@@yamuelsam Because there are currently less than 40% the number of local shops hosting weeklies for it in the US compared to 8 years ago in 2013. Less than 200 stores are keeping the game going; it's been on a slow downward trend for years that the pandemic dramatically accelerated. In Japan the 2019-2020 fiscal year saw a 20% drop in sales for Vanguard, while Media Create's quarterly report for March 30th - August 30th 2020 showed the game making 67% of its revenue compared to the same period in 2019. The last year Vanguard made more money compared to its previous one in the domestic market was 2018, so it's already been in financial decline for two years on top of being played at less places than ever before--putting it in a dangerously close position to where Buddyfight was prior to its cancellation. On the international level, California was Vanguard's largest US customer base, but has gone from 50+ active shops to just 16, while major urban stores like Core TCG have dropped the game for Digimon. (Currently, Digimon is actively carried at 90 stores in CA and weeklies are being held at 59 of those, roughly double and triple what Vanguard is doing in terms of carriers versus event hosts.) Other states that already only had a small number of locals have fared even worse. Massachusetts dropped from 11 stores to 4, Michigan went from 9 to 3, and some states are down to a single active shop. The game has not been hit as hard in Western Europe, but it has stagnated--there are exactly the same number of carriers now as 8 years ago. This is all going on as we're entering a highly competitive market where players will have more options than ever before, coming from Flesh & Blood, Digimon, Wixoss, and Gate Ruler. In October, Japanese Vanguard will be going up against Build Divide, which is timed to hit just as OverDress' second season is airing, and given Aniplex's scope as a global big-money company, this is likely the beginning of a major international clash between them and Bushiroad. We're watching the fight for Vanguard's future play out in real time all over the world. If we don't band together now, we'll be annihilated.

@@lost-worlds If Overdress isn't doing well its not something the player base can fix: it's a fundamental issue that solely relies on Bushiroad to resolve, especially if it's still aiming to become "the #1 TCG". The $4 starter decks and producer communication were great, but the anime's a huge miss and something's lacking for sure in the design department if players aren't showing up and stores don't feel confident stocking the game.

I’m glad you made this video, I’ve loved Vanguard for as long as I can remember, I used to use yugioh cards to act like they were vanguard cards or draw my own cards until I was finally able to get my own even if it was just a random bundle of cards. I’ve always loved this game since I was was like 9 or 10 and I’m turning 19 this year. This game deserves more love and I hope it never dies, it’s definitely up there with yugioh and Pokémon as the best TCG games❤️

It's funny, I came across this video after just having thought 2 people to play the game (I got into overdress via dear days about a week ago but I used to play up until about G era in the past but fell off due to life circumstances) and they caught on pretty fast on the basics and both have a different aproach from me (one using the magnolia deck because it looked cute and they quickly started picking it up and in a way playing better/thinking better about things then some people I knew that played in the past because they were annoyed about the trigger thing, a lot of things you explain here are nice to hear and it's cool they can follow along.). I really hope this game is doing well right now outside of it because it makes me want to come back to the game and this is one of the first card games where it feels like my friends can understand/get into fairly easily while still having so much room to grow or be expressive.) The video wasn't what I was expecting but we enjoyed watching it and it looks like they are more open to considering getting into it irl at some point.

Seriously. I've been a player ever since early g, and I stopped having fun at the end of G where the abilities and power creep accelerated to insane levels and there were turns it felt like were impossible to survive like with final support dominate. And those turns practically never minused the active turn player in terms of cards. Premium has always felt like that to Me, and that just makes it a very unfun format to play or even attempt to get into. Which is a shame because on paper I'd love to make a deck with such a huge card pool to pull from, but what's the point if I get killed before I can even blink if I fight gp, or I fight dI that kill me in one turn no matter what my damage is at or stand trigger abuse decks like valkerion and blade master.

There has to be something analogous to Goat format in YGO out there. I'm convinced it's as simple as BT4 format, but everyone gets a Ride Deck and vanilla triggers have the clan limitation removed

Vanguard is always so close to finding the perfect balance between "you can comeback from any situation" and "this game is too luck based" that no other game really tries to do. Outside of overtriggers (which IMO are fine if bo3 becomes standard), Overdress feels like one of the most refined TCGs I've ever played. The balance is great, the start decks are all fun and powerful, the mechanics are the perfect mix of easy and nuanced, and I never truly feel like I'm out of the game until the very end. Whether I'm in the lead or falling behind, the dance I have to do with luck always keeps the game thrilling. It's a stark comparison to other TCGs where you can usually tell turns or plays ahead whether you're going to win or lose. The Ride Deck alone has made other formats of the game near unplayable for me. Really glad Overdress has been successful so far, hope the anime improves along with the TCG.

Overdress is balanced? Lol this is Vangaurd, just give it time and it will become unbalanced fast and many of the decks will end up playing the same. This is the comment I would have left a year ago, when you posted this comment. However it's already become like this in Overdress, as it always inevitably does in Vanguard because Bushiroad sucks at card design.

The clans were really simple all revolving around simple mechanics that interacted with different parts of the game. The keyword stuff is out of control. I started playing right before legion came out with Divas Duet. I really enjoyed the game more and more as time went on and I love G-Era with a passion, even if it had issues that needed to be ironed out (GR's, rampant power-creep, Zeroths). Once V started though, I completely fell off and only played Premium here and there, but even Premium started to grate on me with how obnoxious the meta-game is currently. I laughed off the fact that Bushiroad had to reboot again, but once I tried a few of the decks, Zorga especially, I realized why the reboot needed to occur and I'm glad it happened. For me, it feels like Vanguard is finally back with Overdress. Lore being back is also a nice bonus lol.

I'm so glad I found this video. I recently wanted to get back into the game after seeing a clip on twitter recently, and tried vanguard zero after a few moments of playing, I said "hm. you sure this is how vanguard is played???" and then I looked up a tutorial to see that mobile is ultra different from the physical game (which in all honesty I prefer). I was really intrigued that you touched on Over dress too and how the game kinda got dumbed down a bit and that the clans have been mashed into nations, cause I couldn't choose whether or not to play narukami, kageru, or link joker. closing off I'm really glad vanguard is under new management quote on quote. I started the game back in the really old days(probably 2010 to 2011ish) where it was really new and was a good break away from yu-gi-oh honestly lol. I even printed out manuals at my local library. I don't want the game to die either so I really hope it can reach it's full potential from overdress and at least gets the treatment it deserves i.e. a better mobile game/ videogame in general everyone has access to like the online game we almost had. if there's a hashtag or something to get vanguard trending some how I'd be all for it. again glad you made this video, and thank you.

I know about CFV since 2013 after a classmate told me about it. However, I never considered playing it because of how I was into Yugioh and I really find CFV being very confusing to play tbh. At one point, I had a deep hatred towards CFV and all those Bushiroad card games because they took most of the Yugioh players in my locals. This was a time where I was so desperate to have someone to play Yugioh with. I might consider playing CFV during this OverDress era given how cheap the trial decks are.

I know the time period you're talking about. I remember going into a card shop that had a yugioh player base in prior years and at that time yugioh was dead in that store and everyone was playing Vanguard. Now, Vanguard is dead and everyone is playing Yugioh. I think this might be more of a smaller population issue since where I live we don't have as many people as other places, but if each game had their own player base or everyone played both then it wouldn't have been an issue and everyone could play. I've always been a yugioh player myself and I'm really curious about Vanguard. I love how the cards look and they're super cheap compared to Yugioh.
@akaiyui9300
@akaiyui9300 2 жыл бұрын
@@kylovich7129 Yeah my experience is similar to that. It was like months after I returned to playing Yugioh in 2017 and after years of believing that locals for it never existed in my city at all which made me quit in the first place. I only knew that Yugioh players were playing on chess tables at a park and Vanguard players in that bakeshop that used to host Yugioh. A year later, Yugioh players returned to that bakeshop after some negotiations and both games coexisted until Covid made the bakeshop stop catering to card games and us Yugioh players moved to another place. Still have no idea where do Vanguard players play now though some of them returned to playing Yugioh but still, it's a relatively small community. Since I live in Asia, Yugioh cards are cheap (based on what TCG people say) here since we use cards in the OCG. Despite that, I still find Yugioh kinda expensive to play on paper and it kinda tempts me to start playing Vanguard given that the starter decks cost around 200 pesos ($4).

MY problem with CFV is that the card text, including special symbols, is extremely tiny, AND it's sans serif. We've known for almost half a millennium that if you are going to crowd a lot of tiny text in a small space, serifs make that text much more readable. Given the Japanese talent for aesthetics and taking into account how the eye works (consider the layout of a Go board and stones), I am frankly baffled by this lack of attention to detail.

Damn, I wasn't expecting to get emotional there at the end. Good video with a lot of good information. Being someone who has played since it started I can say it has changed not just my life, but everyone else who got into it. The game was like a guide post or lighthouse, showing us where we can go. Through game play, figured out generally who we as individuals are and who we want to be in the future. Vanguard does has its own issues, but it is only of the only games that I'm aware of that will soft reboot in order to fix an issue. I can't see any of the Big 3 doing that. One thing Vanguard does have in common with the Big 3 (2 of them at least) are the different formats and ways to play. Vanguard is a game where you can play it have ever you like and that in itself is wonderful. Who left this bowl of onions here!?

In D I've truly saw how great the game was looking back. G format was way better than when I played it, V series was where I was disillusioned by the game a little with how much nostalgia it had, but with the new direction of the game, I am more hopeful that the natural power creep of the game isnt overwhelming, as D has just started and they needed a way to introduce new things somehow, which also not to mention V had been looking better than ever. All that is left is a ban list that can hold everything back together maybe Vanguard will live another 10 years, and I wish it will. The game has been a massive part of my life, and all I want is to forever be able to back to it when I need to just relax.

I first found Vanguard while just looking up different anime and feel in love with it but couldn’t play it for the longest time until the Aichi Sendo Legend deck came out and I could finally play with my favorite clan which I do eventually want to get a tattoo of and found people to play with them V series started and allowed me a way to try and share my interest of the game while getting it more simple for a while and I do like why they are doing with Overdress with allowing the game to be even more accesible while trying to fix the supporting problem. I hardly play any deck that didn’t have a trial deck because it was hard for me to built those decks from packs and singles. Now with them combining the nations to just 5 it also lets everyone get support at the same time unlike in the past with clans only getting their 1 a year support and you don’t know when it’s going to happen. I love that the new trial decks are cheap and they have one for all of the nations which I still need to buy and want to try and bring my friends into once again

I like Vanguard, but I really want to see Vanguard played online just like Yu-Gi-Oh & poke'mon. Vanguard Zero is ok, but it's too different from the original game. Vanguard on the Japan 3DS was really good and a great way to practice. But with only a Japanese version of the games to play, the western players didn't have the opportunity to play unless they paid the extra money to import it. Vanguard E.X was really nice to on the PS4 & Switch, but the game was missing Premium play. It only had Standard and I'm a premium player. And last but not least Vanguard was preparing a new online game, and it didn't get past the Beta stage and it was canceled. I want to see Vanguard shine in these dark areas. I quit Yu-Gi-Oh for Vanguard after 14 1/2 years of playing it. But if Bushiroad doesn't get this message, then I'll just play Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh again, because Vanguard will no longer be Fun for me.

Used to play vanguard , I started around BT07-BT08(JPN) and play it semi competitively(within my budget but I still want to win) until the last booster of the G-Era.It is my first tcg, I really like it because (most of time) there is no cost to simply call a unit or guard with the unit, you could play with your hand without any hard restriction. I really enjoy the earlier stride era when effects aren't too busted and the triple drive gave some wins to non meta decks, no archetype restriction and you can bring some cool techs. Once the G-era came out with the last booster, my angel feather rescue deck simply can't compete with gear chronicle,nubatama and the decks supported in the last booster. V-era is busted, accel 2 is busted, ezel was busted, most tier decks are bland : attack more with accel / restand to multiple attacks. I simply quit vanguard back then to play japanese Battle spirit then quit BS to play Weiss Schwarz. While Weiss Schwarz is not a perfect game, I really like the casual nature and the very soft power creep, I don't really need to worry about new cards/series and just play the series that I enjoy with friends.

I wish I could get into Vanguard, but its anemic themeing makes it hard for me to get my casual card game/tabletop buds in. I don't say that to yuck the yum, I just find it frustrating cuz what I've played on the mobile app (yk, before it tries to bleed you dry) or in sims was great. It's rare to have much fun with starter deck fights, but I got a couple great hours in years ago with 'em, and that exemplifies how solid the core rules are. Then that got me really into the first anime series and... Well, I don't play it much myself, but I take frequent peeks at it as a card game nerd. I'd be sad to see it go.

I got into Vanguard during early-mid V format, and while I enjoyed it (not having the original to compare it to), it's nothing compared to Overdress. Almost all the changes it brought actually solidified it as one of my top 3 favourite games and strong contender for first, only held back by some issues like the Overtrigger. And the community's energy is so high, it's almost unrecognizable from how it was just a couple years ago. It feels pretty good to be a Vanguard fan now! It's a truly special game to last 10 years, and here's hoping that it carries on with this big push!

I played back before its reboot and I loved it. I loved how unique each faction felt. I loved the trigger mechanic so much! It was a great mix of luck and strategy. Eventually I learned about MTG and how it had a format called EDH (or Commander) and that was way more interesting to me than Vanguard. Vanguard can never do what Commander can do in where it can be casual and multiplayer and MTG just has more freedom in building decks due to its larger card pool.

Do I come from an area with no clubs, easily accessible tournaments, and nobody really who spends money on vanguard, so starting is really hard. I tried playing a few times but it's way to difficult to get into now I'm just gonna go for build divide after the English release

I think something that could make Cardfight Vanguard more popular is it's own version of Master Duel, but I think that game needs to have EVERY era of Cardfight Vanguard. Original, G series, V premium and Overdress. Any era's that I missed, please mention them here since I am still new to the game and the series. Make that game a home for every Vanguard player, and make it a game that welcomes new players. I can picture how much fun it would be having matches on whatever they call a game like that with some of my friends who currently only know of YuGiOh and MTG.

Why are are starter decks for this game £4 while the videogame is £54?
@lost-worlds
@lost-worlds 2 жыл бұрын
...Why *wouldn't* the video game be that price? Producing a 100+ hour game with a campaign mode, a soundtrack, online multiplayer, voice acting, and hundreds of different cards with fully automated rules that can handle every possible situation they create requires much more labor than a single starter deck. The developers have to pay programmers, bug testers, network engineers, musicians, scenario writers, texture artists, customer support, and a dozen other positions, while also paying the overhead to keep their equipment and offices operating, and they do all this *without* lootboxes or other predatory microtransactions. In what world is all that work not worth £54?
@AxelWedstar411

@@lost-worlds I'm just saying there're 1st party Switch games that don't cost that much. And I doubt Dear Days spent as much time in development as Breath of the Wild...
@lost-worlds
@lost-worlds 2 жыл бұрын
@@AxelWedstar411 First party games aren't a remotely fair comparison, as the platform owner Nintendo can afford to reduce its prices by supplementing its business with licensing and manufacturing fees paid to it by other developers, and with merchandising deals on its IPs. (And they can bank on selling 20+ million copies--the previous Vanguard game only sold 10 thousand.) FuRyu is just a subcontractor on Vanguard and the brand itself isn't profitable enough for Bushiroad to offset the costs of development like that. Most people don't even know it exists, it's incredibly small compared to Zelda and Splatoon. When a third party dev puts out their game on the eShop, they're paying Nintendo 30% of every sale; when Nintendo puts a game out on the eShop, they're paying no one. The economics of running a 250-person company like FuRyu and a 6500-person company like Nintendo don't scale at all.

All of the things we enjoyed when we were younger die. The communities of the last 20, 25, even 30 years, effectively no longer exist. Even something like Pokemon, which you said "will march on into perpetuity", is unrecognizable from when my mom would take me to Toys R Us after school on Tuesdays to play in the TCG League events. (I remember Fossil set coming out in the US and being amazed). Pokemon is even unrecognizable from the invisionfree+chatango 2009-2010 internet communities where I had met so many friends. Friends who I would play Pokemon and Yugioh with for years, people who I would consider some of the best friends of my life, people who lost interest eventually and who I will never be able to speak to again. These fan communities die, these relationships die. Let kids have their own fads, something completely their own.
@lost-worlds
@lost-worlds Жыл бұрын
Just because you checked out of them doesn't mean those communities stopped existing. They expanded into Discord, KZbin, and Twitter; that hasn't taken away from the countless local hobby shops running them, or from players like Jason Klaczynski passing the torch to the next generation. I was already an adult when Vanguard came to the US, it was never a fad; it never got that much of a chance. Many shops refused to carry it at the start because they insisted only the Big Three were viable games. Most of the American players were 18~25 when it started, some in their 30s--barely any children played. If my game dies, what's left for me at locals? What am I supposed to play? Metazoo? Shadowverse? Yet another Magic clone? There isn't anything else that copied Vanguard's unique hooks; the drive check, the shield system, counterblast. 12 years on and it's still unlike anything else out there. How is it in any way right that Magic, Pokemon, and YGO should thrive for all this time, while more innovative games are cast aside? We know from other markets that it doesn't have to be this way. Duel Masters and Battle Spirits have continued uninterrupted in Japan since 2001 and 2008. Digimon 2020 and Flesh & Blood finally broke through the Big Three's deathgrip on western markets and opened up local retail to smaller games--this is an opportunity for Vanguard to live, instead of just survive.

I wish Vanguard didn't accelerate as fast as it did. I wish Vanguard wasn't as swingy as it was. I wish that Bushiroad cared about a competitive atmosphere for any of their card games. But they don't, and it is showing. Their two largest games outside of Japan are dying or dead. Weiss is essentially completely dead, and Vanguard is on life support after they rebooted it, a second time. I cannot believe they rebooted it, caused the same problems they caused in 8 years in 2, and then rebooted again. Vanguard is not a system that can work with rotation, but their card design seems like they need it. I haven't played a Bushiroad game in a while, but I've watched as shops up here in Canada, in the Toronto Area which is one of the three centres for card games, most stores don't sell Vanguard Singles, and those that do open a single box, manage to sell the hits out of the box, and may as well throw the rest of the box in the trash.
