Parent didnt understand that PS2 games needed a PS2 Memory Card so I had the joy of playing DMC over and over without a way to save. I became a god at the first half of that game and will never forget beating it without saving once.

If there's something about Devil May Cry that I can appreciate it's that Dante getting impaled on his own sword just turns into a running gag by 4. Complete with him yanking himself out of the wall he's stuck to and then pulls the sword out as if it were no big deal.

There's just something about the original Devil May Cry that just feels unique compared to its sequels, and upon revisiting it several times, I realize because the tone and atmosphere of the game is very different, like its trying to evoke a far more horrifying atmosphere in contrast to the mostly zany antics of Dante and the combat. Its like its still trying to be a Resident Evil game but also trying to be something else.

The first DMC is truly an amazing game, glad to see someone doing a video on it. While other DMC games have managed to fix and change a bit some of the things present in the first game (mostly for better), it still remains the only DMC game which truly feels gothic and a bit horror-like and captures the best atmosphere and consistent combat out of all DMC games.

This was a very good breakdown of the original title. I remember my first fights(s) with Phantom-- eventually, I found out you can stand on his back and wail on him. And Ifrit will freaking DESTROY bosses with its charged punches. Seriously, Nelo Angelo will fold like paper after a couple full-charge punch combos. I also like who the phrase "Devil may cry" has changed a bit over the years; at first it was just a reference to how badass Dante was. In 3 it evolved to a philosophical idea that some humans are more evil than devils, and a rare few devils are actually kind. I was also kind of surprised that the final level was Starfox... Incidentally, we seldom see you smile in any of your work, but flying around with succubus wings and frying things with lightning bolts seems to agree with you. I approve.

This video series single-handedly caused me to pick up the whole series, and I have to say that watching it again partway through the first game was really helpful. I hadn't realized that devil trigger restored health, nor did I know that taunting built up devil trigger; I thought it was just a kitchy little side mechanic with no practical value. I also like the recommendation to spend red orbs on skills instead of items. Basically what I'm trying to say is: Suzi Sphere Hunter forever.

I think the reason why so many people say the original DMC hasn't aged well was because DMC3 existed on the same generation of console and completely blew DMC1 out of the water in terms of level design, Boss design, combat, and I'd argue even music. That doesn't stop DMC1 from being a great game mind you, but I think a lot of people believe that DMC3 is a good representation of what the series is as a whole. Love the video as always. I hope to see you do a video on the other installments too soon.
@OneDoomedGameCritic

I'd have to disagree about DMC3 having better boss and level design. Certain bosses are better, certainly, but Mallet Island had a more cohesive art style and unique atmosphere, and the boss gallery of 1 (Excluding Mundus's final phase) we're all tests of different abilities of the player. While I like the boss gallery in 3, things like Leviathan's Heart, Doppelganger, and Arkham were less interesting across the whole, even with DMC1's repeated encounters. 3's combat is a clear step up, though, that's almost undeniable.

This is my favorite game of all time. I was introduced to it at the age of four, and have been hooked ever since. Despite the graphical and gameplay improvements of the newer games, I favor this one. The difficult, yet simplistic gameplay, the amazing level designs and ambiance created by the music, and the memorable enemies are why I continue to play the game even today. And the story, though being overshadowed by the rest of the mechanics, is still there. I believe it was showed just enough to keep the game interesting. And now, sixteen years later, as I replay through on the hard difficulty, I remain on the edge of my seat.

@charlesgray6385
@charlesgray6385 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, definitely worth the trade off. There’s also a lot of cool exploits in the game which add a lot more depth like slash cancelling which allows you to interrupt the sheathing animation in your attacks to attack far far faster than you should be able to, and unless the enemy has super armour, you’ll hit stun them into oblivion. Alongside this there’s an alternative method to killing a certain boss which is subtly shown in the boss, and appears to be canonical according to the cutscene after beating the boss, as well as there actually being two weak points on Phantom - face and top of his back. You can even reflect his magma balls right back at him with a well timed slash. Either way, as Sphere Hunter said, the game’s got a tonne of hidden depth to it, and it’s well worth playing. If you ever want to really dig into it just go onto r/DevilMayCry and we’ll all help ya, or look up some tips and tricks videos on KZbin.

Just started playing this for the first time last night and so far its pretty sweet. That spider wrecked me though, I died at least 3 times before I finally beat it (Devil Trigger mode saved me). The second boss wasn't as hard but a lot more enjoyable since I wasn't dying so much, so it felt like a real battle between two powerful beings. The Resident Evil similarities are great as a source of familiarity, in hindsight it's very clear that this began development as a Resident Evil game. And the battle music is always fun to hear, really gives off a fun slayer vibe. Definitely looking forward to continuing tonight when I get home.

I actually played DMC 4 before the others. Really liked it, but didn´t understand much at the time (I was probably 10 or something; plus, I´m mexican, so I was just learning how to speak english), for me it was just button mashing fun. At 17 I bought the HD collection and, I really don´t go for older games (I had a PS3 at the time, and going back to PS2 graphics didn´t quite cut it for me) but now I could understand what they were saying. Replayed DMC4 and man, the whole context really left me with this warm feeling of having played a great game. Today I´m super excited for DMC5, not exactly a die-hard fan, but definitely big enough to buy it with my eyes closed. Definitely a series worth checking out, and honestly I love how you make your videos. Your voice is so soothing and manages to express a sense of admiration and excitement without having to shout, and your little "character" appearing here and there, I absolutely love that.

Devil May Cry was being played one day, and it absolutely BLEW MY MIND. This video made me smile like an idiot, definitely don't regret subbing to your channel after finding out about your content last night. Binge watched all of your RE videos and honestly considering a second go-around through the videos, you have style and I like it.

I only recently played DMC again and it's still amazing. I remember playing this sometime after it came out. The last time for me was 17 to 18 years ago. Well done and awesome video.

This was my first PS2 game and it was love at first sight. I have beaten this game 3 times because I tried to get everything in it. I love the whole Devil May Cry series especially the new DMC 5. Thank you for sharing your love of this game.

So glad someone made a video like this. That demo disk in Code Veronica's box had some different camera angles that made the game more stylish. TSH has the best voice too. Be my Trish!

Your experience with Devil May Cry was very similar to mine. Right down to the demo disc, getting blown away by the gameplay, and loving Dante's ridiculous and hilarious character

I spent almost 10 years not finishing this game after an ex introduced to the series. Kind of regret not doing a recording of the gameplay with my reactions to the difficulty, but at the same time I was not in a good place emotionally. The game was fun and in forcing me to “get good” helped me easy through some frustration. Your retrospective is incredible and keep being awesome

Just played the first DMC for the first time ever, in 2019, and I do think the game holds up. We've come a long way with games like DMC3 and Bayonetta, but this first installment shows all the time how it is the start of something great in videogames. I loved noticing all the cool and innovative things and even the funny, cheesy parts like if I was playing it back when it released. All of it is still there and it impresses or makes you laugh just the same. Loved this game, loved the experience.

I started this series last week, DMC was torture, specially Nightmare fight three, that fight got my blood boiling, I couldn't give up because I still had to play the other three games, so I did eventually beat it. Anyway, it's a great series, I'm into it, I just beat four and I am just waiting for five to come out. Thanks for the video.

Very well made video. The original Devil May Cry was where I started as well, but the only way I've managed to finish it on Normal difficulty during my first playthrough was grinding for red orbs for several hours to increase my health and get new skills. (mainly because I was initially stuck on the fight at the end of Mission 6) Despite that however, I ended up replaying the game multiple times and got better and better at the game to the point where I don't need to grind at all. The original Devil May Cry may not be my favorite game in the series, but I still really like it. :)

I've never been more happy listening to someone talk about dmc. You got all your facts straight too, and I enjoy how despite how much you love and enjoy it you didn't skip on the negative parts of the game. You rock! >w< What you said about some people thinking the game hadn't aged well, I have some thoughts on that. Over the years I've heard similar things from both people trying the game for the first time and people who had played it many years ago. I can't personally see this myself when I play it, but I think there's something about the speed and animation of the jumping and running that is hard for people to get used to, not to mention the button mapping for jumping and attacking. I can't wait for the day when you cover the other games from the series as well! (I assume you may also do a review on the 5th game when it comes out too)

youll notice if you jump you cant adjust your positioning the air once you leave the ground, however you jump while moving is how youll move through the air. It gives the game a lot of weight and sense of inertia but it does so by throwing flexibility out the window. Its also why the aerial downslash is so fast feeling because, unless you fire your guns or air raid, Dante is going to drop like a rock, no floaty air attacks in this game.
