I've got an entirely different take on the Sorcerer, and I'm going to get on my soap box, because it's my favorite class. Sorcerers are not magic incarnate. That's not the best role for them to play. There is a trope that is well represented in storytelling, but underrepresented in D&D. A void that Sorcerer is perfect to fill. Sorcerers make the best Everyman. Think about it. Every other class, the character had to do something to earn their powers or abilities. Even Warlocks typically have to choose to make their deals. D&D characters are basically super heroes (or villains), and yet the most common super hero origin is largely missing from D&D. I'm not talking about personal tragedy motivating them to heroics. I'm talking about an accident of fate gifting a normal person with incredible abilities. People focus on Sorcerers being born magical. That's lame. The X-men would be lame without the prejudice narrative that is intrinsically linked to them. But Spider-man, the Flash, the Hulk, the Fantastic Four, I could go on. Regular people blessed with extraordinary abilities, who either leap or are thrown into adventure as a result. A level 1 Sorcerer should still be figuring things out. They aren't masters of their domain. They're regular people trying to get by in an extraordinary world. The limitations of the mechanics feed into that narrative. They aren't studied, or endowed, or trained. They have a few things they've learned how to do, and they have to modify those things to fit the situations that they are in. They're making shit up as they go, and that's why their spells are pliable. Mechanically, they could use a boost. I think the original idea for the class was to have fewer spells, but more ways to utilize them. Giving them origin spells defeats that intention, even if it does make the class more viable. The class as a whole would be better if they received their capstone ability much earlier. Getting 4 sorcery points back every short rest is underwhelming for level 20.
@reloadpsi
@reloadpsi 3 жыл бұрын
Sorcerers are at their best when they take just a level or two elsewhere to round out that somewhat limited applicability, and I think that's exemplified best in what you just said about how they should be people who are unprepared and still figuring out what's happening to them. This means their adventuring experience can be what trains them for that dip into another class, although there's plenty of reward in using sorcerer levels as most, if not all, of your build. The transmute spell option added to Tasha's made the class look much more interesting to me.

Exactly! I think the roleplay opportunity could be great! Imagine if you, not a character, just you, started making things happen without trying. You’d be terrified, but you’d probably also feel obligated to go use your powers for something. If you want to roleplay a character who didn’t choose the adventuring life but had it chosen for them, then sorcerer is probably your best bet.
@urfork1

i think the biggest problem with sorcerer is that they get nothing between level 6 and 14. if you're playing through those levels, you get basically nothing on level up, and a third metamagic at 10, when you've already got p much all that you need from the first two, and not enough sorcery points to make it worthwhile. meanwhile other classes get things like mystic arcanum, patron or arcane tradition features, improved divine smite, an aura and a subclass feature, magical secrets and expertise, etc. etc. the fact that all comparable classes get a subclass feature makes them feel different, as they have major class features added. Meanwhile all sorcerers play the exact same between 6th and 14th level. If they moved their capstone down to maybe level 11, and the new metamagic to level 8 or 9, and gave them a new capstone it would probably fix the class, or at least bring it in line with some of the other classes that feel better to play. i just don't feel like I'm getting more powerful when I level up between those levels, especially on levels where all I get is a spell slot and a sorcery point, not even a new level of spells.

I played a draconic bloodline sorcerer, and even used my couple levels of warlock to emphasize the flavour of sorcerer I was playing. My character was the great-grandson of a silver dragon, but otherwise entirely human. His goal was to join his great-grandmother and BECOME a silver dragon. How do dragons fight? They are dangerous at range with their breath weapons (sorcerer magic), but they are also very deadly in melee combat as well. I took 2 levels in hexblade warlock for the medium armour and shield proficiencies, some invocations, and access to the Armor of Agathys spell for all that combos with the Draconic Bloodline features and higher-level spell slots (and added the Crossbow Expert feat so that I could cast my spells without disadvantage in melee range, and the Tought feat for added survivability). By the time I got to the higher levels, I had +2 half-plate armour, a +3 shield, and a staff of power; this character *looked* like a full-on dragon knight, but was primarily a sorcerer. His endgame was to reach 19th level (where he got his 9th level spell slots) and acquire a scroll of True Polymorph to *become* an adult silver dragon, a goal he ultimately failed. He got the scroll, but was forced to use it to save the city in the final battle with the campaign's BBEG. He wasn't able to maintain concentration for the duration, and lost his permanent transformation. His epilogue was using his vast resources he acquired adventuring up to 20th level to go searching for another scroll.

The lack of flexibility due to less number of spell known is also the reason why YOU are magic. It is a part of you, like how your hands is a part of your body. For my Good attunef Divine soul Sorc (tho secretly evil), he is divine magic incarnate. I took Tasha's Hideous Laughter and reflavor the spell to fit the name "Grovel", no laughter but it still have the same mechanics. Subtle spell is a blast for this character. Sorcerer sometimes puts people off because it’s mechanically weaker than the wizard - so people who play a sorcerer feel less powerful alongside a wizard - I like sorcerers but feel like their mechanics clash with their flavor, so in my sessions, I give all subclasses a spell list like the aberrant mind or clockwork soul sorcerer - I reduce the spell slot creation cost - and, I give them more sorcery points - doing so lets them play around with their spells and spell-slots more, hopefully making them more of an embodiment of magic - living arcane energy - giving spells to each subclass also builds on that idea of flavor specific to a theme your mentioned each subclass has/should have

Maybe giving it the same Arcane Recovery as wiz's do would be just enough? I feel like recovering magic energy faster would be something of an arcane embodiment would do more than a student, who in turn would be advantaged by the number of spells they know and the possiblity to learn just about any spell in any domain, outside flavoring constraints I like to think of them in terms of theory and practice, for wiz's and sorcerers respectively. Even though they both have both sides, Wizards have to work harder on the theory side and use their spells wisely, being an INT-based class, whereas the sorcerer have to work harder on the practice side to manifest/harness/control their magic better, kind of like a willpower fight between them and their power, hence the CHA-based class. Funnily enough, I've always considered wizards really bland because of sorcerers, we had reversed opinions up until you got the sorcerer!

@@PlayYourRole all of them or a set amount? I was thinking about giving them something like their proficiency bonus in sorcery points per short rest - it might be stepping on the warlock a little bit with spell slot conversions functionally giving you slots of a short rest, but for some reason the wizards can already do it, so it wouldn’t be without precedent

I think there are two main factors that make a Sorcerer distinct, one which you touched on and just barely missed and the other from a mechanical standpoint that you glossed over. The first aspect is that sorcerers embody magic, which you did touch on, but I think your specific conclusion of them being embodiments of things like necrotic, fire, ice, and wind is off the mark by a hair’s breadth. Sorcerers are embodiments of things within the D&D world that are inherently mystical in nature; dragons are beings of pure magic, wild magic is ruled by fate and chance, storms are omens of powerful beings and events, celestials are beings from the outer planes that influence our existence, and so on. As an example of this, I once played a sorcerer that was raised by a dragon, was made magical by its ambient magical nature, and taught by that dragon on how to harness that power. The character’s casting was a hodgepodge of wizard technique (verbal, somatic, and material components) and controlling natural functions (proper breathing, harnessing emotion, etc.) because humanoids aren’t naturally magical enough to not have focuses, but the magic was stemming from a natural source. To cast something like Burning Hands, they still needed to form the hand gesture (hands out, splayed fingers, connected by thumb and forefinger) but would exhale through the fingers in a particular fashion to create the gout of flame. The spell was an expression of the magic they embodied, mimicking a lesser breath weapon through a functionally similar spell, because they’re a direct expression of that magic in the world. The wild magic surge table is a baked-in example of this philosophy too, but I think all of the subclasses would benefit from this sort of thought on how a sorcerer’s magic is expressed because of where they got their magic from. The second aspect that I believe is important but was not touched on is how the sorcerer fits into arcane magic as a whole. Wizards study magic and so must follow all the rules. Warlocks cheat their way into power and so can only turn the magic tap on or off. Bards integrate tricks and secrets from other casters in order to be as flexible as possible. And sorcerers embody magic, constantly using their raw power to break the rules of magic! This is seen throughout the class, the quintessential example being sorcery points. Target's just out of range? No, they're in range because my magic reaches farther. Components? How about I just not wave my hands around and spout gibberish that gives my plan away. My spell only affects one target? Naw, I want both of them targeted. I’m out of spell slots? I think I’d rather just fireball instead. This even extends to a lot of the subclass abilities. Care to control the probability of your dice rolls with constant advantage and exploding damage dice? Maybe access to an entirely different spell list? Darkness is a great spell, but maybe I should see through it? Sorcerers are constantly breaking the rules of magic (and the game) through their abilities on a mechanical level and I think it’s core to their class conception in 5th edition. Overall, I think this video was really well throughout, much like the rest in this series. Anything that can get the gears turning to form a response like the one above is well worth anyone’s time. Keep up the awesome work!

try giving her some references that might inspire her, even if they dont seem like artificer at first glance; for example, jimbo from treasure planet is a good one imo. Doesn't seem like much, but he repairs the crazy droid, the arm of the cyborg, figures out the tech map and makes 2 hover boards. Also (obviusly) ironman is the classic armorer artificer, with pretty cool ideas for flavoring. Also, advising for u as an artificer DM, just like a wizard gains spells, try giving her schematics to make magic items. It's not mandatory like the wizard spells that have to find them to get them, but it helps to learn how to make stuff and get inspired in the mean time. Also, advise her to think about what she knows as her tools; like an artificer that has an herbalism kit probably could also know something like what region they're in because of a specific plant that grows there. It also helps to think in terms of roleplay how crazy anyone in this class has to be; remember this is a world where magic usesr become demigods and this is someone who said "nah, i wanna learn as much as wizards and then experiment withe the world". imo opinioon, as the wizard is fascinated by magic to a level that they study a lot, the artificer is like the opposit; so unimpressed by magic that they want more... "creating a giant ball of fire that inscinerates a bunch of people? nah, lets make a cannon that lets you throw several of those at the time"... "a belt full of components that let you conect to the weave? why not make an armor out of those components so that you can do magic all the time istead". It also helps to think of unknown legends: Someone had to make the genies vessel, or write the book of the damned; this are artificers, not wozards who do that. Hope this helps, this is my favorite class, so if you want to discuss it

My gaming group, when looking at starting our current campaign, was talking about doing an Elder Scrolls setting (Arena timeline, for those interested). I didn't know what I wanted to play, beyond a magic user of some stripe. So I was scrolling through the books, looking for ideas, when I found her in Tasha's. When my eyes lit upon the Clockwork Soul, Falena, daughter of the Clockwork City in Dunmer skin, came to life in my head. My own little Clockwork Girl, fully formed and looking to earn her way back home through her deeds. The Dm is a Jerk, and decided that Sotha sil is actually her father, but that came later in the story. And you're right. The flavor of the Sorcerer is that they're born to it, and the sub-classes are where they shine. There's more freedom to them when you start to think about where the magic comes from. I have another sorcerer in my head that I would love to play somewhere who was born in a storm at sea, and that storm lives in her veins, barely controlled. You can't do that with any of the other classes, except perhaps a bit with Druid, but they're more limited. And definitely make that supplement. Maybe look at the subclasses and tailor some of them to be more in line with those flavors. it could be fun!

The Tasha's Sorcerers are the first official subclasses that are not just "worse version of wizards". They tend to know more spells than a wizard can prepare along their leveling arc, and they have a limited ability to get spells outside their class. They truly, legitimately, bring the full package of "flavor" plus "good character". Before that, I would tell anyone at a RAW table who wants to play sorcerer to just play as a bard, druid, or wizard instead and reflavor your character to be a sorcerer in-universe, because you'll have a better time. (I mean I wouldn't because the tables I play at all give every sorcerer bloodline spells and 2 extra metamagics at 6th level) For crying out loud sorcerers still need arcane focuses, because god forbid their mechanics ever back up their flavor lol - thats why the two new ones are SO GOOD, the mechanics enhance the flavor of the class and make you a force to be reckoned with

I always thought flavour is easier aspect to arrange with DM which confused me to see some people focused on basic flavour. I am afraid if I am being bias, but I am not sure if Sorcerer's subclasses (except for Divine, Aberrant and Clockwork) changes play style like subclasses from other classes.

sorcerers desperately need origin spells. Instead of going back to earlier supplements, Tasha's only gave 2 sorcerous origins that have them. That is a very stupid decision from wotc. Outside of those 2, access to the cleric spell list is teh biggest impact a subclass has, couple that with the other amazing level 1 ability of Favored by the Gods, and Divine soul was easily king of the hill before those 2. But you are right, outside of them, nothing much happens. Draconic WANTS to be a blaster, but doesnt give enough support for it. Wild Magic wants to be random, but with having to roll a 1 on a d20 for every levelled spell, multiple sessions can go by without wild magic triggering at all. (also bend luck 2 sorc points for 1d4 change is a very poor trade) Storm is a hodge podge of things loosely held together by theme Shadow is trying at least. Subclasses have way too much gap between features. 1 and 6, 6 and 14. Entire campaigns can go by withou you getting the next thing from your subclass. Also doesnt help that many subclass things say "here have flight", making them feel more same-y. If anything, metamagic makes them unique and different from each other, because that has more effect on how you "force" teh weave into doing what you want it to do, and those offer you more ways to express character

@@PlayYourRole I am sorry for my poor wording. I can see you have really tried to give reasons to play Sorcerer and I highly commend you. I hadn't realized why sorcerer was my favorite class until this video made it clear, I love the flavorful possibilities. From a lawful evil clockwork soul politician whos all about using the law to get what they want, to a chaotic neutral abberant mind sorcerer who grew up in the feywild and subtly manipulates and even terrifies people to get their way, you really can do a lot with sorcerers. I mean, some of the subclasses (like abberant mind) can be almost completely reflavored, thanks to switching out spells from the subclass to other spells of the same school (like the fey sorcerer using abberant mind to get enchantment spells from the other classes) I do agree that the class it a bit lackluster in some areas (level 6-14 where you get nothing at all) but that's time to flavor yourself into almost a training montage where you go from knowing that you have powers to mastering them. idk, but now I wanna write up a new sorcerer and give it the most off the wall subclass in a way that works.

Most sorcerers just have the weakness of spells known. They just don't know many while the wizard might have a spell for every situation the Sorc just doesn't and this makes people feel like its kinda meh. yeah it has some advantages like Con saves as a class and charisma is a better outside skill than INT. Metamagic does not do enough to make it stand out in my opinion. Now like you mentioned this class is flavour maybe if it got spells the wizard or any other class just couldnt cast (outside of chaos bolt) it would make for an intresting class.. atm I am playing a wizard and we have a Warlock/Sorc multiclass in our group and it makes for some great chemistry like my wizard being jealous she can just do stuff without understanding anything and her not understanding why I care so much about learning it in the first place when you can just naturally do it or make a pact to do so (as her character just thinks everyone can do stuff like that).

Currently playing a clockwork soul sorcerer. The flavor IS what makes it. Build. Upgrade. Repair. (He's pretty much a buff bot for the party or battlefield control character since I'm playing with less experienced players) Barnabus was an Artificer of Sharn in his past life. Now reborn in this new world as a clockwork soul sorcerer. Little out there for my tastes honestly, but the DMs setting required all of us to be "reincarnated souls of a different class than we were in life". His previous life was one of study and experimentation, but in this new one power flows through him raw and infinite. Things that would once require hours of work done in an instant. It's been a lot of fun sorta blurring the lines between science and magic, SciFi and Fantasy, Sorc and Arti. It also helps a lot that the TCE Sorc options add the extra spells. Honestly, for anyone that played Sorc pre TCE and found it limited, just house rule in a spell list for each subclass similar to the ones in TCE. Just one of many examples of classes or subclasses that are "fine" if you just take the time to "modernize" them.

I think the core fantasy of the sorcerer can also be to just embody the idea of natural giftedness and talent. For some reason, whether by blood or blessing or complete accident, this character has unusual abilities and power they don't truly understand. Magic comes easy to them, but that can make their life hard in a different way. I'm playing a divine soul sorcerer, chosen by a goddess and blessed before birth. This has led to many tensions with their family and home, and they eventually ran away from home to get away from the pressures that come with being naturally gifted. It can be very othering at times, and as someone who was always the "gifted kid" when I was little, it feels good to play this out and find power in natural talent.

I started playing a Wild Magic sorcerer who grew up in Gnomengarde which is steeped in Wild Magic, rather like tea. She leans into the cheerful chaos she grew up with and most of the wild magic effects have been beneficial. Even that Wild Magic Fireball meant we didn't have to fight anyone else and my party all carry health potions for a very good reason. The cantrips are the only spells she has complete control over (thus no wild magic escaping) and Prestidigitation and Mage Hand can be fabulous tools for chaos in and of themselves. I'm having fun playing her.

I'm currently playing a draconic-descended dwarven sorcerer. One of a line of black dragon sorcerers, my character is actually a spy. He uses his sorcerer powers to accomplish his missions. Kind of like an Arcane Trickster rogue but coming in from the other direction. The treasure he gathers is information to help his Dwarven Black Dragon cult. Basically, he's all flavor. I've adapted any elemental cantrips to be acid cantrips (with the DM's permission and help, of course). As you say, it's about the flavor. Acid magic should be at his fingertips, literally at times. I'm finding him lots of fun, so your video rang much truer than so many others who denigrate sorcerers. And now, thanks to your video, I know why. Thanks!

Game mechanics aside, the sorcerer presents a LOT of roleplay and character building opportunities. Where did they get their power? Did it manifest early in life? Or did it violently emerge when they came of age? How does your character feel about their magic? Is it a gift or a curse? How has she (and those around them) coped with their magic? How has he managed (or not) to keep it under control? There are so many things to think about to flavor not only your character as a concept, but also your character as a person and how they develop as they play. I also just like the concept of a character that takes a more intuitive approach to magic rather than the methodical/studied approach of a wizard. A character that approaches magic more like an artist rather than a scientist.

My current sorcerer is Divine Soul sorcerer, but not for wanting to be a Cleric or Paladin. She was raised in the Church of Auril, and in doing a trial of faith, she was reborn a Tiefling after dying on the mountain in a blizzard. However, Auril sought to give her great gifts for her faith, and though her life was full of steadfast prayer, she had no previous connection to magic. By being reborn of ice, she had the ability to transcend the others around her, and in doing so committed apostasy. And... she was 11 at the time, 15 by the time the campaign starts. That's kind of the vibe I want for her roleplay wise. A gifted kid who alienated people around her, and alienates even the Wizard of the party, given he had to study for a decade to get his magic. She's influenced by her connection to Arril and the emotions of a teenager. Additionally, given she was raised in a Church of an evil goddess, she's not against doing heinous things because she doesn't know better. She's drawn daggers in calm situations, flipped out on an NPC who wasn't helping her, and killed an innocent creature in sacrifice. It's only by her interactions with the party that she can see she can rely on others to become stronger and more upright, and even if Auril granted her these powers, that doesn't mean she is beholden to the goddess.

Just started playing an aberrant mind sorcerer and I'm flavoring him as a full on psionic rather than a magic user, making him more Jean Grey than Cthulu. For example invisibility doesn't actually make him invisible, instead he just manipulates the minds of those who look in his direction so they ignore him. Or fireball, instead of a mote of fire exploding he uses his telekinetic powers to warp and twist a point in space until it rips and explodes in a firey blast.

If you want your sorcerer to feel powerful, then make a strong build around a sorcerer either with paladin or warlock. I once played a sorlock whose body was changed by the shadowfell after getting trapped in it at a young age. He was raised by the Raven Queen and eventually became her warlock. The idea was to be able to snipe from a quarter mile away and he was powerful. Or play a sorcadin who is literally descended from a god and made an oath to that god. The sorcerer is such a good class to use in multiclass builds because it’s so customizable. You can mix and match metamagic with other spells and because of this they will always feel super powerful if you build it right

I personally am of the opinion that the sorcerer is a fantastic class but it needs work. The best sorcerer subclasses come with slightly expanded spell lists like the divine soul the clockwork soul and the aberrant mind. I feel like if the other subclasses had some additional spells that went along with the theme it would work out quite well. Not so much as to be game breaking but to complete the flavor. Being the embodiment of magic of a specific type or sort is the reason why sorcerers are so enjoyable.

I got the chance to play a dhampir aberrant mind sorcerer in a short Bloodborne style game. (He's kind of a big jerk, but that's not the point.) The reason why he's a dhampir and a sorcerer is because he had been around the influence of the great old ones so much that the magic actually altered him. Before that, he was just a normal human man. It led him to actually kind of resent his powers, but hey, the ability to teleport, get into people's minds, and to cast some sick spells comes in handy. For flavoring, I went for psychic and necrotic spells whenever I could, as well as mind stuff because that just fit his aesthetic. I think it helped that aberrant mind sorcerers have access to more spells, some of which were outside of the sorcerer spell list. I used telepathic speech on at least three party members and every single one of them (in character) hated it. It was great. He was a horrible man. :-) For the flavored cantrips supplement, I would be all for that.

I actually have an NPC planned for a campaign who is a Sorcerer. Divine Soul. His role is basically an ally to the party who occasionally gives them pointers and sometimes gives them quests. One quest I have planned is the players acting as bodyguards for him during a dungeon dive. Something that was forced on him by a colluege. "For the last time I don't need an escort." "Last time you went dungeon diving you ended up mummified and trapped for a week." "..... I got out..." Also I would like to have that supplement too.

Only played one Sorcerer and he is a homebrew subclass. (kinda a Draconic and Aborant Beholder type) Took some feats I normally would multiclass to avoid but I wanted to see the feature balance to the end plus high lvl Sorc feature gives Anti-magic field with buff and a mechanic that changes it from an aura to a 30ft cone. That and I will definitely be looking at Wish for lvl 17 because Sorcerer with a potentially free Simulacrum plus I have some weapons profiencys and several Magic toys.

Yes, they have raw potential, but there is also a source behind it. I see the subclass similar to a warlock patron, only you don’t have to answer to your source. Your Devine soul- had blood of the gods in his veins. I play a draconic bloodline. My mother was attacked by a dragon, survived and I my blood was altered due to it. A storm sorcerer was born during a thunderstorm where lightning struck near by. I do agree that Cantrips need to be upgraded to follow flavor more though and would love to see what you come up with.

I would not even say that the Sorcerer has to be "magic incarnate". But yes, it provides tons of options for flavor. One sorcerer can have draconic blood while another one simply stumbled into an unstable part of the weave. Hell, one officially suggested option is being abducted by mind flayers and gaining psyonic powers from the tadpole instead of becoming another tentacle face.

I've made my own stuff for the sorcerer but would love to see what someone else would do. But one thing I can not stress enough is that more spells known is not the answer (maybe like 1 or 2 extra). But instead give the sorcerer more metamagics known and maybe even subclass metamagics. Because for each metamagic you know you gain an additional spell for each spell you know that is compatible with it.
@DrLipkin
@DrLipkin 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, more spells known isn't the answer. Modifying the few spells they have to fit the situation that they are in is supposed to be their entire gimmick. Sorcerers should be able to get back sorcery points on a short rest before they reach level 20. Even something as simple as "Any time you roll a 20 on an attack roll, saving throw, or ability check, regain one sorcery point if you have any expended" would be a big help.

I play two 12 year old Aaasimar girls that are polar opposites of each other. They each both have 2 levels of cleric reflecting the deities that represent their ultimate destinies. Mihkhaela is a Tempest Cleric of Umberlee/ Storm Sorcerer who desires power over the elements and wreak fear and destruction to her enemies, just like her mother who is a Celestial who thinks she is the embodient of Nature. She transmutes powerful AOE spells into Lightning or Thunder then uses Channel Div to deal maximum damage. Amiamai is a daughter of a Celestial who served under Ilmater and so she desires to be come a great cleric and embody the teachings of Ilmater- to heal the wounded and give comfort to others. She is a Life Cleric/ Divine Soul Sorcerer who doesnt have any offensive spells (except Cantrips) and uses Twin and Distant metamagic to cast more potent Heals and Cure Wounds because she's also a Life Cleric. (she once healed a party member and a dying Celestial NPC for 100 HP each at the same time)

What if Sorcerers got Fighter ASIs? They could cap off their spellcasting modifier 2 levels earlier than the other full casters, and invest remaining ASIs into feats to make them more customizable, or just cap off their Con and Dex scores to be more resilient than Wizards. It's not a huge boost in power but it's enough to make them more rewarding to play.

As someone who plays a sorcerer a lot I do a unique flavoring. Cause by definition of the class they really aren't the best at everything they can alter magic in a way others can't. Example: I played a pyromancer sorcerer who took the performer feat. They had the entertainer background they would have fire emit from there feet as they dance. Have fire twirl around them and use the cantrip control flame too tell a story with it. The fun of a sorcerer isn't being strong but using it too do things no one has ever seen before. There magic is mysterious cause it doesn't follow the rules the wizard has too follow. Magic is effortless too them they are magic. There soul is magic they don't quite understand how there magic works but they can use it frivolous cause it feels as a part of them. All in all I wish the sorcerer had more known spells or spell slots to personify that person that exumes magic but my group does free casting out of combat so it gives me the freedom too be that overtly magical person.

I’m not a huge fan of the sorcerer and the main reason why is almost what you outlined in your video. For me and the way I tend to make characters the sorcerer simply doesn’t gel with my method of character creation. Usually with my character creation I ask myself several questions to figure out how this person became who they are. Simple ones like, why are they able to do this ability, what did they do before becoming an adventurer, are their parents still alive. So on and so on. But the number one most important question I always ask is, how did they get their first level in this class. So I would have a barbarian who raged for the first time when he dove into a fire to try and save his family unsuccessfully. Or the warlock who was born into a cult and tortured and when a voice reached out to her in the darkness of her room she reached back to find a way out of her torment. Or the wizard who learned basic magic as a kid and after getting his spell book stolen several times when he was homeless on the street he began to tattoo his spells on to his own skin and studied to learn how to locate his stolen sister. Or the older farmer who upon killing some goblins to protect his farm and wife realized how bored he was while in the midst of a midlife crisis. There is always the catalyst that makes the person gain that first level for me. Which is, at least for my imagination, lacking in the sorcerer. They are born with their power, they don’t have to work for it really outside of practicing I suppose. But it’s just a thing that is there regardless. So the main reason I tend to not really like it kid because for me it doesn’t have that spark in my imagination that all of the other classes get.

I latched on to this right away. My problem with sorcerers is the lack of mechanics to support the flavor of the class. I really wanted to be a storm sorcerer. But at low levels, 1-4, you don't get enough spells to realize that vision. So you feel gimped. Now that Tasha's has opened up the class with two kick butt subclasses with bonus spells, I have hope that new subclasses will be equally good.

I always prefer sorcerer over wizard. Might be because I first started roleplay with Pathfinder, where wizards really do suck by comparison to all the powers a sorcerer gets from their bloodlines. Wizards don't even get level 9 spells in Pathfinder, I believe, so a sorcerer is an investment for the most powerful magic user possible in that game. Most of it is the flavor, though. I pick my race to compliment the bloodline as perfectly as possible, creating a history with my sorcerers based on what they are and how what they are shapes them. A sylph I multiclass with five levels of monk and the rest of stormborn sorcerer is a trained fighter who grew up in a monastery with a mysterious medallion that acted as a seal to her storm powers, but once discovering their origin becomes her focus. And it allowed me to build in advance by choosing a monk subclass that complimented the wind and storms she'd later embody. I can't really do that with a wizard. Not in Pathfinder anyway, and even in DnD I could multiclass but it wouldn't have the same feel, the same story behind it.

Imagine if Sorcerers could prepare metamagic. They get to choose So Few. And I myself have wondered if i woul increase the number if i would dm for a sorcerer, they are still limited by the amount of sorcery points. Some are so specific its not worth to pick them. Like a distant spell isnt one of the first two you would choose, but would feel great when you need it. And I would love the new transmutative one, but Quickened is still useful more often. But a fun middle ground would be to be able to prepare metamagic. If you know that you will fight a flying dragon you can prepare distant spell, and can skip subtle spell!

I appreciate the flavor aspect, but I want to see it play out with mechanical flavor. Not every game runs on Rule of Cool, and for example purposes, Careful Spell is a less powerful, resource heavy version of the Wizard's Sculpt Spell. Wizards have breadth while Sorcerers have depth, but Sorcerers still feel shallow, and the Wizards are also given depth. I'm a very crunchy-game person, so flavor isn't quite good enough for my kind.

Honestly, my only real complaint about sorcerers has formed recently, as I wanted to make a necromancer shadow sorcerer, but (non Divine) sorcerers have only one spell that can raise the dead, and that's the 7th level finger of death. So if I want to play a necromancer sorcerer, I'm forced to use the Divine soul subclass (which has none of the class features I want for the characters aesthetic.) Or have the DM approve a homebrew expanded spell list. It's really annoying.

I think all casters should have that. Sorcs should have their own cantrip schools. Bards should have their own special magic spells, etc. But flavor and making characters just for flavor instead of being optimal feels like a newer movement. I've always made my characters flavor first, nerfing things that would get the party into possible trouble, yet finding that one skill that makes them invaluable to the possibility of saving the world. As we get more into the story building and away from the simplicity of hack and slash, I find more people thinking like I do. Supplements to catch up the core with those flavor possibilities seems essential now.

Sorcerer is a gimpy wizard no matter how much flavor you want to say they have , that was until they introduced clockwork and aberant mind , where they got more spells and some thematic skills. Those 2 subclasses are the examples of what every other ones should be ( expanded spell list specific for the so called flavor , on top of special skills they get for rolling that sub). If they rework the rest of the subclasses just like those 2 , then sorc will be powerful. ( then again , if they do that , they are basically following in the steps of Pathfinder , so basically they are chasing a game that branched off in 3.5 , hard to swallow that pill for the coast wiz boys)

I know I’m late but my first character is a draconic sorcerer/fighter and I am constantly seeing spells that the wizard gets that would be perfect for her. Call lightning, tenser’s transformation, true polymorph. The fact that sorcerer has little to no sorcerer only spells is a travesty, personally I would give spell lists specific to subclasses of sorcerer instead. Limit the options for each subclass but make every spell the subclass gets be either unique or the perfect fit. A draconic soul sorcerer shouldn’t be able to use like animate objects but maybe should get tenser’s transformation to pull out the true power of their dragon blood, a divine soul has no use for Tashas caustic brew but maybe should have another spell. Wizards are the greatest at having a spell for each occasion, a warlock is a spell caster that is a conduit for their patron and is the master of fighting for longer, a Druid embodies nature in its ferocity and power, but sorcerers don’t feel distinct enough from wizards to be their best selves.

Divine punishment, the human cleric stripped of their dignity and humanity, and dipped into the darkness of the shadowfell, has their lack of heart brought forth to the skin level. Next time, maybe you won't refuse to heal certain races, little Shadow Magic Tiefling. I enjoy the various forms of Sorcerer. It allowed my Tiefling to not only have access to ice magic, but be a Cha without having to be the generic horny bard. Ignore the fact my Tiefling is the subrace that gets Vicious Mockery and Charm Person. Shadow Magic Saurcer though broadens the minty flavor too.

Sorcerers are specialists, wizards are jack of all trades. If a wizard run out of 1st level spell slots they have to use second or higher levels, sorcerers can choose to keep making up to 5th level slots and always know all their spells. Wizard's versatility get hampered by how many party roles they take outside of combat. Up casting and versatile spells like suggestion can mitigate this for both classes, but not completely.

People tend to only look at spellcasting ability, and too often forget how much more useful Charisma skills are than Intelligence.

I'm about to play an aberrant mind sorcerer. He's an alien human hybrid born into an alien worshipping cult. Now he works as a psychic detective. That's a character I couldn't play with any other class.

You know how sorcerer have like… 3 or 4 levels they cant learn a new spell? When I dm… I scrap that. Idc if it gets broken, Sorc is my fav class so I wont shaft it those few extra spells. Additionally, I feel like sorcerer has great multiclass potential (Sorcadin for win!).
