Pointless fact, but in some more modern Call of Duty's, Activision put fully playable versions of their Atari games, I think in Black Ops 3 (or 4) you need to do an easter egg on Nuketown in a private match and then the Nuketown sign turns into a games console, and on Black Ops Cold War, you can play them in the campaign, which then unlocks them to play anytime on the main menu.

I love the Atari 2600. It was the first retro system I actively started collecting for when I was 9 years old. Now being in my 20s, I love when people mention Atari and its games because it feels like not a lot of people appreciate the 2600 because of how old it is. Glad to see you shed some light on how fun the 2600 is even today!

I was always a nintendo guy but once i discovered that nintendo games did also appear on atari systems and that atari also used nintendo’s ip’s against them for advertising their game systems over that from nintendo, I also became a huge atari fan ever since. And since i discovered that the atari 2600 became expandible with chips and hardware programming tricks, i do possess 3 different region atari 2600 systems, but i do also possess other atari systems😁👍

Something I always appreciated about your videos, especially apparent in the "All Levels Ranked" ones, is that you constantly make a genuine effort to engage with more limited games for what they are, trying to get into the mindset that they were designed for, appreciate their ingenuity and having fun with them. This video has to be the perfect culmination of that attitude! I was smiling all the way through. Good vibes all around. I randomly got a 2600 some years ago and have to agree ET is not nearly as bad as some made it out to be, just pretty complicated. Sadly, it's the more ambitious games that tried to incorporate advanced mechanics that are the hardest to get into these days, even if you gotta respect them trying to create a unique experience for their time. In my opinion, at their best, 2600 games are the ones that take a simple concept but make it responsive and polished, those especially rise above their limitations to remain enjoyable to this day, just like Pong remains surprisingly addictive once you get into it, proving that creativity trumps technical power!

It is more important than ever to pay respects and learn form older videogames, even if you may not enjoy them today. Learning their importance, how they are made, and how they laid the foundations for what we have now, it all helps you better understand and appreciate games, and maybe even help you become a game designer. Thank you so much Jak for encouraging a new generation of people to not write off the past, and to appreciate the foundations of it all.

Well this certainly was an interesting retrospective type of review. I admit that I was never into the Atari as far as playing it and I always just had more of a passing acknowledgement for what it did for video games and I liked hearing people talk about the games so this was another nice one to add to that experience. I think what you said towards the end of not always wanting to play an epic game and having those days of preferring to play something simpler and less bloated is how I feel with my preference for playing PS1, N64, and certain PS2 games so I kinda get it haha. Anyway great vid!

So, I didn't grow up with this era of Atari. To me when I think of Atari I think of games like RollerCoaster Tycoon and all the random licenced games they used to do, like Taz Wanted and that one Terminator 3 game no one remembers. But I respect the hell out of what they did in the past, and the mistakes they made along the way. From the arcade days to the 2600, from the 5200 and 7800 to the ST, Lynx and Jaguar. They made some amazing stuff. And if you look deeper into their history, it's kinda insane. From being owned by Warner Bros to switching a whole chunk of staff with Commodore, they sure have had a legacy that we will never forget. Fantastic video Jak, keep the amazing work up as we reach closer to episode 200! Man, 10 years and almost 200 episodes, that's kinda crazy if you think about it for a silly little KZbin game review show.

I was a passionate Atari collector for a good few years, and as someone with not a lot of time to dedicate to video games right now, playing the games from this era lets me have a fun, engaging and extremely varied gaming experience every day. I can travel to space and alien planets in a million different flavors, explore an ever changing fantasy world in search of a great treasure, creep around a haunted mansion, defend a dying world from nuclear annihilation, and have countless other experiences, and when all is said and done, barely an hour has passed. And what an hour it was. Rediscovering my love of Atari with the Anniversary Collection, with its extensive timeline and little tidbits of classic media has given me more appreciation for an era of games I already loved. I just needed to be reminded of why I love it so much. :)

Great video as always, Jak. And I agree, I'm also in the party that good graphics dont mean a good game. All you really need is a good story and or gameplay. Call me weird but I always enjoyed the primitive graphics of older games, as it leaves more to the imagination of what is actually there in front of you. And I'm proud to say that I still enjoy some old Atari titles from time to time. My go is either Galaga and Dig Dug and various titles along with that. I rememeber my introduction to them, it was the Namco Museum 50th Anniversary on the PS2. I now have the OG XBOX version and I still enjoy playing it. Keep up the great work, Jak.

I like going back to simpler times because i get bored of games like Call of Duty that are all budget and zero fun. The simple but addicting games on the 2600 are the opposite of that. although it's kinda disappointing that the score in Atari Asteroids can roll back over to 0. I wish it just climbed and climbed and I could see how far i could go.

There really isn't a whole lot of reason to go back and play 2600 games. They're far too simple these days. You can get better games from phone apps. I owned a 2600 in the early 2000s, when I was around 11 years old. It was fun for a bit. But there just isn't anything to keep you playing it these days. Just very basic highscore games really.

ET is terrible. I'm not trying to crap on you, please don't take this personal. But I want you to know how much hatred young me had of this game 41 years ago. Every new video says it isn't so bad. I think this is because the creator gave interviews. I think it is because people see the tech compared to other games and don't understand how terrible it plays compared to average action games. I swear I haven't seen a video in years where somebody didn't reveal that it wasn't so bad or didn't get a fair shake. This game was awful by our standards then. ET falls down hole. ET extends neck. It was boring and even more it was frustrating. People in videos can tell me now that you know how not to fall down every hole. Back then, we did not know and we kept falling and extending and wasting time that could be spent on anything else. Even if you did not fall down a hole, the game contained none of the action a video game was supposed to have. The options were do nothing or do something boring. Have you seen the movie ET? In the movie, does he keep falling down holes? Does he have massive neck extension which causes him to fly? Even by Atari standards this was nonsense. I feel like the modern gamer thinks very little of us if they think this was fine. I know it's that you weren't there.
