I don’t think Americans realise how much and how quickly things are changing for the worse in European countries. It’s very frightening to barely recognise one’s own country anymore and the levels of violence and crime is off the charts. 😢 If you’re dreaming of coming to a European country then research carefully, the issues that blight the US also blight us here too.

As a born European, I don’t know about the rest of the world, but many of the points you brought up are currently also collapsing here. Healthcare, safety, affordability, social cohesion are all going down as we speak. There is a reason why far right parties gain ground recently. It’s all about delay and specific place. But there is no way you leave your kids to roam around in most Western Eu cities or get an MRI or a specialist appointment faster than a few months, in general.

In reality, most people feel like escaping the USA for another country which has it's own real issues. However, because it's novel, you're money stretches further, and it's not your country, people are ignorant to the very real problems it faces. It's this ignorance that creates a bubble for people to think it's paradise. Here are some of the issues that locals in Portugal are facing: A heavy reliance on a volatile tourism, high levels of emigration, concerns about political corruption, inadequate salaries, growing healthcare issues, and issues with racial discrimination and xenophobia, particularly impacting migrant communities. Sound familiar?

I fully agree with your video, but let's be honest, everyone needs a plan before leaving. You and Christina had a 10 year plan. You didn't just leave without having more than enough savings/investments to live well abroad. I am steadily progressing with my plan, and hope to be able to relocate very soon, but it will not be overnight. I think it's imperative to ALWAYS have a nest egg to fall back on and not just jump ship, without a solid plan.

@esg97585 сағат бұрын
Portugal is the most visa friendly. However, if you’re retired, you have many options as you’re not needing to find immediate employment where you settle, which isn’t possible visa wise right away. Check out this great couple and their channel Expats Everywhere (not affiliated just a fan) and they make great content on moving abroad. They have a video from maybe 2 months ago or 3 about moving abroad with a tax specialist and which ones are better for diff employment situations (retired vs passive income vs freelance/contract). Best of luck to you and your family finding a safe and secure place to settle. And thing is, once in Europe you can travel around and check out other options in case your first stop isn’t your favorite.

Healthcare cost is a real concern. Who do you get your healthcare coverage from and does it cover you when you visit the US? I want to leave abroad too, but expect to come back to the US for quite a bit
@esg97582 сағат бұрын
@@jokedog you will have diff policies. One that covers you in the country you move to, or it can cover you worldwide, except the US. You will have to buy a travel policy for when in the US. Our system is so convoluted and expensive that no world wide policy usually covers it, or it would be super expensive to continue a US policy when not here. But your monthly premiums abroad will be so much lower and then you’ll only need coverage for your time visiting the US (will prob cost as much as a year of premiums elsewhere)

It feels like *almost* every single point you mentioned is so much better in every other country because there are so many blockers in place to prevent just ANYONE from coming there. You have to have a visa, have to own a piece of property before you move there, have to have a job making x # of $'s.. many other high barriers to moving freely into other countries. However, in the US, we are WAYYY less strict about who we let into the US on VISA and don't have any of those types of requirements.
@esg97585 сағат бұрын
You don’t have to own property to move to a new country. A visa, yes, same with US. There are many diff types of visas with diff requirements. If you have a job offer visa for that, going to school visa for that, retired with own income visa for that, remote worker/contract worker visa for that and so on. It’s not impossible and there’s load of info on YT and elsewhere to learn how to make it work if you really want to go experience new cultures and ways of living. But please know, you do not have to own property first. Greece, Portugal, Spain are some of the more simple visas but other Eastern European countries too.
