If I actually manage to get my long run done at a reasonable time of day, drinking a big cup of coffee afterwards really helps me not feel like I got hit by a truck the rest of the day.

The many applications of caffeine make it so useful! Plus, it's helping you restock glycogen!

Caffeine is very beneficial! I've used it for a long time. Though I have to reduce the consumption of coffee during the day to avoid over tolerance. I usually just drink caffeinated drinks in the morning.

I might have been convinced Jason. I am 35 years old and have never used caffeine, ever. Looks like it's time to try something new. Coming to then end of my training block soon concluding with a 24 hour race in August. It's a bit close to race day to change up my fuel and hydration strategy that I've got dialed in pretty well. I might dabble with caffiene a bit this cycle but next cycle ... you just brought the hype for my winter ultra! Thank you!

Funny I have been saying it for years. I take two excedrine migraine pills before every big race or hard long workout. Always feel better and preform better. I have struggled for years with migraine headaches. I have found caffeine to be my biggest help and friend.

Thanks for the code!!! Caffeine has been shown to help with heat acclimation as well... Also, there are different types of caffeine. Big myth is that caffeine dehydrates you.
@JasonFitzgerald4 ай бұрын
Another great point! As long as your caffeine is in water (i.e., 2before, coffee, etc.) it's not dehydrating since most of the beverage is water.

Good thing I usually run in the morning when I’m fully caffeinated.

The caffeine content in coffee/espresso is so wide-ranging I wouldn’t even bother counting it. Drink it if you like it but supplement with another source if possible.
@JasonFitzgerald4 ай бұрын
This is a good point. If you really want to know how much caffeine you're intaking, a more measured source is best.

Great video Coach JF but IDK this is rather individual. I know I’ve tried so many different combinations including well known quality Gels and it just doesn’t work for me as it spikes the hell out of my HR and literally overheats my body

While everyone is different, caffeine does benefit *most* and the science is very clear on that. Alas, not everyone is a responder unfortunately...

Thanks for vid. Can you comment on muscle cramping from (high) caffiene intake?
@JasonFitzgerald4 ай бұрын
I'm not aware of this in any real way. You might be "twitchy" but that's not a cramp. And to truly cause a muscle cramp with caffeine, you're probably looking at 600+ mgs which is difficult to take in without you trying. Just follow the guidelines discussed in the video and you'll be fine.

Does guarana, another type of caffeine source, act in the same way and do you advise using it as and when?
@JasonFitzgerald4 ай бұрын
Guarana is not nearly as studied as a PED for endurance running so I can't comment.

i dont think we really need a video about using caffeine, considering the average american consumes entirely too much of it
@JasonFitzgerald4 ай бұрын
You are completely wrong. Caffeine must be used strategically, not just willy nilly, for best results. This video is about using it strategically. In the future, just don't post your ignorant comments. Let people think you're smart.
@jimoconnor85974 ай бұрын
I only take caffeine for the running benefit. Have never had a single cup of coffee in my life (I'm 61) and very rarely eat chocolate. Average Americans are not trying to be above average runners!

Here's one thing not to love about caffeine - if it reduces inflammation, it means it reduces the training effect, and as a result - adaptations. Same story as with antioxidants, cold immersion and similar therapies. Just my unscientific but pretty informed opinion)

What do you want me to say? "Don't drink too much or you'll poop your pants." Doesn't everyone know that? I honestly don't want to hold adult's hands through something as basic as caffeine education. If you need to learn that the hard way, you need to learn it the hard way.
