Yup! I wear a lot of affordable clothes but it’s all about quality and craftsmanship. In my 20s I splurged on Burberry trench coats, Max Mara wool coats, YSL Chanel Prada purses, etc. Guess what? I gained weight and could no longer fit into my designer clothes. And I got sick of 2 of my purses and I totally thought I was making smart choices (aka nothing too trendy but not necessarily a classic). The resale value wasn’t great for these items. Now I opt for cashmere from Uniqlo, Zara, H&M (when they have it online), J.crew, and Cos. And get my shoes from the designer section at Nordstrom Rack or The RealReal (if you don’t mind used shoes). And I focus on less expensive bags like Furla, Cuyana, APC, etc. I still have several designer items: Gucci wool scarf, LV silk scarf, Chanel purse (my 1st luxury item, I’ll never sell it), Ferragamo pumps, Cartier bracelet, etc. It’s nice to have a few luxury pieces, but my wallet appreciates me spending less but still getting nice things. And lately I’m trying to support smaller brands and indie designers. Edit to add: I never pay full price if I don’t have to. Cashmere sweaters are basically half off after the holidays. And some luxury brands appear on discount like Saks Off 5th, etc. I mean, Sophie is always talking about online discounts. :) And if you don’t mind vintage or secondhand, it’s definitely cheaper.
@meceecee3 жыл бұрын
@@SL-lz9jr totally agree with you. Merino Wool sweaters and Cashmere yes they’re on sale like right now. I bought my husband some from Zara and GAP Merino Wool $17 and Cashmere $19. Coach handbags I swear on their quality even if you buy them from the outlet store. You can score a 100% leather handbag or wallet 70% off plus extra 15% off.

Sophie you've inspired my love for intelligent, well thought out fashion. For a couple of years now I've adopted the work wardrobe strategy of buying 5 tops (Lily Dilk blouses and cotton button up shirts) and 5 pairs of quality high street trousers (Reiss) that I wear for work during the week that I'll mix and match, plus a mid range 100% leather work bag. Men tend to wear the same or similar coloured suits with different shirts and I thought I'd try the same. Such a time and money saver! This has allowed me spend money on luxuries like holidays, classic handbags, 18 carat gold heirloom jewellery pieces and staple designer shoes. Also the odd designer piece of clothing on the outnet like a 70% off Stella McCartney wool coat.

For everyday wear, what I did many years ago, was try things on in my wardrobe and if I felt super comfortable in the style or the color I put those clothes aside and tried to buy things from then on that ai felt super comfortable in. I don’t mean comfortable as in lounge wear. I mean that I didn’t feel any tension with. Then I looked at things, good things. 5hat I avoided wearing and I tried to decide what it was that I didn’t like. When I realized I didn’t like ornate things I stopped buying them. Lastly was my attention to color. I realized I do t like much color, I love black, beige, cream, white.......pale pastels in summer

Agreed! Thank you for being so reasonable and practical. I'm not into designer clothes to have a designer and don't like grabbing anything that has a name splashed across it. But if it's used and made well with good fabric, particularly natural fibers, I'll pick up a designer piece if it fits my style and I can wear it with many different outfits. Also, getting clothes altered to fit can source up your clothes and make them look way more expensive! Classy and and developing taste isn't just about large sums of money!

This was some really good advice. I’m trying to create a more timeless wardrobe filled with good quality items that I love rather than a whole bunch of fast fashion( which is more expensive in the long run when you think about). I prefer your Christmas Dior belt buckle, it may be new and not be around forever, but the design is perfect! Symmetrical and subtle, I just wish they did larger sizes like Gucci do. OMG the pebble bunnies are so adorable! Very creative, and such a thoughtful gift! 🐰🐰

I enjoyed this video. I agree with your perspectives on buying luxury. You not only provide great styling advice, you also provide practical advice that can help any woman who desires to build a quality wardrobe without spending a fortune. What I like most about you is your humility. You’re not snobbish about fashion and you’re relatable. You’re providing great content for a woman of any background. Really appreciate you. Keep up the great work.

I’ve held off buying new clothes since I gutted my wardrobe, now I’ve got ideas of what to replace everything with 😂 I’ve always loved that Stella coat just never bit the bullet and brought it! I might now though 😍 thanks Sophie x

I like the 30 Montaigne belt so much more than the saddle belt. The font for the saddle is not special at all, but 30 Montaigne shape makes it look so classy, not just looking like a letter logo. Personally I think 30 Montaigne is here to stay.

I know Sophie replied already but I sell luxury clothing on eBay for clients and a lot of that depends on the individual and how they wear things. Some of my friends absolutely just bang up everything they own (I never let them borrow anything too precious). They just throw their coats and bags and shoes and don’t seem to care what happens. I on the other hand am more careful. I try not to rub up against another person. I rarely lean against surfaces: walls or doors. I sit where it looks clean. I’m careful not to wear purses that will rub up against the cloth of my sweaters or coats and have it result in pills or stains. I don’t baby my clothes. I do wear them. They are clothes after all. I will say that cheaper quality items do just wear down faster than higher quality items. And expensive does not equal high quality. Some materials just don’t wear well with time. There’s good and bad wool or cashmere. How it’s woven or knitted matters. Generally anything of substance should be fine. It’s the thinner and less weighty fibers that you have to worry about. Long story short, it you’re not the clumsy sort who isn’t paying attention to their surroundings, your luxury pieces should be fine. I’ve had my Max Mara wool coat for years now and I only dry clean it every few months. And it’s only lately starting to pill from where I mistakenly carried a canvas tote bag (when the fibers rub against one another the tension creates pills). Watch out for dark suede purses against light colored wool, there will be color transfer. Smooth leather bags are best. No color transfer or rubbing of the fibers on the coat. :)

A cool capsule wardrobe hack is the Chanel basic belt and Hermes belt leathers are interchangeable - you can buy a Chanel in silver hardware with a reversible black and white leather and purchase a Hermes Constance 32mm with gold hardware and maybe etoupe and blue combo and there you will have essentially 8 potential belt combinations in both silver and gold hardware from 2 luxury houses :-)

This is a nice video! Sophie, can you make a separate content that talks about the quality and how to care your bags and clothes? Like, how do you keep them in top shape and avoid scratches/dirt, how do you store them (fold, hang, or in a box?), etc. There was one video long time ago where you mention about the leather quality of a bag and it was *so interesting to me* because in a million years I wouldn't have paid any attention to the leather on the bottom of my bag (I'm the type who uses things I have until it broke). I thought you'd be the right person to ask about such things, I hope you don't mind :)

I love the mail videos! Maybe you could do a dedicated mail video when you have enough mail? Then the people who don't like mail would not need to watch it? Guessing that it would be easier to edit than a standard video. Thank you for the video!

Love this video!! I have to admit that I do am guilty for amassing a huge amount of fashion items but this video really helps me to think about what the best items in my wardrobe are!! Love your videos! I am following you since the Balmain Blazer video and I love watching you ever since! I am also soo happy how much your channel grew since that because you truly are one of the most genuine people on youtube!! Lots of love!!

Sophie I totally agree with you... I have a Gucci belt and Versace Medusa belt, and I think they really punch up my non-designer outfits like AllSaints or TopMan... for men’s non designer leather shoes, I *love* TOO BOOT NEW YORK. I love them so much I even had a pair resoled 😂 But for Christmas I did get the Jordaan Gucci loafers, and although I admit I’m a few years behind that trend, the quality is so high that I know I will love them for years to come, and the style feels so classic I don’t think they’ll be as trendy as my belt. Anyway, love you and appreciate you! 🥰💕

concerning non designer brands or even fast fashion, I would advise paying attention to the 4 F’s: fabric, fitting, finishing and fine print/pattern. And with designer brands, to not mix different logos from different brands (a huge faux pas here in São Paulo)
