Mealworm farmers often use a 5-tray bucket sifter set commonly purchased off of Amazon. This video demonstrates why you should purchase an additional tray (1/30 mesh).

Got My 1/30 Sifter Today And Can't Wait To Use It... full disclosure The 1/30 is the Only sifter I've bought from this Brand because I already had other sifters and ways to sort/clean my worms, But once I started watching you and Midwest Mealworms I wanted to start Frass collecting for my dads garden as well as having a way to sift without loosing any Tiny Worms!!!

I find that even the really small babies go through my 1/30th, so I'm gonna order a 1/50 and see if that stops them. My bins have beetles in them for at least 3 months at a time, so when I finally sort the bin It has from tiny, to full sized mealworms.

Hello, I was wondering if the 1/30 size was available anywhere else in the US as it is out of stock on Amazon. Let me know if you know any stores that have it online for sale as I live in Florida as well, thanks.

I've noticed baby worms in my frass after resifting with a hand cooking sifter, what do you do about that? I'd hate to through them out. I use the square Sluice Fox set on Amazon and I think the smallest is a #20 screen.

Trick is to never sift grass from trays with babies in them. If you separate your beetles and then move them to new trays every couple weeks, the trays with eggs will all generally be the same size/age. These baby trays won’t need to be sifted for 6-8 weeks (depending on your temperatures), and by this time they will be large enough to get caught in a 1/20 or 1/30 mesh.

How do you separate frass from eggs? Can you do this with a sieve? Or do the eggs stick to bran?

Because I separate my beetles from my worms, I never have to worry about this. Beetles hardly eat bran, so they don’t generate enough frass to require sifting.

@@spacecoastmealworms not to say they don't though... I've definitely seen some of my very hungry Superworm Beetles Munching down the Oats I gave them, (of course this was after I took them out of my Isopod bin where they were most likely competing and loosing out on food) and that's when I discovered I had 18 in there and I wanted to start trying to raise them again! lol

What is the 1/2 tray for? What is that big you would sift with that one? I’d rather just have the 2nd thru 6th trays and skip the first tray.

It helps to catch larger chunks of food, but more importantly provides vertical space for the substrate to separate/aerate as it falls down. It also provides a place for my round pupae sifter insert to sit, if you purchase one from spacecoastmealworms.com 😎

I’m using wheat bran. Should I freeze or microwave my wheat bran before I use it? I’ve seen that online.
@scottjost857
@scottjost857 5 жыл бұрын
Robert West absolutely! Either method is fine. I have a refrigerator in my garage dedicated just for my worms, and I throw my entire 50lb bag in the freezer for a few days before I use it.
@robwestonline

scott jost thank you for replying. I’ve heard that if I don’t freeze or microwave my wheat bran it will have mites in it.
@scottjost857
@scottjost857 5 жыл бұрын
It absolutely could. It could also have pantry moths or a whole host of other unwanted pest eggs in it. Even Rainbow Mealworms has a process for sterilizing their bran - they keep store it in a large metal water tower looking structure to allow it to naturally ‘bake’ in the California sun. Better to be safe than sorry!
@robwestonline
@robwestonline 5 жыл бұрын
scott jost after I freeze my wheat bran does it need to be stored in an air-tight container or can I simply store it in a regular container?
@scottjost857
@scottjost857 5 жыл бұрын
Robert West I just keep mine in a sterilite container afterwards. It doesn’t last more than a couple weeks until I replace it with a new bag so it’s not really an issue of needing it to be airtight.

You really don't need the two largest sizes (1/2, 1/4), but since the 3 other pans are about $15 each, you might as well get the whole set for almost the same cost. Most small farms just use a kitchen sieve or separate by hand. These green pans are for medium to larger farms. One of my other videos shows how long sifting takes for a medium sized farm without the bucket sifters: kzbin.info/www/bejne/eIjNlYludp1jp6c

hi, do the eggs get in the frass?
@spacecoastmealworms
@spacecoastmealworms 5 жыл бұрын
Farhana, if you keep all of your worms, beetles, and pupae in one bin this system may not work well for you. If you have eggs mixed in with worms then yes, the eggs will stick to the frass and may fall through this system and into the frass bucket. But most farmers who use this bucket don’t do it that way - they separate their beetles into their own containers, so any frass from the worms are egg-free.

Where DO you get your music?!? I could listen all day to the music in your vids. Also, a vibrating (off balance motor) 1/30 sifter is in my build-it ToDo list so I don't have to do the hand-Shake-n-Bake thing! And, I'm now sifting the egg-substrate, then Frass (the last two steps) the way you explain in this video. THANK you!
