Great vid Rhett, explained very well! New format is cool. Like you , I will often use different guitars and different amps (amp models in my case). Tracks that are just doubles of the same recording don't sound anywhere near as good as double tracked guitars. This is brought forward in the mix in a metal context. Modern metal players strive to play as tight as possible when doing this. I'll even occasionally quad track. It's easy to get mud doing this. I usually hard pan my higher gain guitars, then on the next set of guitars I pick a much cleaner tone. Like more of a crunch than high gain and not panned as wide. Can sound super thick but retain punch and definition. Usually 2 is plenty tho. ...And dude! 11k subs already. Sweet!

That Solo, the legato run at the end up to that bend... Probably one of the best smallish clips of your guitar playing ive ever seen on your channel. i mean its always good, but i usually am more drawn to the voicings u choose and the tone, but that solo... Thanks for everything!

I'll probably get shamed here but I'm 180 degrees from your approach. I use a Helix and track direct via USB recording both the wet and dry signal into two different tracks. This allows me to re-amp the dry and get consumed by the analysis-paralysis of being able to change the sound of my original until I drive myself nuts. Your sounds are great.

Mostly as a monitor during recording and then to judge whether I played the part the way I wanted to before I spend any time tweaking. I go nuts if a part is even slightly out of time. I usually end up muting the original part out once I decide my playing was ok, but once in a while Ill go back and find I like the original sound the best.

Very similar. I'm that guy that uses 6-10 guitars on each song. Chords are normally panned hard left and right. A lot of times one will be octave chords. Riffs are panned about 50% Left and Right. Solo's down the middle. I do enjoy doubling leads with an acoustic sometimes. I use a baritone for thickening as well.

Rhet, I have a question, I see you use the natural overdrive from your amps when it comes to recording, the question is, what if you need some reverb or some delay? Do you use your DAW's effects to apply them or do you use pedals from your pedal board, and if you do use pedals, how do you control to send the natural overdrive to the pedals or you just send the effects to your natural od's? I mean, in what order do you use them? Thanks a lot for reading.

@rogerconnick

Hi Rhett, thanks for the great video - really valuable info. I've just started mic'ing up real cabs after double-tracking using impulse responses for many years. My biggest problem so far is that I've been getting unwanted chorus/phase/flange sounds that I thought were due to the room I'm recording in (they are more obvious when the mix is played in mono). However, after watching this I think it might be because i'm using exactly the same guitar, pedal, amp, mic (SM57), mic position and mic pre for both left and right reamp takes. I will try using a different guitar for one side, and if that doesn't solve it, i''ll try different guitar + different pedal for one side, and if that still doesn't solve it i'll try a different guitar, different pedal, and different amp. My only concern is that it might make the mix sound lop-sided and less even, but it seems like you've been getting some great results using this technique and I hope it will improve my situation. Cheers!

This is a good video sounds great i like your content. This Verry basic stuff i guess some people have to learn still.. ive done studio work and worked made records with my band. I use the same concept but i like to do a 3to4 track mix (normally) twangy or treble sound for the highs if metal a 5105 type sound then orange /marshallish sound for the mids and some thing with low end for the bottom like a messa ..kinda just a high mid and low mix just for a thick guitar sound.

Rhett, I love your content. It’s very helpful and informative. You obviously have an extremely good ear for both music and tone. Your recordings are fantastic! I do have one small criticism, though. I listened to this video with headphones on, and during your monologues there’s a room hiss that’s so loud and so distracting that I couldn’t even concentrate on what you were saying. I know that room noise (fans, HVAC, electrical interference) can be challenging, but as a professional producer and sound engineer, I don’t know how you could have accepted that. I would like to challenge you to remove that room hiss. It would probably be a GREAT idea for a video. I’ve noticed that I have the same problem. Learning how you address it would definitely up MY game!
