Amazing content as always! What I’ll like to see is how can you get from a hardware synth to a personalized sample library. It is back breaking to carry all the hardware gear to a gig and sometimes just recording them on a track it takes all the fun of playing live. If you can share some light on how you approach sampling certain patches for live performance it would be great. For me, I feel that the best thing Mainstage can offer is letting you take a snippet of one’s studio into a small and easy to carry format.

Thanks for this post. It's answered some of my questions ... What does your MIDI/USB patchbay signal flow look like? I just picked up an iConnectivity mio XL in the hopes of integrating my independent MainStage 3 rig (MacBook Pro) with my MacPro Logic system (some 50' away). By the looks of your setup, you've figured this out. I'm wanting to combining my vintage MIDI gear with my more recent USB based keys/controllers. All the best.

You would set up an IAC MIDI bus to do that.

How would you record vocals with this set up.. I know you can run plugins with no latency like with a compressor and basic eqing to record in Logic with the compression baked on..

There are lots of ways to do it, and it really comes down to preference. If you prefer to track through FX, the downside is that you are baking that in and you have no options later. So, most people prefer to track with minimal effects, which allows you more options later in the mix.

I have a Focusrite 2ii2 and even with a low buffer, it's lagging bad.. it's difficult to record unless I go low latency mode and people are on youtube recording with at least the compressor on the track ,I can't even do that.

Hi , I just bought a m1 pro and when I’m useing MainStage it crashes when I’m editing fab filter eq ect and when I go in to activity monitor at the top I have AUHOSTING SERVICE ( MainStage ) which I didn’t have on my old laptop can anyone help ,thanks

Hi there! No, you don't have to buy anything in addition to DX Dreams; it is a completely standalone collection of sounds that load into MainStage, Logic, or Kontakt. And the Kontakt version runs inside the full version of Kontakt (not the "player" version) on Mac or PC. Hope that helps!

@@shadyshata yes, there are versions of MainStage (3.4.2 - 3.4.4) that will work on Mac OS Mojave (10.14.6) and possibly later…

Actually you CAN run an older version of MainStage on El Capitan. I'm running MainStage 3.3.2 on it. But you should upgrade to at least 10.13 if possible for a lot of other reasons. In my case, it's on a 2009 MacBook and 10.11 is the limit without hacking something.

I have Logic Pro installed but along music production I also play live keys does it make sense for me to buy MainStage because I'm worried about MainStage having the same sound library as logic so would I just end up copying or doubling the entire sound library?

@@peace4531 yes absolutely, because even though they share a library in common, MainStage is designed for live use and has a ton of amazing features catered to that. It's the best $30 you will ever spend for a live keyboard rig!

@@peace4531 no - they share the same library, and the apps know what's installed and what's not, so nothing gets doubled. Apple was really smart about that - they work beautifully together. I used both apps simultaneously when running my touring rig for years on major tours all over the world. Highly recommended!

You can buy MainStage on the Apple “App Store.” It’s only $30 and comes with tons of great stuff.

Yep - it's been there for ages. There are key commands for pretty much everything in Logic. 😁

Awesome! I went to the key command assignments in Logic (option+K) and searched “transient.” There *is* a global default keyboard shortcut to skip to next transient (^+,) or rewind to previous (^+.), but there’s *also* one to Trim Region Start to Next Transient (^+Shift+]) which would save two more keystrokes! 😎 If I could manage to memorize it lol.

Yes, but GarageBand doesn’t have near as much of the content that makes MainStage/Logic so compelling ;-)

You can only record a basic stream of what you’re doing in real time - it’s not a DAW.

Not really - GB is essentially "Logic light." It's an entry-level idea scratchpad that uses some of the sounds from MainStage & Logic.

I have a very low threshold of tolerance for blah blah blah stuff at the beginning of KZbin videos and I was not bored at all. As Jim says you can just skip ahead using the right arrow button on your keyboard. I do this all the time and you can just hold it down if you want. I use Studio One and I will be purchasing mainstage in order to get that great content. But then I'm not a keyboard player so maybe keyboard players would get bored more easily.
