@DM-fr8ky3 жыл бұрын
What type of car do u have ? And what year ?
@jamesmedina20623 жыл бұрын
Yeah I have 1.5 Civic and I let it idle a little too because if its stone cold and you drive away, it will spray double the gas it would need if it was warm so all the unburned fuel will wash down cylinders.
@hopeeberline4659 Жыл бұрын
I can see how that makes sense considering cars run rich while they're warming up. Maybe that is when most of the oil dilution occurs?
@slavikrybka Жыл бұрын
Cold start is the most exhausting working condition for an engine, and keeping it idle while warming up make it worse, because cylinders get lubricated only over 1600rpm , where oil pump produces enough pressure for squirters to work as they should if motor have them, and even more rpm, if cylinders lubricated with oil fog (common for old engines). So, going for a ride after the start is actually a way better scenario, if engine doesn't run full throttle.

I did a lot of research before I bought my 2023 1.5l Honda accord. Especially after years of seeing Scotty’s videos warning us about the 1.5l Honda engines. They’re not HORRIBLE their other engines are just better. I live in Arizona and the 1.5l engines here don’t suffer as much from the oil dilution as the 1.5l engines in colder states. Engines warm up fast here and burn off the extra fuel. The oil dilution is mainly caused when people drive short trips and don’t warm up their engines all the way. it’s more common in cold climates as I mentioned. Also Honda made a lot of mechanical and software updates for the 2023 accord 1.5l to avoid the dilution problem. Please understand that ALL GDI engines have some sort of slight oil dilution. Honda engineers designed the 1.5l with that in mind. What Scotty is referring to here is excessive oil dilution that Honda did not account for that can wear out your engine faster and cause mechanical problems. If you have a 1.5l Honda engine then change your oil more frequently than you would in a 2.0 or 2.4 earth dreams engine. Keep your coolant extremely clean. Just be super proactive on the maintenance. Hondas can last forever but you can’t neglect them. I had a 2.0 2018 Honda Civic and I loved that engine so much I made sure to buy a 2024 HRV that also had to 2.0 non turbo engine. However I went back a month after buying the 2024 HRV and decided I wanted to also buy an accord. I didn’t want a hybrid so my only option was the 1.5l turbo. Please do not buy a 1.5l turbo if you do not take ultra care of your car. I will be changing the oil in my 1.5l accord every 3k miles and every 5k miles in my 2.0l HRV.

With the hybrid you would have had an electric car with gasoline assist. And no turbos. And no sleazy mechanical CVT (I hope your car doesn't have the sleazy mechanical CVT) You could have had most of the electric car goodness without any of the electric car drawbacks. Doh! But you would still have GDI without port injection. Not a good thing.

I have a 2020 crv with the 1.5 turbo. Only 5,000 miles. So far zero issues with gas smell or dilution. We did the research before we bought it. We dont drive it short trips and get it out on the highway. It's the smoothest 4 cylinder I have ever owned. Any small displacement engine with direct Injection will dilute the oil if it is not properly warmed up and driven long distances. I had a 2017 civic with the n/a 2.0 and the last few months I owned it I only drove short distances and I had oil dilution problems. Its not just the turbo causing these issues like scotty says.

I disagree with Scotty on this one, to a certain degree. Yes, there are over a million L15B7s on Accords, Civics, and CRVs. But to be fair, the dilution issue is somewhat overblown. This only happens in rare circumstances where the engine doesn’t reach sufficient operating temps and cannot burn off excess fuel vapors. Over time it collects in the sump and slowly dilutes the oil over thousands of miles. But even in a majority of worst case scenarios, the maintenance minder intervenes well before excess dilution becomes problematic. The exception being excessive short trips in extremely cold climates. This has been backed by several hundred UOAs from 1.5T owners under a variety of operating conditions. Honda has addressed the “fringe” scenarios through a software update that limits the operation of the heater and related accessories following a cold startup. This allows the engine to reach operating temps much sooner, which in turns burns off any excess fuel. If you have a 17-20 1.5T and live anywhere where temps fall below 30*, chances are you’re covered under the extended 7 yr/unlimited mile warranty. I’ve yet to hear of any 1.5T owners requesting coverage due to valve lash, ring/sleeve wear, or similar issues stemming from excessive dilution.

My 2018 CRV with the turbo GDI engine has never had oil dilution. I do drive 8 miles at Interstate speeds to and from work each day. I followed the coolant temperatures with my Bluedriver OBD2 reader before and after the software update in zero weather. Before the update, the temperature never reached 140 degrees. After the update, it reached 165. Same trip and weather. I did look at automotive engineer's posts. They felt the problem of dilution was the engine not reaching a temperature high enough to vaporize the gas that blow byes the cold rings on every engine. GDI and turbo increases that amount. But if the engine reaches operating temperature, the gasoline vaporizes and does not dilute the oil. If you drive short distances and do not allow the gasoline to revaporize, it will dilute the gasoline. And when it is around zero, this engine does not get very hot.

The older Hondas have piston rings that press harder against the cylinder walls, and that reduces the flow of gasoline into the oil. The 1.5 civic SI variant doesn’t have this issue luckily, completely different engine, different setup, the crv’s and accords with 1.5’s are pretty plagued with the oil dilution issue…. And all GDI oil dilution engines have oil dilution it’s just a question whether it’s excessive, that 1000+ psi of fuel pressure being sprayed directly into the combustion chamber, a little makes it by the rings that’s to be expected, and the fuel that made it in, flashes off from the heat the engine produces, but if it’s excessive, a lot of gasoline mixes with the oil and cannot be burned off…

Scotty, please stop telling that bull crap "Oil dilution caused by GDI+turbo"! This dilution is caused by starting the cold engine. Then injected petrol/gasoline have no time to evaporate completely and partially stays on a cold cylinder wall where is being taken by piston rings down to oil sump. This is specific for all GDI-engines. Normally if you do complete warm up cycle for your engine all the petrol from the oil is being evaporated and sucked out by PCV system. Only if you live in cold area AND do a very short trips only then this will become a problem after some time.
@TowTruck8163 жыл бұрын
No! Fuel dilution is caused by fuel getting past the rings. Cold weather has existed for a long time and these fuel dilution issues new and showed up at the same time as GDI + Turbo. So you can blame it on the GDI + Turbo or you can blame it on bad piston rings. Millions of motors run just fine at cold temps so it's ignorant to blame it on that.

@@TowTruck816 Oh dear… I have my Civic with this L15BA engine and have npo problems with the oil dilution. I live on 57th parallel North in Europe. This is where south Alaska begins for US-reference. Typically I drive my car ~15-20 minutes long trips with 2 minute warm-ups on idle during winter. When you inject gasoline into intake manifold runners it has significantly more time/path to evaporate. In GDI-only injection case any engine is prone to have this dilution issue: it doesn't matter if it's NA/Turbo/Compressor. Modern engines become more thermal-efficient so it took more time to warm 'em up in the same cold weather. When the engine is fully warmed up injected gasoline evaporates immediately and that diluted gasoline in oil sump evaporates and escapes too. The problem occurs only for short trips for cold weather engine start ups.
@TowTruck8163 жыл бұрын
@@ShatNdd I feel like you're missing my point. Fuel should never make it past the piston rings ever. I have a Cummins X15 in my work truck high pressure common rail direct injection and turbo charged and virtually no X15 has fuel dilution issues and it certainly isn't considered to be common when it does happen. (granted it's diesel but the technology is the same) Bottom line if fuel makes it past the rings in any motor the rings are not doing their job.

People if you own one of the turbo 1.5 models (it'll say turbo on the top of the engine and all the new 1.5s are turbo engines) be sure to change your oil when due and get that software update recall done if you haven't!
