Sometimes I forget how good the Pinkerton Avocado is. (Mostly Guatemalan) 9-18 oz., rounded to pear-shaped fruit with a long neck with medium-leathery green skin. Very small seed. Good to excellent quality. Harvest December-April. Bloom type A early. Heavy production further south with warmer winter temperatures or on hills with better cold air drainage to prevent damage to flowers. Spreading tree. 🥑Avocado Talk🥑

Pinkerton's are great avocados, so smooth and they don't turn brown right away. I had a Pinkerton die last year so I bought another and its doing well but I still need to put it in the ground. I bought some Pinkerton fruit from Wake Farms out near you. They are great and I still have some left. I'm hoping my trees produce some fruit this year. A few of my trees have a good fruit set and they are large enough that most of them should hold, we will see, fingers crossed.

Hi Sam...fingers crossed for sure. Mine are holding on but with a lot of fruit drop so I'm optimistic this year too. The ones I got from Wake farms I'm not too sure are Pinkerton. The seed shape didn't look right and was too big. This I know was part of a bag that were, I enjoyed 2 before this video and they were true characteristics of a Pinkerton fruit. We'll find out for sure sometime in the future, lets not kill these this time. Fingers crossed!

When you wash the roots, do you keep it on a pot and in the shade? For how long before you plant in ground? Do you do this to all your avocado trees? How big of a difference does it make?
@AvocadoTalk
@AvocadoTalk Жыл бұрын
First, I evaluate the potting soil that the avocado came in. In my case, I got this from La Verne nurseries which is now owned by Everde. They seem to use a lot of wood chips and wood products in their potting mix which for me has been problematic. So I tend to try to remove as much of the wood chips and sawdust out of the root ball without damaging the root ball. Then I planted mine right away and shaded right away. The shade really helps the tree get adjusted and once it gets adjusted and going you're going to have a stronger tree at the end. If I decide to keep it in a pot, usually I try to up pot it into a bigger one with the better soil mix. Some growers like Durling and Maddock, there are no issues with their soil mix so no real need to wash.

@@AvocadoTalk I just got a hass from home Depot, Pinkerton( la Verne) from Armstrong and sir prize and sharwil from four winds growers. All of them were potted in wood chips. The home Depot one has some cylindrical fabric holding on the original potting/wood box to the root ball. I washed all of them, using a bucket of water to gently remove it all. Some of that stuff was very hard to remove as it was dense and hard so I just decided to not mess with it too much. I've been watching Gary's matsuoka videos so I did this to my citrus tree and guava using the roll and bang on the ground method, they seem to be fine. I didn't know avocados had fragile roots so the first hass I bought is really stunted from root damage. My trees prices range from 40-50. Do you know how much durling and maddock charges? I rather not do the cleaning method again. I'm still looking for some Guatemalan varieties to add (reed most likely). Have you ever tried using the fish emulsion/seaweed extract/molasses (1oz each in a gal) foliar spray. Gary was saying this would make the plants explode in growth. For a small space gardener, do you think 5x5 sq ft space is enough for an avocado tree? I have some retaining walls that are 30 feet long and only 4-5 feet wide. I can make it wider but then I would have less varieties. Gary states 5 feet wide is best for productively as light only penetrates 2 feet into the foliage. Thanks for your expertise

@@geeyoupee durling trees I've seen sold at the home Depot. Maddock you would have to drive all the way down there and the last time I was there they had trees for $34. They typically have a pretty good selection, Reed's gems and so on. I really like the trees that Maddock grows. My one gem from them is doing well. I'm considering getting a Gwen the next time I head down there. I have a couple of Gwen already but from different growers. Get the reed, you'll like it! I've used to fish but it's a little stinky and I'm looking to add some kelp.

@@AvocadoTalk I just looked at their site and they are 40 now. That's just as cheap as home Depot for 5gal tree. I saw on offer up a place called Hall's plant nursery up in the Temecula mountain area. They sell 20 dollar avocado trees but they are mostly likely grown in wood material. The selection was pretty slim: hass, mexicola grande, furte, bacon, Stewart and little cado. I was thinking of getting the fuerte, bacon, stewart and little cado from them. They are cheap enough were I can place them been in better varieties with 5 feet spacing. If I don't end up liking them, I can cut them down and let the other ones get bigger. Since maddock is a bit closer to SD, better soil and selection, I might just get 1-2 from there and call it a day. Thanks for letting me know about maddock.

Sorry, I'm not sure where you can actually get Pinkerton in the UK. I know it's possible to grow avocados in the UK. I've seen a video where there is an avocado and it's probably 30 ft tall and producing. By the way, most Pinkerton are more elongated but once in a while you get a fruit that could be a little bit more stubby. Thanks for watching!

Hi Pris Rod, I can't be 100% sure it is a Pinkerton but it tasted just like the other 2 that I had which were more pear shaped than this one. Got it from a friend who picked up a bag on the way up, he shared 3 of 6 and they tasted just like each other. Even nurseries make mistakes, La Verne mis labeled Jan Boyce as Kona and I was one of the lucky ones that got a nice accident. Time will tell if I got a Pinkerton in the ground. BTW I hope you are enjoying my scientific peeling technique 😂😂. Thanks for watching!

Hi REM I think Pinkerton is really for SoCal. I’m having poor results up here in NorCal and the folks at Epicenter are not too enthusiastic either. My Pinkerton in near future will be stumped and grafted over to Reed, Lamb, or Hass which all perform excellent for me. However I do have a 1 yr old Pinkerton growing in Vista and looking forward to seeing how it turns out

Where can I find Pinkerton at? Home Depot and Lowes never have them
@AvocadoTalk
@AvocadoTalk 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Wynn, I got my last Pinkerton at Home Depot and I've seen them at Lowe's. Sometimes they will have only a couple and depending on the time of year, could move quickly. I had to go through each and every one in their batch of 40 to find it but it was in there. Also I've seen them at local nurseries and expect more to be available July per La Verne's availability list. Another option is working with the garden center at HD to coordinate a few varieties that you want, La Verne will do special orders. Good Luck and glad you are looking to grow one too, time will tell for me. Thanks for watching!

@@wynn_explorations2543 O Yeah more avocados...I would recommend adding a couple more "A" Type since I think you are good with "B's" so here are some options: 1. GEM - smaller tree and very productive 2. Lamb Hass - extend your fruit harvest after Hass 3. Carmen Hass - fruit potential multiple times a year. Some have gotten 3-4 times a year depending on where you are at. Also if you are interested in some unique and harder to find: Kona Sharwil and Jan Boyce are excellent tasting. Good Luck!
