Agree 100% In 2020 I bought my stock, early build ‘99 C2 Coupe, manual with sport package and hollow spoke wheels for 20K US. And that’s from a Porsche dealer They had installed new brakes and 4 new N3 Michelins. A year later I had the IMS Solution installed. Of course I also did the clutch,flywheel and rear main seal. And water pump and fuel injectors 😂 But now I have a great running Porsche 911 for a fraction of the cost of any 911 that’s newer or older!

Yes that’s a lot of car for the buck especially when comparing the 997 which is not much more car but a whole lot more cash these days.

Great review. I have a 996.2 and I am very happy with it. I went the route of getting a low mileage cherry meticulously maintained by a life-long Porshe enthusiast. Modern enough for good reliability yet old enough for a traditional Porsche manual, naturally aspirated and analogue driving experience. It is also a game changer and life safer for Porsche that is now at a reasonable cost. Initially, I was just another follower in the crowd thinking the 996 is just not a good 911, but after studying these cars more, I got this car for pretty much the same reasons that you did.

Absolutely, they are great cars in their own right, and while they may not be the gem if the family, I laugh when people grossly overpay for an early gen 997 which is essentially the same car plus updated headlights. Double the cash? Nah, I am good. They are all great in their own way, and really the serious cars are reserved for the GT3 RS ad Turbo S etc. We are having fun with ours.

I have had 996.2 for 8 years & it’s a lot of fun. My valuation calculations were about like yours. I’ve driven great porsches , GT3, gt3 RS , GT4 , 993 , 996.1 , 944 , ‘73 T … for the price the 996 is a great car..

Had the opportunity to drive a 1992 911 turbo in 1992 down the Autobahn so much fun! Then went home and only able to purchase a couple 914's after seeing my $4.25 an hr income at that time 😂

I love the video! 😄 You're absolutely right, Mark. There's nothing quite like cruising in a cool sports car with the top down on a sunny day. I still have my old MR2 Spyder from the same year as your Porsche, and it's also a manual. I love putting the top down on a beautiful day and taking a ride around the city to see what's happening. It's an experience like no other! On another note, I also own a 2009 Hummer H3 Championship Series. It's a great car in its own right, but unfortunately, it comes with a fair share of annoying issues that really shouldn't exist. For instance, my check engine light has been on for years now, indicating a malfunctioning oxygen sensor. I've replaced all four oxygen sensors with OEM parts, as well as both catalytic converters, but the check engine light still persists. It's frustrating, to say the least. This situation has made me think twice about getting a C8 Corvette, maybe even a Z06. Given the number of little bugs and glitches I've encountered with my Hummer, I'm hesitant. Most of the time, it's not even the car itself; the dealerships pose the biggest problem. It's almost as if you have to search for a good dealer rather than just focusing on the type of car you want to drive. Unfortunately, here in Louisville, we don't have a reliable GM dealer. I can't even imagine taking my brand-new Z06 to one of them for servicing. It's a real concern when considering a new vehicle.
@markholubetz
@markholubetz Жыл бұрын
Hi Ermin, I agree, the service shops are often to blame with incompetence which can put a sour taste in the mouth. I have heard the z06 is seeing a few engine failures so time will tell, but I have seen people cold start a new car, rev the crap out of it and the. Turn it off so who knows, but time will tell.

That is awesome, and I agree it’s all the enjoyment that we get when driving is what matters and these 986 and 996 cars are a blast. Affordable and fun, what else do you need? Cheers

The true bargain is a 996.1 base MY 1999. That year still had the cable throttle and feels almost like a 993, very raw and very fun to drive! Those are definitely being over looked and will be very desirable in the near future.

Only 2005 and early 2006 997.1’s had the same IMS as the 996. Later 2006-2008 have the dual row IMS bearings that have a much smaller failure rate.

True but still a flakey design overall. Honestly for best durability the turbo and GT models

I think the 06-08 models had larger single row bearing rather than dual row but are considered the strongest per PCA video with Raby ..

I have a 996.2 cab and I use to worry about all the bad things that can go wrong but in reality if you look up any cars you will find horror stories no matter what car it is. Enjoy the 911 experience and drive it with joy! Ps I rather deal with a older 911 than some car that only runs off battery's that eventually will get weak or even worse burn out then what? Lol

Congrats on your 996. I also had a 996 convertible and sold it. While I did like how it looked, I didn't find it comfortable (my right leg hit the center console and left leg hit the door panel) and the seats felt flat and not supportive. It just wasn't a good fit for me. Today, sellers are asking for a lot more than what I paid for mine and personally I don't think they are worth the asking price. These cars are getting old so be beware of the following: the IMS bearing will need to be replaced at some point and even if was already done, be prepared to do it again because they don't last forever. Don't listen to the people who say that the IMS bearing issue is a myth or blown out of proportion. They are wrong. Once your engine blows your car is worthless. Forget about rebuilding the engine because it will never be right. Next, the convertible top/window/door micro-switches & sensors are a nightmare to deal with when they fail and most mechanics don't know how to deal with them. Mechanics are typically used to slinging metal and electronics are not their specialty. Another big issue is the transmission. If you have a manual tranny and the pinion bearing goes bad- it's not serviceable by most transmission shops because it requires a 20 ton press to get the gears off. For that reason an automatic would be the better choice. My advice to anybody thinking of buying a manual 996 is make sure you have a competent Porsche 996 mechanic nearby that can fix the manual transmission, microswitches and IMS bearing. If not, don't even think of getting one.
@markholubetz
@markholubetz Жыл бұрын
Thank you very much and that is true about the micro switches as I know we have a flaky one related to the passenger window. Hoping the gearbox is not going to be an issue but so far so good. I know there is always a little luck that goes with these but I do fortunately have one of the best Porsche mechanic in the area as a friend . True on the bearing, they still roll and cannot possibly last forever. Maybe, just maybe the car will outlast me. Lol. Hope you are having a great weekend. Did you swap out the 911 for something right after?

You are right again on that one and you own my dream combo I guess... a 996 and a Jag F-Type R... I could not ask for more. I was about to buy a good 996 5 months back also at a good price (for the market we are in atm). I did not pull the trigger because I was lusting for more (F-Type R)... and now a huge bill dropped in I need to pay and I cannot do the one or the other lol. Well, thats life I guess... You are a lucky pal to have both (and 5 years back I also had 2 toys... a 996 and an Elise... at that point of time that was my "best of both worlds" and I did not ask for more... but the engine on the 996 was broken after 5k km driving the car... and the Elise I sold at the beginning of this year (in order to refund my Jag...)... life does not always go to plan as it seems). Good content, Like!

I’d get a 986 Boxster S with the 3.2L engine.. more nimble, better handling, and with a couple of mods, the Boxster is an amazing car.. designed as a true mid engine convertible, instead of an after thought like this car. 👍
