WHY YOU’LL NEVER BE ABLE TO FLEX LIKE AN INFLUENCER… the truth exposed.
For your chance to win the trip to Santorini and support a great cause, enter at bit.ly/You-Win-...
This is another video in my SOCIAL MEDIA VS REAL LIFE video series, this time taking a look at the damaging effect social media influencers flexing on their followers can have. Now I want to make it clear that i’m not against designer items or people who covet them, what I am against is people going into serious debt to purchase these items because they think they ‘need’ them or because they feel like they’re failing at life if they don't have them. So many of the luxury influencers get their designer products either completely free, or heavily discounted, and there are also influencers that are hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt trying to maintain the illusion of a luxurious lifestyle. Don’t let social media fool you, and don't ever compare yourself negatively to what you see online. Love you. x

Sarah Junkins it’s their money, so they can use it however they want, they owe no one nothing but there is a suspicion that our donated money isn’t used for the cause of helping those in need... billions are donated each year and yet there’s no change? Why? What happens to that money? Where does it go? Something to think about

Depressed Af You do realize that an administrative team is needed for any charity. Accounts, Marketing (think about how you know of or became aware of the charity you most support). Oh God.. certain designer bags price tag could pay for my universities tuition fees and allowance the whole three semester... and yes, our public uni in my country is quite cheap for the locals because of the subsidy.. point is, with designer bags price tag, as a student, I could live a life of luxury...

I read a quote the other day saying something like "The problem with social media is that it makes people feel bad who have not become a millionaire by the age of 23" and I felt that. Sometimes I feel like I have not accomplished anything in my life and it takes me a while to understand that all that influencers do is lip-sync a little while I actually do have a bachelor's degree.

Yeah in 5-10 years their looks, audience and appeal will diminish but you’ll still have your bachelors degree
@vicksinaja
@vicksinaja 3 жыл бұрын
Well I would say that's debatable. Is having a bachelor's degree an accomplishment, of course but so is being an influencer. Not all influencers do lip-sync, some entertain and that's a real career. That's one of the beautiful thing now days, people who don't have proper education can still be successful. But I hope you go on to do great things, and without knowing you probably have way more accomplishments :)))
@chewbacca1238
@chewbacca1238 3 жыл бұрын
@@vicksinaja You're right. The way I worded it is indeed a little bitter. There still are influencers who don't really do a lot and have huge following. But there are also people, like Stephanie for example, who influence but in a very good way and actually have achieved great things. I totally think they deserve the success (as long as they don't sell questionable products or the like). I still think my degree is worth more than a lip-syncing fanbase that might leave me tomorrow, but I wouldn't say I have more than big influencers just because I might have had better education. However, it's not okay that social media makes us feel worthless because we're not millionaires at the age of 23. That shouldn't happen.

Not all influencers are like that some have designers and nice houses. I like Lydia and Amelia liana mostly for theft personality and cute interiors. I get inspiration from their classy style. When influencers say : this was so kindly gifted, or that was sent over, i get sick to my stomach. It really affects my mood to watch al their new in pieces but yet i keep watching and envying them. I kind of despise the way they brag and make it sound as if they are humble and environmentally conscious. I don’t have social media because it used to affect me soo much that I ended up having a low self esteem and my husband recommended me to delete those apps. I took up learning a language and always had my books next to me so that whenever i had free time I’d learn a few more pages. Some people don’t easily get affected, but for me turning away from it was the best decision i made. And helped me gain a new skill which boosted my confidence instead of making me feel lesser.

"Every self respecting woman should have that..." Yes, the thing that bothers me the most is the fact that contentment, self respect, peace in life is equaled to material possessions and traveling. I don't agree with "escape culture" either. Constant travelling, events, like u can't absolutely be happy if you haven't gone to Positano or Santorini in summer and Switzerland in winter, and also a few "quick" trips in between. It true that people sometimes think that you don't respect yourself if you don't own expensive things, or if your boyfriend/husband doesn't get you expensive things. You are somehow less than if you don't even aspire to be rich and have those things, not just not own them at the moment. And also as you mentioned, the fact that kids and teens fall into this trap is so dangerous for their character development and future relationships.

They don’t realise the negative effect the culture they’re pushing has on the world... or rather don’t care because it’s currently beneficial to them. They have no talents aside from sharing the talents of others. They’ve now started preaching sustainability because they’ve been pressured to by their audience yet every video is new items, new purchases, new sponsorships and of course you NEED it all. Buying designer items, if done properly, prevents consumerism. Typically workers, depending on the brand of course, are much more well paid. One designer bag, pair of shoes, jeans, and jacket could last years. If you look up the royal family from the UK you’ll see a lot of the items the men and the Queen have they’ve had for years and have reworn time and time again. This actually goes against consumerism. HOWEVER, it’s when you buy designer like it’s fast fashion that it contributes to consumerism, for example: and I love her fashion but Kate Middleton does this a lot. If you purchase quality items mindfully you won’t have to repurchase similar items again for years (it’s basically a tenet of minimalism actually, buy less but of great quality so that it lasts a long time).

Funny enough, most of these influencers that behave like this are completely ignoring the fact that these items are handcrafted to last a LONG time not just the 'season' and now they have literally cheapened luxury goods because they have made it the new 'fast fashion' which is not only awful as a culture but for the earth!

Unless it's an Hermes Birkin or certain Chanel bags, it's actually a really bad strategy to treat bags as 'investment.' They may 'hold their value' over time but with inflation much of the time you take a small loss, and for trendier bags or less prestigious brands, they tend to lose value over time. When I buy a more expensive item (which to me is brands like Realisation Par or Reformation where dresses are typically $140-$250), i don't expect to make that money back or to even turn a profit. If I sell something, I typically get back about half to two-thirds of the price. I think of it as 'subsidizing' the cost a little bit but it's not an investment strategy. I don't buy nicer things to sell them down the line, I just know I have the option because it's likely to be somewhat in demand.

My niece and I had this talk just yesterday (family bbq). Her 21st Birthday is coming up. She has a list of what she wants for her Birthday; 3 specific luxury bag; a Gucci sneakers, a Christian Louboutin heels, a Cartier Love bracelet (no diamond), a Gucci belt and the new iPhone that's not even out yet 🙄. Yap! She is assigning us "gifts". Her justification is that is a 2 in 1 gift for her birthday and Christmas (her Birthday is the day after Christmas). According to my niece, she needs to start posting more on Instagram and items needs to be "gram worthy". I don't have an Instagram so I am not sure what that feels 😂. I said hard pass from Auntie. I spent an hour telling her why.

Make-Up Addiction, please tell me her parents aren’t enabling this nonsense. She’s 21 years old and her head is screwed on wrong. She’s not prepared for real life or even well adjusted. They’ll be doing her a favour in the long run if they employ tough love now. She needs to learn financial responsibility and re-evaluate her priorities and values. Coming up to family members with a whole list of expensive items is disgusting behaviour.

I remember being in secondary school and desperately wanting a Paul’s Boutique bag for school. It was like £80 and of course my parents refused to spend that kind of money on a school bag. I’m glad they did because I only wanted it because it was a trend and it’s not even a nice bag! I would feel so bad rn if I looked at pics of it and knew my parents spent that money

When I was like 15 until I think 20 I used to love watching all the designer stuff, as I've grown older I realized you really don't need any of those things. And with this pandemic I feel like people might have realized that having a designer handbag, glasses or clothes is totally useless.

I'm so glad I spent my teens in the 90s when the people we could idolise were the friends cast or cindy Crawford (I loved her style) but being extra rich or fabulous was what you expected from dynasty and shows like that, but never something you could relate to and the pressure was so much less. I do worry about the younger generation that's been totally influenced by the kartrashians and that ilk, its not real life!! Its who you are as a person that matters, not what you have!!!

I really appreciate you covering this subject ♥ I don't feel the need to buy designer stuff, my aesthetic is very different from the norm. I love vintage, if I were to ever try and "flex" it would be with an item that - I love, I actually use, its survived this long and is super rare plus vintage is also a great investment if you know your stuff. I have actually found vintage designer items out in the wild which I purchased, to hold onto for a while, research and then sell. 60s Dior handbag, 60/70s Celine skirt, Christine La croix jacket. Buy and wear what you love not because someone said you should have it.

once we were back in paris waiting in the line to go into the LV store with my mum and sisters. the daintiness of the whole store really intrigued me. everyone there was much older and it was beautiful hearing the staff talk about the origins, designs, features and inspiration behind the bags. i think that it should NOT be an elitist or a-lister thing to have these bags but I feel bad for all the kids who miss out on these magical stories and quite literally: history. however, we shouldn't place such a high value and worth on materials at the end of the day. the only thing everyone should be able to do is appreciate something from whatever distance or proximity to it.

Thank you so much for saying this out loud. I'm a 21 yo who just graduated from university last year and these social media influencers have been making me doubt my worth and not being able to see my degree certificate as valuable anymore. I and most of my fresh graduate friends have been struggling to climb the ladder from the bottom, dealing with terrible salary and mean boss, that sometimes when we compare ourselves to these influencers it makes all the blood, sweat, and tears seem like they'll not be worth anything. Thank you for encouraging us that we are more than just being able to flex.

Can I just say, PREACH. I recently started a tiny channel because I love fashion, but even before that - I would consume endless hours of fashion related content on youtube, and the normalization of luxury subliminally seeped through the cracks of my common sense. I started coveting items I never thought of, let alone wanted, before. Items I could not afford in a million years, and honestly - if I could - why would I? The smartest thing those companies ever did was identifying the potential of collaborating with social media 'influencers'. I don't judge them either, btw, don't get me wrong. If such an opportunity presented itself to me I would jump on it. But there need to be more people like you, who shed light on the behind the scenes of it all, and remind us how ridiculous all of this really is ❤ Anyway off I go to binge on the rest of your channel now that I found it lol

I hope many young girls or anyone really sees this video and understand that their value is so much more than designer items. I know people who buy these items to make pictures and return them afterwards. That is not authentic and just sad. Honestly sad! I feel really bad that they feel that is needed to be respected. You are worth so much more than a designer item will ever be. If it really makes you happy and you can afford it, go ahead! But don’t let social media tell you that you have to. I’m 26 and I don’t own a single designer item. Trust me, I’m just as happy! (Some can argue that maybe you’re even happier without it. But I’ll leave that up to you.) 💕🌸

This video was so needed. I love it! You look amazing, as well. I've always been a leader and not a follower. I've never cared about designer products or what other people had... I just bought what I liked. A label means nothing to me. If something costs $5 or $500, all that matters is that it's useful and it makes you happy. I hate when people buy pointless items, just because it's the latest thing or because it's "trending". They're all a bunch of sheep. I adored your rant and more people need to do this. People need to break free of the stereotype of success and be happy with simplicity. It'll bring them way more joy and a lot less stress. Thank you for this. 💖🙌🏼

Someone commented saying her moms designer items come with a wonderful story and THAT makes the items actually valuable. My now husband bought me a beautiful YSL bag (my first designer bag) the day before we eloped and a week after my 25th birthday. It holds huge sentimental value and a beautiful story! It’s not just a bag anymore- it symbolizes a happy memory that I will cherish forever. A video of Kris Jenner showing off her handbags was so genuine and beautiful BECAUSE her bags all came with great stories of love, friendship, etc.

The first time I heard of a Birking bag was in Gilmore Girls when Logan gifted Rory one and Emily freaked out. Shortly after Jeffrey Star released that video of his like tens of Birkins. I'm not gonna tell people how to spend their money but that is reckless and irresponsible in my opinion.

@@eatmyoctopus so giving a 2 year old a Birkin bag just because they can afford it is fine? (offset and cardi). buying that much leather goods when thousands of animals are being slaughtered for it is good? if they bought it and kept it to themselves then yea sure maybe but they brag and boast about it at every opportunity. the amount that these bags total up to IS ridiculous. these influencers don't even wear them regularly. i get collectors but at least they look at them from time to time and document them. the others make one haul video or tour and then it collects dust...

the problem here is the flex culture. as someone who currently study fashion design if somebody buy my design, i want it to be special for them, and feel the love, labour, and craftmanship in each of the pieces we make. it's just sad that people buy them to flex and make other people feel less about themselves. imagine how the craftmans feel about that if people were interested more in how things are made and the design principle instead of self validation to own something, it would be a very different story. fashion should not be about flexing (unless it's self made. flex it!!!!)

My main problem is the age group of their followers. These aren’t early 20’s, they’re tweens & high schoolers. My granddaughter is 14 and so far my daughter has done a really good job of keeping her down to earth and making her earn the money. I used to indulge both of my grandchildren but not designer clothes etc. I now get them stuff from 4Ocean or things that will last. I learned my lesson back in the day when I saved and bought myself a pair of Vanderbuilt Jeans (yep, I’m that old) and the butt ripped out after about a month. I’ve been a Levi’s girl ever since. I do enjoy nice clothes but buy clothes that I can mix & match and will add a ‘fad’ piece here & there but I still wear clothes I bought over 30 years ago that I update easily with the ‘fad’ pieces.

Beth, oh I relate!!!! I, too, thought I “had” to have those Gloria jeans and literally they were SO poorly made! I don’t mind paying for quality but paying for a name or status was something those of us who came of age in the 80s learned could be very disappointing. I am now more into comfort, lol, and my Shopko stretch jeans that I got for $20 on sale have lasted longer and over much more um..”body real estate” than those Vanderbilt jeans ever did 😂
