I’ve always been a pretty small and unathletic person but I started boxing just before my 21st birthday. Early on I found Ippo and it was a huge inspiration when I was building up my athleticism to keep up with the technique. It helps that I’m about his size and weight with a similar pressure fighting style. Every time he learned a new technique I was like hey I do that :) Even a year later I’ve noticed that I managed to maintain my emotional softness(?)/ humility and have been described as “weirdly constructive” during spars

Saying Ippo is an anime about boxing, is like saying Rocky is a movie about boxing: both statements might be "correct", but that generalization does an extreme disservice to the story, the characters, the sheer cinematic brilliance of both series. I'm glad you dug deep into this anime.

@dabeastfromdaweast97884 жыл бұрын
Something that is almost never talked about with this series (which I'm glad you touched on) is Ippo's start from absolute zero. Boxing, MMA, kickboxing, combat sports in general are stereotyped as being loaded to the gills with steroid abusing jocks that need to fight because of some inferiority complex but this can not be further from the truth. So many people will come into the gym as timid underdogs who mold themselves into confident champions by breaking themselves down then building themselves back up better than before. Arrogant twats exist in the sport, but so many more are simply average Joes trying to discover the best sides of themselves by embracing the fire within themselves they didn't even know they had. It's a shame that stigma surrounds combat sports, I thoroughly believe that the art is something that brings out the best in everyone no matter who you are. If you're a meat head you will be forced to humble yourself or you'll countered straight to the mat in the middle of your wild aggression, and if you're timid and shy than you will be forced to find your fighting spirit or you'll be backed up to the ropes and picked apart. It forces you to recognize your flaws and fixes them through grit and friction the same way sandpaper smooths out a rough piece of wood Never doubt yourself, if you've been tempted to sign up to any kind of martial art don't hesitate to sign up and embrace the amazing journey it will send you on. I promise it is one you won't regret because it really _is_ meant for everyone. Find your fire like Ippo that will give you the strength to move forward and show the world what you're made of
@estebangrafeuille91114 жыл бұрын
Beautifully expressed. I can't help but agree with you. Martial arts helped me a lot with bullies (luckily just the reputation of training managed to discourage them to fight me or my friends) and taught a lot of things about myself, plus it started my interest in philosophy. Thanks to martial arts I also managed to save a friend of mine indirectly (I used to train him in a few easy ways to defend himself on the street and managed to defend himself against an attacker thanks to that) Training has given me a lot of value and I definitely would recomend everyone to try them at least once
@jasongibson12253 жыл бұрын

Honestly nowadays, I only see martial arts and boxing as people who want a chance at a better life, if you read the stories of fighters like Tyson, Charles Oliveira, Sean Strickland, etc. they were all troubled people who found martial arts to cope with a troubled past. @Pensadordosceus6 жыл бұрын
I disagree about Hajime no Ippo not bringing nothing new to the shonen genera. You have to realize the manga begun in 1989. 29 years ago. And Ippo as a shonen character is something precious to behold and original even to nowadays standards. He didn't start boxing to 'prove he's the strongest', and he didn't continue it due to some awesome dream of becoming a world champion. He's Ippo. A guy who symbolizes the Japanese stereotype. He's quiet, gentle, helpful to his mom and makes the best he can do in every activity he engages. But at the same time someone who's practicing one of the most competitive sports ever made, that requires every boxer to have a tiger/champion mentality, but still "lacks" that. And that's what is new and unique to me in the series. Most shonen mangas you have a hero who always smiles, always is the centerpiece to gather all his friends together to a common goal, has that crazy charisma that affects his allies and foes and has that ultimate dream served as a motivation to train hard and achieve this final task. Ippo doesn't have any of those traits. At least he's charismatic figure does not come from the same place as any other hero. His motivation does not come from any dream. If you follow the manga, for example, you can see how never trained ou did things (at least 97% of the manga) from a place of anger or 'dream fulfilling' sensation. It's just the purest 'work hard' motivation. He's the ultimate japanese hero. Another thing that always impressed me is how this same 'lack' of tiger mentality is used as a narrative tool to establish great dialogues with Takamura in the manga (who has the Muhammad Ali, Myke Tyson, Julio Cesar Chavez, Mayweather mentality), and how it was used to start reflections inside Ippo to make possible a character progression. "That's the line only monsters can survive", said Takamura next to the tree you showed. And it is this same tree who's almost a character by itself if you read the manga. Because of every great intern moment to Ippo, there's always a reflection of where he's started and what he wanted to do and what he can become. So I really disagree with the idea the series brought nothing new. Ippo's construction itself is alone as a manga hero in Japan. I just expect you changed your opinion over the years.
@cond.oriano49455 жыл бұрын
I agree it’s original also because it doesn’t rely on the main character to have insane powers. Boxing is something anyone can do and ippo is probably the best realistic and relatable male protagonist created. It wasn't even a month into my training when my trainer almost came when i dodged a hook by crouching and countering with a liver blow during a sparring match. You could see a fire light up in his eyes, he was already making big plans. He already wanted me to take on the nationals right then and there. unfortunately, it was just a hobby for me, so i wasn't interested. i was there just for fun. i stayed a bit more then quit when i was bored, never to fight again. it was cool while it lasted, but it wasn't for me. Boxing fights feel empty when you don't know the fighters, it would be the same if you watched only Hajime No Ippo's fight scenes and skip the characters development. But when you go deep into what a fighter in real life has gone through, how much he has sacrificed, from where he started and what he has overcome, then it becomes as interesting as watching this anime, the life story of some fighters are as moving as the ones in this anime. Take for example Tyson Fury's rise, achieving what everyone thought impossible for him, beating Wladimir Klitschko the unified Heavyweight Champion of the world who dominated 10 years unbeaten, his subsequent fall into a psychological depression that lead him to drug addiction, alcoholism, to lose his professional license and to the verge of suicide, and how he overcame all of that and made his way back into the ring to face one of the most devastating punchers in boxing(Deontay Wilder), it was wonderful, even the fight itself was like it was scripted, you can easily make a best seller movie out of it.

@kingraj3337 жыл бұрын
honestly ippo's fangirling of Miyata is pretty forced, like i get the author wants to make a sort of Goku/vegeta, naruto/sasuke kind of friendship/rivalry but to do that means you should make the two characters ACTUALLY interact, fight and spend more time together. Those two spent their most time together probably early in the manga, but barely ever again after that.
@wellguesswhatIthink7 жыл бұрын
I mean I get the intent, really. Miyata and Ippo are usually seen observing and commenting on eachothers' matches, and usually have the best insight on them. The problem is their great rematch that was torpedo-ed out of the story The excuses given are that Miyata's cancellation offended coach Kamogawa, scheduling matches is hard and Miyata's days as a Featherweight are numbered anyway. But Miyata's not moved on to jr. light 300-400 chapters later and no new excuses have been given Wonder if George-sensei's just buying time to design the jr. light world champ
@rdu2394 жыл бұрын
Currently I think the author made Ippo most human and grounded as possible. 1. He suffered major back to back losses 2. Decides to retire 3. Questioned his future in boxing 4. Badly mentored a deliquient what he thought is supposedly his great desciple 5. He is working in the corner for the Kamogawa team 6. And now he still deals with his personal struggles and doubts in boxing

Takamura vs hawk, the ending had me choking up and quietly screaming in my throat at 3am while my wife was asleep. Ippo is probably my favorite anime and I grew up with dragon Ball Z, lain, Bebop, trigun, and so many other classics that I took for granted as being the standard quality of anime. Ippo, for me, resonates because life is a battle. It's a fight and sometimes I just need a damn good shonen to give me the courage to take on the next big scary opponent in life.

Eh, i like what his character is supposed to be. He is much more of a kid who's kind of spoiled and naturally talented. Seeing him get beat up in the manga by his old rival was great too. It really fit his character and how he was going to develop. He fights better without thinking, which is in contrast to the other characters who need to keep calm and stay focused. Rather than thinking about their next punch and reading their opponent, Itagaki is chanting to himself to go faster showing his determination. I love his concept, i just wish he was done better. He felt out of place along with his bad execution. He's better than budget Sasuke, aka Miyata. But anything is better than Miyata.

"The overly confident Sendo, who actually feels like he could be the main character of an entirely different boxing anime but it just so happens that he exists in Ippo's world. His fanbase are rabid in a way that Ippo's simply are not. And the subplot about him buying kids a Sega megadrive is endearing as hell." Sendo is actually heavily inspired by Joe from Ashita no Joe who like Sendo is an overly confident and poor, brawler type boxer. The kids you see all the time with Sendo, are also most likely inspired by the kids from Namidabashi who hang out with Joe all the time. And the fanbase of Sendo's is like a more fleshed out version of Joe's fanbase who you don't really get to see from a perspective that's not Joe's. There's actually a lot of cool references and homages to Ashita no Joe in Hajime no Ippo since the mangaka grew up reading a lot of Ashita no Joe when he was younger, like Ricardo Martinez being scarily like a younger Jose Mendoza.

King of Darkness Yeah I can definitely see why you wouldn't like that, but Joe is a bit more nuanced in that he's not REALLY that confident in himself 100% of the time. Both the anime and manga rarely ever outright state he's scared or doubtful of himself, but rather they like to imply it subtly like before both of his matches with Rikiishi, Joe starts to get visibly anxious and lashes out at people around him more easily. Or how before his match with Carlos, Danpei makes it a point to wipe off the cold sweat on Joe's face.

I usually save these “why you should watch…” videos for when I’ve completed a series and want someone else’s perspective, specifically Eyepatch Wolf’s perspective, on a series(Yu Yu Hakusho being the only other series I hadn’t watched before putting on a “Why you should watch” video which I followed by watching Yu Yu Hakusho). So I decided to watch this video having never watched Hajime No Ippo as I figured I’d never watch the show at all. But after watching this video, in fact after only getting to minute 5 of the video, I’ve decided I’m going to binge the series tonight all night. It just looks like the type of show I’d love. The animation, the story style, the boxing factor, and especially how great Eyepatch makes it look, all of it seems like a real powerful combo of anime attributes that I would love. Thanks again Eyepatch, as I loved Yu Yu, for introducing me to a show I expect to really enjoy, and I’ll let you know my thoughts when I’ve concluded the series.
@johnlindsay73018 ай бұрын
So to follow up from above I did start watching the show and I’m so thankful I did. Wow what a show! I’m at the climax of the rookie tournament and I’m loving it. It is really wholesome in a really gratifying way. It also has great humour that has had me laughing so loud my wife had to ask what was so funny. Well Ippo is so funny. His social awkwardness is used as such a great gag again and again. I really love it. I’ve also found myself cheering out loud during his matches as they are done so well. And I want to comment on your thoughts that “this was the anime I needed right now” because I feel the same way. I’ve been dealing with some stress that has really had me up at night. I feel so many conflicted emotions regarding the source of this stress from failure to incompetence to frustration at how I’ve been treated, to all sorts of things that have me in a knot. But this show, this anime about a small boxer who does everything he can to overcome these same emotions has me feeling so much better. It has allowed me to forget these issues when I’m feeling my worst. It has me falling asleep when I thought I’d be up all night. It has me at peace which is so powerful in times like these. It’s truly a great anime for any anime lover. Highly highly recommended

If there is a Manga top list, Slam Dunk will be no.1。I hope they will remake Slam Dumk including last part of the manga.

To me Hajime no Ippo is many things (only read the manga), but it has the basic ingredient a sports manga must have to succeed, and that's to transmit the desire to practice it (Slam Dunk and Captain Tsubasa come to mind). It's incredibly humane in a way not many other shonen stories are. And how there are no real villains, but people with real peoples' problems, insecurities and quirks. It hit me when Ippo faces Jason Ozma, subverting all possible preconceptions very early in the manga, and from there on it just gets better (for the most part). The way Sendo is always a loud guy, yet it doesn't speak on Ippo's first fight is also something awesome. A 30+ year work can be dissected many times over and over again. Because the artists' soul is clearly there. Great video.

Thank you Super Eyepatch Wolf. For getting me into this series, I was looking for an anime like this exactly and now this is my favourite anime/manga. :)
