How can you complain about the engine being too weak when you literally have the option of choosing a more powerful 330i, 330E or 330D? Also this is a fuel efficient 2L petrol which does 0-60 in 7 seconds, that's better than most cars on the road and you would have no issues overtaking upto 70mph........ Also the diesel feels quicker doesn't mean it will overtake any better, the 0-60 is basically the same, how is this a valid point in terms of function?

Just 2 points on your review. when you say the 320i just didn't have enough power when overtaking, what Driving Mode and Gearbox mode was the car in? you really need to have the gearbox in the S (SPORT) selected if driving in Comfort Mode, or have one of 3 the actual Sport Mode settings selected, that will automatically configure the gearbox for you and in Sport Individual Mode you can configure that setting further via the IDrive. I'm sure you will find acceleration you want if you have the car set up correctly. I've driven the new 3 Series 320i for a few months now and think it has awesome power when needed. I admit there are faster cars but the 320i will have all the power you need for everyday driving.2nd Point. The last 3 Series (F30) wasn't great car in build quality very cheap plastics and lots of rattles and squeaks in them. The biggest issues with the 320D version was the N47 engine that was fitted to in them. It has a known issue with the timing chain and tensioner failing resulting in very expensive repairs if the car has no warranty with a main dealer.I would suggest people who want the new 3 Series go and have alook at them, rent one out for a few days with all the tech fitted now you will see a massive improvement in quality and I feel buying an F30 is a big backwards step.

flyboy747 uk although you are correct when pointing out that sport mode setting is needed for better performance, every day driver use comfort mode all time. Sometimes when you need a bit extra do not have time to find the button and select the sport driving mode. What i do find quicker is to shift the gear selector to S (sport) and the car awakes and give that little "extra" by extending rpms.

R C I can assure you it wasn’t, I had a brand new 320D 12 plate and had to have timing chain work done at 11,000 miles which is a massive job on the N47engine. Out of warranty repair at a dealership would cost at lest £2000 back then as it’s a weeks work whole engine has to be taken out. Whilst mine was being repaired there was another 12 plate sat next to it having the same work done. So not ranting at all just telling you how it really is.

M sport trim is merely cosmetic upgrades over the sport and SE versions; exterior styling on lower front and rear bumpers, side skirts, larger alloys, sports seats with leather as standard, and M steering wheel and door sills.

You can't really compare a clatter clatter tractor engine with a silky smooth petrol. 330i seems to be the sweet spot. Much more performance for only slightly more money, virtually identical running costs to the 320i.

Odd. My 120i (same b48 engine) redlines at 6,800RPM. It does run out of puff at 5k or so, as it is held back by the factory mapping, which forces a throttle closure at 5k +, irrespective of pedal position. That is partly how they differentiate between the 320i and 330i; the latter is certainly the one to go for if you are kind of person who even thinks about where their redline is...

Its built on the 5 series architecture it is stiffer, faster, better suspension. It is bigger, lower centre of gravity. It is quiet and yes a perfect drive which like the 4 series makes it feel a bit boring and detached from the driver. If you are testing M cars it will feel boring. The new 330E is very good while it has the electric boost. If you want to feel the driving experience the M135i but that also has less driver feel than the 140i or the 240i which they have stopped making as it was faster than the M2 by mistake.(They corrected that issue after 12months)

Great vid. 👍 You’re right in everything being subjective. I’m on the other side. I’ve always shied away from the 3 Series because of the looks. However, when in the dealer having my car serviced, I had a good look around a 320i Sport and fell in love. So much so that as soon as possible, I am ordering a Touring in Black. Finally, BMW have realised that us petrolheads love twin exhausts. I bet they are selling more Sport’s now because of it. Who needs an MSport when these look this good? Added to this that I’m hearing elsewhere that it feels more refined and it sealed the deal for me. 🤣😂 I’ve heard others say it feels 5 Series’ish and I can now have that but a shrink wrapped version. Keep up the good work 👍👍

They were once the "Ultimate Driving Machine" and always lived up to that, especially the 3 series. Now the Alfa Giulia is absolutely telepathic in its driving experience. Reminds one of older BMWs. New ones are great but they've lost that edge. It's like they are a typical German knife, whereas the Alfa is Japanese steel, much sharper edge and more delicate driving. Sad that's this has happened. But once BMW went to AWD and even FWD from all RWD they've lost their touch.

Interesting point, perhaps the Alpha is worth a test drive. The Veloce is a particularly nice output, looks to be the sweet spot in the range, a bit quicker than a 330i, by a smidge.

@@Fhrivneoauf def worth a drive! Not sure where you are but in Oz we have 3 models, each with more power. The Veloce here is pretty cheap as well, and def has more pull than the 330i. Have a GTAm ordered, with no change from $300k but worth ever cent....will keep it until I die.

Idiotic review. Last car was fantastic, this one has been refined and slightly improved in all areas, and now it's "too good". Yep - it needs the higher powered 2.0 engine, yes, the 330 should come with X-Drive (which is why I wouldn't buy one) but I find it hard to believe you rather than the almost unanimous acclamation elsewhere. Oh, and the M-Sport only comes in 3 colours. Pathetic.

North Wales - That's very close to HubNut country! Pretty much the polar opposite to your car history, but equally watchable. Both of you always have something thoughtful and interesting to say about cars. HubNut in an M4 and Fezza in a 2CV would have been a great crossover / colab ;) Spot on with your observations on the 320i. This seems to be the fate of all medium sized cars right now. Impersonal, bland, characterless. Utterly efficient and competent, evolved into the John Major of transport. With the move to hybrids I suspect it may well get even worse. Being an X-Drive (4WD) version wouldn't have helped the power delivery but 180bhp really should feel better than that. Glad you enjoyed our 16C of damp overcast weather ;)

Talkin about the exterior design Sir..... (1)That 320i has just entry level rims & no M Sport kit... (2)If you add the M sport rims, spoiler, grille & a bit of side skirts, that car looks drop dead gorgeous! (3)The F30 design is aging now...been around for like 9 years or somethin.....but with it's M performance kit, it because a nowadays car........The G20 is such a beauty, inside-out.....Simplicity at its best.

I don't know what an "Infiniti" is and the only Hyundai in that size or class - the i40 - has been discontinued in Europe and several other markets. If you could tailor the commentary to relevant markets where the 320i is sold (which does not include North America obvs) that would be better still.
