Yup! I wear a lot of affordable clothes but it’s all about quality and craftsmanship. In my 20s I splurged on Burberry trench coats, Max Mara wool coats, YSL Chanel Prada purses, etc. Guess what? I gained weight and could no longer fit into my designer clothes. And I got sick of 2 of my purses and I totally thought I was making smart choices (aka nothing too trendy but not necessarily a classic). The resale value wasn’t great for these items. Now I opt for cashmere from Uniqlo, Zara, H&M (when they have it online), J.crew, and Cos. And get my shoes from the designer section at Nordstrom Rack or The RealReal (if you don’t mind used shoes). And I focus on less expensive bags like Furla, Cuyana, APC, etc. I still have several designer items: Gucci wool scarf, LV silk scarf, Chanel purse (my 1st luxury item, I’ll never sell it), Ferragamo pumps, Cartier bracelet, etc. It’s nice to have a few luxury pieces, but my wallet appreciates me spending less but still getting nice things. And lately I’m trying to support smaller brands and indie designers. Edit to add: I never pay full price if I don’t have to. Cashmere sweaters are basically half off after the holidays. And some luxury brands appear on discount like Saks Off 5th, etc. I mean, Sophie is always talking about online discounts. :) And if you don’t mind vintage or secondhand, it’s definitely cheaper.

@@SL-lz9jr totally agree with you. Merino Wool sweaters and Cashmere yes they’re on sale like right now. I bought my husband some from Zara and GAP Merino Wool $17 and Cashmere $19. Coach handbags I swear on their quality even if you buy them from the outlet store. You can score a 100% leather handbag or wallet 70% off plus extra 15% off.

I don’t mean comfortable as in lounge wear. I mean that I didn’t feel any tension with. Then I looked at things, good things. 5hat I avoided wearing and I tried to decide what it was that I didn’t like. When I realized I didn’t like ornate things I stopped buying them. Sophie you've inspired my love for intelligent, well thought out fashion. For a couple of years now I've adopted the work wardrobe strategy of buying 5 tops (Lily Dilk blouses and cotton button up shirts) and 5 pairs of quality high street trousers (Reiss) that I wear for work during the week that I'll mix and match, plus a mid range 100% leather work bag. Men tend to wear the same or similar coloured suits with different shirts and I thought I'd try the same. Such a time and money saver! This has allowed me spend money on luxuries like holidays, classic handbags, 18 carat gold heirloom jewellery pieces and staple designer shoes. Also the odd designer piece of clothing on the outnet like a 70% off Stella McCartney wool coat.

A good tailor is a great help in saving money by buying classic non designer clothing (especially jackets and coats) and having it altered to fit better. As well as quality fabric, in fact, I think, even more than that, many designer jackets - Stella McCartney and Victoria Beckham are good eggs - are that little bit more tailors in sleeves and waists, than high street.

This is a nice video! Sophie, can you make a separate content that talks about the quality and how to care your bags and clothes? Like, how do you keep them in top shape and avoid scratches/dirt, how do you store them (fold, hang, or in a box?), etc. There was one video long time ago where you mention about the leather quality of a bag and it was *so interesting to me* because in a million years I wouldn't have paid any attention to the leather on the bottom of my bag (I'm the type who uses things I have until it broke). when it comes to shoes custom leather is the way to go! Once you find a good shoemaker they will last you for decades (also you can get them repaird seamlessly and you can design them yourselfe) and will be so comfortable no matter how high the heel is. This way you are supporting small local businesses/craftsmen as well. You are likely to pay less than designer shoes and get a better fit for your foot!

In this video, I was at awe with the elaborated design of the 3D card 😍 and that bunny 🐰 did I hear it right, it's a mini wind chime? Adorable!

Yes!! What a fantastic video!! Right now my financial priorities mean luxury purchases are on the back burner, but your advice is GREAT for making more mindful purchases, regardless of one’s budget. Also, your mail time is the best!! ❤️

Actually fun fact about the Gucci Marmont double G design, it was first released in the 70s for a very limited run, and Alessandro Michele brought it back for the 2016 yeah as an ode to Gucci’s past and reinventing the brand! So it is definetly a classic style, whether it comes in and out of production or not!

Hey Sophie, would you mind doing a video on high quality non-designer essentials?

Bonjour Sophie, I really appreciate this content, it’s come at the best time as I’m looking at my wardrobe (always do a big cleanup in Jan) and contemplating what I need this year. I’ve always been a classic but somehow over the last years I’ve wandered and spent far to much on fast fashion... that’s the thing with this style... your happy in the moment but then tire of it and move on to the next best thing (well it is for me) I’m going back to what I really like. Thank you so much Sophie, you’ve inspired me today xoxo

Sophie I totally agree with you... I have a Gucci belt and Versace Medusa belt, and I think they really punch up my non-designer outfits like AllSaints or TopMan... for men’s non designer leather shoes, I *love* TOO BOOT NEW YORK. I love them so much I even had a pair resoled 😂 But for Christmas I did get the Jordaan Gucci loafers, and although I admit I’m a few years behind that trend, the quality is so high that I know I will love them for years to come, and the style feels so classic I don’t think they’ll be as trendy as my belt. Anyway, love you and appreciate you! 🥰💕

I’m going to say decent leather heels I use LK Bennett. Oldest pair I own still going strong are now 8-9 years old. Also have to say knowing you spend time to read and reply just shows how lovely and real you are ❤️ I feel so bad I’ve fallen behind on my replies to pen friends

Absolutely agree, you don’t need many items to look expensive! But I actually prefer the new Dior logo belt as it’s more subtle, almost looks like an infinity sign. 😊 On shoes, while I looove Gianvito Rossi, I rarely buy them because shoes get so easily scuffed. My go-to brand for shoes is Sam Edelman.

Why do people think that closets were so small years ago. Closets the size of small homes is what people aspire to place their over priced clothing in. Thank you for sharing ideas of how to not live in excess but in quality.

This is my new philosophy. 1, not necessarily designer, but the best quality I can afford. Items I can use often. Or it’s a waste.

Sophie, can you please do a video for the Wolford products you own? Especially if they run true to size, using them as basics or support, and long term wear?
@SoAnesu4 жыл бұрын
One of my favourite brands! Can’t recommend them enough. Yes they do run true to size. Have all their classic body suits and I’ve been buying the brand for over 20 years. Everything I’ve bought is bulletproof, no bobbling or torn seams provided you take care of the stuff - need I say more 🤦🏾♀️🤷🏾♀️

You can also check fashion magazines from countries with low average salaries ... most show you how to pull off expensive look with 100% of dupes from budget chains ;)

I prefer your Christmas Dior belt buckle, it may be new and not be around forever, but the design is perfect! Symmetrical and subtle, I just wish they did larger sizes like Gucci do. OMG the pebble bunnies are so adorable! Very creative, and such a thoughtful gift! 🐰🐰
