Alpha Centauri is indeed one of the best games ever made. I loved the secret projects cutscenes. Still re-watch them regularly because they were so well made. Back when quality was prioritized over quantity. Most of the games nowadays just have nice graphics but zero content.

Greatest thing about Alpha Centauri is that scientific achievements are plausible, so much so that one of the first technologies you discover is the Human Genome, which was decoded a few years after the game.

Yes, the singular factions and overarching story woven into the mechanics of the game are great, but so are the quotes from philosophy, arts and sciences - real and fabrication - that accompany every major and minor achievement in the game, as well as the unit creator, base governors and diplomacy system. This game has charisma in spades.

undisputed, best Sid Meier game I've ever played and probably will ever play. 25 years later, I still play it and consider it superior to modern 4X games. I'm simply baffled that Firaxis has not developed a true follow up or remaster to this game. Every person I know who enjoys the 4X genre, loves Alpha Centauri and would absolutely be over the moon if they came out with a new one. I don't know what the the hell Firaxis is waiting for.

I love the terraforming, that forests can expand on their own, that players can design units according to individual systems techs, the extensive civic variations, that a stack of units doesn't all die when one does, the panoply of wonders, being able to play an alien faction..... Alpha Centauri is great.

it is still the best turnbased strategy game today. i loved terraforming, stealing precipitation from my enemies by building an mountain and so. the politics where great, the diplomacy felt realistic, special space projects where fun - just raise the sea level and drain your enemies. and the best. the story. i always tried to fully get rid of the fungus - just for fun. and i am still, after 25 years, playing it from time to time

I love Alpha Centauri game much more than any Civ games. Even more than Civ 3 & 4.

Two of the main features for me were the ability to customize units (if I'm not mistaken as it's been a while) and the diplomacy system (still better than CIV today). I always wishes for a new Alpha Centauri game, something that has all the original's features, but with something more in-depth.

Just soes you know, the political agendas and personalities can be randomized, and the faction editor can let you change and create new factions - so it's not nearly as narrative restrictive as you might think - rules can also be customized, pretty much the whole game can be changed in some way :D custom or random planets - for the factions the "restrictive bits" are the bonuses and negative to each faction which can't be changed without the faction editor :D

I played the demo of this on repeat, you only got X amount of turns in the demo, so i came very efficient in those turns allotted to me!

I have played this game every year since 1999, you're right, modern games just don't have the depth, and Brian Reynolds and Sid Meier's influence is sorely lacking in Beyond Earth

I'm sure there've been attempts. IMO BE wasn't a bad game, but it just had so much expectation put against it. I don't think they ever set out to make the next SMAC, but those comparisons are always going to be made.

i prefer turn based i just cant keep up managing doing all that stuff at the same time manage my army the ai is always faster with research and technology and im just there bulding my massive army to send it all out in one go only for it to get demolished

I think it's best to just play it as is at first - and it should be stable from GOG. If it's not, I'd recommend looking up Yitzi's Patch along with PRACX which helps with stability on modern machines. There are other unofficial patches that also work (Scient's and Kyrub's) but Yitzi's works best with PRACX afaik. From there there's mods to improve the AI (Thinker mod), GUI improvements and renderer from PlotinusRedux if PRACX doesn't work for you, and The Will to Power works to shake up to the game and redesign several aspects.

​@@WillisBorkeri got copy from GOG but it looks awful on modern TV, i want it to look like in here in this video. Got KKND from GOG and lowering resolution and running it in window mode makes it look and run lovely but i dont know how to do it with Alpha Centauri. Any tips?

@@mikes9753 simplest way without mods is to add a line to the config file called Alpha Centauri.ini located in local app data. Line you want to add is DirectDraw=0 That usually is enough to fix it. If you get stuck, Google 'alpha centauri high resolution gog' and there's a few useful forum threads on it (I can't post the link here - but should be able to find it pretty easy) Hope that helps!

Wish they would remaster this with modern UI Ive tried to play it and i love the stroy and setting but it just feels too much of a chore to play. I quite enjoyed beyond earth once it had rising tide attached at least

You definitely aren't alone in wanting that. I'd heard the creators are interested in doing something modern with the game - but it's in an awkward place. Last I read the IP is caught between 2 different publishers, so doing something with the game would be a nightmare.
