An interesting fact about nitrous: it isn't exactly modern. The Germans were using it already in WW2 in their piston engined aircraft, under the name _Göring Mischung 1_ (GM-1), to increase the performance at high altitudes, where oxygen becomes scarce and the engine's power drops. Though, the stress on the engine was so high, it needed to be completely inspected after every use. P.S. You should totally make a "Boost Creeps" shirt with supercharger rotors, for the Roots and twin screw blower crew.

While Nissan makes some questionable transmissions, mainly CVTs, they do make a mean engine. In my 4 years I spent as a Nissan technician, we only had one bad engine, and it was on a Micra that was knocking from the second it rolled off the delivery truck. Besides that, I never had to change a bad one. That also includes my whole 16 year career where I spent a lot of it in an independent shop. Also, only ever had to change one Titan transmission which failed after 300k kms, and a few Frontier transmissions which all were caused by the known issue where the ATF cooler in the radiator bursts, sending coolant into the transmission, and ATF into the cooling system. Only had one Frontier transmission fail for other reasons. Lots of rear axles though. I've heard of a few 350z engine failures but those were caused by either poor tuning, or relentless abuse. I did have an 06 Altima that I got from my dad, it had around 325k kms on it when I got it. That was the last year they were offered with an actual automatic transmission, though you could get them with a manual or a CVT. Mine had the auto. I beat the everliving fuck out of that car every single time I drove it, and frequently drove it like a standard. That little stock 2.5 4-banger would even do rolling burnouts in 2nd 😂. It had 380k kms when I finally sold it, and still ran perfectly somehow. Good little car. But for anyone who's read this this far, STAY AWAY FROM ANY CVT EQUIPPED NISSAN. I literally changed at least 3 CVTs per week the whole time I worked for Nissan. Some cars were even on their third CVT before hitting 100k kms. It's absolutely unreal how bad they're made. Good ol Jatco CVTs 😂

Another point to be added is that the shots can be staged using the same jet, say by rpm. So, 150 jet (shot) staged between 3k rpm and 6k could look like a 50 shot per 1k rpm staring at 3k and cutting at 6k. This helps especially in low hp, stock internals, applications to reduce drastic shock to the engine while having a more linear power delivery. This can be done with a piggy back ecu specific to the nitro system while running stock of upgraded engine ecu. Just arm the system and control when boost hits by modulating rpm 👌

Why didn't you talk about the "too soon, junior" part of the movies that get it wrong? They always wait until the very end to hit the NOS and get that small shot of "super speed". But one bottle lasts way more than one dragrace + the sooner you get on power the better (as long as the wheels don't slip), so the "too soon. junior" part is invalid.
@theepicslayer7sss1014 жыл бұрын
exactly, i rather roll 250 km/h and more in the earlier part of the strait and most of it than only in the last part of it... going faster for longer is going faster overall, while simply reaching a higher number at the end does not really adds more. like going 0-250 in the first 25% and reaching 300 by the end is faster than going 0-250 in the first 75% and reaching 350 by the end! (driving a long time slow = being slow.)

Last cars I toyed with that had nitros, were Plymouth Barracuda drag cars, 1 was 750bhp engine with a multi stage 300bhp system, the other was 1000bhp with multistage 1500bhp system, both were set up the same though. Arming switch on the switch panel with a push button for purging. microswitches on the gear selector (determined which stage activated) and another on the carburetor, which activated the solenoids only at full throttle. 1st gear activated stage 1, which was 100bhp and 500bhp respectively. 2nd gear cut out stage 1 and anctivated stage 2, which was 200bhp and 1000bhp respectively. 3rd gear brought stage 1 back in, along side stage 2, which gave 300bhp and 1500bhp respectively. This was done, so that it was a gradual build up of power, rather than instant, even though it was only over a space of about 4 seconds for the lower powered 9.6s car (street legal) and just inder 3 seconds for the higher powered 6.1s car. Both times on true 1/4 mile asphalt tracks, not the shorter NHRA concrete tracks.

@@liambarker6749 Richards is neither entirely correct or entirely wrong. Breathing pure oxygen is dangerous. However, it is only deadly if done for long periods of time. So if Richards meant that "if we *always* breathed pure oxygen", then he is correct. However, as you pointed out, the act of using pure oxygen for a specific purpose is totally fine.
@mattjonesturbo14 жыл бұрын
I was told many years ago by an old drag racer that said nitrous uses the oxygen with the fuel for a bigger more intense combustion but the nitrogen in the mix pushes the piston down also when the mix splits atoms creating more of a power stroke, hotter bigger combustion and the cooling of the liquid.

I had a 99 firebird formula (LS1) with nitrous. It was a 125 shot with a 3000-6000 rpm window switch and a wide open throttle switch, so it could only spray when it was armed, in the rev window and my foot was too the floor. Pressure is also really important when it comes to nitrous so I had a bottle heater that would keep the pressure about 1000 psi. It was a really good setup. Nitrous is like Crack though and you go through bottles like it's going out of style.

Back in 2000, I had a 1994 Z28 with a wet nitrous fogger system jetted for 125 hp. 10 lb NOS bottle with a heater, no fancy remote bottle opener though. I had no button, just a master arm switch, fuel pressure safety switch and wide-open throttle switch. SO with master arm on, bottle open, it would spray if the throttle was fully open and sufficient fuel pressure. It was pretty fun, but no slam like in the movies. Just a gentle extra push. :)

Here is a thought. Instead of using nos couldnt you just use an air tank and hook it up to an air compressor and use a release the same way as nos? Then when you are out of boost the compressor fills the air tank back up so you can have boost again. Would that work? Just using straight air? Or would you need more fuel for the more air you are feeding the system?
