TB back in the mid-70s an old man taught me a trick on how to get line twist out of my spinning reels. At the end of the day take your lure off and run about 50 yards of line off behind the boat with the big motor running in idol. When you get the line ran off flip the nail and just drag the line behind the boat for a hundred yards or so and just crank it back in. Then the next time you go fishing your line will be twist free. Now I’m the old man passing that trick down. Love your videos.

There are pros/cons to any setup. I was braid-to-fluoro for almost everything except crankbaits, but now I keep some straight fluoro on utility rods where I need to switch baits frequently. As a kayak angler, braid-to-fluoro can help to offset the give from the boat itself (assuming you don’t want to upsize rod). When you set the hook, the movement of the boat actually absorbs a lot of the shock. Multiple ways to make it work🤙🏼

I like using braid-flouro on my finesse stuff because the lighter braid allows to cast lightweight lures out farther than if you were using straight flouro.

One thing I do is have at least a 15-25ft leader. Reason is one, I much prefer having the leader line inside the spool when fighting fish up close. The other is it'll give me enough line to re-tie is needed.

Braid to leader is amazing in my opinion especially for a budget angler because not only does it last longer it also can make a budget rod feel like a lot nicer rod because the braid adds sensitivity and crispness that is found in high end rods

First and foremost, I love your videos. I’ve been watching you for years. I didn’t read through the comments and I’m sure someone has already said something to you, but just in case. The line twists on spinning gear does not occur from the drag. It occurs when the person reels and the fish is already pulling drag. Thank God for all the” and the sun is just starting come out over the tree tops” moments I’ve spent in my life. Love you brother, your truly a great teacher.

John Terrell you are 100% correct on line twist. It occurs when the drag is to loose and the fish is running taking line out and the fisherman keeps reeling at the same time. It will definitely put twist in your line. As a kid I learn this the hard way.😅

I agree just getting into bass fishing seriously. But yea even I knew that. I'm originally a catfisherman, but yea most times that happens from what you just described. Braid to leader here. Like a lot of commenters, I'm a budget angler. I don't have a bunch of different rods and reels for each technique (yet) so I spool up my all purpose baitcaster (13 Fishing 7.3:1) with 40lb braid and then tie on 12, 15, 17lb leaders depending on what I'm doing. I have a couple of spinning rods and it's pretty much the same: 15lb braid to 8 or 10lb leader. I don't have the cash or time to be stripping line and respooling every time I want to switch baits. One day I hope to learn that FG knot. Until then, I'm crushing it with a double uni knot.

that knot shouldn't have any gaps in between each wrap of the braid. if your knot is going through your guides while under tension, or even when there is no tension, your guides can cause the braid to slip around and come closer together, which adds slack, causing the knot to become loose and either slide to a point where it will unravel, or slide off your leader entirely. always cinch your knots down tight with your fingers until there aren't any gaps folks!

A lot of people worry about bass seeing the braid or having an extra knot but fly fishermen have been catching trout this way for decades. And they use 4 lb line with more knots and catch bigger fish that have better eyesight in clearer water. I only use braid to fluoro on my spinning rods now.

Trout fishing is done with TAPERED line in Old fashion way. The (thinner) end is 4 lbs(0,12 mm thick) and this is where you tie your hook (wet or dry fly) the other (thicker) end can be 20 or 30 lbs ( and 3 mm thick) that end is pierced with a needle that holds the mainline after you’ve poked it trough it’s tied around the (tapered) Nylon leader.

I fish a lake that has bass and trout. I use straight braid. I can't tell you the hundreds of trout I have caught on a Texas Rig with 65 pound braid. It's not the line its the action of the lure. I never use straight mono, fluoro or other type clear line. There's no reason to. The braid I have on my 3 most used reels is 3, 5 & 5 years old and I fish those rods 4-6 times a week for 8 months of the year. Hell, some of the 5yr old braided line is almost white>gray from being bleached out by the sun. I just take a mark-up pen and blacken the last 5ft or so to Fluoro/mono. As for knots, Double-Uni. Haven't had a break in years, literally. The only time it fails is when a buddy/family uses one of my rods and wind nests it with a 1/2oz+ lure on the end and it will give out. Other than that 15lb braid > 10lb Fluoro just hauled in 20 Striped bass 19-29 inches in moderate current in just the last week. 10lb braid>8lb Fluro 7 bass 5-9lb+ on 3/8 hair jigs, Yo-Zuri popper and flukes. I use Japanese fluoro, their the only ones that actually test the line strength and it always matches lab/home testing. the others seen to take a 15lb line and call it 12lb and 20 and call it 15 or something. If the Japanese call it a 10lb line, it's a f'ing 10lb line.

Totally agree with you Tyler. The one thing I do differently is top water. As I do a lot of twitch, pause and shake the rod top retrieves with cicada type lures here in Australia, I've switched to a copolymer leader as it floats. It has all the advantages of fluro as in its tough and is almost as invisible. Fluro sinks and after a long pause it will pull the lure downwards ruining the presentation.

I'm still dealing with it some. I've set the hook & the leader breaks off right at the knot. 10# braid to 8# fluorocarbon. That's how I fish the lake by my house. Monofilament has too much stretch. When I fish top water baits, I tie directly to the braided line. Doesn't effect the detection of the line but I am fishing early morning or sunset. I'm going to try a 25 ft leader this Thursday morning. I was leaning towards it before I saw this but now it's going to happen. This year I've been on hefty size bass. Most are around the 5lb. mark & alot are caught on finesse baits & Ned rigs. Thanks for sharing this video. Helps this old man from changing my mind so much. Keep your line tight and again, thank you

My best friend who got me into fishing beat the FG knot senseless into me. He's braid to fluorocarbon on every spinning and casting rod he owns. But I'm lazy and go straight fluorocarbon LOL. It's just easier. After 1 year of braid on a spinning rod that I caught multiple Chinook salmon on it had a lot of line twist even on the braid. I do my best not to reel when drag is engaged. But it definitely twists whenever drag is going out. Fishing light braid to light main line on a spinning rod for big salmon gives you a line twist sooner than later no matter what. I appreciate the greater sensitivity. Hearing braid go through the guides of a rod is one of the best sounds on Earth. Even though it's better, I'm just lazy LOL

I mainly use spinning gear for skipping Senkos and Neds, etc. I use 15# Power Pro slick8 braid to 8-12# mono. I came up with my own combo of knots that I can attach the two in about a minute. It sounds and looks goofy but slides through micro guides and honestly very rarely breaks. If I am snagged and pull hard and straight the line will break at the hook and not the two line connection. Now I think a contributing factor may be because I use mono (four foot leader) which is more forgiving than IMO brittle flouro. I tie an improved clinch knot loosely around my finger five or so wraps. That creates a loop. Take the braid and tie a palomar knot to that loop. Tighten down palomar. Wet mono and tighten down improved clinch. Trim and ready to fish. As said, not the smoothest knot but does not hinder a cast.

Great video, Tyler. I used to use braid to fluoro on most of my rods, but as I've been upgrading my equipment I have been using braid less and less. Exactly! Manufacturers actually pay less for the smaller guides and in turn now we cant take advantage of braid to flouro while we continue to pay higher prices for "good" rods! What a serious shame cause the advantage of better sensitivity from braid is now out the window if you can't hide the line from the fish and with no decent way to run a leader you're jacked!!

Otherwise, depending on the rod and reel, I use straight 65lb braid, twelve to 15 or more fl, or plain mono at anywhere from 2lbs to 12-17lbs. I do still manage to catch a fish on occasion without over complicating things. Use a rod and reel, a cane pole, some line of some kind with a hook tied to it. Have used braid with guides’ rods and one time got a real bad knot somehow, who knows how, when I tossed it and I think the hook got gummed up in the line on the cast. I remember one day I was fishing a popper on braid to mono and was killing them, unfortunately I broke off and had to retie a leader, well, I forgot my mono back at home and all i had was flouro. I tried it, this was really clear Ohio strip mine water so I wanted something other than straight braid, and because the flouro sinks it would sink straight down on the pauses and get tangled in the front treble. Sup Tyler. Great info. I just use florocarbon. I tried the braid to floro, but never got knot perfect, so lost lot of 4lb+ bass. My last cast is just with 1/2 oz weight to get any twists out. But I'm in RI so those bass are rare lol.ty tc

I’ve had a reel with braid for 5 years now. I keep it in the dark when not in use. To yozuri leader. Never break off anymore I have to cut unless it’s like a sheepshead or a shark, metal something like that.

There have been many positive advancements in fishing rod's, reels and lures over the past 40 some years , but one that has made it so confusing for most people has been floral carbon line. There were many things said about it initially that were simply not true. I will only use it on a big cast real Or as a leader on my braided line when using a spinning real. Anything heavier than the diameter of a good 8 pound test line is going to create problems on a spinning real unless you have one with a big spool. I still will go back to a good mono line Many times to avoid all the problems with floral carbon . Funny how we could catch fish prior to floral Carbon. A lot of the changes to rod's, karma and knots have had to come about because of the problems floral presents. Not worth it for the new angler.

I only have one casting set up that’s straight fluoro and I hated it. But that’s because I’ve been using braid to fluoro so long. I figured I’d give it a shot like the pros but didn’t like it at all. I use the Alberto knot and haven’t seen any difference between going braided main line or fluoro main.

I understand the reason, I just really struggle to tie the knots needed to do it so I just fish straight line whatever I'm using. I struggle doing it when not on the water I know it would be even more difficult in my kayak. I practice and would like to save the money but hell I waste a lot practicing. Any suggestions?

I use the Albright knot on my rigs with braid to flouro/ mono. It's easy to tie and I use a drop of super glue to reinforce my tie. With some practice I can swap leaders in less than a few minutes. Hope this helps.

Love your straight forward information videos an dthis was another good one. I wasn't clear as to how you wish your jerkbaits with your baitcasters is it braid with a fluoro leaders? Kindly note that Salt Strong has done comparative tests of the abrasion resistance of mono vs. braid and the mono came out tops. Also I think the invisibility of braid is over-rated and it becomes an advantage one the line is not silhouetted on or near the surface.

I use two rods. One is a light power spinning rod and the other is a medium power spinning rod. I was told to use light line something around 6lb flouro (which I am currently using) I'm confused on what pound line to actually use. I always hear different answers. I usually use a wacky rig on the light power rod and I'll use anything else on my medium power rod such as jerk baits, spinner baits, top water, etc. So what pound line should I use? Also, I hear that flouro and mess with the action on top waters since the line sinks. I was thinking about using a leader for my top water. What kind of line and pound should I use and how long should the leader be?

🤔🧐Rod power and rod action are not the same thing. There are no heavy action rods, only heavy power, action is slow, moderate, fast, etc... love your videos but this is something thats really quite simple and that I hear far too much and it confuses new anglers... or anyone really. Not trying to be argunentative, you're still in the top 5 fishing channels i watch and i rarely miss a video. Also I think im backwards, I started bass fishing with braid to flouro or mono on everything, now I've been working in some straight flouro for a couple years and im a big fan for certain baits or situations. Also have 1 set up with straight mono that I use for small topwaters mostly, but it also has another use I don't really want to mention here😉

Hey bud! Love your content! I have a question for you. My wife cannot throw a baitcaster so I am buying her another spinning rod/reel and need something for her to be able to throw a wider variety of baits including some heavier swim baits. I bought her a Dobyns Sierra SA704SF MH/F. The line rating says 10-20lb. 1/4-1oz lures. Does the same line weight recommendations apply to braid as well? Thanks!

I use one rod length. Granted I can tie the knot quickly so when it gets low I just re-tie. My problem with long leaders is it can catch casted line as it’s leaving the spool. So I try to keep a shorter leader. I will use a longer leader when I need something to get deep.

So I’m just starting bass fishing and I don’t know what I should fish with my spinning reel setup (hasn’t gotten here yet)… I bought a *Shimano Nasci 2500 FC and a Shimano Sellus 7.1 Medium/Fast rod.* Guy from work said I can do whopper plopper top swimbait, however I will be bank/shore fishing and want something I can switch to that won’t get caught up in vegetation in the water. Those deep divers look amazing but, I’m assuming those are for deeper open waters on a boat… what other swimming lures can I use with a spinning reel setup. I like the idea of casting and retrieving and using some finesse to catch a hungry aggressive fat boy… Also should I just get fluorocarbon being a brand new bass fisher?

I mainly fish in ponds. I throw weightless plastics: senkos, lizards, and crawdads. Have had good success. Also floating Rapala minnows that swim shallow. Twitch on the surface and bass love it. It's hard to throw lures in neighborhood ponds because they are choked with weeds, except early in the season.

I've been very successful on using a FG knot for all my spinning gear. But when I try for a short leader pitch and flip set up on a baitcaster I've always lost the knot and broke off. How many times do you wrap your FG knot for baitcasters? I normally do 22-25 total wraps spinning applications.

There’s almost no downsides to braid to leader. Fluoro guys are just scared of the FG knot. Us guys that fish saltwater are comfortable with the knot and are reaping the benefits. The only times I’m using straight fluoro are some crankbaits or jerkbaits (even then I still prefer to back with braid and FG to a 30’ leader of fluoro) and full fluoro on my casting reels when I fish in 30-40’ of visibility in the great lakes and even the sight of a braided line can spook some fish.

Feider’s FG method kinda sucks, tying an overhand knot in the leader line defeats the purpose of such a slim knot. “Briggsy FG tutorial” is the best way to tie it, 16-20 wraps, 2 half hitches and the rizzuto finish. If I can tie it on a kayak in 2’ rolling waves guys on bass boats have no excuse

I use braid-to-fluoro almost all the time. It tangles waaayyyyy less when the line gets tip-wrapped, or if literally anything happens. It prevents braid from snapping, gives me a more elastic fighting profile, and it can withstand the teeth of snakehead very well. I typically run a 30lb mainline to a 40lb fluoro leader and a 40lb mainline to a 60lb fluoro for giant snakehead fishing in the tropical jungle where i'm from

I get a kick when people who use straight Fluro on their baitcasters because fish can see line. But they all say braid to leader is important on their finesse setups. So picky fish don’t see line? Idk I use braid to fluro on everything but glide baits. I want the little stretch there because i suck

Depends on the knot you want to use. FG knot works best with the braid being a smaller diameter then the leader so it can dig into it. I’m using 8lb braid to 20Lb fluro the 8lb braid actually breaks at 22lbs so I’m like why knot lol
