The first version of Mickey Mouse is now public domain and the rest will follow as the years pass. The trademark of Mickey Mouse remains property of Disney until they eventually go bust. This means you can't use him as a business mascot or logo, but you can use the expired copyright images of him in art, provided you don't use him in anything that uses trademark until Disney is no more...and judging from the way they are going with their poor decision making and constant destruction and failures of once beloved IPs that they brought and (ahem) "modernised," it won't be long now.

While I do like the classic looking modern Mickey designs (which I think is actually getting revamped yet AGAIN,) I completely see the issue with how that design, even if it’s getting replaced already (probably with a design even closer to the original, as the one beforehand does have some details that set it apart from the Steamboat Willie design, making that style enough of it’s own thing) could very easily be used to keep doing their anti-public domain acts, ON TOP of the trademark of the actual OG design with his use in the LITERAL OPENING LOGO FOR THEIR IN HOUSE (OF MOUSE) ANIMATION STUDIO! (Side note, I 100% agree that it’s much better to enjoy something while still acknowledge the sins and issues of it than trying to willingly overlook those issues, blindly trust everything related to that thing, or worse…shun people for either enjoying something, or criticizing something, and trying to say that enjoying something from a problematic source makes you just as evil, even if you agree that the source is bad, or vice versa! I love my fair share of Disney stuff, both old and new, as much as the next guy, but I’m not ignoring any of their problems! And this is true for everything. Not just Disney!) Anyway, with the OG Winnie the Pooh in the public domain, I might see if I can create a sci-fi spy thriller animated mini series with the villain being a mouse as a not-so-subtle jab at THE mouse! Also, I don’t think I’ve watched ANY Disney movies this year, at least in theaters. (Certainly not Marvel or Star Wars.) and I might go see Wish, but even then that’s a huge maybe. I want to give my time to creators and studios that really deserve it! Big studios, yes, but also plenty of indie projects, as I want to help grow the indie animation scene as much as possible! (And while I’m all for loosening the mouse’s grip on public domain, and encouraging people to allow others to use their works (within reason, and depending on the work) I also feel that in the meantime, it’s just as important to support completely original (relatively speaking) projects that aren’t based on existing source material or IP!)

@@drewo.127 I wanna say 8 out of the 9 (maybe Seven of the 9 if I'm being Harsh) stories are pretty good and interesting Takes on some slight Horror in the Hundred Acre Wood. With only one Story just looking like it shares more in common with Blood and Honey than Winnie the Pooh in its creation only paying lip service to the premise for a different story. But Overall its very interesting And they cant keep EVERY MICKEY in Trademark Circulation. This is a Problem that will only Compound itself with time and successive years.

I find it very hard for someone to use Mickey in their stories. I think it's almost impossible to use him without huge major problems even if you're a small independent creator

Honestly, I think it would be wise to make him look legally distinct. You could argue that Mickey's iconic 3 circle head, along with those ears that look the same from any angle, are covered by trademark law. So, change the ears. Sure, they're Mickey's most distinguishing feature, but if you want to be safe, I'd say change them.

You see, I thought much the same with Pooh: They released that movie...Christopher Robin, was it? And I thought it was a move to have more Pooh out there in case somebody wanted to do the movie. "Grown up Christopher Robin faces Pooh, adulthood) is an obvious angle that somebody absolutely was gonna do, probably with that exact name, if you think about it. In truth it probably prevents a movie like it from happening (if only in a "it's been done already" sense) but obviously it doesn't prevent somebody from coming with a horror version or a body horror videogame or a straight adaptation of the book (that's a horror even if it's not trying). I think it's much the same with Mickey. That's the beauty of Public Domain: even when you've had a property for 100 years, somebody's gonna be able to come at it from an angle you didn't. Personally I liked Mickey Mouse well enough as a kid, but I can't remember a time that I wanted to work on Mickey Mouse. That I had ideas FOR Mickey Mouse. But because their copyright fuckery prevented me from using characters I WOULD have, you know, I kinda have to. Out of spite.

7:05 The slits in his eyes aren't meant to be pupils, they're meant to be shines reflecting light. The black part of his eyes are his pupils, with the area around them out to his fur and muzzle being the sclera, though they don't draw any line separating the eyes from the muzzle.

dont forget: Herlock Sholmes! :3 way back in the day, an unofficial crossover between Arsène Lupin and Sherlock Holmes was written by Arsène's author. buuuuuut he ran into legal issues and had to rework it. the solution? swap the initials and make it legally distinct. yes, we have a bizarro version of Sherlock called Herlock Sholmes. yes, legally he's a unique character. and yes, he's public domain now as well. :3 sooooooo you could feature him as a gag character in your story! ^u^ might as well right? the fact that Sherlock has his own Wario is absolutely something that should be used to comedic effect. XD just make sure you dont pull from Ace Attorney's version of Herlock Sholmes, the handsome blonde haired detective who relies on others to improve his deduction skills.

I think he meant to say "white gloves are an element of minstrel shows and blackface and they chose to add them because of that" but he didn't explain it. it's an unfortunate fact from cartoon history, eventually it became "a look from cartoons" as it kept getting iterated and that type of minstrel humor died out but that's where it comes from.
