I don’t do a career summary… summary is more for those with 5-20 years experience? Isn’t that right? Instead I do an Objective, because I’m new to the field after deciding to change careers, an objective indicates you are new to the field and keen to be trained and develop your skills while on the job. Because I changed careers, I do try to keep my resume to one page. To do this, I make sure that my studies and work experience/volunteer work is all related to that one job/career I’m applying for and only list keywords and things that the job advert is explicitly looking for in a candidate. I feel like why I’m failing is because of the dot points of my “tasks/accomplishments/humble bragging” are all over the place. I changed my career into support work, so I can’t exactly use numbers to humble brag about ways I “improved” the workplace with sales % or whatever. Support work is basically supporting and caring for people, you can’t exactly brag about that lol it’s factual and to the point and doesn’t involve numbers. Another one is “References”. To list your references or not? To keep mine at one page, I don’t list mine, and also if they really want an interview with me, then I can better prepare my reference that they might get a call soon from a hiring manager. If they’re not going to interview me, then it’s non of their business who my references contact info is. Privacy. Every other past job I’ve had in hospitality or retail, the only reason I got those jobs was because I knew someone who already worked there who could bump up my resume to the hiring manager to score an interview. I feel like getting a job has always been about “who you know” not what you know. As of 2020, I know no one and I’m struggling to sell myself through my resume. Lol 😂

So for example, what if you're applying for very entry level positions and have no relevant experience to it yet, would putting jobs on your resume like being a sales associate be useful if you list some transferable skills you've learned? Good video!
@independentconsultant4 жыл бұрын
Even when you get relevant experience, your job should always be to find transferable skills and match them with you target job, so yes! Find skills you learned as a sales associate and market them for your future role!

Entry level jobs all depend on your economy. 2 months ago I applied to 200 entry level busser jobs with my application stating that I’m a 16 year old with 4 days dishwashing resturant experience. I got over 20 call backs. When to 3 interviews and stuck with the best option. All because I live in a booming Indiana economy.

The ATS is SOOO lazy and total b.s.! Yes, Word documents can get messy, but even with that online program you mentioned, it gets pricey and becomes unnecessary. Companies ask for PDF’s all the time and have still gotten back to me for an interview. Additionally, there are websites that actually require a PDF and in creative fields, your resume needs to pop more. Something that gets annoying to do in Word. Meaning your resume looks boring. I have seen mixed things about career highlights and intros and what not. I still prefer not to put them as the consensus out there is to not use them.

For many, a "career summary", or "list of accomplishments", might be the very thing that gets you passed over by HR if you've actually accomplished nothing much since leaving school. Further, if you're a person who has quit a number of previous jobs because of "a toxic boss", or "a toxic work environment", hiring you would certainly appear to be problematic to HR.

Thanks for the video! I am totally over applying, applying, applying. This is the most frustrating thing for me! I’ve been an English teacher for the last 6years and am now trying to get OUT, completely! Like I don’t want to do anything related to this anymore. I’ve done what I wanted and want to move on. So obviously I’ve had to get creative with “selling” my attributes like changing “teacher” to “educator” for example. However, I feel like people see “Educator” on my experience and immediately go “Nope!” Because they assume it’s babysitting when it has a lot of administrative things with it which I include on my resume. I mean I go into data management system, Microsoft, google suite etc because that is literally something I had daily used but something is just not working. I do have that career section but I’m going to look into tailoring the first few bullets to each job. I’m just worried because I primarily use Indeed and there’s often a variety of jobs that I’m qualified for but have different things they’re looking for so I feel like if I try to tailor that section I’m going to end up with 10 different resumes! Is that normal!!?
@independentconsultant3 жыл бұрын
Hey Kevin! I understand your situation! A good strategy can be creating a "master" resume with 80% of the experience and skills you want to show off, then yes tailor that remaining 20% for each job posting. So your resume should be a little different for each job you're applying too. Also, from my experience, when changing industries or careers, networking will work way better than indeed. Reach out to people on LinkedIn working at companies you're interested in and ask them how they did it!
