The guy hitting his employee would be fired immediately and sued in court in my country. Absolutely unacceptable! I guess I would not fit in Korean society, if this is the price. Very disturbing.

Well it was the norm around the world for many centuries. It's just some of us woke up & recognized that it is probably not helping us (humans) get to have a better place in the world, thus getting more awareness & some law reforms to make it unethical & illegal. It was ok for husbands to slap their wives around for thousands of years until women woke up, like in the United States, beginning in the 20th century. I believe Japan has some similar physical reprimanding as what happened here.

This happens in many Asian societies but more pronounced in South Korea. The culture here is heirachial where people are divided according to rank, position and social status. You are automatically expected to respect your seniors, elders and people of authority even when you are in the right. Koreans are expected to just accept the physical, mental and sexual abuse without retaliation. Until today this totally toxic environment is still pervasive starting from school bullying to workplace abuse.
@deettekearns90922 жыл бұрын
Very disturbing is right. The bully in the video would be prosecuted in the states (where I live) in addition to being publicly shamed. If this video went viral, news agencies would report his name, company, etc. Just because someone is older or has more power, is not an excuse for physically or mentally berating someone. No one is perfect. If the guy made a mistake, or mistakes, hurting someone is not the answer to fixing the problem. What a mess.

This explains a lot, why S Korea has such a bullying and mental health problem--it's like the entire nation is holding it in and doesn't know it, and can't manage it so it explodes and leaks out the worst possible way. People are entitled to their feelings, but are responsible for their actions. It took me a lot of counseling to learn to manage my anger and stress, and it's a crying shame this country doesn't legitimize the need for it.

WOW. This explains a lot as to why Kdrama relationships are SOoooooo Dysfunctional!! When I 1st started watching Kdrama I'd be yelling at the TV and asking, 'why are they chasing this person that treats them so badly?!!' Or, why is he allowing himself to be abused like this and not speaking up?!! So many humiliating scenarios portrayed that would be seen in quite a different light in another culture, perhaps. Anyway - wow. I've seen some small changes being reflected in Kdrama. Like "Itaewon Class," "Why Her?" (really good w/strong FL), "Shooting Star" even had a more balanced romantic relationship and honest communication. Very eye opening for sure!

YA! (Hey). Thanks so much for the J-Hope song synopsis!!! It’s a bit of shock-and-awe! But done so well! I like when he actually trips the bossman whose face then lands on the copy machine, then you see him standing on the table and he and all the office workers are celebrating before panning into the garage for “I want More”. Guess he made it pretty clear what he wants more of…,music, army, creativity… and not the office big business regime part of the music industry. I imagine the whole album will carry a wide array of styles not just grunge rock and Hobi anger. This is a bit like that “Korean anger explosion” you just mentioned, after perhaps many metaphorical slaps in the face as a band, and he feels the freedom now to express it. Looking forward to the whole album, and thanks for great commentary!

I am a huge BTS fan and I was just listening to N.O again today but this time I really focused on the English Lyrics. The song made me think of this video. I love that even at a young age and early into their career BTS rebelled against Societal Norms. It is a human right and need to be successful and achieve your dreams, but from what I read and watched South Korean students are forced to study practically all day, are pitted against one another and must achieve to become number one or considered failures. The society pressure is so alarming that the suicide rate is too high. This need to be number one can make you be very competitive and if not monitored or corrected it can cause you to become a bully and trample on others as you try to climb your way to a lonely mountain whether it be school, work or just in general. This behavior continues into adulthood and can make you look at your peers as week subordinates. This video also reminds me of the BTS song Baepsae. In the song N.O I am going to copy and paste a few of the translated lyrics from N.O. A good house, a good car, can such things be happiness? dream is gone without even a chance to breathe School, home, or PC room are all treadmills Living the same lives, forcing you to be number one The receiving student is a double agent between dreams and reality Who made us study machines? If it is not first place, it is classified as a failure Who do you think made even close friends step on and stand on? What?

In Finland that person hitting would have had to go, he would have been kicked out of his work, no matter how high his position was. I am honestly chocked. And if I knew my boyfriend/husband/friend/anyone would be treated like that at work, but could not get help, I would begg them to try to find another job. I am honestly so sorry Korean society allowes this kind of behavior towards other people.. 😟

You must be excellent at interpersonal communication. Around 12 minutes, I had a moment of recognition! I used to be a chemist. I only had a B.S., so I had a routine job where all my coworkers were from around the world, with no white Americans at this level. The company knew there were unhappy workers. We had many Asian workers and managers, too (not Korean though) A meeting was arranged with us little workers and the one approachable (White American) VP. Giant meeting room, promise of no reprisal. No one said a word! I asked one of the unhappy workers why she didn’t say anything. These 30 years later, I still believed her answer “in her culture, it’s impolite to complain”

My first time here, I stumbled across your video, I love how you explain things, it's almost like you went to university here in the U.S and majored in psych. Which I did lol. You are spot on, people need to express themselves but with respect.. it's time all people learn how to handle their anger and other emotions. To speak up, but the right way. If someone slaps you for how you feel, the real answer isn't slap them back, however, it should be viewed as a wake up call that the slapping person crossed a line. Me personally? I am slapping back unless the person is very elderly. Then I walk away after telling them that their age does not entitle them to violence.

That’s not just a slap. That was punishment from a superior at work. That was assault, even though it was open handed,not like a little admonishment. I grew up acting deferential. The slaps came from my parents. My sisters , however would keep arguing even if they landed on the floor. So, I grew up thinking of holding it in as a personal choice - not a cultural norm. I did have a first generation Korean American friend in high school. She shared with me the struggles of her life. She never talked about domestic violence, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it was done in her home. I really cared for her. I wish I still knew her.

Three things: 1) I am so happy to have found your channel 2) I love that you covered the topic of Koreans holding things in and boiling over disproportionately to the incident. I am Chinese-American and my dad (in his 60's) is like that. He's from China. His rage episodes over something so insignificant occurs about once a month. I feel like this is very common across East Asia, where this holding things in/not knowing how to communicate/not having a proper outlet to express at the moment it's appropriate to do so manifests in unhealthy compulsions, such as binge drinking or gambling. 3) Eckhart Tolle calls this behavior the "pain body." Here's an excerpt from the website Life Advancer: "According to Eckhart Tolle, pain body is literally our body of pain. A cumulative entity of all of our previous psychological and emotional trauma, from our infancy to our present. The pain body does not know spatial or temporal limitations. It simply follows us since the moment we are born and awaits its opportunity to strike from the shadows of our subconscious. As an example, think of an instance like this one. You had an extremely tiresome day at work, and everything seems to be going wrong. You come home, and maybe someone is waiting for you. A friend, or a lover perhaps. They immediately start asking what’s wrong, and it just pushes and pushes you. Something dark mounts in the pit of your stomach, and you feel appalled at yourself and your life. Everything is so wrong. Nobody wants this person asking questions, reminding you of your failures and weaknesses. If only you were alone. You just want to disappear. And suddenly, the thing in your stomach has hijacked your brain. Your limbs are not your own. Nor is your voice, or your mouth, or the words coming out of it. You begin to spew ugly things, painful things. It’s you speaking, but it’s something else being heard. Eckhart Tolle says this is what the pain body does. Your body of pain, lurking in the corners of your mind, is a mass of all our fears, insecurities, and negative thoughts that we lock away. It’s the negative voices that have told us bad things about ourselves, which we ended up internalizing and mimicking when cornered."

Slapping them back would be great to see! I know it won't likely happen, but if it did, I would cheer that person openly. Repressing their feelings is only causing them to abuse the ones they love and raise their blood pressure. I know my experience was different because I was obviously a foreigner in South Korea. However, I will say in those few instances where it appeared someone was about to try and cross a line I just gave them this "look". The "look" is just enough to remind them I'm genuinely a nice person but if you mess with me there is that unpredictable side they haven't seen yet that will end them. I call it a hint of crazy, lol! As for the members of BTS, I hope they just do whatever genres appeal to them for a change. If they each want to stick with one genre for the initial individual debuts, then I'm okay with that. If they want to tackle several genres in their individual debuts that's cool too. No artist ever releases an album where every single song appeals to me and I think that should be expected. Artists have to be free to experiment to find themselves and that will change as their life and experiences change.

I am a Christian and I believe in turning the other cheek, but it made me really mad how hard the boss slapped his employee and made him get down on his knees. I would love to visit SK someday, but I don't think I would fit in. It is seriously abuse of power. It's like he was making the younger guy an example of what would happen if you talked back or get out of line. Spoiler Alert This reminds me of the movie Itaewon Class and in one scene there was a teenager who had a powerful, rich dad and basically bullied another poor teenager. The sad thing is the teacher acted like he didn't see anything for the fear of retaliation from the powerful, rich parent. The bullying was so normalized that the other teenagers didn't even get involved and the only one who confronted the bully was the new kid Park Sae-ro-yi who is played by Park Seo-Joon. The bully then started harassing Park Sae-ro-yi until he punched him. The Principal of the school called the bully and Park Sae-ro-yi into his office. To make it worst he also called Park Sae-ro-yi's dad and the bully's rich, powerful dad and it turned out that rich, powerful dad was the boss of Park Sae-ro-yi's dad so he demanded that Park Sae-ro-yi should get on his knees and beg his son for forgiveness and if he didn't his dad would be fired and he would be kicked out of the school. I have watched Vlogs of English Teachers in SK talking about these rich spoiled kids who bully other kids and even the teachers, but because their parents are basically rich and powerful they get away with it. Do you think people like this are groomed from a young age to feel superior and given a pass to bully those less unfortunate then them? I also saw the movie Hwarang and for some reason it makes me think of the Korean Bone-rank system. I guess the way the boss treated the employee like a subordinate made me think of higher class verses lower class. Sorry, long response!

So it’s true then in Kdrama, you got horrible bosses to slap you. Here in the West, We have bosses whose very mean to our team members including me. I told her that her behaviour is not acceptable. We are supermarket market employees, we are supposed to have very good people skills but the line manager herself has zero people skills. She’s bullying her team members. When I spoke to the store manager, the manager said it just the manager style. There’s no resolution to that but she will speak to her discreetly. I got so mad because the store manager let her get away with it. Instead, she said don’t talk about it with others try to get on their side, I could jeopardise the company. I said to her, are we running a tyrant or running a supermarket? Very prostrating situation.

Bruhhhh! That slap! Ok now i understand what you meant in your later video with the massage chair. So then there aren't any work place training videos about workplace violence, and other series like disability rights at work etc??

I have worked with some korean country managers and I can see how they intimidate their staff almost somewhat similar to what bosses in china and japan do although I must say that the degree of intimidation is higher there esp if the boss is a old school man. Love your tip on the BB cream. TY !

I can not believe a boss or co-worker striking an employee. That would be a criminal offense. Or in some places the person that was struck would come back and it would be a mass murder at that company. I know the people in Korea have heard of that. At these places of employment is their an HR Division where you can handle grievance or any employee dispute? If that is how people are being treated I wouldn't want to visit Korea. Their are places in the U.S. I wouldn't visit either because of certain things. J-Hope was a good move and perfect choice to lead in solo activity. I definitely believe Lollapalooza is going to be a big hit for him. I don't think they should stay in one genre but be diverse. I enjoy your commentaries.

This is EXTREMELY foreign to Western countries. If anyone slaps someone else everyone will stare and gasp. 😮 It's big trouble you get yourself into. At school you can get expelled. Absolutely not acceptable to slap anyone! Done at work, you'll be fired. It's a HUGE frowned upon action.

Their is no excuse for hitting another person!! I would so slap them back!! No way would I accept that kind of abuse!

That assault video, I do hope that man was sacked and blacklisted. I watch a lot of Korean Movies and Dramas, and they're full of the "Pecking Order" mentality.....abuse South Korea do not accept diversity...free speech....free forward individual thinking I actually have to stop most dramas as I find it weighs to much on my psych. I do hope the younger generation make drastic changes 🤞🏻🙏🏻

What this is called in psychological terminology is displaced anger. After seeing the clip, my reaction is that I'm not planning to visit Korea anytime soon.

J-hope's new single More is VERY 90s. My 90s music collection is approving of the old hiphop/alternative rock beat. Yes, ARMY is going to make him successful because more ARMYs are OT7. But we still have *hope* that they will come back together. Here's the thing, Jhope in the 2022 Festa said that they needed to "rip apart" to come back together. This is so poetic because what he meant was that they were one unit like a paper. But over the years the "paper" started to tear. So his analogy meant that they need to "rip apart" so that they can have purpose when they come back together.

Abusive behavior is not socially acceptable behavior in the workplace in the US. In fact, it’s a crime. However, a lot of abuse continues to occur behind closed doors. And of course, guns everywhere, including military grade automatic weapons in the hands of every Tom, Dick and Harry…

Well, hitting and slapping is not acceptable in the USA. I don't know how I would respond in the moment, but I would never go back to an employer that would physically assault me. Your life is worth more than your job. I'd probably ghost the employer. I'm Gen X, not Z, but ghosting has been around a lot longer than there has been a word for it. When my generation entered the workforce, we typically don't express how we really feel about a job. We just quit suddenly without warning. Some trucking companies for example, had to start putting trackers in their trucks in the 90s because they would hire an Xer, and if that person just got fed up with the job, they would just park the truck somewhere in the middle of nowhere and just hitch a ride home, without formally resigning.

I definitely could not be a Korean under those circumstances! As an American here in USA if anyone hits or slaps you, you have the right to sue the hell out of them! One never hits back if they are planning on suing them as it nullifies everything. In this day and age, I don’t care what country one is from , the bully knows that they are being mean and hateful and should under no circumstance get away with it. The Joseon period ended years ago and anyone still living under that delusion is not playing with a full deck and should not be in leadership roles in any company in any country! If the country does not give legal recourse then one should slap them back and then declare they quit the job! Life is way too short to put up with lunatics like that! You destroy your own life by putting up with it! Now on to J-Hope! I love the kid to death and think he is extremely talented, handsome and smart! Fans will go along with that type song because as you explained it is part of something bigger that he is attending in Chicago! If you remember when they first got started they went with, I will call it the dark side although maybe a little mellow dramatic, but my point is this, it never took off and they had to change their whole persona to a softer sweeter side which is who they are now and it definitely took off as fans wanted a kinder world! This new song is definitely not the personality that we see in J-Hope! It’s way too dark for his sweet bubbly personality! I was surprised when I saw and heard it. I definitely get the concept of wanting to get out of the box that Bang and Big Hit put them in as it has totally destroyed all their future plans. Greed and poor management will do it every time! Also, not paying attention to who you get in bed with business wise! K-pop has to realize that the American entertainment business sees how successful they are and are out to use the hell out of them! The Grammys was a perfect example as they used BTS to draw crowds and attention to the show with no intention of ever giving them an award knowing that they earned it in all criteria needed to win above and beyond any other group. BTS definitely needs to stay away from doing business with any of the American companies unless they do an awful lot of research to find an honest company, if that is even possible! J-Hope go back to your old self for the next personal song you release!

Very helpful! I certainly would slap the $*** out of someone if they slapped me first. I’m planning to visit So. Korea in the future; I love world history and exploring different cultures. I’m preparing myself and praying that I don’t experience some of the stereotypes I’ve heard so far. I’ve traveled to many places around the world including China and Japan, so hoping my experience in SK will be fabulous. 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽😘

@cventer8382 жыл бұрын
I find this topic SO fascinating, I came back to this video and had to comment again. South-Africans are so opposite, we are extremely tolerant and accepting of other cultures! Although birds of a feather do flock together, it remains very multi cultural. Shoot, NO, that slap, it's hurting my soul! You do get bullies here and I don't think anyone appreciates a bully! No flip, no one should tolerate such treatment. It's a BIG flaw in Korean society. No one is ok to be slapped, it's common sence! If it's your superior, you ARE going to go out of your way to tolerate the stress they have! But not physically assult, it's humiliating. You go straight to the police station and give a report of physical assult! Here is racial questions, if a white person slaps a back person or visa versa, you'll have a crowd forming VERY quickly, trying to get them appart, it's a very thin line to walk! The police and sector police would be on the scene too, it'll go on social media! No slapping here!!! It will be headline news... your face will apear all over the news and social media... 😆 Do go have a look. A South-African rugby player, Elton Jantjies (married with kids) very recently started an affair with the dietitian on the SA team. They got kicked off the team and the entire story became headline news. No sparing their identities or the details! Including alot of FB jokes about the matter. Like Oscar Pistorius and Valentine's Day jokes... they never stop. If you slap anyone at work that's your subordinate, you'll make a huge ass out of yourself!

Made me laught a lot when you said "when they project their own insecurities to you and its not okay for their mind" ohhhh yess yes.. haha had my old boss like this. He fired people after bullying then with words when we explained him why he was doing wrong job. Korea and the extremes.. lol Love also your beauty tips! Your skin looks amazing 👏 ✨️

The truth is - her in America has ALOT of bullying going on , so much so, the individual who gets bullied in some cases it usually ends up in School shootings- causing a massive massacre later on. It’s sad 😞 however no matter what. To humiliate another human being because of your own insecurities- is a mental issue -needing counseling.
