Interesting. I have been doing this for decades. Never had a name for it, but I always thought of it as a lazy bunnyhop because I would always let my front tire land first so I could use it to help leverage the back wheel up by push forward with my arms. Pretty cool and definitely comes from trials where your goal is to get over an obstacle instead of completely clear it like I did riding BMX for so many years.
@Furao806 жыл бұрын
I've heard it called a jack rabbit. We mostly only have logs to get over out here, so punching up something long enough for the wheelbase isn't something we get to practice often. I can't bunnyhop for poop, but I can get over a 2ft log!

@nahfamimgood7 жыл бұрын
well... i mean technically i guess you always bunny hop out of manuals... now that you found that balance point you should be able to bunny hop as high as possible because you found that balance point where you cant get the front end any higher up. I ride bmx aswell and when you do things such as 540s on banks it requires alot of height and im to weak to naturally pull it up so i put my body into the manual position to get the front end up.

Jeff, in 5:30 you’re not compressing as the front wheel touches you’re already exploding, aren’t you? This one looks identical to a Bunnyhop. Aren’t you compressing before lifting the front wheel?
@JeffLenoskyTrailBoss2 жыл бұрын
It's similar but I'll lifting my front wheel then letting the rock slow my bike down as my body continues forward at the same speed, that builds the beend in my arms that allows me to thrust the bike forward for the second part.

Something I almost never see talked about is incorporating technical riding into a longer cross country ride. For efficiency I like to ride with a proper seat height to maximize power for pedaling but often forget (or don't have) a way to drop my seat and wind up trying to get up or over stuff without changing that. Most places I ride (I'm in NJ) like Allaire SP, Hartshorne, Chimney Rock, etc have few places that really require big moves but when I travel and ride places in NC I feel like a fish out of water with all the large rocks. I just found your channel, going to watch some more videos but a video discussing these kinds of moves on a smaller scale for XC or recreational riders would be cool.

What about doing a video on giant felled trees(probably more of an east coast issue)? I’m having a lot of problems rolling over them without going over the bars.They usually have a crude steep ramp to climb the trunk, usually my front wheel drops as I follow the contour of the tree with the front tire! I’m Trying to blast it with more speed but experience a lot spring from the rear shock. I hope I described it properly.

@cgsrtkzsytriul7 жыл бұрын
Note that the basic idea is to convert forward motion into upward motion by slamming the bottom half of the wheel into the object. Ideally you want to hit both wheels to get maximum lift with the least effort. Just hitting the rear is very efficient for small obstacles and is called a "bump jump".
@davidmain86963 жыл бұрын
I've struggled with the bunny hop but have been doing this as a "cheat" and feeling bad about it. Now I feel good about it and that is because I know there is a path forward for me. I need to do the punch forward at the end and then I'll stop getting stuck on the top which caused me to do a foot plant to get unstuck. I'll start punching harder now. Thanks.
@chriswood96932 жыл бұрын
Jeff, one thing you never comment on is if you ever use your brakes to let you re-center on the really big punches. At the 6:17 mark of the video you are going up a pretty big rock, and it looks like you might brake, and pull yourself back to center. Thoughts?
@mtbrdag6 жыл бұрын
I've gone over large log and rock obstacles using this method for years, and never heard a name for it. Two things though: 1) I can't bunny hop worth a darn and 2) I do this clipped in and have never done well with platform pedals. Which makes taking dabs a little bit harder, but also makes pulling the back end up a lot easier. Great video!

Great video...I find this move more useful on trails than bunny hopping, and it's key to cleaning technical climbs. That said, you could say this is a two-part bunny hop for use at lower speeds. If you do this at high speeds...that's pretty much a bunny hop. Still, I think punching is more useful and common skill day to day.

If you have your seat high ( for easy peddling ) , I don't see the advantage of a punch , you're still going to want to drop your seat when doing this compared to a bunny hop. Correct me if I'm wrong...
@JeffLenoskyTrailBoss7 жыл бұрын
Dawn Moon hey Dawn, good question. Here's a couple reasons. If your seat is up there's a chance you're climbing and bunnyhopping needs speed. One you get this skill down you can literally do it from a track stand if you needed to. Second, when my seat is down and I have a little speed I'll usually bunnyhopping stuff but realistically with my seat all the way up I'd be lucky to clear a 1 foot tall log. Using this technique I can easily go over stuff twice as high with my seat up and way higher with the seat dropped. If you get this down you could probably have similar results (meaning doubling your bunnyhop)

Hi Jeff, thanks for your tutorial. Can you show the punch at high speed in a video over a small obstacle? It seems to me, that the punch, as you show it in this video, is a great trials technique - but the bunny hop is more a trail move. Riding down a trail I do lots of small bunny hops for better and smoother line choice. I also use small bunny hops for clearing gaps in the bikepark etc. How would the punch be fitting for that? Greetings, Marc
@JeffLenoskyTrailBoss7 жыл бұрын
Hey Marc, high speed I still bunnyhop everything that's under a foot or so. If it's higher I'm looking for a rock or root to jump off otherwise I'm slowing down and doing this. The title was obviously intended to draw attention however I live on the east coast so I'd estimate I'm punching 75 percent of the stuff on the trail and bunnyhopping the other 25. It works on climbs, high stuff, out of turns etc. You'll definitely benefit from having both skills at your disposal.
@marcbrodesser857 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your reply Jeff! As I don't have a trials background I don't attack really high obstacles like the table in your video ;-) Great technique, I will spread the video. I understand that you chose the title for more attention and I hope most of the viewers don't take the title too serious, because the bunny hop is for most of the "normal" riders such an important basic skill. Looking forward to more tutorials from you. I do hoe to videos in german, if you visit Germany it would be great to film together, here is my channel with over 22 k followers: kzbin.info - greetings from germany (still love your NWD-segment shot in cologne etc. - what a classic legendary video part!)

So here’s the thing I use to bunny hop on a bicycle, but I spent a lot of time doing motorcycle trials. I feel like I trained the bunny hop out of my system by forcing myself to do either a double blip technique or a zap. Because in motorcycle trials you cross obstacles at a slow controlled pace. These techniques allow for that kind of riding. If you ride trials you know what I’m saying. So, should I try to relearn the bunny hop or amend my zap technique for higher speed XC racing. Do you have any advice. Jeremy

Jeff, would you recommend doing a punch to get over 16 inch cyclocross barriers? In other words, would a punch be easier and less likely to cause an over the handlebar? If yes, what part of barrier should we aim to punch, the sharp edge of the 2x16 or maybe an inch below the edge? Thanks!
@JeffLenoskyTrailBoss4 жыл бұрын
Hey John. I think a punch is perfect. Here’s why. Barriers are usually put in weird spots where you don’t have a lot of speed or if you do there’s usually a couple in a row. A punch is a slower speed technique than a bunnyhop and you get your wheels back on the ground sooner. As far as spotting your wheel. I’d say front edge. When you go for the top by the time you make contact you’re front wheel is practically past the obstacle and your chainring and rear wheel are a fraction of a second away from making contact. Another reason is a punch is way easier with the seat up than a bunnyhop. All that make sense? Lmk
@digvt7 жыл бұрын
So it's a bunny hop timed with the obstacle so that the tires don't leave the ground for as long and the obstacle helps you get high?

Funny, I was just about to ask about this because I have watched your Trail Boss videos about 3-4 times each recently and I notice that your body rarely ever shifts far forward or backwards on the trail. When you get to rock steps and tricky rock beds with rock rollers, you generally seem to do the English bunny hop a LOT. I also try to determine why you sometimes stand almost the whole trail, and sometimes you sit more often. I guess on downhill sections, you mostly stand. Also, I noticed that you rarely manual off a drop unless its like a 6 footer. I was expecting to see you land back wheel first, or at least both wheel at the time time, more often, like you do in trials demos.
@JeffLenoskyTrailBoss7 жыл бұрын
Landing back wheel first is the smoothest but it kills forward momentum which you need pretty often. Your best bet is to keep your body central and let the bike move back and forth. Last but not least, I usually stand on technical decents and flats because you can move the bike more and I sit (floating not all my weight) on climbs or flats where I want the most traction.
