Welcome back to the @WorldofCars channel!
First of all, I've made a mistake - incorrectly naming Piston as "Cylinder head" and Connecting Rod as "Piston". I am very well aware that I cannot see cylinder head from the bottom of the engine (where I was capturing the video). I apologize and hope did not mislead anyone. Unfortunately, I only noticed this mistake after uploading the video.
Once this has been cleared, let's try to answer the question: "Should you change an Engine Oil every 5k miles or 6 months?"
Short answer is YES!!! And here’s why - in this video I’ll be showing you the 2.4L Mitsubishi Galant engine 4 cylinders with 220k miles on it that never went overdue on the oil change. The results of the frequent oil change speak for themselves and are obvious in this video.
I’ll be taking a close look at each cylinder wall and piston to determine the overall condition of each cylinder. After inspecting my engine, I can assure that it easily can give a break to some of the relatively new engines. If you do want your car engine to last longer than an average, you must change engine oil every 5k miles or 6 months!
Remember - Oil is cheap, Engine is expensive!!!
Enjoy!

This is proof that engine mileage means nothing when talking about condition. It's 100 percent maintenance. This looks better than most 20k mile engines.

I was raised on 3000 mile oil change intervals. The car I have now recommends 5k changes but I still do 3k. Working at a local dealership, I see many cars come in with oil related issues and a lot of them DO follow the 5-6k recommendations. If your car is consuming/burning oil, your oils lubrication and cleaning properties will deteriorate much quicker. Shorter oil change intervals and frequent checking/filling will help the engine last longer.

Even if you change at the recommended 5-6k mile interval, if the vehicle is doing a ton of short trips, particularly in cold weather, that oil is going to be far worse than an engine that does mostly highway driving and the oil is changed before 5k miles. Direct injection has made that much worse. Gas direct injection engines generate fine soot that's more similar to the soot in a diesel engine than soot in a port-injected gas engine. That soot accumulates in the engine oil. GDI engines also have a tendency to put more unburned fuel into the engine oil due to the cold start characteristics of most GDI engines. That's why newer GDI engines have oil that looks extremely dark and thinner than normal well before the oil change is due.

Only guessing here, but perhaps you were raised on 3k miles conventional oil change intervals. Nowadays, mostly full synthetic or synthetic oils are used - it went a long way from conventional oil in terms of additives. Synthetic (and full synthetic) oils have detergents and other additives that help keep the engine clean, and allow longer change intervals. My personal opinion, just go with High Mileage Full Synthetic oil of any brand and keep changing every 125-150 work hours (which in general is indeed 5k miles), and your engine will last very long time. Thank you for watching!

@ngtitovWorldOfCars I recently had an engine replaced under warranty that was consuming a quart ever 1000 miles. By 3000 miles, sometimes sooner, the oil was black and sometimes gritty. The new engine is doing much better and probably could go 5k miles, but my dealer uses bulk oil and I have no way of knowing if it's conventional or semi-synthetic. For me, it's not worth the risk. Engines aren't cheap

You'll hear all kind of stories, such as "This is Toyota Oil or Honda Oil and it will go 15k miles easy without oil change!" NO!! Don't trust dealerships, they'll do everything possible to get your car going before warranty expires (5 years or 60k miles), and then they washed their hands and say "Welcome back!! Unless someone is performing regular oil analyses, all of this seems like speculation to me. How do you know at all the difference a 3k, 5k, or 7k drain interval makes if you aren't analyzing the oil? For example, I've owned my 2016 GTI from brand new. The manufacturer recommended oil change interval is 10k. I've been changing it anywhere between 6800-7200 while sending in oil samples to be analyzed. All of which showed that the wear metals in my oil were all below average, and that I had a very high TBN which means a high amount of additive left for a longer run. I'm still changing at the same interval level because of my good lab results, but this just shows at least for my car and the oil I'm using that anything under 5k is a total waste of money and oil. In my opinion, unless you check a 3k, 5k, and 7k sample and compare data, you're just guessing...

Some brands went to near Zero vac on their PCV systems and this is why you find stuck rings. 1-2inHG vacuum in the crankcase is needed to pull blowby gases from the pistons along with the heat. Both of these cause varnish buildup from overheated oil and stuck oil control rings. The byproduct is early OCI's. They do this for EPA standards to be meet. This is fine to get through factory warranty but not for the long term. Hook a Manometer to the dipstick tube and test for vac, if you don't see 1-2inHG that's the problem. The engine should be cleaner on the inside than the outside. The varnish buildup on the bottom of the piston is a sign of too much heat for the oil you're using. Petroleum base oil cokes around 250-300*, Syn around 400 and thicker high end Syn can be as high as 700*F. OE recommends 0 or 10W-20 but is too thin so I've always run 0 or 10W-30 Syn for added film strength and cooling. I have a 2010 Acura MDX with 289K miles which is prone to stuck rings but I have 0 oil consumption per 1000 miles. Low Tension ring pack with oil that's too thin is a problem but not the primary problem. It looks like some OE's did this so the blowby would be left in the engine and when you changed your oil filter you would remove the contaminants out with it. The secondary problem was created by overheating of the oil and stuck rings if you didn't use the proper oil for the cars usage.

Thank you for your post and very interesting information! I've re-read your post several times to completely understand your thoughts and it all makes sense. I found some things are completely new to me. I wasn't aware that crankcase needs 1-2 inHG vacuum to pull blowby gases from the piston. I knew that to check the engine condition, you need to remove oil cap while it's running a pull a bit away, and it should start sucking the air (creating a bit of vacuum sort of speak) in the engine pulling the oil cap back on its place. But I had no idea why. I also did not know that some brands started designing their engine with 0 vacuum in PCV. About the oil - I use full synthetic 5w-30 during winter seasons and I put full synthetic 10w-30 during hot summer season. So far I haven't had any problems with oil rings or compression rings. It does not burn any oil and I have about ~150 psi compression on each cylinder.

Oil doesn't go bad sitting in the pan. No need to arbitrarily change it at 6 months. It won't turn acidic without fuel getting into it from combustion, plus that reaction requires heat. Neither exist while the engine isn't running.

I still change my oil AND FILTER every 2,000 miles, but I don't yet use synthetic. My truck's engine is old with lots of miles, so it has some leaks and it does burn some oil, so it isn't worth it to use synthetic in it. My wagon doesn't leak or burn oil, but it's engine is also old with lots of miles. Synthetic is pretty thin and I am afraid I will have low oil pressure if I use thin oil.

Yes, older cars require conventional oil and it is quite risky to change to synthetic or full synthetic due to the problem you've described. I've used conventional oil on this car up until 2010 and then decided to give it a try with full synthetic. I didn't notice any problems and decided to keep on going with it. GDI engines in particular need more frequent oil changes. Most of the timing chain issues with GM GDI engines is due to the diesel-like sootand fuel diluted engine oil associated with GDI. Even their V8 engines with cylinder deactivation mostly have issues because the owner doesn't change the oil often enough and does a lot of short trip driving that dilutes and contaminates the oil to the point that deposits form in the tiny oil passages that make the system work.

Well yea thats nice and all, but when it's inside of a metal engine block, with openings that can expose it to various things like condensation and contaminants like carbon deposits and combustion byproduct being left in it after even a minuscule amount of usage, instead of inside of a completely sealed container impervious to anything from the outside, it will still degrade whether it's being used or not. No it wont just automatically turn bad at the 6-month/12-month mark like it's implied from standard industry oil change intervals, but I can tell you that oil will still degrade at least a noticeable amount if it's been put into an engine and is even only seldom used. I mean honestly oil is such a cheap commodity that plays such a vitally important role for a vehicle that if you're trying to weasel out a few more miles from each jug that maybe costs $30-$50 2 or 3 times a year, you have bigger problems than being tricked by oil and vehicle manufacturers about oil change intervals.

@ngtitovWorldOfCars
@ngtitovWorldOfCars 23 күн бұрын
The idea/purpose of any dealership is to see you again in 5-6 years after selling you a new vehicle. One of the most efficient ways of doing so is to insist that your car requires 10k-15k miles or 1 year oil change (or longer) intervals. They know better than us that they won't make any money by changing oils in running cars, but they will selling new cars (especially to the same customers every 5-6 years). If you drive your car frequently, and changing oil as they recommended, most likely you will be getting a new car in 5-6 years, or performing costly repairs on your engine with them. Of course, the engine won't explode nor stop running. Most likely it will be some sort of accumulation of all type of problems, such as burning oil, power loss and etc. I also have Toyota Camry 2016 - got it brand new during huge Christmas sale , and sales person told me that Toyota Oil and Engines are much more advanced than any other oils, and only require 10k or 1 year change intervals. This is their way to trick and mislead you. Trust me, regardless of brand, any dealership will try to get hands on the cheapest oil they can get - it is not Toyota oil, or Honda oil, it is indeed the cheapest oil they're getting. That's the reason I've said do not trust dealerships and do not go with their recommended oil change intervals.

That is exactly why you need to change the oil every 6 months. Short trips are very bad for the oil. Cold engine indling is very bad for the oil. Water and hydrocarbons will enter the oil and will not evaporate and burn off, since the engine would only run for a very shot time at operating temperature. The oil will oxidize for all of that.

I'm not questioning.. Just wondering - did you actually see your engine from inside after 200k miles and what condition it was in? Just FYI, some car owners have no idea about oil change at all. Period. They just buy a car and drive till it dies. Some of the well-made engines, such as Toyota or Honda, can easily last 70k miles without oil change, and then it just dies. I have no doubts about German engineering (Audi), and I'm sure they can build engines that will last 300k miles on 15k miles oil change intervals. The real question is I guess, how much do you want to get out of your engine?

Most engine wear happens right after an oil change. A lot of the additives don’t kick in until about 8000 miles, and is when those modifiers bind to the parts and give you better protective properties. By changing the oil so frequently, you are doing more harm than good, giving lots of wear with the new oil and not giving time for the additives to start working. Stick to the manufacturer recommended intervals in your owners manual.

When do you know it starts to break down and no longer provides appropriate lubrication? I agree with "6 months" bs - the idea is (and I was trying to avoid complexity in the video) you should change oil based on engine work hours, and not miles or months (especially). We can't judge the oil condition based on months or days. Most of oil such as 5w30 and 10w30 start to break down after engine runs over 200 Work Hours. Therefore, good changing point is between 125-150 Work Hours. Under normal circumstances, 150 Work Hours averages to 5k miles or 6 months (whichever comes first). Of course, no one will keep up with engine work hours. So, it is easier to say 5k miles or 6 months. Hope this helps and thank you for watching and leaving comment!

Engine oil changes depend on load/hours, mileage is irrelevant. In Aviation it's 50 hours which is approximately 3000 miles driving at 60mph so to be on the safe side, anything else ruins the engines not because of the oil quality but because it gets contaminants and heat cycles, thus oil technology does not change much. Excessive idling at traffic lights and hard accelerations decrease oil life, for a car changing it to 5000 kilometers or around 3000 miles is ideal, changing high quality oil to 5000 miles or 8000 kilometers is a good solution so not to overdo it or be due to an oil change. Any suggestion saying oil changes should be made to 15.000 miles or so they're just trying to sell you a new car. If you don't like what i say you should know that when i take apart broken engines all i see is a huge sludge mess that sometimes is even the reason that ruins the engines, clog oil channels etc. Gas engines get out of factory spec after around 70-80k miles and need rebuild, for a car application you can have it work problem free to thousands of miles more, it just needs regular oil changes, unless you save on oil and plan to rebuild the engine sooner.

On many of today’s engines, they are of higher compression than older cars. This is due to the Mfg trying to squeeze out more mpg and many smaller engines are turbocharged. This higher compression causes more blow-by the rings. Fuel will get by the rings and dilute the oil so, changing your oil every 5000 miles or 6 months will keep the engine looking and running like new. Like he said…oil is cheap, engine expensive.
@rkan2

In most cases it is just a waste of money to make the engine of your car outlast the rest of the components. By the time you've changed the oil an extra 30 times, you've probably wasted 1800$ for a simple engine and you'll be more than likely close to end of the car's useful life.

Not necessarily true. I guess, the bottom question is how much do you want to get out of your car/engine. I've had my 22 year old car for 17 years. Yes, it does require maintenance, which is much cheaper than a car loan. First of all, engine is the MOST important component of a car - without it, it is just good for a junk yard, everything else is easily maintainable and if it's not your car is still drivable. Without engine it is not. Yes, my car has a broken bumper, rusty spots, air conditioning broke awhile ago. It actually used to leak rain water in the trunk. However, it is still drivable and I really want/hope to keep it for another 10 years avoiding car loans for as long as I can. Hope it helps! Thank you for watching!

What "working hours" man?!!! This makes now sense what so ever! You go by miles due to the fact the engine works in different rpm. If your engine has worked for 200 hours inside your garage just for a month, you don't go for oil change! Lastly, there are oil analysis companies where you can send oil samples. Guess what: These companies go by mile age.
@ngtitovWorldOfCars
@ngtitovWorldOfCars 21 күн бұрын
Just FYI, 1 hour of idling is equivalent to ~30 miles - this is a rule of thumb. So, if engine idled for 200 hours, that's ~6k miles and you certainly need oil change. Engine operates in range of RPMs. Yes, the higher RPM the more it degrades the oil, however, this is not due to RPM itself per say, it's due to higher temperature as a direct result. The higher the temperature, the more it degrades the oil. But RPM averages about 1.5-2k, unless you have manual transmission, and like going above 3k. Also, keep in mind that there are some stationary gasoline engines that are used for generating electricity, power pumps, and compressors. So based on your hypothesis, no oil change is required regardless how much they work since they have 0 mileage? I'm sorry, but someone mislead you there. Oil change interval is based on Engine Work Hours, not mileage. Since no car owner will keep up with engine hours, and 150-200 Work Hours averages to 5k miles, it is easier to go by mileage. Please do some additional research. Thank you for watching!
