I injured my knee about 13 years ago and was talked into switching from orthodox to southpaw by a friend who was into JKD. It took months of working my weak side. Trying to work blocking with my left in the rear and throwing a # 2. My #2 felt so weak and uncoordinated at first, but I stuck with and fought that way for 6 years. I got pretty good at it. 7 years ago, I started training and teaching at a different gym, and they only taught out of the orthodox stance, so back to orthodox I went. Now I like switch hitting and have the best of both worlds. Great video man.

I'll give another reason you might consider. I'm a judoka, I stand in southpaw naturally as a right-handed thrower. So, if you incorporate judo-style takedowns in your game, a cross-stance (from a boxing perspective) is a natural stance for throwing. Just like this places your strong hand in a faster attack position, your strong-side throws will have less distance to travel, or rotation to execute.

There are many benefits to switching southpaw. I like to switch to southpaw and do a cross, corkscrew uppercut (the combo conor lands on Dustin in their second fight). Fighting out of the southpaw stance also allows me to do my judo easier as we are taught to judo with our dominant hand forward. Firing the straight left is also hella fun when your sparring partner has not been accustomed to it yet. There are also some downsides. I notice my defense has significantly changed and I rely on my in and out footwork more and I have trouble in my boxing shell guard. It's also harder to set up a liver hook because my left hand has to travel a longer distance. However, the liver kick is easier as you don't need to do a switch kick.

similar here. I started with Judo and then went to striking arts. Judo dominant forward, I, at the time, unknowingly became a dominant hand southpaw. I'm using a Phill shell stance fighting from the outside. My game is jab and lead hook heavy. Downside is the weaker right leg (which naturally is also my stronger leg) for power kicks, but at least I can basically uncheckable (too fast) stinging lead leg low kicks. My rear leg power kick is noticeably slower though.

I am south paw. What I find is if I open south paw and step through to orthodox while heavily pressuring a few things happen. First people aren't as adapt at fighting south paw so intiallity they are already thrown off a bit, eventually I'll find the angel to step through and that's when I really pressure. Like Jeff noted the biggest thing I find is with power hand in front is my head movement, my foot work, it's all alot sharper. With that sharpness increase on the fly I start using blinding attacks with very heavy pressure, mostly jabs, with check hooks for when they try to push me off, occasionally a cross to vary the attack. Once I really feel them wilting thats when I find the angel to step back and line up some nasty power side shots. Things like body jab from orthodox (my power side first) double it up to the head, circle a bit and come back south paw with the same double jab combo but with my power side lining up a hook, body kick, or cross. I love how the body jab loads the hips by changing levels giving you a rising angel, after the jabs from both stances, if you sense your opponents confused these power shots are super damaging. And you get away clean. If your opponents not confused expect to be punished, especially by low leg attacks. Alot of experienced fighters will attack this movement speed directly. And my stance is often extended while chasing so it's a weakness. As far as your defenses I notice this too, and am adapting a modified Philly shell similar to Poiriers, he adapted his from his lack of defense because he would sqaure up often. The shell allows him to transition thru those things and patches that weakness up at least a bit. This is for sure a pressure fighter style.

Strong hand in front definitely has its merits, both for throwing stronger jabs but also for messing with an opponent used to fighting stance "symmetrically". Switching stance can really throw someone off of their game when their drilled combinations and distance management doesn't work as intended or they aren't used to getting bopped with harder jab counters.

I am pretty ambidextrous when coming to fighting stance. I trained JKD, Arnis (Stick), kickboxing, and some Silat back in 1999-2003. My first and primary skill was Arnis. They utilize strong side forward. This is to avoid getting hit by a stick on the week side. A lot of stick fighting concepts do require a fair degree of stance change. Funny enough I was never taught in JKD to have strong side forward. Empty hand Arnis and JKD were very similar. Traps and center line control. That being said our JKD was modified primarily for entries, then what ever was available we would utilize. We might flow to cross, hook, uppercut, maybe get a clench to a throw or take down into BJJ. Maybe if it was available a straight JKD punch. We would do a lot of “destruction” drills. We would literally punch the inside elbow or bicep. On less experience people I got to a point were I could punch their punch, pretty consistently in live sparing. That’s super risky at higher levels. All I do now is NoGi BJJ. The striking arts are just too much for my old shoulders, elbows, and wrists. I received my blue belt in 2002 and quit. Fortunately for me I started back almost 3 years ago and I’m finally teetering on the edge of my purple belt. Anyways great video and good commentary.

Power Hand forward is the best way to go for multiple reasons. All the trainers who say otherwise are just wrong
@voiceoverandmocapguy2 жыл бұрын
At many MT and MMA classes they always told me this was wrong, even though it felt natural for me. One huge advantage is being able to have short range KO power. Comes in handy when it makes you Southpaw (but with power in the right hand.) You slip to the outside and KO with the closer hand / elbow.
@jgw1042 жыл бұрын
Wouldnt slipping to the outside give your opponent the inside and thus the shorter distance to target? Genuine question
@jgw1042 жыл бұрын
Or do you mean closer hand as in the lead hand being closer to the opponent than your rear hand?
@voiceoverandmocapguy2 жыл бұрын
@@jgw104 Hey Jayden yeah I meant slipping to their outside (their left your right) as a Southpaw. Its a classic southpaw setup, only difference here is doing it with power hand in front. For example, opponent in orthodox and youre in southpaw. Your right hand is closer to them. So they throw a jab (their left hand) and you slip to your right (their outside.) So you get options of short hook with the right, jab with the right, and 1-2. Usually a jab doesnt hurt them but if you slip to their outside you get this nice angle on the jaw. And if your power hand is the lead (i.e. right hand) it also adds damage to the jab. I think I read Manny Pacquiao and Lomachenko both box southpaw with power hand in front but I could be wrong.

I think it'd be cool if you tried doing a split entry from that stance. Very similar to you using the back hand to parry and then striking with the lead hand. Instead, as the opponent throws a jab, you slip to his outside slightly, using your rear hand to subtly guide his punch off target while simultaneously striking with your jab. I should also mention, that using the split entry like this requires your opponent to use their jab from southpaw or them throwing a cross at you.

Ty for this, actually cool and relevant advice for me. I have been training for a little while now and I'm a south paw but really I prefer to switch stances and do all of the stuff(my coach makes me do drills in southpaw, but let's me spar how I want). What I really like is spamming the lead jab as orthodox and and stepping through on a cross turning it into a jab and spamming that, to line up the power hand as a cross or body hook alot or body kick during the same sequence. This jab spamming step through both stances makes it really easy adjust to my opponent as I am pressuring. So I stay as safe as possible with power hand jabs and good head movement, and when I feel them retreating I step through and start lining up a damaging shot. I'm getting advanced with it too, Ive found if I power hand jab the body and then upstairs, switch thru with a cross, double that up as a jab then change levels back to the body with the final jab, my power side hook is open all day. I've rocked a few dudes and my coach has actually been pretty impressed. They think I'm pretty talented but really I just do my homework, Alex Perierra does that alot. I was unaware this was a JKD concept. Thanks again that is helpful.

I've always sparred lead hand forward. I started off in American Kempo karate who's founder (Ed Parker) knew Bruce Lee. I got taught to keep the lead hand in front which works wonders since you usually use the front hand to parry & it's quicker & harder than a left jab. Pare that with a lead leg heavy kick style & most people can't close range fast enough. A right check hook is also way more powerful than a left check hook. When I joined a point sparring dojo that always taught orthodox, none of the karatekas knew what to do about my open stance since they were all used to closed stance. Now after training at an only southpaw dojo & an only orthodox dojo I find switching stance a piece of cake & it sure helps when getting my front leg beat up leg kicks.

@adcyuumi2 жыл бұрын
There is SO much you can do if you can fight well (aka: muscle memory + experience) from both Orthodox and Southpaw - it is several orders of magnitude better than only being able to fight well from one or the other. The main reason that fighters tend to train only one is to get more reps in it, but at a point every fighter will see diminishing returns on training that way. A lot of what you get is what you can do in transition - it's not just being able to fight from stance A or B; it's being able to fight fluidly while switching back and forth, as well as in that moment where you are squared up between stances. You get reps in something the person in front of you typically gets ZERO reps in... and we all know what happens when the person in front of you has little to no idea what they are supposed to be doing. For people who have some degree of ambidexterity, being able to fight this way is leaning into a biological advantage you have on your opponent. It's the same as wielding your height, your reach, your stamina, etc etc. A properly thrown snapping jab, where you turn the hips, hits hard. Female fighters all know this, as wider hips equals more power from the jab when it is executed properly - typically it's a female fighter's best punch, sometimes her hardest punch actually (but usually about equal to a straight rear hand punch). When someone with wider hips throws a proper jab with their strong hand, it can hit hard enough to knock a person down (or even out if they have fast hands and set feet). It's a nasty, nasty punch to get hit by. And it's so fast that if your hands aren't already up to defend, good luck doing anything other than taking it to the face. Head movement generally only works (well) against people who have slower reflexes - anyone who has fast hands will tag you pretty much whenever they want, as anyone who has watched top level boxing has probably noticed.

Great vid. I totally agree with everything you said. I'm a right handed fighter but I started fighting south paw mid way in my TKD and kickboxing years. I felt that I needed to be balanced and comfortable fighting in any stance. Just in case I got damaged in one side I would be able to fight in the other stance. But I digress, you had great points as it shows in your video.

I've been into this ever since I learned about Lomachenko, it's cool to learn Bruce Lee also thought the same. For bare knuckle, MMA or street fights where one strong jab can do so much damage and there's so few total punches per fight it's just logical.

I've been fascinated with Michael Bisping because he's the only example i know of a left-handed Orthodox fighter. One day will you explore that rare type?
@MMAShredded2 жыл бұрын
the JKD guy I sparred, Teddy, is a left handed orthodox fighter!
@OrionPax-h6d5 ай бұрын
Lomo uses he left to set up a right hook inside range and Tyson would notoriously fire a strong left hook from a southpaw stance but his footwork was so good you'd barely very brief switch step as it were
@sus4252 жыл бұрын
I’m a southpaw and I was always annoyed at how much worse my right side is in general, so from the start I was stepping through to orthodox to do more effective jabbing. It’s a very cool and useful concept.

There’s also SO much more open targets when you’re on an opposite stance and you can hit them while being further away from punching distance especially cause you can hand fight

Jeff it's not just lead hand. Don't forget the lead foot. The lead sidekick, and even lead leg round kick, hook kick, crescent and axe kick, technically have great advantages that can be explored due to the quicker nature of the position. Try those sometime. Lead front kick, sidekick, round kick, axe kick, crescent, and hook kick. From the JKD stance.

I had not known JKD before I applied this technique when I was young. I went to all other martial art schools like Muay Thai / Karate where I was taught to keep the strong hand behind the jabbing fist; but I just did not feel comfortable to do that. I am a right-hand but left-foot guy; and I think this is why I should not rely on any regular principle but instead switch my fighting stance and footwork at all times while fighting.

Greta stuff, so glad you have dug deeper into JKD. I figured you would dig it's theory on dominant aide forward and straight lead, lead hand.You took to that fast. And you were just in Rome.... Hmmmm were you filming Way of the Dragon 🐉 part 2 lol Seriously brother great video as ALWAYS 😃

Hi edward, sorry to give advise on so little to see but who knows.. i try: on what i see of your boxing style, maybe u should try having ur rear hand higher & close to u, to block or pary while relaxing and playing around with ur front hand( elbows tighten to ur chest) this should help gaining speed over all( block&counter , boxing with combo ect) . Thank u for reading me
@TheEliasNoel8 ай бұрын
Really appreciate seeing is in live action. Now if we can find a way not to leave that front leg open to leg kicks then we’d have a powerful combo here.

Strong hand lead was about the only thing I applied from a brief opportunity I had to train with a JKD "master" in my early 20's, and would later apply that to boxing/muay thai in sparring or a few amature fights. It would be something that would drive some instructors at the gym i trained at crazy, because they'd be like who is this guy to be switching from orthodox to southpaw, all the while I'm giving the majority of my sparring partners problems doing it, and certainly anyone who'd be closer to my actual level, but what it came down to for Muay Thai and Boxing was my strong hand (right) was very efficient for jabbing while for Muay Thai my stronger kicking side was off my back leg (right) so, and my left jab and lead left hook were both still solid. I'd use both stances at different times. Yet....again instructor's strongly discouraged against this because....hey your basics can never be good enough for some people....but hey good enough to take a beating from your pro fighters getting ready for pro fights or good enough to be expected to take whatever amature fights you can throw at me and go represent your gym...but God forbid i switch my stance because I know myself better than many instructors who think they are fight God's ever will. More people need to open up their mind like Bruce and not be afraid to try different things based on their own individual strengths and weaknesses that they know better than anyone.

@@kaceysonyobehind8615 I had 1 amature boxing fight when I was about 35 vs a strong kid who was about 25. I took the first 2 rounds of 3 which likely got me the decision as he cut me up with something nice in the 3rd round, but after the fight he told me he couldn't figure me out the first couple rounds switching from the southpaw to orthodox, and that slower start cost him in the end , my switching I believe got me the win. Had I just fought orthodox as any of my coaches/instructors wanted me to do I probably would have lost or had an overall tougher fight. Not that any of them could put that two and two together.

It's how I learned boxing, and also from teenage martial arts classes so I'm a southpaw fighting orthodox. Almost 40 years fighting, have landed many nice left hooks when opponent circling away from my right.

I feel fighting as a right handed southpaw helps me to not only have a good jab, lead hook, etc. But the added power I get on my left from having it as my power side helps it not be that weak lol. Also I kick alot better standing on my right leg and throwing my left.

Yo! Dabbled in Win Chun, but I believe JKD has the strong hand out front is because it is the bridging hand and once the left hand bridges over or traps, the right front strong hand is the finishing punch. JKD and Win Chun was not really meant for combat sport fighting where you have rounds to fight but to hit and injure as soon and fast as possible. Be first to hit and dominate. In tactical combat, what police and solders do, is the mind set you want to be in when training JKD and Win Chun. The same can be said about Arnis.

Nice to know you are getting in to Jeet Kune Do, to better understand the concept of JKD Striking practice the FOOT WORK alone with no striking, then practice the straight lead while using the FOOT WORK. Remember to whip it and snap it! The hand moves before the body a tenth of a second then it lands like a wrecking ball! Apply this to all JKD STRIKING.🍻
