I´m 46. Started running at 45, so an year ago. It´s hard. But those 60+ running 5k below 20 minutes inspires me.

The six points list could be used for any training program at any age. 🙂 Not doing speed work and just slower distance is probably the most common mistake that older runners do. At 56 I realized that I had to get back to consistancy with the speed work. My 10 k times are now going down again @ 7 runs incl 2 threshold + 1 tough 40-50s hill (+ 5 swims) per week. (training week, not race week)

This really resonated with me in so many ways. I especially like being realistic about what your fitness level is right now so that you can set realistic goals. Thanks for sharing! 👍

I decided to be at my prime at 50. I could never be better than I was back then, but I can have a better over all physique and work smarter. I have a goal to run 10K in sub 40 minutes. Also I have an ambition to work on muscles I never focused on when I was younger. My rest heart rate is currently 45. I can also feel a slow improvement when it comes to strength and agility. So keep on going, folks.

What about people under 50? Do the same tips apply? How can I run faster each week? I train 3 times per week, with a quality workout, a recovery workout and a distance workout.

If we lose muscle mass as we age, I assume that also includes heart muscle mass? So how do we "older" runners strength-train the heart muscles, like other muscles in our body? Or is that even possible ? Or does running at an older age place more strain on one's heart, thus the possibility of a heart attack increases ? Thank you (btw, I know you are not doctors, just asking your opinion :-)

I believe that over 50 runners are his primary focus. Agreed that it should probably say that in the title.
