In this video, I argue that sleep-breathing problems such as obstructive sleep apnea and upper airway resistance syndrome should be the first reason to think about when you suffer from this nighttime urination. Nocturia (nighttime urination) is a widespread condition as you get older, but it’s also common in children as well as younger adults. There are many explanations for nocturia by experts, but obstructive sleep apnea is rarely mentioned. I also explain which hormone from the heart is made due to apneas to make you pee more at night, as well as frightening statistics on much higher death rates for people with nocturia.

Here's a study showing that in patients with sleep apnea and nighttime urination, 79% of awakenings at night were due to obstructed breathing, rather than from a distended bladder. jamanetwork.com/journals/jamainternalmedicine/article-abstract/621682.

I have sleep apnea and also have nighttime urination. Is it possible that my bladder is more susceptible to being irritated by what I eat and drink? I'm asking, if my bladder can be irritated by foods and drink because of sleep apnea?
@222Lightning
@222Lightning 9 ай бұрын
@@Curtis_George I'm no expert but I'm pretty sure I came to understand from a Dr. Berg video that "what and when" you eat can affect your insulin at night and an insulin problem can cause or make Sleep Apnea worse. Eating too much salty foods or alcohol irritates the bladder. I like beer a lot....I definitely notice that if I drink 2-3 beers even if its in the first half of the day...my Nocturia is worse that night. I'd recommend trying to make your dinner a spinach salad w Garbanzo beans (my new favorite) or pan fried broccoli w olive oil. You will definitely feel that your bladder feels good and not get up at night as much. I'm not telling you to go vegan... I personally can't do this.....just go vegan for dinner. Try it.....see if it it makes a difference. Also try not to eat or drink 2-3 hours before bed...and not snack in the middle of the night. Eat enough also.........regardless if you skip breakfast or not. I usually skip breakfast myself. If you have obstructive sleep apnea....your solution is getting diagnosed then get one of those machines I would think. Drink lemon water also. This definitely good for the bladder.

I am çoeliac and as my health deteriorated I woke more during the night. This condition is a killer and yet it was not mentioned in your ten minute informative talk. Many of the problems it causes are in the list you gave us. Please add coeliac disease to your list and encourage people to get tested before serious damage is done. I was sixty two and unable to digest anything properly before I found a diagnostic program that gave me possible things to test for, yet for years I had been visiting my GP with gastric problems and worsening symtoms, high blood pressure heart palpitations alongside weakness and tiredness. The tendency is to treat one symptom instead of looking for an underlying cause. I was told for years that I had irritable bowel syndrome. This is not a diagnosis but a description of what was happening to me from an irritant that ruined my life.

I was diagnosed with BPH at an early age. Despite that, I continued drinking large amounts of caffeine throughout the day. This, in turn, caused frequent urination during the night. Most nights, I would have to get up five times to urinate. I made a switch to drinking one cup of coffee in the morning, followed by one cup of matcha tea. After that, I only drink water. In addition, I keep a bottle of water on my nightstand. Since making the change, I rarely get up to urinate at night. If I do, it is only once and I fall right back to sleep. It has been life-changing.

A couple of years ago I went to a sleep clinic and had an overnight test. I had sleep apnea. They recommended a C-pap machine. THE first night I noticed that I only got up once or twice a night to pee. No one at the clinic mentioned that this may happen. I had been getting up 4-6 times a night. It was a nice surprise, and SO noticeable that I immediately recognized the connection. I then asked my doctor and he said that, yes, there is a connection.

Thank you Dr Park. I'm a retired but active, 75 year old New Zealander and have been having nocturia for about 10 years. I have had high blood pressure for about 18 years, but I have been listed as marginal all my adult life. Bedtime is usually 10.30-11pm and I wake for a full pee around 12.30pm. I then wake 90 minutes later at 2.00am for an extra dribble. The next one is usually at 4am and a final one at 6.00am, both of these are annoying dribbles that keep you half-awake if you don't see to it. I have slept right through on occasions when I have had a hard day's exercise and/or a super comfortable bed at a hotel/motel. But sleep apnea seems a high probability. Thank you.

your kids must visit an orthodentist specialized in airway too (not a normal one, some orthos like teeth extractions which is theorized to be linked to sleep problems when adult). You gotta be kidding me. My body has been in use for 68 years and what I have done to the outside does not bear thinking about but what I have put into it over those years has given me some wonderful times. It stands to reason with that amount of abuse somethings are not going to work as they once did. After several visits to my doctors and specialists over the past 10 years or so I have come to the conclusion I just don't care any more. I am going to go out as I want to enjoying what I want to and if she don't like it tough luck. If I need to go twice a night so be it. If I got to go more that means my bladder is working. It's not worth the hassle going to a doctor every 5 minutes to find out why so and so is not working. I have had a marvellous life so far and what is happening now is okay.

@@doctorstevenpark Thanks. I had a leaky heart valve, which I reckon was caused by Sleep Apnea in the first place, so it all goes round in circles, I suppose. My father too suffered from Sleep Apnea and had to sleep with a mask next to a machine of some kind. Unfortunately it only worsened his condition in the long run. I avoided that thanks to emplolying the Butayko Method for breathing etc., particularly the principle of taping one's mouth over with surgical tape at night. If you are not aware of this solution to Sleep Apnea, I will strongly encourage you to look into it. Some medical professionals have their doubts about it (though Butayko, who invented it, was in fact a high-ranking doctor himself), and one night when I was at hospital there was a nurse who woke me up and told me to remove the tape. Luckily for me, she had a young doctor with her, who said, "No, no, no, this is a great thing to do." He had some personal, very positive experience with the method and even tossed me a roll of surgical tape when he left (the nurse had to accept his decition, of course). I still mouthtape at night, but I do have a small worry in regard to the glue on the tape and whether it might be somewhat toxid, as you place it across the lips. I know there are dedicated tapes made for this specific purpose, but I can't find the brands around where I live (South West Ireland), and the sellers I found on German Amazon, who stock them, won't post out of their own country, and buying from amazon.co.uk. isn't worth the trouble since Brexit. To cut a long story short, I wonder if you might have a comment on the subject of the possible toxidity of the tape.

Thank you! It's amazing how sleep apnea is ignored by doctors both in diagnosis and after. I have severe untreatable sleep apnea and they act like it's a bummer I'll eventually get used to and stop complaining about it. 😂

THANK YOU - I have gone the whole gambit with 3 procedures and 4 Urologist and then was put on Elavil. He then said to have a sleep study which showed I did not have sleep apnea. When I got the results to my GP the said it was insomnia and he had a pill for that. I call the clinic to see if I could see the results she said on the phone I need the $4000.00 sleep test to validate what you have described to me here. Thank you so much.

I used to wake up an average of three times a night just to urinate, I would later be diagnosed with severe sleep apnea and was prescribed the top of the line cpap machine. I've been using this machine for almost a year now and boy has it changed my life for the better. Not knowing that my sleep apnea had any correlation to my frequent washroom breaks at night but after watching this video, it made me realize ever since I started using the cpap machine those washroom breaks at night had stopped completely where now when I need to urinate, its only once after a nights rest and woke ready to start my day.

Thank you, very helpful. I'm going to check for sleep apnea with an oximeter.
@doctorstevenpark
@doctorstevenpark 3 ай бұрын
Great to hear. An oximeter is a good first step, but you can stop breathing multiple times every hour and still test negative for sleep apnea. It's because the sleep test only counts episodes lasting more than 10 seconds, so your oxygen levels don't drop too much. Even then, you can still make atrial natriuretic peptide, which creates more urine than usual while you sleep. This is called upper airway resistance syndrome (UARS). I have other videos on UARS.

I just have a tendency to drink most of my water towards the end of the day. I usually sip coffee up until my first meal around noon. I don't mind waking up several times to go to the bathroom. And I always allocate 9+ hours for bedtime which means I easily get 8+ hours of sleep. I feel great and I'm not overweight.

Check this out... The main reason is most of us 40 or older guys take night time pills and if you're like me and don't like to feel my pills coming up i drink a full glass of water and yes it wakes me up a couple hours later. I hate when doctors think they know everything and then think You Tube is so creditable that they make videos. I'm just a lowly Engineer with a masters in Mechanical and Robotic Engineering from Stanford, and have to double check and correct my VA doctors so frequently specially on medication prescribing i should be working there. I think sleep apnea is a bad thing, but i think hooking someone up to a machine that, is a germ cooker and as recently shown could cause cancer or makes you have nightmares because you face is being smothered in a grip or bunging cords and plastic. doesn't make sleep any better, just worse.

My Oura ring shows fragmented sleep and the sleep cycle app records my snoring & strangulated breathing. I wake up 2-3 times to pee, though I also drink too many liquids. I have self-diagnosed UARS which I attribute to menopause + hypermobility (lax tissues). Working at it by correcting my oral posture (back of the tongue on the palate) and doing exercises to tone and expand the upper airway. I’m convinced I can resolve this and prevent full-blown OSA. Appreciate your channel!

Well I have been feelling terrible for the last two years. Finally went to doc. I have sleep apnea stop breathing 38 times a minute. So its pretty bad. I'm a thick man but about 50 lbs heavier than in my teens. Same up two or three times a night to hit bathroom. I have the machine but its tough it drys my mouth out so bad I get up to drink the same as hitting the bath and i mean i'm dry to the point my lips stick closed. I now have high BP also at times in the range of 202 / 180 emergency I was told but then when my stress is down it goes down to 129 / 78 which the doc is surprised at. So on the path to drop weight cause the apnea seems to be destroying everything this one problem is causing six others. Thanks for the info Doc I hope if i drop 50Lbs it will at least not be as bad as it is maybe just some snoring. I'll check back on new videos but I think your on to it for me. As there are times I sleep good and the next day I feel like im 20 again. Its like a crappy roller coaster I don't want to ride. Thanks Tony

Poor kidney health both impact wellbeing. I went from reasonable sleep to around 12 yrs of approx 2/3 hrs sleep at night (at most). This didn't help my mental health and w.c. trips averaged 3-5 in this period. I now average 1 or no visits, but I eat early then have a late brunch, so theres the reason for the 'one' time. For me the problem is more about foods I'm sensitive to which want to come out! The good side is more sleep, improved mind & body! NB: food sensitivity is a major cause of inflammation. In turn leading to sinus issues or apnoea! Very thoughtful video!

I am a 71 year old slender woman who exercises and I have mandibular devices to open my jaw to help my sleep apnea. I started waking up every two hours to pee at night when I went through 10 years of chemo induced hot flashes from breast cancer treatment. That started 21 years ago. I continue to wake up every two hours no matter what I do. I wish that what you said worked for me but it doesn’t.
@doctorstevenpark

Vivian, just because you tried a mandibular advancement device doesn't mean that your urination is not a sleep apnea problem. Oftentimes, I see complete obstruction in the airway with the oral device in place. I find that in many cases, it's not pushed forward enough. The problem is that you get more complications the further out you push. This issues has to be managed properly by your dentist. Another option is to try other sleep apnea treatment alternatives. Talk with your sleep doctor. Good luck!

Reluctantly, I have started using a CPAP machine. I now have 9 consecutive nights of fairly successful use according to how I feel in the mornings, and from the feedback on my phone app which is connected to my machine. Prior to using the CPAP machine, I would get up 2 to 4 a night to urinate over the past 7 years. I now get up 0 to 1 time a night to urinate since using the machine. I have been on prostate medication for about one year now and have seen no real positive results from the taking of this medication. I am amazed, that the CPAP machine has had this positive affect on my nocturia. I'm very excited to see what other positive results will come from using this machine!!!!! What abuse my body has taken from Central Sleep Apnea!!! I should have started using this machine years ago!!!
