Oversize is easy. You just have ti show one slim body part to look elegant, like the ankle. The issue is THE CHEAP materials that are now everywhere have no fall, and hold no shape, so when you have even more of it it is sooo obvious what it is. And I don't mean cool things like PVC, more like zara oversized suits. barf barf barf

i think explaining the difference between an oversized fit vs sizing up on sizes should be covered too. This confusion could be one of the reasons why “oversized” doesn’t look good at times. Hope that makes sense 😅
@burgersuperking8 ай бұрын
Gigantic issue with current fashion and fashion market is that people instead of buying outfits exactly as on the runway, buy pieces here and there and try to be 'creative'. Going to a high-end brand and trying on head-to-toe runway look will teach any person SO MUCH about the correct fit, drape, styling, cut, etc., like much more than years of studying color theory, Pinterest boards, listening to style advice here and there etc. Why high-end brand? Because collection pieces are tailored in accordance to each other and often are interchangeable and intercompatible like lego sets, and sizing is usually very precise, to an extent that t-shirt neckline or sort collar are proportional to blazer lapels, jackets fall where they should, drape is correct, etc.

I love that you actually go in-depth and unpick the “why” and the “what if” of fashion (and also get into some of the history of it) instead of the same old repetitive & obvious “here’s 5 ways to wear this that you’ve seen on 50 other fashion channels ☺️”. Keep on keeping on.

You talk about fashion and style like an artist. 🤗👏 For instance, you broke down the silhouettes and proportions into basic 2D shapes and talked about the way garments lay on the 3D form. This is so refreshing. The positive points you discuss about oversized looks are exactly what I love about them too- using dramatic silhouettes to change shape and envelop your body. It uses the magic of illusion. ✨ As for the garment examples, I personally don’t need to see actual recommendations in the video. I think what you’re doing now is great-You give a variety of examples, and people can easily use keywords to find affordable versions! But I’m sure it would be helpful and well-received by others if you do have the time and energy to do a written blog posts outlining some affordable examples from each video! 😊 Love your content! ❤

Thanks for pointing out the 3 categories of the oversized styling. Wearing oversized clothing one way or another or mixing them up has been my favorites in the last several years and I don’t think I will ever give up. So easy to style and forgiving to my aging body. I’m 65 yr old female, Asian looking, and have 5’2” height. Fortunately, My body is on the slim side but as you said it doesn’t really matter. Your clear explanations of what can be helpful in styling oversized things on our bodies help me understand why certain things look and feel better for me. Thank you! Btw, what is the hair product you use to create a slick hairstyle? I think i saw it on one of your videos but now I can’t remember. Thanks again.

Colour is just as important as fit in my opinion. One cut is not superior to another. Depends on the person and their style goals. As I got older I realised our own tastes and preferences will change over time as well. Fun fact: fast fashion brands love oversized because they can save money by not tailoring or having to do multiple fittings!

love oversized everything! also love avant garde but am not cool or rich enough for it; great inspiration though. Just wanted to add; if anyone's looking for quality pieces with good fabric on more of a budget, vintage is the way to go. Hard to find your exact size anyway since the sizing is so different! Or second hand, there are some brands that do pretty good quality which are pretty easy to get for a good price. (especially European Vinted, for example there is an abundance of Max Mara vintage/second hand)

The thing with y2k style is those pants fit in the waist but were that baggy. Some were so baggy you could fit 2 legs in the one pant leg. That's the key to making that style look good. If you just buy pants 2-3 sizes up it will look bad imo.

About the belt: I'm not sure if it fits your style (I'm a man and don't like dressing up in a suit/wool pant type of way), but I love the Patagonia friction belt 😅 it is very low-key and does not draw much attention from the rest of the outfit, has nice girth to go well with different types of pants (jeans, cargo, dress pants) and the buckle gives off a tech-y modern energy without looking overwhelmingly technical. And it's dirt cheap :)

I agree with what you said about shapes or silhouettes in this video, but I also think its a lot of trial and error to get that right. That probably just kind of proves the growing pains theory that you had in the beginning. But Id like to add that these days I think there is less freedom to experiment. With the expectation to have a possibility to upload our looks onto social media (even if we dont) it adds a new layer of hesitation that makes experimentation a little harder for the individula. Perhaps thats why we get such confused trends now, we all follow so many style guides that the idea of havign our own style is harder to define. I guess Im just rambling thoughts, but your videos always do this to me 🥰 big love
@tubaavalon Жыл бұрын
I think it's true that we are trying to categorise certain aesthetics more, because we also just have more going on overall, in the 80's it was less, but more extreme. On the other hand I feel like social media has led to a stage like feeling for many fashion friends, that like to showcase their eccentric looks even more, that they probably don't even pull off outside. There is both I think, people that like to classify themselves and others that see it as an empowering individuality space ☺

New subscriber here! I cannot explain how much I loved this video! I started getting into oversized clothing precisely cuz I feel more confident when I don’t show my body, and ever since I’ve been trying to find the right kind of oversize that fits me, and with this realized I lean more towards the elegant with a bit avant-garde styles. And what you said about fabrics is soooo on point! As a 30 year old, I’m now enjoying choosing carefully the clothes I buy, relating to fit and fabric, and invest in quality rather than quantity. I still have some trouble with pants since I’m very tall, and also long torso so finding ones that are actually long and at the same time high waisted is a bit of a challenge.

I usually go with some linen, but I always feel like the look needs a coat to be considered complete. 😂 Love your content!

On belts: try vintage men's belts. I have found a slim YSL with a silver/gold buckle which is also reversible black/brown. Also, a tip would be to look for really good leather vintage men's beltse and examine the back side, sometimes they are more interesting worn reversed with the untreated leather exposed. You can get very cool shades of grey and brown when worn like that, provided that the buckle can work, but that can be adjusted as well with slight DIY. Great work. Me likes.

Very interesting video. Some of the "historical" points were a bit off from someone who lived through those times and was very dialled into fashion. As far as belts are concerned buy men's belts. They are much higher quality because they are meant to be utilitarian. I purchased a hole maker (various sizes on one wheel) for leather goods and punch my own holes. 😊

For a good belt before I forget: The best is to go to a leather smith? if thats how you say it. Usually boutiques where people who hand make bags will sell belts and will usually be more then willing to custom make a belt for you (picking from available weathers and hardwear they have and hot thick you want it as well as sizing to fit your body because belts that are to long suck)... its usually not super expensive either because its not that much leather and hard wear or work for them like making a bag...And it'll last you a liftime. If you are in Europe I feel like it is easier to find (for an affordable price, and in big cities like NYC or Paris it'll be more expensive). I got mine from my partner's uncle who had a shop in Périgueux, but he closed his shop and retired after like over 30 years of working his craft. But places like that. I have a belt that matched a little bag he made for me... I wish I had gotten other things before his shop closed. I also don't where belts very often, so that one I have and the few I inherited from my dad will do :P

I find that slim ppl enjoy such immense privilege.... they dont realize that their thoughts & observations apply to them and them only. They sometimes give some lip service and throw in a photo of someone not skinny. But they do not think about how the fundamentals of their suggestions impact larger people. Oversize is a completely different ball game on anyone a size 12 and up Smaller people look cute and childlike in oversized clothes. They can hide in them and the contrast makes them look diminuitive. They can also look edgy and "smart". THIS is whats been in style- as fashion continues to play with its 2 fav tricks- adrogyny and celebration of the child-like This is NOT how oversized plays out for larger or curvier people. Oversized clothes do NOT give us that effect. Take a wide leg trouser... it looks FUNDAMENTALLY different on a large person when hangs from the widest part of the hip. This creates an extremely large opening at the bottom which is guaranteed frump. Or think of someone very large chested with an oversized shirt hanging straight from their boosom. It creates a tent effect. I DO think larger people can participate in oversized look but it needs to be with our own set of rules. Lazy creators with massive blind spots tell us "it works for everyone... its just your fatphobia thats the problem". It absolutely is NOT the problem. We know how to make our bodies look good- and it requires a unique approach to oversize, tailoring and paying attention to the projection and hang of fabrics fall from our curves. We have to have something crisp in the mix lest we look like a giant round mound of fabric. These comments arent primarily for you... they are for all creators who chastise ppl for recognizing all trends dont work equitably for all people. Its far more than "growing pains"
@cap4life13 ай бұрын
I appreciate your sharing this. But I also sharply disagree. As a larger woman (46/40/46”) with a larger tummy who I think dresses better than average, this video is still helpful to understand the different styles of oversized. I personally wear the more avant garde oversized and without a doubt know that it looks good on me. I’ve personally seen larger people wear the more elegant oversized with bright colors and they looked AMAZING. Oversized on people with a large bust:waist:hip ratio can look fantastic when you scale the proportion to the largest part of the body. For example, take pleated wide leg pants on someone with larger hips and larger tummy. Most pants have darts from waist to hip which this person won’t need so darts should be let out. Pleats can be rearranged to have the fabric drape over the tummy and hips instead of hugging these areas. Side seams can be let out for extra ease. Seams from hip to hem can be slightly tapered to avoid the frumpy look you mentioned. Fabric is also super important, a good wool drapes beautifully on any body. Also, pants are the hardest thing to fit well and no matter the body shape, we will all need to get our pants tailored if we want them to fit perfectly. If you just want pants that look good esp on larger bodies out of the box, traditional straight cut wool pants are the way to go. I have seen with my own eyes plus size people who look incredible in pants that actually fit them.

It does it's job of keeping pants in place very well since there is no holes punched, instead you just put metal pin thru the braided structure of belt. Brands you can search for, for interesting functional trousers are Y-3, mfpen, amomento, cos and many Jil Sander wool pants as well, that go for very reasonable prices (you need some luck, but quality is usually great)

@@tubaavalon FOUND: 99% wool black trousers at the thrift store. BOUGHT the beautiful item right away. I wrote you a much longer description but have since moved this to my private notes because I could not send what I could not end...haha you have inspired me to the moon.

I have a tiny head so oversized jackets look absolutely ludicrous on me.

Wear a bigger hat or bigger hair to balance.

Reasonably-priced, leather, happily boring belts can sometimes be found at J Crew or Banana Republic in the U S. Can't you wear any small men's belts?

Ummm...oversized clothing is not new. Ask anyone who was not living under a rock in the 80's. This trend will come and go,, as fashion is cyclical. Another point I would make is that FASHION IS THEATER. One can explore and indulge in these trends without getting lost in them. Knowing yourself, and your body, you should create your own personal style, then perhaps adjust it somewhat to include some elements of current trends.

yes absolutely, the video is about people that don't understand oversize dressing and would need some structure to categorise. Fashion is always theatre 💘
