I am also a restoration hobby participant. Your problem with the radiator hoses was totally Bubba’s fault. Doesn’t matter what kind of car, if it’s old, Bubba has been there and will modify or misuse any part anywhere. When I start a restoration I always look for Bubba’s work so I can correct it. Bubba really gets around!!!

38:12 That brought a real smile to my face. I know exactly (exactly!) how that feels. And the funny thing is, it is such a nice feeling that you (I...) end up doing it again and again. Much more satisfying than just buying something that runs. The down side is, it makes me bond with my cars and I end up never selling them. I now own 15... I have to say that I also love your attitude. I spent many years working as a tech and manged shops as well as owning my own shop. My attitude towards putting a car together is like yours: everything has to fit, everything has to snap in place, if there was a screw or cable tie there OEM it has to go back that way. Not that I am against modifying. Quite the opposite, all my cars are modified in some form. But it needs to look and function like it came from the factory. Kudos!

I share with you the same thought when it comes to "some cars are just good the way they are" as you grow older you really start to appreciate the simplicity of things and mostly in older cars. Sometimes less is more and anything can work and be functional as long as you take good care of it and give it the proper maintaneace.

The end was the best when you said there were a LOT of mods you could do but, you have matured to realize that driving a stock car is the best. I was 17 years old and a senior in high school when I got a 1969 Corvette t-top, auto, A/C, and every other option that was available (it was 1974 and it was only 5 years old- I didn't realize what I had). I was always tinkering with it and updating it instead of just driving it and doing maintenance. I now have a stock car that I simply enjoy driving. I did get all of the Weathertech items for it that I could but, it is so nice to just getting in, starting it, and simply driving off knowing you will get there. So- just enjoy the Porsche and all of your other cars!

Also, this car is pretty rare! It’s an early build (12/97-8-98), so it has a few interior specific things to that production group (one of about 3500), and it has amber tail lights. These early build cars are thought of to be the best 996’s. Hand built with the last 993’s. Also that color is awesome!

You can just tell Eric has that "hmm, it actually works" look 36:37-36:38. Eric, if you see this, I have still have a set of stock LT1 heads I'll give you if you still need them for your C4. Swapped them out for a set of AFR heads off a 97 Trans am in 2001ish. I don't want them and have held onto them for 20+ years now, time to go to a better home.

It's always nice to get to the point of a project where it's drivable. It definitely breathes new life into the enthusiasm you have for it. That being said, I spent two long days helping my Nephew swap out the suspension on his '08 Volkswagen Golf R32. The entire first day was almost entirely spent on changing the front sway bar. The whole front suspension needs to be essentially dismantled to get it out. The best part was the aftermarket bar he bought to replace it didn't fit. As soon as the stocker was on the ground next to the replacement, it was very apparent that it wasn't going to fit, so we had to do all that work in reverse to re-install the stock sway bar. By comparison, the front struts and rear springs and shocks took maybe half a day. I now own a set of triple square bits I'll probably never use again, as well as the bit to spread the front knuckle to get the strut out. So, between that experience and watching your experience with fine german engineering has pretty much cemented the idea that I'd rather walk than own a german car. Glad it's back together, though!

Nice to see a project come together. Cosmetically the only noticeable thing it needs is a good cut and buff to make the paint pop. I am only surprised that you didnt use a constant pressure clamp on your hoses but opted for worm clamps. Good job overall and hope you continue to enjoy driving it.

As a recovering German car guy myself, and ASE master tech... try out using spring clamps on all your cooking system hoses. You have plenty of free ones around. I've come to believe they are far superior to worm clamps long term. Gotta love that there are at least 12 radiator hoses......

The only thing that makes them really much nicer is slightly lowering (to M030 RW spec), aeroskirts, add grill after the bumper to avoid much leaves in it, bulletproof the M96 engine, renew some of the arms. But most importantly, enjoy the car. It's a nice early one.

Great video. i especially liked how you enjoyed driving the car at the end. After wanting to drive a 911 my whole life (I'm 72) I finally got to rent a 996 through Turo and drove it for a whole day. I wasn't particularly interested in how much power it had. I don't think I ever went above 4000 rpm. I just wanted to experience the steering weight and feedback and the handling. Believe me, I was not disappointed. I never drive a car that felt so planted to the pavement. It felt like you could not break that car loose even if you wanted to. I hope you really enjoy yours.

I have a C4S, love banging it through the gears. I left an E46 M3 behind, don't miss it after getting the 996. The 996 is a better performing car in every way, and yes its great stock. My only mod is factory ROW M030 springs and Koni's. Bad repairs are terrible to discover, and gratifying to get straightened out.
