That last bit about Jonathan clutching Dio and stopping the violence with acceptance is exactly why Jonathan just barely misses the status of forgettable and if not leapfrogs him into unforgettable legend status. The tragic happy never after he gets is why we never want to see our badass protagonists like Joseph/Jotaro/Josuke lose. It’s a great remedy for the plot armor shonen protagonists are draped with. You just need to justify it. Cheers to you Jonathan!
@illusionofquality9794 жыл бұрын
Ya. Jonathan could have been better characterized throughout his journey to match Dio's but his end was stellar. You get a glimpse of it when he defeats Dio for the second time and he sheds some tears for his brother but it's handled so-so. Going back the Dio's third defeat, when I watched anime I genuinely thought that Dio showing respect for Jonathan was part of his another scheme so reading manga and seeing that he didn't have any mocking internal monologue really made me love their dynamic.

"It's when you start to look at it as a small part of a larger whole does it become something truly special" You perfectly described this part for me. I was introduced to Jojo by a friend, but i was almost disappointed with Phantom Blood. It was good, but i've heard so many times how great Jojo was, and i felt like i was missing something. It wasn't as fun as i thought or as original. It was over the top in some points, but it ended there. Thank God i kept watching the series. Now i can respect this part more, since it's the one who started it all, but it can put newcomers of the series down.

"These characters are now perfectly positioned to crash into each other" I think this phrase is the very short summary of what all of JoJo is about: It's not just about great character, it's also how they clash and affect each other, bringing out the best and worst of those around them, and showing just how determined, creative and different humans can be under different circumstances in a very poetic way. As Araki himself said, JoJo is a glorification of humanity.

I think it borrowed heavily from Dracula and (possibly) Dickens. If there was no mask and no Hamon, I think Phantom Blood would have played out remarkably like a Dickens story. It has the themes of class divide, exaggerated characters meant more as representatives of a social ill or good than human beings, and growth from childhood to adulthood.

I’ll say this though, phantom blood is my favorite part and always will be, and it’s a shame people don’t see it the way I do. Kind of silly to call phantom blood “standard” when it’s actually the blueprint for all shounen manga/anime nowadays. It seems standard but that was groundbreaking back in the 1980s. @@kn-tr2gt JoJo isn’t perfect by any means what makes it enjoyable is that you can tell the authors improving as a weighted in each part and that the previous parts are made better retroactively with a lens given by later parts.
