Men have pressure too, but it seems like when a guy is attractive, it's considered secondary or a bonus to his other qualities. But, for women it's unfortunately the main focus and everything else is secondary. It's dehumanizing

That is 100% true. I feel as if women are much more open and tolerant to dating a man she isn’t 100% attracted to. It’s not settling in my eyes, because to me it matters more about what’s inside. And once you learn more about someone and fall in love with them, they become more attractive. I remember seeing a study/social experiment of women and men basically being catfished and met up, the women at least stuck around for a while and humored the men. The men just threw them out of their cars and told them they don’t look like they do in their pictures. Which I understand, but you don’t have to be a rude asshole about it. Society pushes the standard of beauty before anything else and it’s just wrong. It’s a smart marketing move though

@@syc6598 that’s because men don’t get judged for looks by women as much as women get judged by men. Lets say an overweight guy posts a video of himself being confident on tiktok, most girls will be pretty supportive of him, if anything it will be other guys critiquing him in the comments. Where as if an overweight woman would do the same thing, men will be quick to “humble” her in some way or another

The criticism is one sided. Guys who rely on their sense of humor or intelligence to be sexy. Some of whom shower regularly, who don’t shave their face mentioning how they’re just not attracted to women who don’t remove their body hair. People believe it’s natural. It’s not. It’s something women are supposed to do and hide we do it. The no makeup makeup. It’s BS! Am glad people can at least talk and think about it. ‘Cuz if you stop doing it there is pushback.

Elementary teacher here -- A few weeks ago, a nine year old girl told me she was ugly. She's a normal girl, no physical disabilities -- but she has TikTok & Instagram and bases her own appearance on what she sees on the apps. I wish there was a child-friendly version of this video to show her, explaining the extremes/unrealisticness of beauty standards. Would you be willing to do this? This is a topic you are clearly passionate about. After all, young girls are getting horrible messages of beauty in social media!
@katherinebaker80882 жыл бұрын
Disabilities don't necessarily affect beauty, but kids are cruel and any difference is marked as ugly and wrong. I do feel bad for her as a normal girl though, when I was in elementary school I started worrying about my appearance as well. Kids don't need to look a certain way, and absolutely shouldn't worry about being attractive.

I don’t feel the comment was meant to take beauty away from anyone. What is happening is even the “conventionally pretty” people are experiencing the same shame in the mirror that unconventionally pretty people have in the past. Overall this is creating a sort of self shame/hate pandemic if you will. It’s time to start fighting the average beauty standards. I was taught to find one thing about myself that I loved and focus on that rather than focus on the features that made me feel insecure, and to focus even more on the things that I was good at and not how I didn’t “look” like others. Kids are not getting that from social media today.

Something I think should be said: dolls and stuff might influence how girls see themselves. But I think far more often it's their mothers/female role models that influence how they see themselves and judge themselves. A mother that is always down on herself about her body will raise daughters who reflect that attitude. Heaven forbid that mother turn her body shame onto her daughter. But her language about herself will plant seeds in her daufhters. From toddlerhood on.

Taking care of one's physical appearance in a healthy and objective way is perfectly natural. I find it disheartening, however, that society is obsessed with physical appearance in an unhealthy way and has placed it on a pedestal above all other things. Physical appearance is the first thing that we notice about a person but it only represents a small fraction of who that person is. The true beauty (or lack thereof) of a person is hidden, it can't be immediately seen. It is only uncovered and revealed by spending time with a person. It is a person's soul, a person's essence, their humanity - their values and morals, humour, intellect, wisdom, kindness, compassion, humility, grace, interests, strengths, weaknesses, resilience, life experiences and much more. It is that which is not immediately seen and hidden in which the greatest portion of a person's beauty resides.

I was thinking the exact same thing, I can count the men and boys that I have met that say they like the full face makeup look on less than one hand while the ones complaining or being sad about how much makeup women and girls have and love a more or fully natural look are too many to even remember. When I wear makeup women compliment my skill and men say nothing, when I don't or at least leave the skin bare men compliment but women don't say anything, so in my experience the "powerful men made this trend" is totally off the mark, it's more like a rare few men saw an opportunity of a possible market and took it, I think that a woman would have done the same and they often do work with these trends. I've always had many male friends and been considered "one of the guys" so I've heard a lot of locker room talk and let me tell you, if men got to decide these trends we'd all be super focused on our waist to hip ratio and trying to achieve a good healthy body shape regardless of numbers like weight, measurements or clothing sizes while mostly ignoring makeup. Soft skin and soft hair would also be a priority, trendy style or colour not so much.

I don’t think we’d laugh as so many would have been hurt by these beauty standards and it’s not a laughing matter however I get your point. I hope that you’re right but I’m not too optimistic because men have dictated the way women should look, behave and literally exist since the dawn of time so I don’t know. If there isn’t a massive change in our society’s relationship with power and gender equality I don’t think this will change on a bigger scale. I’m all natural and I claim it, I know people like me, they look at me a lot, so I guess they enjoy the natural look but I live in Europe and even tho we have cosmetic surgery and others, I feel like everything in the US in exaggerated and bigger so it’s not as “bad” here. Where I live, people prefer being natural, eat healthy and exercise from time to time.

I think that if we were all to look the same, and everyone fit the golden ratio, then none of us would be beautiful anymore. Reminds me of this advertisement for a makeup line that showed before and after pictures of their models, one of the models had these dark spots by the corners of her eyes that they then completely and proudly covered up with foundation like "see? look how flawless she looks now" when the spots by her eyes were actually cute and made her look unique. No need to cover them up.

Realistically, dolls aren’t the problem. They’re just dolls. It’s things like commercials and giant corporations that try to convince you that there’s something wrong with you, so they can sell you a product. That’s the main problem. Another problem is conditioning since you were young, like the way people talk to you about your face & body as a child. Most mothers introduce their daughters into eating disorders, calorie counting, and just general beauty standards. I had bratz dolls as a kid and they didn’t effect my self esteem. How about just plain aging. A woman is a corpse after 30 these days. As consumers we choose the standards. If we didn’t react to the marketing and purchase the product it would change. Modelling etc is going back to more realistic models because women are demanding it. Your point about insta models all being the same is your answer. We are complicit in setting a certain standard and expectation of beauty as well it’s not all corporate. Corporate responds to what is popular and what sells. Start the change by following more natural influencers, women as individuals have absolute power over popularity, use it.

The whole concept of beauty is just silly. "When people see some things as beautiful, other things become ugly." It's from Tao Te Ching, the wisest book ever. Do you see? The judgement is only in someone's head. And sadly, but a society will ALWAYS be judgemental. We, humans, are designed that way, because if we don't judge, we'll die. Survival of the fittest. We can't change it, we just need to accept a judgemental society and perceive the whole situation with humor. Because it doesn't really matter if the society considers our bodies are ugly or not good enough or not perfect. It's about happiness. And happiness is not about society or looks, it's about You.

I see it all the time in the fitness world because having people as young as 11 years old ask me how they can get the perfect body just shows how much society has changed what the standard of beauty is. And when people can’t meet those standards, it causes them to feel so bad about their bodies even though they may be already healthy or may have had great success with getting healthy. So I am right there with you on how this can impact everyone in a negative way. I’m struggling with it myself because I feel like I can’t measure up to some of the bodies I see on fitness channels and Instagram even though I’m a healthy weight and am strong. But I feel like I am swimming up stream as she is bombarded daily by society’s flawed standards even at a young age. I really appreciate this video. I hope your message is heard loud and clear especially by the younger ones.

What you have to say is so important! I used to cry when I saw myself in a mirror and on some days, I'm almost back to that. Your channel made me realize what unrealistic standards I try to live up to. I also love how you don't try to "force" your viewers to feel good about themselves constantly but normalize the bad days. If I ever have a daughter and KZbin still exists, she's going to have to watch your videos.

Well said!! More women need to realise we are all beautiful!! Its a sad society these days that we as women put ourselves down constantly because of all the "beautiful" women on TV and in magazines that we think we can never measure up to. We need to teach our daughters from an early age that they too are beautiful no matter what anyone says..... even barbie!! Please keep these videos coming. Love them xxx

First of all, Bella's Hadid face isn't even natural. Her face is a massive plastic surgery and now she is a super model because of "how beautiful is she". Maybe she is, but it is a little bit cheating, isn't it? #celebrity

I think even the supermodels in the 90’s has surgery too but we didn’t have social media to compare. Now that more regular people are getting surgery, we are more able to spot it on celebrities. I know Giselle has a nose job and Adrianna Lima has breast implants. Naomi Campbell had a nose job too.

The truth is that nothing is enough, I mean, when is about beauty, its not exactly about being pretty but is majority about being THE PRETTIEST and then comparing yourself with other women/girls. Being pretty is not enough cause somehow we always want to be more or have more of something or either don't have or minimalize a certain kind of thing that we have in our bodys, its always a competition where none of us will actually win, and we got so obssesed wanting to change ourselves with features that are bassicaly imposible to have that we just forget about how beautiful we already are.

the men who own these companies and make these standards make it precisely the way you describe because they want us to constantly be chasing superficial beauty and approval instead of pursuing our careers and hobbies. the more focus we put on beautification and men’s approval the less time we have to advance in our careers and nourish our non romantic relationships.

Now I have a family of my own and a man that gives me compliments and tells me how beautiful I am all the time.. but most importantly I'm starting to realize I'm me! I'm gorgeous in my own way and I dont have to be someone I'm not to be happy. It took almost 15 years to get to this point in my life but I'm now embracing myself and let me tell you it's amazing. To not give 1 single shit about what others say is so empowering. I wish I had watched something like this when I was younger. I thought it was normal to hate your body/appearance most of my life until the last few years when I realized it’s basically all programming from the media and perpetuated through generations. My family is so appearance/weight focused and always has been, and my eyes have just been opened to programming that was just passed down from one generation to the next. That blows my mind.

Having Body hair in general is absolutaly normal. At the same time, it is better to CUT your body hair regularly (in wet and sweaty areas) to prevent lice and reduce sweat odor (hair in wet areas increases the area for bacteria to grow, more bacteria=more sweat odor). But of course it doesn't mean you need to SHAVE body hair, especialy on legs

Yes I can't wait for the time where no one gives a cr$p about body hair. I actually done a little social experiment where I walked in public with leg hair. To my surprise there was only one group who pointed at me and laugh, I don't think the other people even noticed or cared! Next is to go out to a bigger place. 😅

@@daryadzhimula body hair = unhygienic is a myth. Armpit hair doesn’t create more body odour it actually does the opposite. If you don’t want to trim body hair great, if you do then great. I just think we should stop pretending that the hair that naturally grows out of your body is bad, especially on women. Women are not children.
