Last May my wife and I were packing for a trip to CUSTER and when I was loading up the generator the wife said - we have a site with power why bring it so I left it home - needless to say day 2 in CUSTER. A storm came thru and a tree took out the power pole - no power for 2 days - now I’m allowed to take the generator on every trip 🍻

I was working in Scotland in the early 80s and the power went out to the company home... for 5 days. No generator, no fireplace, no heat in the winter. I had to move to a hotel for all but one night, the night I needed to drain the water from the house so the pipes wouldn't freeze. I slept overnight and would wake up so see my breath. I remember that night well.

I just bought a 3500 for my camper. Before that I had a 900 watt tailgator. The tailgator allowed me to run the furnace, tv and lights. It would only run about 4 hours on a tank but it was far better than nothing.

Timely video. I've been debating removing our generator in order to reduce weight and increase storage, which is important in a class b van. Our power needs aren't that much and mostly we run the generator to exercise it. As we're preparing to take longer trips it would be a bummer to have no power because we have experienced that for a day in a CA campground. Didn't think much of it since we were only there a day. To not have power for days, I think I'll keep the on-board generator. My dad would share your love of Harbor Freight. After he was released from the hospital from cancer surgery he didn't have the energy to do much. He was so excited though because they were opening a location in his town. We took him to the opening where he sat in the car and was just so happy to see everyone going in and then coming out with new toys!

Awww, what a sweet memory of your dad and Harbor Freight! Yes, it's true that California will shut the power off for days and, as I said in the video, that happened to me three times. Then in South Carolina we arrived at a campground where they were putting in new sites and had the power cut off for hours. Well, on a hot day that would be torture in a camper. Thanks for watching and commenting!

Great video! A week ago we were at Palm Springs Thousand Trails. It was 97 degrees outside and the power was shut off to the whole campground because of an electrical accident where someone was injured. We didn't have power until about 9:30 that night. Having a generator makes you feel much more comfortable knowing you have back up power whenever you need it. We have a Wanderlodge motorhome with a 12kw generator and we have used it many times. Our power has gone out at the house and we just go out to the motorhome and crank up the generator, in the summer time in Florida it has saved us with a cool place to sleep. Thanks for the video!

About sound levels. For every 3 db increase means roughly double the noise level. And I think you are correct. If the Gens aren't firing at the same time you would have more of a constant sound and not a louder sound.

Recently at a private campground in MI. A car accident took out a pole. The whole campground came out to watch the sparking show. Power was estimated to be out three days. We don’t have a generator. Luckily, the State Park two miles down the road had an opening so we moved. In five years of traveling, that was the first time something like that happened. Since we are not fulltimers, it just wouldn’t be worth it to get one. However, we may change our minds due to campground crowding.

The issue with generators is that you have to carry fuel to run them and as you said is the noise. I have a solar generator combined with with 600 watts of solar panels. Also, I have a DC to DC charger device that gets power from the truck alternator. All this is stored in the bed of my pickup truck. I can easily at will connect this to my travel trailer. In the solar generator I have 300 AH lifepo4 batteries. I don't use the air conditioning when dry camping.

I got tired of smelling gasoline and dangers of spills or vapors. I have a 3500 Honda and a 3500 Predator. I put a propane conversion kit on both of them. The gas tanks haven't had any gasoline in them for a couple of years. No stink or vapors. The pipe that's under the side of your fifth wheel where you can connect your barbeque has a quick connect on it. I bought a special hose that is made to connect to that pipe and on the other end there is a regulator that comes with the propane conversion kit on the generator. No more hauling gas cans around. No more mess or danger. And the exhaust fumes coming off of the generator won't kill you. That's why you see propane powered fork lifts in ware houses. I leave the generators in the back of the truck. And I run them right there. If I don't want the vibration coming through the hitch into the trailer, I just unhook the trailer from the truck for about an inch or two. I never have any problems running low on propane.

I just bought my first generator (Westinghouse IGen4500DF), and will be using it while driveway-docking at my son's house (a 5-acre spread that he's homesteading) over Thanksgiving. I don't look forward to lifting it, but I do have ramps and a two-wheel dolly that should get it loaded and unloaded well enough. My RV is a 27-foot Jayco Feather light, and I anticipate this generator will do well for it. Your experience is a comfort to me, in that I really didn't want to spend the money on one since we camp where there is electricity, but hearing horror stories of the power being shut off helps me not regret the purchase so much. God bless you well!!!

Great episode. I have two of the 2000 Honda portable generators. They are great and probably the quietest on the market. 64db range. Easy to talk standing beside them. I have the jumpers and easily run a 30 amp system and they weigh 40 lbs each. I also added a 6 gallon remote fuel tank that will run both generators for a couple of days. they're really quality and come with a price of $1,000 each. We just downsized and bought a new Grand Design Momentum toy hauler and I had them install a 4000 watt Onan generator that runs off the 30 gallon built in fuel tank. We can run both AC units (with soft start) as long as we put the hot water heater on propane. We live in Florida and you will need two AC units mid-summer to September. Best of both worlds now. My wife and kids have been dd in the past. I rigged up thru my plug to charge the camper battery and kept spares in my truck to hookup to also. They were golfcart batteries. We could run nearly 40 hrs before I had to start the truck to recharge. Oh I installed a 240a high output alternator to. But we also had the trusty champion. So we ran it during the day and the Batts at night. A week was never an issue. 10 days 1 time. We had to refill the 3 extra gas cans 2 times. Not that big a deal other than 7 miles to the gas station. On the new trailer we're getting I'm already looking into solar and new lifepo batteries and some supercap batteries for the backup. Even putting extra in the truck with vehicle charging capability also. And that trusty generator. I like the 3500 hf. May get 1. I have a trucker friend that uses 1 on his rig. 5 years in and still going although you can tell it needs replacing. Thanks for the videos

My wife and I are pretty much solar capable. 1000 w solar and 400 amps of LIPO4 batteries. BUT I still carry a generator. With me at all times. You just can’t depend on the sun shining whenever you need it. And even if it is, you can’t always park your trailer in the sun. (Having portable panels helps with that.) Its kinda a game with us as to how long we can go without starting a generator. Plus, like many, I don’t like the noise and fumes from mine or anyone else’s, so we try to minimize running them to a bare minimum. But the real overriding reason we carry one is for running our AC and microwave. It saved our bacon last year when we encountered record highs in the Pacific Northwest. I could run the microwave on our solar setup if I was to buy a bigger inverter, but the AC just isn’t practical. We currently use a duel fuel Champion and believe me I feel the pain when lift it in or out. Honda has announced a new compact 3200 watt with fuel injection that only weighs about sixty pounds, so I’m going to look into one if it’s not to much.

I bought a Honda 2000 when I bought my trailer years ago. Did a lot of boon docking and have used my generator hundreds of times. But even when I am not boon docking for long periods of time, I still keep a working generator handy. What I mean by "working" is that I keep gas in it, along with at least one gallon in a separate container. I put gas stabilizer in all gas, so that it does not eventually turn to lacquer. Further, I start my generator and let it run for about 10 minutes every two weeks, so as to keep everything lubed and for easy starting when I do actually need it. Even in parks that have all amenities, power goes out for assorted reasons. If I need the generator, it's ready to go. In my experience, a single 2000 W generator will run my 9,000 BTU AC, but then it's running at absolute full capacity. So, I'm thinking that a single AC with higher BTUs will require more than 2000 W. Also in my experience, when my generator is running at full capacity, it is considerably louder than at idle, so you could do a decibel test while running in higher capacity to learn which generator is quieter in that circumstance. Thank you for sharing your own insights.

Decibels are not a measure of how much noise there is, but rather, how loud the noise is (the amount of pressure it creates). You can have 1,000 generators running, and if each one is 80 db, you will have a ton of 80 db noise. So 2 generators at 80 db is twice as much quantity of noise, but the loudness is still just 80 db. Where as, when my daughter screams, it’s 120 db, giving me a headache with a very small quantity of noise.

Tell me if this's accurate: After losing lawsuits because of faulty maintenance and antique equipment -- then going bankrupt and selling everything of value -- the judge awarded the lawsuit winners... ...PGandE stock. . Apparently, entire cities were burned to nothing because of PGandE malfeasance. I am familiar with two: * Paradise, California * Middletown, California with hundreds of fatalities and billions with a 'B' in destruction. . And the judge gives you stock in a bankrupt poorly-managed company. Huh.

I have a 30 foot bumper pull trailer. We found a generator rack that mounts on the front frame of the trailer. Our Predator 3500 sets on the rack above the propane tanks and I never take it down, even to change the oil or service. I cut 4” by 4” hole on the rack to drain the oil since the Predators drain is on the bottom. I bolted it down with small chains with shrink wrap over each wheel. Solid and would be very hard to steal. Plus I have a locked cable for added security and a generator cover while traveling. I did have to change my propane tank cover from a hard cover to a soft cover to get tanks off for refills. No big deal. The new Predator 3500’s have the gas gauge now. As a added note, the 3500 suffers for air at high altitude. We camp at 9500 feet in Colorado and had to leave the side cover off or the generator would carbon up the exhaust screen and spark plug. I have since drilled holes in the cover and a couple other places to solve the problem. I live near Yosemite, and the last time I talked to you, you had just had the accident at the gas station in Atwater.

A generator, large batteries, and solar aren't the only things you need to think about when prepping for a campground power failure. In the campgrounds I've stayed in, the water is pumped by electricity so that fails quickly when the power fails as well. Another thing you may want to consider when buying a new generator is a propane unit. You simply carry an extra cylinder or two and then you can power the generator in addition to having spares for the RV.

As they extract taxes without investing in maintaining the facade: * forestry maintenance suffers, * the electric grid experiences rolling brown-outs (inevitably leading to complete collapse), * municipal services -- fire, LawEnforcementOfficials, ambulance -- withdraw to the safety of their compounds, * water and sewage systems have less separation as plumbing rots. . SeaGypsyPhilosopher Ray Jason has a different title for them: * TheMalignantOverlords Based on the evidence, I think these also fit: * 'parasites' and 'locusts'

I'm not an engineer yet but I have taken a few classes. My understanding is that sound, for the most part, is not accumulative. As in 78 dB plus 78 dB does not equal 156 dB. When you get into wave theory you can amplify and reduce one sound wave with another which is how a lot of noise canceling headphones work but two devices together will not add their dB output like that.

The newer inverter gen sets do have cleaner power for computers n such. Do love the cleaner burn and don't concern bout clogged carburetors etc. Your 2 2000 W gen sets can be used signally while changing oil etc and are practical for continuous supply just wish they ran on the cleaner propane.

FYI: The newer HF Predator 3500 generators now have a fuel gauge in the top. I've had mine for about a year and a half now. It has the gauge and has worked flawlessly. In my case, I can not left the Predator either. Or at least I should not. I have a popup camper with A/C. I made a small ramp to load my Generator into the camper for transport. All I have to do is roll it up into the front door and off I go. A 2,000 watt generator would work just fine for me if I would have installed the Soft Start feature on the A/C. But I didn't know about them at the time. By the way, I got gas in Chowchilla last weekend at your favorite gas station. Your infamous cement post has been repainted!

With a Class B, our needs are not large. And we don’t often stay put for more than a couple of days, so are usually driving and recharging the house batteries. The exception was Big Bend last year which had no hook ups and our rooftop solar took care of our minimal needs just fine. But we planned it so we weren’t there in the summer time. End of March, which was perfect. So 220 W of solar takes care of the fridge and separate freezer, charging our handhelds. And it was sunny, so no problems with cloudy days. We got plenty of sunshine to keep our two AGM batteries charged. I would like to get a Bluetti. The big fat one - the 2000 to 3000w so we could actually boondock and plug in some appliances. That would be ideal. But the generator on board the Travato is just a nuisance. We have run it once for one warm afternoon or AC was nice to have, although we probably could’ve gotten by with just running the max here on the batteries. But we had the generator so we used it. Other than that it’s a lotta maintenance for something we’ve used once.
@LizAmazing
@LizAmazing 2 жыл бұрын
And I've heard you need to exercise your generator once a month. And, of course, change the oil when needed. Glad you have the AGM batteries, have heard good things about them!

@Trish, Congratulations on small needs! . We agree. Instead of adding gizmos and adding noisy expensive -- and fussy -- petroleum-based genset(s) for more electric, we constantly leave our gadgets in the Exchange Pile at camp. . That 'exercise' myth could be accurate. And yet, I look at classic restored cars, sitting in museums for years, and their electrics seem to do just fine without 'exercise'. I do not know enough to form an opinion.

@@largemarge1603 Travatos come with a generator whether we want it or not. Initially I thought, “Generator - great!“. And then I found out that, as Liz commented above, you have to run them for an hour every month & change the oil frequently on them. So we’ve had the Travato for two years except we didn’t go out for the first year because of lockdown restrictions, so have only been on two major trips and several short local trips. A total of 11,000 miles. And yet, yet, we have to run the stupid generator for an hour every month, wasting gas, wasting our time, polluting the environment, plus paying a shop to change the oil for us (many owners do their own oil changes, but ours is up in a dirt lot, we’re in our late 70s, early 80s, and we choose not to do that stuff anymore:). Generators are a nuisance for the sort of camping we do, although if you were a full-time I could certainly see the need for one as a back up. But the big fat Bluetti, I could run something like an air fryer, and induction oven, which is great if it’s windy out and not easy to use a camp stove with flame. And you can even run your air conditioner (with SoftStart) with the biggest Bluettis; just plug your electrical cable into one and you can run your A/C several hours …on your Bluetti!

In Australia, you would not be allowed to run a generator in any van park. Many free or low costs parks do not allow them either, and when they do, there would be a ban after 9 or 10pm. Much more reliance on solar panels and batteries for the van. We avoid going away in the height of summer to hot places, so no AC needed, and our heater is diesel powered. Saying that we do have a Honda 2200 generator, but have used it very few times, but it was handy.

Great info! Harbor Freight gets a "bad rep" sometimes for products. I've had a 3500 for about 3 years now. It has almost 800 hours on it and runs like a champ. I added a remote start and wired in a shut-off switch that shuts off the fuel flow to the carb. It's life has been in the bed of the truck too. I really like the idea of the 2 smaller gennys. The 3500 is a beast and requires 2 strong backs to get it in and out of the truck. I'll be watching your vids to see how you like the 2 gen setup long term. I would think it would work great for you two. Pappy

Hi Liz and Paul! I hope all is going well! The snow in Ouray CO is finally melting! Thank you for this informative video! You bring up great points to consider! I did install a pretty robust solar set up. But….it never hurts to have a back up power capability. I, too, wanted to get something that my wife has a chance to move, if need be. I really wanted one of those 4500w models with remote start that would power everything. But, fact of the matter is that most of our camping is in CO and the immediate surrounding states. We just don’t “need” the big power. And I don’t need the big weight. Safe travels!

I also have some solar on my TT, it will run lights, refer and keep the battery charged. Additionally, I invested in 2050 Wh solar generator and a soft start that will allow me to run the AC in a pinch all day if the sun is out and will keep the AC running through the night as long as the thermostat isn't set too low where it is running constantly. Another tip i read on yt re generators was the concern about the noise they make in the campground ie if your in close quarters. the guy said build a plywood square chute for it; hinged on 3 corners so it folds for storage. you start the generator then place the chute squarely around it, that way the sound goes upward and not outward to annoy the neighbors; apparently works well.

Great video, I love seeing what you come up with every week!! I am currently at a COE campground with hookups, but before this location I was boondocking in Arkansas for 11 days without a generator or solar, or cell service. We had tornado warnings for 3 days, Verizon didn't even come in. My NOAA radio was my friend. I did fine. Plenty of water, food, and shelter. Was it fun? No. But I feel great that I made due and accomplished other things because I wasn't distracted by technology. I planned to stay there a full 14 days, but I was harassed by a couple homeless people wanting rides into town, so I left at day 11...I think it's a want, not a need. My dogs kept me warm while boondocking in a 20 degrees winter vortex in Northern Texas last month. Sorry if I am more extreme than the typical RVer. (Solo female with 25 ft. travel trailer and 3 big dogs). My dogs are a need: warmth, protection, companionship, and entertainment sometimes lol. I am looking to get a duel fuel generator before next winter. Knowing how to do without one makes it a blessing, not an absolute need. Generators require fuel, and what happens if you are out of fuel? Lots to consider.

@Luann, 2003, we converted a 1996 Ford CF8000 commercial truck to our concept of an ExpeditionVehicle. . Our insulation: * adhesive-back acoustic against the wall, a gap, then * one-inch pink-board, another air-gap, then * two-inch foil-side poly. Excessively obsessive? . During our conversion, we were convinced we would freeze an untimely demise if the weather got below 68°f, so we acquired three Wave 3 catalytic heaters. . Real-world: We rarely use one heater... if the weather gets below 40°f. Above about 40°f, we are comfortable. . One advantage to home-made: Our windows are 3010 (three feet wide by a foot tall) dual-pane sliders designed for a stand-still house. We mounted these at our eye-level standing inside, about eight feet above pavement. . On the rough back-country tracks we prefer, small windows are a small target for branches and FOD. . In your situation, small windows would be small targets for jealous by-standers. . On skoolie and other DIY home-made forums, first-time builders criticize our choice of windows: * "I could never live in your cave, I need to be surrounded by yuge picture-windows for plenty of light!" . And those yuge windows make it impossible to regulate heat gain/loss. . Our experience is based on a half-century of full-time live-aboard in a wide variety of rigs, plus a year and a hundred thousand miles of delivering RecreateVehicles manufacturer-to-dealer and dealer-to-shows. Our experience includes BillionBuxBus conversions, as well as mass-produced. Each seems designed by distant -- non-camping -- committees determined to maximize profits at the cost of durability and reliability. . Indeed, we are convinced RecreateVehicle factory Quality Control consists of the purchaser camping in various repair-shop parking-lots for weeks, waiting on warranty authorization...

@Linda, Shoppers shop price first. I do this, too. . Example: A stout ExpeditionVehicle: * capable of full-time live-aboard for months off-grid traveling rough back-country tracks * constructed on a 'million-mile' commercial chassis. * they start at 300,000 fedbux. * they typically sell used for more than the new acquisition cost. * rigs from the 1960s, and earlier, are still going strong. . Compare that construction with a stereotypical American RecreateVehicle: * staples into particle-board * tiny axles, tiny wheels/tires * designed by a committee to appeal to impulsive price-shoppers * swoopy decals with interiors designed by drunken Romans straight from the casino * engineered for a couple weekend trips a year * typical price -- us$19.95 * re-sale value -- disposable, haul it to the dump. . Which draws your attention?

Look at it this way If you have 2 radio speakers set at the same volume its going to be as loud as if you had 1 speaker set at the same volume as the two. The sound might be fuller if they are apart and may travel further but not louder..

That's a great way of looking at it. Thanks. It's interesting how sound works!

Great video can't put a price on your back ! Also two 2000 watt generators you have a extra 500 watts . Also in a pinch if your neighbor 100 yards away needs power you can loan them one And if 1 breaks down you still have one ! I myself have 2 honda eu2200 and there great because I can run the extended fuel tank under them because they have a fuel pump . The bigger eu3000 does not have a fuel pump so the extra gas tank has to be above the generator . It may be the same case with the predator generators ?

Hi Ryan, no both Predators (2000 + 3500) have to be gravity fed. Paul says he thinks that's interesting that Honda has a fuel pump system. We love the flexibility of having two generators for sure. Enjoy yours!

I have one eu2200i and i actually debating if i shoud buy a 2200i Companion to have 30amp and add a gal tank extended fuel tank. The 30 amp could also help recharging my batteries when it is cloudy.

Great video. If you get the hughes watchdog surge +epo protector, they have app that tells you your watts, amps and voltage that you're using. I'm sure you probably already know that lol. Just sayin...

@@LizAmazing re -- propane scarcity We acquire 15# propane bottles at yard-sales. We probably have at least a half-dozen. A 4.2-gallon bottle lasts many weeks of puttering about. . Advantages to hand-portable compared to permanent frame-mount: * a couple can stay in camp while others go to town for re-fill * one can go to the picnic-table * one can be loaned to a caravan chum * easy re-fill instead of manoeuvring the entire rig to fit the pumper.

I bought a Westinghouse iGen 2500 at Sam's a few years ago. It's works fine and is fairly quiet. I've been happy with it. I do have a soft start on my TT. Running the AC really cranks up the generator and it gets noisy. If I had to run my generator at night while dry camping to keep cool, I might really upset anyone camped next to me! Also, not sure how long the gas would last running the AC for hours. I try to plan to have hookups if its going to be hot at my destination. Thanks for the info!

Thanks Kurt. Yes, when the A/C is on a generator can get pretty loud. Hope you never have to use it. But it's good to have if/when the power goes out. Have a great weekend!

Yes, the noise at night is too much, to think, I was berated because of a wind chime but that same person, ran a noisy generator all night long. I get tired of the “ it’s all about me- too bad about you” People. Unfortunately it brings out passive aggressive behavior in me. I’m done apologizing!

Sound is an odd creature, especially the way it is measured and also in the way you hear it. DB (decibels) is a logarithmic scale, which if you remember exponential charts, is basically what you are look at for sound. It is also a measurement of energy, not really volume. What this means is a 3 db gain in measured level is twice the energy. It then takes about a 10 db gain in sound level or sound energy for it to be noticeable to the human ear. So, in reality, you had a 1 or 2 db gain, which makes sense since you went from 3500 watts of generator to 4000 watts of generator and also went to newer equipment. No cancelling, though they might a bit if you can get them wired up in a split phase configuration for 240 volts.

After watching this video, I thought it would be so simple, but nooooooo it just couldn't be...... I bought a Honda EU7000iS and hooked it up and nothing -0-, zilch! Of course, I had to first buy an EMS - and of course - I had to buy a hardwired unit - and of course the first one didn't work - so after I installed the second one - plugged it into the house and - great! Then after 8 months of waiting here came the $6,000 generator. Plugged it in and started it up and nothing - then the EMS said "open ground" so I had to fashion a neutral bonding plug - now I'm wondering about grounding the generator where I would need to tap a ground or beat a rod into the ground. Any suggestions Paul? And by the way Paul - may I suggest a video on changing the oil using winter weight (5w-40) in your diesel truck. After I couldn't find any - anywhere - even online - I ended up paying over $15 a quart at the dealer - not to mention DEF is now $22 per 2.5 gallon (I bought 6, 2 months ago for $12 each.) Heads - Up
