Time and patience is definitely what we need in language learning. It's a lifetime kind of learning that doesn't have a specific finish line. Another reason for me why we fail in it is the lack of resources or the use of wrong resources/learning method. You may spend lots of time and patience in studying a language but there can be a time where you're tempted to give up because you don't feel like having progress in your studies. Take some time to at least research and look for the best method that's both flexible and effective for you and your situation when you feel like your current study methods ain't working. To do this, patience and time is really what you need plus the genuine desire to learn the language😊

I've actually benefited from taking a short hiatus in learning my target language. It removes a lot of stress from yourself and kind of always you to reset and relax. You'd be surprise what you remember and how much more you improve once you come back. Not only that, you'll feel a lot more motivated

I think another reason for why we fail in learning a language is because we don't choose well enough the language we study. So i think we need to have a reason aside from "i find it interesting" when choosing a language to learn.

When I started learning Korean about 2-3 months ago I knew that the process wouldn't be easy, so i just studied in different ways to find what fit me and then before I knew it, I remembered certain hangul syllables without much thought and now can differentiate the sounds that felt impossible for we to do before

Unfortunately, most schools just don't really know how to teach languages, so most of us after "learning" a language at high school are sure that we don't remember the language because there is something "wrong" about ourselves, that learning a language is just "not for us" But, it's not the reality. Most schools just don't know how to teach languages, and they make us believe that the problem is us ("I wasn't serious enough") the truth is that most of them are just too focused on old fashioned methods that were built mainly just to teach you how to use a dictionary, or if you are lucky, how to read and write. But language learning isn't only reading and writing, languge learning is MAINLY speaking and listening. Speaking and listening are more natural activities, when we are babies we first learn (before school) how to speak and understand our native language, and when we reached a certain level of speaking and listening fluency (around 6 years old), only then we start learning reading and writing in this language (at school), and this "method" is the best method, we are all native speakers in are native languages, aren't we? :) Bottom line - I'm sure after understanding how language learning REALLY works it's much easier to be motivated and learning more effectively the language we want to learn, and get to fluency after a while, and not wasting 10 years of learning without reaching it.

This is such a wholesome and encouraging video! Very judgement free and packed with good ideas on how to motivate oneself. I really appreciate the fact, that you speak to the viewer as 'normal' person, who understands their problems, not as a show-off polygot who has absolutely mastered her languages. Much love from a German currently trying to study Spanish (:

Great video! I try to expose myself more by making it easier to access content in my target language. For an example, my bluetooth headphones are always by my side so that I can easily plug them in and listen to a podcast while going to grab a snack in the kitchen. By the end of the day I'll always have finished at least one episode

I am in the process of learning French and I must admit sometimes I'm lazy :P but I also enjoy it so I'll put no pressure on myself. Have fun in Spain ; )

I don't give up on language learning all the time since I am the person that studies a lot of languages. KZbin videos definitely helped me a lot to practice my listening skills and try to repeat the sound from I've heard. I, as a native English speaker, make good enunciations when I try to learn different languages around the world by listening and repeat the sound of the word or phrase. In addition, I also practice a lot of regional English accents around the world such as British, Australian, Canadian, Scottish, New Zealand, etc. I found myself pretty busy on studying Japanese and the history of Japan because I am a Japanese major. However, I learn more languages that came from outside of Asia during my spare time. I also find it very helpful to find other resources on the internet when you learn a language besides hiring a teacher to teach you a language. You can also purchase different language learning audio books, so I think that is also a useful material to hone your languages skills.

This is literally how I learn my languages. I start by shadow writing native texts, setting a goal of writing between 250,000 (easy languages) and 1,000,000 words (very difficult languages). I personally prefer novels because of their highly descriptive language, extensive use of dialogue, and intriguing plotlines. It’s very difficult to put down a good novel, and it’s the most rewarding feeling in the world to finish one written for native speakers of your target language.

There is another reason and this one is out of the student's control. This reason is poor in-depth teaching. My experience is with Japanese. Japanese is conceptually very different from Indoeuropean languages. There are many expressions, word choice and some conjugations that don't make sense for the Indoeuropean mind. 99% of the time no teacher or lesson ever explains the intricacies of Japanese expressions or conjugations so you can really understand what you are saying. You are left with just repeating but not making sense of what you are saying semantically speaking. This leads to frustration and later desistance.
