To address the most common comments: - "You should have held up the RS6 revs" - we did actually but I wasn't filming and it made no difference. The battery has since been replaced and was proven to be on the way out. - "Why didn't you have it on a trickle charger" - at my home I do not have access to power sockets. As I even showed in previous videos when I go away for longer I store the car elsewhere, I even did a demonstration video of how the trickle charger works. - "Turn off the headlights" - They are off for parts of this, but you can't turn off the running lights as you can't in any modern car - A whole load of other blah-blah from the experts of KZbin! It's simple, the battery is dead, a new one is in and then it all works fine, stop trying to be the smartest kids on the block because you're wrong.

Using a more powerful car wont jump start the car easier lol. The problem isnt the others car battery not being powerful enough, its the voltage drop across the jumper cables and in the connection. Cables are like a resistor and when you demand a lot of current, the voltage on the other end drops. That's why your lights and stuff work and it shows voltage but as soon as you crank the engine the voltage dies. Its best to leave the cables connected for a little while and let the other cars alternator charge your dead battery. Once it has a bit of charge in it, it will start right up.

You are doing it wrong! You don't connect ++ and -- , that's the number one mistake people do. What you should do is to connect++ and then, the negative from the good battery with the chassis of the bad car! This will prevent the bad battery to spark/explode and the ECU of the cars to get damaged. You also need a fat cable to do that.

Putting the -ve clip onto a bare metal part of the car is, as stated, to reduce the risk of there being sparks and therefore explosions/fire - that's correct. It's also there's more surface area for the clip to a make decent contact. But it won't stop the ECU popping - if the ECU would pop if the -ve clip was on the battery -ve clamp, it'll do so too if the clip is on the bare-metal; you are still applying a donor battery's punch onto the electrical system whether the -ve clip was on the battery, onto a section of bare-metal chassis or even onto a bare-metal portion of the engine.

As a Mechanical Engineer and a fellow car lover there are a couple of things I want to mention: First is, you should never ever connect the two batteries without the powering car being turned on. Doing what you did in the video can result in the powering battery to discharge rather fast and then, instead of 1 you have 2 cars with the same problem. Secondly, while doing it, idleing isn't the ideal way, you should actually rev the engine that's powering the other battery. The fact that the RS6 couldn't charge your car has nothing to do with how much voltage it produces or anything like that but rather because you either failed to do the connection properly or the RS6 doesn't allow for this kind of hot start. There are several cars that do not let you do this kind of thing as a preventive way of avoiding colateral damage. Thirdly, the correct way of doing this is to plug the negative to something that grounds such as the car body rather than pluging to the other negative pole on the discharged battery.

But, since the engine is cold, making this could harm the engine because the oil is not warm enough to lubricate properly ( I am sorry my english is not good)
@forthereg8 жыл бұрын
+SuburbVids that's a very common misconception. The empty battery will draw amps depending on the external voltage being applied to it. Which if the alternator is running is between 13.9 to 14.4 volts. If the engine is at 600 RPM the voltage is at 14 volts ( for example ) . you can Red-line the damn engine and it will stay on the same 14 volts regardless, try it. Its the job of the voltage regulator to do that. if you draw too many amps the alternator will just put up more resistance and the ECU will put more fuel in engine to compensate the resistance and the engine RPM drop. Shmee, when you connected the 2 batteries in parallel and on the Ferrari side you only had 11.5 volts that just means your connection was not good and solid, next time just jerk the alligator clips a bit, it works like a charm. The RPM on the running car will drop for a second and you will probably see a little spark, that means you've hit the spot.
@forthereg8 жыл бұрын
+SuburbVids One other thing, attempting to start a car, specially one with a low battery which is connected to a running car will put too much strain on the rectifier diodes of the running cars alternator.
@paulsha95828 жыл бұрын
Prats! You never connect a bigger engine battery directly to a smaller engine battery because the bigger engine has a larger alternator output and it will damage the smaller battery. That's why cars have different size batteries. You can connect the negative of the jumper cable for the car recieving the jump to the engine ground and that will bring down the higher output current.
@Ben15518 жыл бұрын
+paul sha Batterys only take as much current as they can and if anything you will boil a small amount of the acid off no big deal
@mattbates70998 жыл бұрын
With the shot of the voltage showing on the dash of about 10.8v before jumpers were connected that battery has dropped a cell and needs replacing. Sometimes with high current and voltage inflow you can repolarise the cell but usually the cell will chemically neutralise within a short time leading to the same problem. Also Shmee150 be careful trying to start with a low battery as the car's computer (ECU) can be quite sensitive to voltage and the draw from the starter motor can effectively "reflash"/corrupt the EPROMs which worst case in most cars means a new engine ecu. I can't imagine that'd be a cheap fix or covered under warranty in a Ferrari...

Rev the car that's providing the power up a bit and keep it there when trying to jumpstart, an alternator produces much more current at let's say 3000rpm than it does on idle. And as many have said, don't use thin cheapo cables! I've learned that the hard way.
@user01188 жыл бұрын
I thoroughly enjoy your videos and conversation. Something that I've learned the hard way is that alternators are not designed to charge dead batteries, and it leads to premature failure of the charging system if the battery is overdue (non-working cells) or there is a parasitic drain that needs to be fixed (common, and unfortunately unfixable in many Ferraris). You already mentioned that you don't have access to a trickle charger at this location so my advice would be to disconnect the battery, making sure to have the key on your body, and that the key works with the door (when's the last time you actually unlocked the car with the key? :) ).

After watching video & reading about 40 comments here's my 2 cents worth. 1- you need heavier cables and clamps. Resistance (thinner) is the killer of current transfer, an 8 to 12 gauge is better - around 6-8 feet. 2- with such a nice stable of great autos you might try a course on auto mechanics basic engine know how. 3- this should have been titled "how not to try and jump a FOUR year old battery". You could have removed the battery, taken it to any dealer and had it checked for free. If you own any tools of sorts. And not involved anyone until absolutely necessary.

When jump starting, put the positive to the + on the battery, but put the earth (negative lead) to the engine and not the battery terminal....as soon as you load the battery from the other battery, everything electrical is fighting for the power...pulling the current away from the job in hand (starter motor). Earthing the engine will then push the current direct to the starter motor and will be much more effective.

Usually you would have to press throttle pedal from the car that is giving out currents to enable more electricity to go through since the one giving out does not generate electricity unless engine revs.

It's not just the 'better' cars that can have battery troubles. My early 90's Dodge Ram battery (barely over a year old) could lose enough terminal voltage over a few days so that, despite churning the engine over well, there wasn't enough left to get it to fire up. Fortunately I've since fitted it out as a camper van with a 40watt solar panel on the roof, a leisure battery in the back and wiring to share the output of the panel between both batteries. If I find that I'm using more power than that I've arranged things so I can add another panel of the same size to double the available power input.

I left an 458 Italia for 8 days and it was flat too, and an 430 Scud for 4 days (but this car's battery had an issue as even the tricle charger does not keep it full). Never had batteries die so fast on any other car. You really need a heavy duty charger to get the completely flat battery to charge. You also don't have to 'jump start' if you have time, just let the battery charge from the other cars battery while runnig for 20min or so, then disconnect the cables - no risk of damage.

You can buy tiny jump starter packs from eBay for around £40 that are roughly half the size of an old VHS tape. They have started every engine i've connected them too. The instructions say due to the battery technology that if it struggles to fire up on the first turn keep trying and it will eventually fire. This has happened to me and keeping on trying usually fires the car on the third of fourth attempt at most. Easy to keep one of each somewhere in each of the cars for emergency usage.

I guess that's the difference growing up poor, my Dad taught me how to jump start a car properly because he had to do it all the time due to owning shitty old cars with bad batteries and/or alternators that he couldn't afford to replace until payday came around. Next time, Just bring the revs up on the other car before trying to start the flat car. A healthy car alternator running at engine idle will generally only be producing around the same power than the car is using, so trying to start another car at idle is normally not going to work very well. Bring the revs up to over 2000 rpm where the alternator will be on the regulator, hold it there a minute or two (watch the leads don't overheat) start the flat car and away you go. Doesn't matter if the other engine is smaller it'll normally work. I wouldn't recommend starting a V12 from say, a 1600cc Mini or something of course.

TBH if you don't leave your cars on a battery conditioner when not being used for prolonged periods it will go flat (there's too many things going on in the background). my 458 has the same problem, if the battery doesn't fix it then either you have a leak somewhere in the wiring harness or on the pcb board on top of the battery there are a row of fuses make sure the fuses are not gone they are called master fuses. changing the battery myself

You should have revved the ABT at 1500 rpm or so for 15 mins to charge the FF's battery. Idle rpm, 800-1000, supplies only just enough power to maintain the ABTs systems. Alternators need to be spun a little faster than idle to give more charging voltage. When I worked on diesel/electric submarines our chargers were V16 27 litre twin supercharged diesels attached to turbo alternators. Peak normal operating current 3500 amps.

In Dublin there is a place called Cornucopia that does really nice food. Edinburgh, I'd head to Hendersons for very tasty food. They are both pretty central.

Im sorry, but search google b4 doing jump start! You look just silly! On 'idle' you can wait like hours so the dead battery has enough juice to start! After few min idling just rev up to 2-3k or 4k if you need more juice and hold it there while you start the dead car! and VOLA! On idle you get very VERY low current flowing true(not enough for the dead car), but as you rev up you get much more current and power so the jump start car gets enough current to start! RAC has high current jump battery so immidiatly the car starts - it has enough current! SIMPLE! I have not jumped started fancy cars like this, but with old ford ive jumped started much bigger cars, much newer with much bigger battery capacity successfully without any problems so the 'bigger battery' theory and trying to jump start on idle is just silly!

I see that this is posted recently before you even try to start any car doesn't matter if it's a ford pinto or a Ferrari the Reading on the voltage meter should be 13.6v with the key in the on position that is standard for any vehicle including supercars or even a diesel Truck simple fix connect the jumper cables like you did with the Audi idling for about +/- 20 minutes or until it reads 13.6v on the gauge you should be set of it cranks heavy get your friend inside the Audi and give it a little gas while you starting the FF P.S. Cool vids Love The FF. Cheers from The U.S.

Time to invest in a decent set of jump leads, Sam (thick copper with quality clamps). Oh, and give the 2nd car some revs whilst you crank the other.

You can trickle charge off of a battery pack system that you leave in the boot or front seat.....
