) Me trying my best to buy wards, trying to be a Pos 4. I was doing alright but I could never get the team to "group". And lastly, we had a Void who never once wanted to chrono. Would only chrono without the team to solo kill people. And would prefer to feed and fight with the lc rather than actually teamfight. Long story short, we lost and void/lc kept pointing each other the finger for who fed/was the most useless between the 2.

All this is why Winter Wyvern is my main. Shes always usefull. She scales with the enemy team, as well as your own. And shes very flexible in the items you can build on her. Only two problems are that shes not a good farmer, and that she absolutely needs coordination. Cause both you or your team can realy mess up if she ults or cold embrases in the wrong moments, or they react wrongly to her actions. Luckily, theres a voice chat. And luckily, I have an always maxed out behavior score, and get put together with people who dont abuse the mic xD

1- pick heroes that make up for game needs (e.g. pushing) 2- pick heroes that scale because pub games go late and there is a lot of space on the map 3- pick heroes that fulfil the duties of that role 4-do not pick heroes that are countered by the same heroes that counter your team's hovered or picked heroes / pick opposed to your team's weaknesses 5- pick "Mario heroes" if you have to pick first and might be countered, because they will always be generally effective (tip for offlane specially) Bonus tip from me: don't try to copy pro level strats because they might not work in you level (IM LOOKING AT YOU COLLAPSE MAGNUS SPAMMERS)

I am SO happy someone finally discuss this. I had a huge argument on that on one of BSJ “how to play X hero” video ( i think it was slardar). He was suggesting to not pick certain items that make absolute sense in a game where you have a carry that will carry, a support that support and so on. In most of my games, if i play offlane i most likely HAVE to build as a carry if I have a decent lane. If I don’t, more time than not we lose. Slardar in a coordinated pro team and slardar in a archon pub game should not be played the same .You cannot rely as much on your teammate in pubs, they will do stupid things. People look at hero builds of pro game and think that’s how the hero must be played. Finally someone address this, it should be said more often.

Dark Willow is the ultimate pub support. Can control the enemy 3 different ways, solo kill with bedlam, immunity from right-clickers (+ targeted spells) and level 25 attack speed with aghs is damage you can't ignore. Also, she has FIVE spells!!

Agree, but what he means is in pub, in the end it would be better to prolong the games, for a good reasons: late game war tends to end in 3 to 5 man wipe, and thats when buyback starts coming in. Those buybacks creating a gold gaps, and in the end the team with high gold lead would win the war easier and push faster after that. The keyword here is "chaos", since most of the times we hv low to zero coordination starting from drafting phase. This would be different if u playing with ur frens or one team counter the others pretty hard.

Shoto is a subcategory of characters that wield a fireball, an uppercut, and a tatsu, but that doesn't make them all a "jack of all trades" which is what Ryu is designed to be. Akuma is a shoto, but he's far, far from jack of all trades; in fact he's a glass cannon whose weaknesses easily get taken advantage of by the competent opponent.

I do this all the time and it's crazy how true it is. Typical game for me, I play pos 5. I completely BULLY the 3+4 and win the lane superhard. My core is fat as fuck and they got close to nothing. Suddenly my core dies for some reason, since if you wanna win the lane you can't stand by the pos 1 for the entire laning phase. He tilts, and suddenly the lane is lost. You really sometimes need to play pubs with the mindset that you are going to win it alone while contributing as much as you can on the premise of you doing the best for YOU (in case you truly KNOW you are better than your peers.) Gonna go back to play DW pos 5 now kek.

So essentially as support based on this video and Experience. Make sure you pick a hero that able to do multiple things, Essentially heroes like Shaman or Jakiro is a good example here. They can push, they can farm, they can scale really well on the late game by either pushing and dealing lots of damage in one fixed place. The problem with pubs is that support get too attached to supporting and sacrificing themselves. You'll need an item regardless the position you're in. Building safe item is essential for every support the followed by 1/2 more core item to counter enemies heroes. I played a lot of games in lower rank with my friends. The support always stuck making a core item straight away ignoring a way to safe their cores. Then they tend to pick hero that is technically rolling a dice such as pudge or Mirana. Or something that is ridiculously high skilled pos 4 rubick/pango or something that require a good communication such as AA/Grim. After checking my Ancient/Divine bracket stats, it is true that most of my win come from heroes that can actually do something in early to late game.

if you solo MMR, you would be more likely to lose than anything, especially if you get outdrafted because everyone becomes too egoistical: 1) Hard Carry that believes he has to be babysit 24/7 and whatever mistakes he made isn't counted & if he dies alone while getting ganged, he'd blame the supports no matter if they are late or TP-ed to the wrong lane instead of prioritizing him. This Hard Carry type of player usually just pick whatever they want no matter what enemy picks; for e.x: enemy picks PA yet our carry will still pick Sniper / Drow for whatever reasons, and ran off to jungle neglecting his lane when he dies more than 3x due to *TILTING.* 2) Mid Laners that do not bother to rotate up & down despite of maximizing his potential for reaching lv 6 faster while others aren't yet. Reason? Because they have no items yet, no Daedalus, MKB, Butterfly, etc etc; and if they start dying, they'd blame supports for not rotating either, whilst considering the fact that maybe.. *MAYBE* both lane is struggling as well! Or the fact that they're too lazy & greedy to spend 50g just to purchase a sentry and deward Mid lane.. 3) Offlaners that do not exactly pick a tanker hero; instead something weird like Luna, Juggernaut, etc; despite knowing the fact that we already have a Hard Carry. And after 30mins passed, you just got to realize that they're building their item as if they're the *HARD CARRY.* 4) A Supporter that won't rotate, stacks camp, won't bother to pull NC or even to ward/deward with reasoning such as they don't have gold or they need to make some other items first, which after they finished making it, they would still not purchase it until it is too late. Or even a supporter that prioritize to *SAVE THEIR OWN LIVES* when getting ganged up. 5) Grievers, people that usually gets angry and intentionally feed themselves, hoarding every wards or sell off their items and afk at base after receiving only several comments from teammate. If you can't even handle the pressure, why bother playing MMR in the first place? 6) Basically, *OUTDRAFTED* because everyone is too egoistical with whatever hero they want to pick instead of counter picking them. Like why would you forced Supports to pick first if by the end of the day, you would still pick Hard Carry Drow/Sniper? (when the enemy's hard carry is PL or Troll on the other side) 7) *NO COORDINATION* , well to be fair, they aren't your friends or teammates; they just happened to spawn in the same roster as you, so you can't expect having a Topson suddenly solo carry you right, while the other 4 are baboons. One baboon can be playing very aggressively while the other baboon is the calculative & defensive type of player; therefore 1 initiate attack while the other one was late behind to follow up because he was worried about getting ganged due to fog of war / no vision and the rest of the lane are missing as well. In the end, the one that initiates die stupidly and gets mad at the other one because he didnt *"die together?"* Or was it because you get to survive while he don't..? And after several miscommunication he just gave up and vowed to leaving you alone cause he dgaf anymore *"a.k.a TILTED."*

i remember before the immortal rank, Divine was the highest and i was ~3000 leaderboard with a 5.8k mmr (eu server) i quit at the time, and came back to the game recently, calibrated Archon 2, somewhere around 2.5k mmr. followed your instructive videos on how this game should actually be played, meta, etc. and now im 5.3k and climbing even further thanks to you (Y) Hope to see more videos like those ones in the next patch (which is soon to come before the next TI) Cheers!

I'm and Oracle player in 1.5k mmr bracket (high guardian, low crusader) and I lose a looooooooooooot. My mechanics and understanding of the hero is great but you can't do much with such a defensive hero. Carries generally wanna fight always in this bracket and don't farm. Better heroes are Shaman and warlock etc, just like Jenkins explains in this video. Excellent video!

The pos 5 thing is true, I just had a game where the WD kept the game going for another 39min with shard and aghs it was disgusting. He was a pos 5 and we had to tell our axe to call and lock him first. Game went like 70min and we won in the end but man. That WD kept their team in the fight for so much longer than they would have without him.

Tbh, i climbed from herald 1 to guardian 4 as a position 4 or 5 support. So yeah, I agree with jenkins when he said that not being able to win as pos 5 is bullsht.

Best example of competitive vs pub is when you read the patch notes and see a line that says something like "antimage strength gain reduced from 1.6 per level to 1.4 per level" Now the average dota 2 player is going to look at this and go "what an insignificant change" whereas a competitive player is going to look at this and go "this hero is now literally unpickable and my team is fucked for the season"

Totally agree, I like Oracle, but he doesn't work in pubs. I don't think players know how his ult works, nor his disarm/100% magic deal. Too much coordination. Which is why death balls are so popular and successful. Just have 2 tanks and some ranged heroes with stuns run at the other team.

honestly a tip i have is use ur comms, i know not all people will listen but if youre giving good calls like do rs after a fight or push alot of players will hear and help you rather than doing it and expect them to follow your instinct tell them

You're spot on. I'd also like to believe that if the game isn't going very well in the early game that the team of 5 randoms start to doubt each others abilities. ( This shotcall my teammat to smoke gank them in their triangle feels so bad cause my team dunno what to do in the fight blah blah. )

As pos 5: ban axe, pick dazzle, rush guardians. Got me from low guatdian to mid archon in a few weeks. Its hard to lose if you as pos 5 heal like 20-30k HP.

its just now I've seen this video, but let me tell you (if you read the comments... or for others), that my #1 problem with this game, that if I dont play ranked matches (the frustration in ranked games is so high, especially in lower ranks) and just want to play a normal game (you know... just for fun) so after more than 3,5K games (yes, I dont play that much, just sometimes for fun) the matchmaking system still puts me together with new players, and this new players arent smurfing the new acc or something, but real rookies. they have 0 understanding about this game, missing the basics (like what a ward is, or the roles, or neutral items, or how to use the chat...etc) and they pick carry heroes all the time. sometimes I can talk some sense into them (really rare occasions), and explain how they should learn the game, but mostly they just ignore me, or trashtalk back, and as you said, even Nikobaby couldnt carry some games... so basicly what you said is true, but only in some cases. I mean, when I started to play dota, I had to play some games v bots to learn the basics, and after that I could play normal games (and after maybe 20 normal games I could play ranked), and now there is a game for new players, but if they install this game, its not their only option to play (which should be for at least 20 games), so without knowing anything about this game (just because they saw a cartoon), the matchmaking system put them together with me, because I dont play ranked... and that is the #1 issues with this... I think (and 1 more thing, why I dont like to play ranked, if you play role game, and you've got the offlane, if you dont pick certain heroes for that role, your team just loosing their minds and "report him!" and things like this, even if we win the game... and if I've got the support or hard supp role, thats 99% sure, that my carries new players without understanding or just noobs... so I rather take my chances, that maybe I will have a good team, and play a normal game, than try the ranked... and when I'm lucky and have a not that bad team, and the other team has the new or the really bad players, and there is 1 good player, we always recognise each other, and wish to the other luck for the next game... same if I have the new or bad players with me...)

i will make it simple, #1 dont counter your teamates hero, ex : when your team have fast paced gameplay hero (shaman, lesrac, mars, wr, lion) dont pick hard carry, it will ruin the paced, and as soon as your enemies have counter spell item, your support became useless and you will play like 3 vs 5. #2 if you are a carry player, dont make a call when you only have shitty item. #3 be independent, your 4 teamates not your mommy. #4,read map with your eyes and brain. #5 when you know you dead a lot, dont blame, instead of blame say "sorry" and evaluate yourself in the process. the mechanics skill can be learn through the game, but toxic mentality brings you no where, in game and reality. thx jenkins

last time i played dota 2 was around 2018 and i played it after 1 year hiatus from the game. Picking Shadow Shaman as my hero, we could end the game around 40 mins into the game, but this certain Anti Mage keep farming while the dire ancient have half hp, it turned 90 mins game and our team lose, never touch the game again since then.

5:51 Agreed! Bulshit! Pos 5 is the most powerfull position you can take! Theres only one thing you cant do. Which is win the game. But you can do EVERYTHING ELSE!!! And you have 4 teammates to do the one thing for you, that you cant do. So all you do is make sure they do that!!! Theres a reason 90% of captains play pos5. The ONLY place where you cant realy gain mmr with pos5 supports is low herald. Thats it. Everywhere else, pos 5 is THE deciding position! Thats it.

5:54 the irony in this is me as a main pos 4 player actually win more and easier on pos 5 because I have the bad habit at getting extremly pissed off by my pos 5 playing like a pos 4 (especially if its a game where a carry player plays pos 5 because of role Q games) and then I play worse because it pisses me off how bad this role is getting played and on pos 5 I am more chill and I am very good at dewarding/warding so I usually just out vision the enemy most of the time and win without having farm (or getting extremly farmed with techies pos 5 because I stop splitpush with mining one lane down and switching up lanes so the enemy dont know where I am (depends also on which tower you should protect) :D I sucks to say that but if I wanted to climb I guess I had to play pos 5 more..
