So, its a poor review effort I must say. I get the point, but its really no point, either you test it or don't. You can't review something by not following the instructions. Guys. Dont get discouraged about Launchbox. It's a great product. You can setup Launchbox on a computer, add all your emulators, game files, and art work , then copy the entire folder to a 256gig or 512 gig usb ( the prices are CHEAP!!!) . Now you have your own portable Retro Game system that will safely work on a PC. When the Launchbox hard drive originally came out , USB drives were still very expensive but not anymore. If you want to give it to a friend remove your keycode and everything still works and your friend can get updates and everything. What doesnt work is the "BIGBOX" interface. Dont worry about it, you wont miss it. I did pay to support the project .

I've picked up a number of these plug and play boxes, for that part of my collection, over the last year. None of them come close to steping up to my original PC emulator I built for that purpose, a couple years ago. I use the Big Box front-end and it displays and plays Wii, PS 2, GameCube, N64, ect. with a display quality that smokes the original consoles. So far, these little boxs, are simply fun little novelties in a disply case. With this box we have a hard drive depending on the ability of the purchasers own PC. I appreciate the point because Kinhank can't produce a little, affordable box that plugs and plays these emulators like my PC. But it seems the experiences will be all over the place depending on the various performance capabilities of the different PCs out there. The inconsistencies will probably end up an eventual hit and miss nightmare for Kinhank.

Its not "a lot of fun" to pick your own emulators and set everything up. You have to constantly update the emulators. If you find out about a new system, you need to research and find the emulator, download and set it up. Batoera or other emulationstation setups, the devs do all that. You don't have to set up anything. Just your controller and your done. I stopped using BigBox because Batocera has way too many advantages.

Based on some of the comments Russ, this is a tricky situation for you to consider in the future. I am of the camp that is fine with you showing the device because their deceptive marketing of the launchbox license could have tricked people and you basically debunked the legitimacy of it and you discussed several red flags that should turn people away. On the other hand, a lot of the video then focused on how well that improperly distributed software works, and many people might skip to that and buy it based on liking Big Box alone. Despite me understanding the video's context, I could see these types of products doing more harm than good for your channel in the long run. Just something to consider since I love your channel. As far as launchbox/big box goes, anyone reading this that has interest should buy the license themselves because that same lifetime license can then be used on basically any other devices you own. I use it on a custom arcade cabinet running a PC, and I would much rather spend money on an affordable license that I can personally own and manage and use on any new supporting device I buy, rather than giving this less ethical company money toward use of a shared license on this one product.

@@KingBobCat So, I bought it, it came in 3 weeks later. When I got it, several emulator platforms did not work, neo geo, neo geo cd, turbo graphix CD and sega saturn. I did do some tinkering and I got them to work. The emulators were not up to date, so I had to update them. Some emulators from the start, much like the video said, had messed up controls, that the buttons were wrongly mapped. So all I did was drag and drop my emulator to the folder to replace and that was a way i updated those emualators to my settings (dolphin, pcxs2, cemu, etc). I'd say, the hard drive is worth getting if you know what you're doing through launchbox/bigbox, just for the sure amount of roms and games. I did clean a lot out of unnecessary roms and games out to clear up space, but that's my preference. All in all, i enjoyed it, for the price, it wasn't bad because of the games that comes on it. But to someone buying it and not knowing what they are doing, then it wont be good for them. I think it is the best price on the market right now for what you get. AAnything on etsy or ebay, is easily a couple hundreds dollars more, but for the ones who don't know, or my night want, or have the time to do any tinkering through retroarch, launchbox, or any other emulators, paying more might be worth it.

You shouldn't be promoting this product, which is what you're doing just by talking about it, regardless of whether you recommend it or not. Just showing it is going to end up selling them to someone who wouldn't have otherwise known about it. Launchbox is under active development and is a commercial product. Their inclusion of a license is illegal and that license will be banned. It's already been brought to the attention of the development team.

I just got in the 12tb version. I totally agree about being uncomfortable with installing programs from unknown sources (China or anywhere), but having said that, I think it was worth the $280 for being a source of roms for my Odin II that I don't have to hunt down. would I used these programs on my personal laptop, maybe an isolated junk one around the house

As a long time user of Launchbox and lifetime licence holder gotta say I'm disgusted. you should report to launchbox to get that licence revoked. and no, they didn't make any of those themes, the lb community did.

It has been revoked, thanks for being a license holder.

Good video, thank you for the review; while I know this question shouldn't go here, I have to know; did the creator of this drive get overlays working within graphical notifications? As far as I know after a certain version of 11.x that quit working when overlays are enabled and never got fixed. I've asked folks in Discord for LB and they say "it's just how it works now for Windows; notifications cannot be "always on top" when overlays are used." For example, see timestamp 09:45 where overlays are enabled and nice notifications appear from below. EDIT: Realized later that issue is with Retroarch versioning, not LaunchBox. Curious of what version of Retroarch is being used then, didn't see that in the video anywhere....

Just move the notifications over the game play area. Thats what I do.

Pat and Ian would label this company the “scumbag seller of the week.” It’s the equivalent of selling a hard drive of your personal emulation setup loaded with roms on eBay. They are hurting an indie dev. Maybe if it were a corporate behemoth It wouldn’t be so egregious, but is this a product that ETA and the community really love. You’re my favorite reviewer for the budget gaming market, but this was not a good call to platform.

I would just find a NTSC ROM burner and setup the emulation myself. Done this with a multi DVDs back around the mid 00s. I had all arcade and cartridge based ROMs. Shame I lost the HDD I had it on.

Piracy aside, this can definitely be maintained better. If I did it, I’d first and foremost set up an auto update system for as many emulators as can be updated (for example using something like scoop, esp with the clearly outdated version of PCSX2 there)

Is everyone's mind controlled by others? Where is the ability to think independently? The author takes his own point of view as the final interpretation right, which is very unprofessional. Everyone does not confirm with the manufacturer, but believes in a one-sided view here, which really makes me admire.

you can EASILY turn off the bezels lol. This hard drive is definitely a good deal.

The tearing is from the speed of the hard drive. Launchbox and big box only require a specific MS Net version and vulkan(if you want the best performance). Everything can be setup to be portable, so it seems these guys just copied a fail image and want to make the user do all the work. I have my harddrive set up with BigBox and it works on any PC I attach it to, exactly what these guys advertise...but actually working.

They took someones build. A guy named wolfanoz, shows his name on the startup screen for big box. He would not have allowed them to do this. Looks like they built off of it, and messed it up.

Love the channel and your content, I watch all of your videos and enjoy the vast majority of them even if the equipment reviewed aren't that interesting. That said I'm gonna have to put this video down and let it run on mute (I want you to get the play time) but holy crap this product is silly. They are actually selling a hard drive with files on it. Big fail on their part. I'm glad you made this video for people that wouldn't be as cautious they should be. But seriously, this is such a silly product. Good video though.

Ahh come now. Someone like me who has a low knowledge of PC's and came from Consoles I think ur under estimating the market. Many Peeps out there are gobbling these up as most have no idea how to get all this up and running from scratch. Alot of Dummies out there.

@@unorthdoxcleric6953 I appreciate the video and his opinion, and even acknowledge the people that this could be marketed to. I am happy he made this video for the specific reason that people could see that it's not the solution you're looking for. There are better, easier and safer options out there, and I believe that it's important that people can see what this really is. I appreciate Russ and what he does, and exposing this hard drive that in all reality could have spyware on it that could gain access to your computer, I think it's really important for people to realize what this is and how dangerous it could be to the customer. I was only saying that the video doesn't offer anything to ME, so I'm gonna put my phone down and do something else so that Russ gets the view time because I appreciate him and what he does and I really hope his fast channel growth keeps going up exponentially. I apologize that I didn't originally get my point across.
