Back in 2014, I was in the Army and they really started cracking down on styles worn by African American women. I had had my sisterlocks for two years at this point with no drama, but then suddenly I had to cut them off and mediately. I almost left the military. But succumbed to their demands and cut my hair. Been miserable ever since with weaves and extensions damaging my hair. But I just got my second set! I plan to keep these for the rest of my life! I love your video, new subscriber!

Sisterlocks is not a natural hairstyle, it is the way you choose to wear your natural hair, they styling comes after. I know some people who consider sisterlocks have a hard time understanding that. Many always ask me can they be taken down. If you go in to it wondering if they can be taken down, then you definitely aren't ready to get them.
@TunisiaAli6 жыл бұрын
That actually makes sense to me. It's a way you can wear your natural hair. I never thought about that, but it's a precise way to describe. Natural would imply, we had to do nothing and were that way naturally. Yes! The idea of trying to take these down is exhausting. I always said I'd likely just cut mine out. But I've seen people actually taking them down. Whew!!!
@godsflame26 жыл бұрын
Exactly. Your natural can exist the way it grows out of your scalp or you can choose to wear it a certain way,(Just like some naturals or AA in general like to wear their hair straight, pressed, or relaxed. But that's not a hairstyle, Just like Locks in themselves is not a hairstyle. Girl I had braid locks about 3 years ago, and I picked them out. It took me 2 months. It is not for the faint at heart!! I was interlocking them from he roots. I had 278 of them. I have over 500 and no way would I pick these out. Its exhausted and your fingers get ripped to shreds! lol.
@TunisiaAli6 жыл бұрын
@@godsflame2 oh boy! How in the world?? 2 months? Wow, I know me....I like to think I could do it, but the feeling like I wouldn't be getting anywhere would do me in! Sigh! What was the motivation to take them down? Did you lose a lot of hair, thinning, etc? Wow. 500 plus would take make 5 or 6 months. That would I would be potentially looking at. OMgosh! Whew!

Chan, I want to split one of my locks. Can you tell me What is the easiest way to take it out to do this?
@humandesignsimplified81015 жыл бұрын
A natural hair style in my opinion is hair that is not chemically treated. Loose, locs, or sister locs all have to be maintained. When it grows out of your scalp naturally, with out maintenance, it will be just matted hair. We always have to separate, twist, and plait our hair regardless, when it is untreated.
@stina84855 жыл бұрын
Just starting to watch the video but certainly, all the moments you mentioned about relationship to our hair - cutting it off, wearing it natural - all of it i found to be true too! I don’t pay for certain things so we put our money into what we value so that’s a great point that a lot of women don’t make when they make sister lock videos. They just say how expensive they are but don’t factor in that it’s all about what you’re willing to invest it. Loved this and you have a beautiful set of loc’s!! The sisterlocs consultant informed me that I have traction alopecia. I then went to a trichologist who informed me that I have that and a condition called CCCA (central centrifugal cicatricial alopecia) Besides the treatment, I can't wear wigs, plaits, nor cornrows!!! I had to cut my hair!!! It's been one week since I cut it into a short tapered style and yes it's freedom. Just get up, take out twists, moisturize and out the door! I just might not let my hair grow back, except for the situation on my scalp. CCCA is an inflammatory issue, so it's another red flag to change my eating.

I think the political issue with black women's hair is mostly black women who target other black women. Almost every black girl who gets targetted in school or a workplace its always another black women. The issue is how black women see their own hair. Most do not see there natural kinky state of hair as tame and neat. How you treat yourself is how people will treat you. Black women treat their hair like some nappy untameable mess that they have to constantly tame put under wigs etc. And the will complain about other black women who don't tame their hair. And majority of the reasons most choose to wear fake hair or straight hair? Because they say theyre hair is untamed it doesn't go with them. Its not for them. Its nit polished. Etc. No one is targetting black woman hair. Black women are targeting their own hair and the only group of people who need to cover it up almost constantly... Besides that locs are less racial and just a stereotype of it being dirty. Which is not true. We ALL praise straight or loose hair more than any other hair type and that includes black women. We set the record straight of who we are. And the majoirty make it clear. Through their actions and not their words what they prefer to wear and what they prefer not to wear.
@Spirituallyinitiatedandcrowned6 жыл бұрын
I think what you say is correct. We also have to consider the roots of this issue. It has happened all over the world where whites have colonized. As we were stripped of our resources, etc., and given everything from hair to psychological models, we learned to embrace the accepted norms of the majority race, or should I said the minority, but empowered race-- as a means of survival. For this reason and so so many others (I'm sure we could write a book), race has played a major issue and discrimination was and has been used to keep this subversive system in place. Self-hatred was learned; it was and has never been a part of the African diaspora. So, yes, it is now that we must reclaim our beauty and I believe that this is what natural hairstyles do for us. They move us closer to accepting ourselves, being ourselves, and establishing our own models of beauty. Although I prefer natural today, I havent been always. So, it's a journey to ourselves, as everything in life is. You are right! The more we embrace what is more 'us', the more others will as well. In this society, it has been many things that are seen as different by caucasians,--who have always been the ones to establish the norms. All others have assimilated. So the problem is larger than just within our own community. It didnt begin with us, yet we must embellish our situation today by first standing in our own personal power. This however does not discount the political battle that still wages on in uncountable employment environments where sisters are being told they must change their hair for more mainstream, acceptable hairstyles. This is still very common and activist fight this battle. There's even been legislation in numerous states to this effect. It's time out for all of this.
@elfinmordant33136 жыл бұрын
@@Spirituallyinitiatedandcrowned Yes but this has nothing to do with whites imposing things on blacks today. More commonly than not. The employer is usually amigious when it comes to race. Sometimes its a white man. Sometimes a black women. Every color in the rainbow. No one sees black hair as tame and something you should where out. Not even black people. Right now were pushing to be allowed to where our hair how we want. In all its kinks and glory but at the same time I highly doubt our attitude towards our own hair will ever change. If there was a pill to make our hair straight. 90% of black women would have taken it already. The only reasons perms are unpopular is becasue the outcome is generally distateful and the long term affects are again distasteful. It has nothing to do with being natural. At all. Black women have to constantly keep it in a blow dried state or manipulate the pattern to make it manageable. There hair isn't a freedom but a little style that is difficult for many. Most of every race sees there hair as a form of freedom and anything else as a form of style. Black women see there hair as humiliating to the point where you'll see so many little girls afraid to go outside with here hair. Or they want to cover it because it just doesnt look good to them. Lol. Even when black women do take care od there hair the majority of the time it is so they know they have length but they'll continue to cover it up 99% of the time. I personaly don't have any hope for black folks. Ill comtinue to love myself as a black person but I don't expect much from the majority of blacks. I love locks I love fros. But I refuse to feel locked and imprisoned that my hair is not good enough. And I need to be enhanced by doing something that isnt me. Maybe for fun? Sure. I love new styles. But wearing a style for months at a time or a wig all the time no longer is fun. Just a prison. A prison that black women want to have fun with. The attitude is. I might have kinky untameable hair but i might as well play dress up while I'm in prison. Freedom is very different. Freedom is not feeling like you havr to do your but you want to. Not being prison by a protective style. But I always will believe black women will still be in chains. Going to sallies getting there next pack of Malaysian haie finding new healthier ways to alter their hair texture and thats fine. Not all of us see our hair type as good. Its just sad to me. Sisterlocks is an easy way to attain that freedom to me. You'll notice that when you feel free from the baggage of feeling like you have to cover your hair. Styling your hair actually feels like a want. And sometimes you do it sometimes you don't. I got sisterloxks mainly because my mom kept trying to force me to hold onto damaged ends and i wanted to just shave my head off because I hated weaves and wigs and braids. It just wasn't me. So I asked for dreadlocks did it myself and she forced me to take it out so then we decided to go to sisterlocks. I still feel the urge to shave my head off. But I know my mother would hurt me lol. I grew up going out with my hair an absolute mess constantly. Although I did care about my appearneve I never gave it much thought. I was fustrated. My self esteem was extremely low. Especially when I had a girl look at me and flip her hair... Telling me if I'm jealous that I dont have her hair. To me the sole issue of the black community today is we don't treat our little girls hair properly and we train them to cover it. It makes you feel anxious insecure. Encourages bad hygiene. I'd rather see tamed black hair than see women constantly in weaves and wigs quite honestly. I want to see little mini afros. Big afros. Twist. Dreads. Etc. I want us to be gentle with our heads and have a sense of hygeine. All this crap has done is lower the self esteem of black women and it all starts with the little girl. We do it to ourselces and were the only ones who can get us out of it but rather than try to fix ourselves and help our children we focus on what other people think...so there will continue to be millioms of shaniqusd with ratchet hair patting their heads with who knows what build up lurks underneath that nonsense. I feel like I'm the only one who actually wants black pride. Our hair should be a norm. Every other race does styles but its not something you see in children not as much on teenagers. Adults often where their hair with a slighte change in color or they decorate their hair or play with it. Extensions are generally added hair to enhnce the hair they are born with. Sometimes they want a slight wave other times not. They can hate their straight hair its fine. But black women. All you see are extensions left and right. Teenagers? Improper extensions. Bad hygiene. Bad hair dayd everywhere. Willingness to look like a mess but afraid to wear a little afro. Black women can also hate their hair which is fine but dont get that other people dont like ur kinks either. Whites and other races see our hair as something that happens to them when they dont brush it for s long time... I can't say nothing though. I'm to tired of the black community. There hopeless. I'm a hater but I will see them go nowhere because they blame others and dont want to improve. They will only improve by the white guys help which is whatever. Black hair is simply a phase. Its not a normal thing. Its not us. Its a phase. If we ever improve to ever loosen kinky hair with health. Natural hsir movement will be nonexistent. I'm telling you. I go on youtube and I barley see kinky for sisyers getting attention but the minority of women who appesr black but actually are biracial get so many views and attention from girls with kinky ass hair. Smh. Any improvement is good I guess. Self esteem is nice but I have no hope that our hair will ever been seen as somehting good to us. In africa it is the same btw. In Haiti as well. Its worse than here I'd say.

Wow. I can understand your sentiments. I really can. AA are conflicted. You can travel to the deepest darkest parts of Africa and find women struggling with pennies to buy bleaching cremes and weaves. Clearly the youth today have little understanding as to why they embrace things that are not organically them. They inherited this transgenerationally. Its unfortunate they do not KNOW themselves. I think of my 2 girls who love their natural frosting, especially my 16 year old. Even I am learning a thing or 2 from her. She has her little natural hair channel. LOL. There IS a historical context. You've shared a lot. I sense tension there a well Hmmmmmmmm.... I imagine the pendulum swings yet again. Meaning we've had movements of black pride, etc.... I guess I feel things are changing somewhat based on what I see around me. Then again, most women today are into creatively expressing their vision of beauty, whether its makeup, surgery or whatever. It's a dense topic to dig into. In my circles, I sense more pride in our unique originality, but shackles are hard to break. Hopefully it will last. Times today are different. It's about personal responsibility and accountability to direct your life. For me, anyone still thinking that their life's trajectory will be enhanced by what others do will be disappointed. As a group, we have lost our cultural glue. This happened a long time ago. Some will say our cultural glue???? So, time will tell. I also feel that w elive in a world of illusion today. Everyone is materialistic and pretending. It's become quite the norm. I make an effort to accept people wherever they are in their awareness and don't take things personal. I see how we have evolved and de-evolved as a group. I accept that mankind in general has lost it's way and I strive for higher ideals. Whereas before, I was very political and ethnocentric, I give folks space today to be whoever and whatever they want. I work on myself to make the world a better place.

@@Spirituallyinitiatedandcrowned That's a very wise outlook. I was sort of going in that stage really. I would say I'm more in between. I use to be very ethnocentric but the dissapointment got to me so I am sort of accepting it but I guess slightly annoyed. When it comes to changes for me. I don't handle it well but I dont hold onto ideologies if I feel it makes no sense in my mind. I try to accept people as well in their journey. I don't see the point in bothering someone who relaxes their hair or likes it in a form or fashion because although their are psychological ways life effects us and pushes us to certain actions or viewpoints. But its still in my thoughts I guess. You seem like a very spiritual person. Anyways ill be subscribing.

Elfin Mordant That means a lot my friend. Thank you for thanking the time to connect with me and exchange ideas. This is what brings people together. At the end of the day, who cares about division right? It keeps us steeped in the past where we have absolutely no power. It also introduces discordant frequencies into our aura, destabilizes us, inhibits our momentum and serves no one. Sending love and light and reiki your way! Have a great day!

Thank You SO MUCH! I have locs and was considering combing them out and getting sister locs because I wanted more volume. I hate box braids and I have very fine thin hair like a baby, so I KNOW I will not like those parts in my head, My hair looks thick even thought it isn't. I like that there isn't much maintenance with my locs. I only have to spray them with water and oil. I wash them every 2 weeks and re-twist every 5wks. I am 1yr in but my hair is longer than most people who are 3 yrs in. My hair is very healthy. I would not want to band my hair, so now I know sisterlocs are not for me.

I'm in love with my sisterlocks, since 2005! Back then, I knew I was ready, nobody could tell me a thing about getting locs. It has been a wonderful journey! I try and explain to those who are considering getting locs that it will be an emotional, mental and spiritual journey! But YOU WILL KNOW when you're ready! I appreciate this information because it is so true especially, the part about having the "fresh look" I'm not a fan, Lol! Thank you Queen for enlightening us!

The cost of retwist is not bad at all. A sew in is over 200 for the install at a salon and that's minus the purchase of hair. I really like them,but I love changing my hair and sister locks are permanent, yes?

I love your videos and your hair and you! Question for you. I have done a great deal of research on SL and I have even taken the course. I am having my Sisterlocks installed next month and I love my Sisterlock Consultant but I was surprised that she feels it"s best to install the 4 point rotation in my very fine, thin, loose curl hair. My research has told me the 3 point allows more fullness but she makes a really good point that it will help to contain my loose curl with less slippage. Does this mean I will loose the fullness that the 3 point would give me. Please give me your insight! Much appreciated. Bless
@TunisiaAli5 жыл бұрын
Wow! Interesting. You are right I think in terms of fullness. She may be weighing the slippage etc. in favor of fullness. If your hair is medium length and not as short, ask her again. Over the long haul, you will likely appreciate more fullness over a little initial slippage. Let me know what happens. Thank you for reaching out. As the 4 reverse that I have tightened over time, it's now quite after 7.5 years. At about 5, I really noticed the compression. My hair was thick anyway, but I know for sure whatever you do, you will experience increased fullness overtime with SL as long as you take care of them.

There is a lady named Go D locs on Instagram. She did an interview with me on the channel last year. But she only does maintenance I think. I'm not 100 percent sure. Look in my description and get the DISCORD link. I just started building a loc community. If you post a thread text someone may know of a contact in CA. Search my channel for Dee Dee and and loctican keyword and it may bring up her information and video. Check the description there too! I wish I could point you to someone Tanisha.

Beautiful locs sister ♥️. I would do them this thin if I could find a ladies only facility as I'm in hijaab and in South Africa, here mostly men do locks. I've cut mine once before because I gave up, but now I do them myself and they're a little bit thicker. They're 2 years old this December, growing fast but dry and something unexpected happened just before I turned 35 this year, 4 grey hairs have popped out just out having at me, I'm not so chaffed about it even though I love people's salt n pepper hair strands. I lock them this way
@TunisiaAli3 жыл бұрын
Yes Sis! Embrace the gray. You probably look gorgeous. You could always consider installing them yourself or the next time you travel, get the install and just maintain them. You can train anyone to maintain them or you can easily learn to do it yourself.
@tomikacox3605 жыл бұрын
I was going to get locs so I wouldn't have to do anything to my hair. But now that you explained all the maintenance that go into it, I'm not gonna get.. I just don't want to have to do a lot to my hair. Thanks for such detailed explanations.
@blackbutterfly68725 жыл бұрын
Lol, yes sis when I first got them that was one of the benefits or so I thought🙄. Just as much work as a perm or natural 🤯 if not more.
@rhuleg094 жыл бұрын
If we follow the process that is explained by your certified sisterlocks installer then we won’t have slippage or it matting. We must give just as much time to looking after our hair just much when we deal with it in Afro. But I’m glad she said about education as I’m in education so I know it’s real for some facing discrimination like a friend of mine. But I love sisterlocks and I aim to get them done in October’s 2020

Yeah, thanks for reinforcing this. That's why I decided not to get Locs in general. 1. I dont know if I can to commit to a look. 2. While they generally are low maintenance since you only need to wash and retwist every month(or wash biweekly), I'm not one of those natural that can spend even close to 1000s on my hair every year. $70 a month is a lot. I know some places can charge even more than that to retwist.

You have a point. It's an investment. For me it saves me time and helps me.take the focus off of my hair.. This is invaluable to me..It is besT to consider what you know about yourself and what makes you comfortable.

Thank you for responding! One more question: I'm stuck in a wig/cornrow lifestyle. My hair is long underneath, but I'm tired of it and I'm starting to have breakage. Would I be able to wear wigs over the sisterlocks during the first year or so or would it be too bulky?
@TunisiaAli6 жыл бұрын
@@thescorpionstrikes Hmmmm....that's an interesting question. Without knowing your thickness, and length etc., it is hard to say. But for sure, you wouldn't want to get them and then have to braid them/tie them down to wear the wig. Since they would be settling, that would be ill-advised. But, I did wear a scarf the first few years and it didnt harm me at all. Once I would get home, I would take it off. But while wearing thescarf, my locks were longer, so I needed to pull them back into a LOOSE pony tail. It would have been possibly to much height for a wig, depending on the style wig. I hope this helps. Thank you for your commentary.

My scalp is very dry. I HAVE to wash my hair every 2 weeks, otherwise the dandruff is ridiculous. My hair texture is soft and light weight but oily. Do you think sisterlocs is a good idea for me? I've watched other videos stating to leave locs alone for 6 weeks and no moisture on hair. I know in 2 weeks my hair will itch and be dirty.
