We love our Maligator. He's a bundle of energy on springs with teeth. Eat, Sleep, Poop, Zoom! He is never left alone to be destructive, crate trained for quite time and continues his daily training, everyday to exercise his body and mind. These dogs require COMMITMENT and you cannot slack, also really good food and LOTS of hardy toys. 🐕

Wow that is great to hear! I’ve had two males at different times, & the second one lived to be 14, he was still alert as could be but the poor guys legs were just done. Early on if I had him outside while I was using the push lawn mower, he would literally latch on to one of the front wheels with his choppers & play tug of war with a running lawn mower. No fear whatsoever! I sure miss him but at this stage in life I doubt a third one would be feasible considering how the first two were earlier on.

A good trainer makes their interactions with their dogs look effortless. What we don't see are the countless hours that person has put into practicing that bond, commitment, and training. How they have to challenge that dog daily with new enrichment activities, or run with them for an hour before the day even starts. These dogs are gorgeous powerhouses and they deserve respect.

I've had two malinois and honestly we never trained them to be precise guard dogs or anything. They were just our dogs. When they were juvenile they were biting everything but we realised with the first malinois that its almost like juvenile behavior and it can last for almost up to 3 years of age. Our second malinois was much easier on that part as she was only biting for about a year plus and by the time she was 3 she was fully dignified young lady. Honestly i find them an easy breed. Lovely dogs and honestly with how my parents raised them, they really don't need much thought to it. If you're a dog person, that's enough. The loyalty of the malinois will ensure that even if you don't discipline him or her well, they'll always know you as their owner. Super loyal dogs, when they are scared and aggressive at the vet, only the owner can calm the malinois. The way we raised them was to the point where if we put our hands in their food bowl while they were eating, they'd be almost humored by it and patiently wait while wagging their tail for us to remove our hand. All in all it wasn't anywhere as annoying as raising our English Cocker Spaniel. Like seriously malinois are easier than cocker spaniels. That's how good of a breed it is. If you're a dog person, you'll be fine.

Also it really depends on how you go about these type of dogs. Enough work dogs like BC and Shepherds are happy with some nose work, play time, normal walks and some chewing toys/treats and are WAY calmer than most poodles. And they are smart enough to learn not to chew up your house or steal your socks so easy training.

I have an American bulldog, he has lived a great life, he has a big backyard with lots of trees and animals to keep him busy, of course, he’s not outside all day he lives in the house, he’s nearing the end of his journey. He was go go go when he was younger, we made sure that he had plenty of outside and play time, and he also was our pest control. Yes, he was always up-to-date on his shots and we always made sure that he was OK but he did an amazing job, the few times he did get destructive chewing we just took him on a couple walks every day, and that worked it right out of his system.

I rescued one from a family that got to the point that the lady started beating her. I offered to take her since she was 3 months and by 5 months she finally let me take her. I tag teamed with my friend who had another malinois and helped me get her healthy and basic crate and potty trained. That little puppy transformed in a month. She was one of various pups a local idiot was breeding in our community. I was lucky to have gotten her as young as i did and having the support of two others to give her the time and our combined three animals to help her with faster socializing and getting her the guiding she needed. We found a perfect home for her with a couple who one was a vet and another a nurse. She's doing amazing now in her new home with her husky sister. They are extremely smart i hope one day to own one again, but I'm currently pregnant so it might be a few years lol

Same! If you get a Mal from a working line, there's a 90-95% chance they're going to be as he's describing. Mine is not from specifically a working line (his mom is actually a service dog, I'm hoping he will be too). But he's totally content running around the yard with my roommates dog for an hour a few times a week, and the occasional 10-15 minute walk. What this breed craves more than anything is *mental* stimulation and without that, they will indeed eat your couch.

Yes! We bought two litter mates that are half Malinois. We had to re-home one of them because she was too much. The one we kept must have more of her other breed's characteristics (supposedly they are half Bull Mastiff). She tires more easily than her sister and is rather happy-go-lucky. Her sister, on the other hand, is indefatigable. My husband would take the dogs for runs with him riding his bike and the dogs running. They would go for miles. Kiva would be ready to go again in about 15 minutes. Mavis, on the other hand, would be worn out.

Yeah- My mom got a Malinois and I haven't seen her work with him in about a week or so- She leaves all day to go work because no one shows up to work the front desk which makes her have to run the front desk and her office on the other sides of the building at the same time We've even discussed getting maybe a Dobie or a Heeler for my next dog, she's looking to get both of us protection dogs but she feels like another Malinois would just be too much for me to handle, and I'd love to have a Dobie at some point

I was soo triggered at first... 😂😂🤣🤣 Another lesson learnt... Our Mali is just 2 years old and changed my life completely. Luckily, I have an outdoors life, she comes Almost everywhere with me. And it's totally required with Malis. You cannot expect these dogs to spend much time without you. Defo not if your out 7 hours a day, completely unfair on everyone, and your house. She has the energy of the Sun. So loyal and eager to please. Great with my kids and other dogs, just as long as she is MY dog. I can't go to the toilet without her outside waiting for me. Sit down? I can't remember the last time I sat in the couch.... Seriously....

I own a malinois but she does work for me 6-7 hours a day, and I can agree for most people they are not the dog to get. But for those of you who can meet the breed requirements and give it a healthy life, this dog is freaking devoted to you. It will die for you is how devoted they are. I’ve never seen a breed like this one

I absolutely agree except the protection work thing to satisfy their „mouthyness“. I train detection dogs and they’re single use dogs, so no protection at all. And all my stuff isn’t chewed 😄

I fostered a malinois, he was on 6-7 pills a day (for Panosteitis) and severely underweight, that deer sized alligator still needed 2 hours of exercise/training a day on top of all his food given in kongs and other toys. He was fantastic but it took work.

Absolutely beautiful to see trainers advocating for breeds like. If trainers advocated for pitbulls decades ago, I'd like to believe it would save at least a small percentage of people to realize. "I can not to this dog justice, I am not the right fit. My lifestyle and free time isn't compatible for this breed." Hopefully with trainers like Garrett and their platforms, you won't have Malinios placed in failing situations like the Doberman's, Pitbulls and Rottweilers of decades past.

I work at a dog daycare - the malinois x's are extremely smart and self regulate well as well as confident for their size. Purebred are as described. So don't commit to something you can't sustain. Ty for time.

With some of them, you do. They are a mouthy breed to begin with. There are ones bred solely for bitework. Show lines are less intense. SAR, nosework, agility, etc.

@@mavel2038they are very mouthy from pups. My 4 year old as a puppy my son was 3 at the time, he liked to camp out with his toys on the kitchen table. Not that she was hurting him he just didn’t like any little nips from an 8-10 week puppy

Literally the reason I got a blue heeler mix instead of a different working breed. She's energetic and built to go all day out in the big outdoors with me and yet smaller and much easier to train than a malinois

Well said. People just get particular breeds of dogs just for sake of showing off, like most Lambos are bought for same reason. But dog is a living thing and we bear responsibility to provide for its particular needs.

She's smart enough to parallel play with the horse . She doesn't bite, nip or get any kind of crazy around them. Great dog.

I spend every free hour I have exercising my malinois just so at 8pm I get an hour of relaxing and watching Netflix. That is after an average of about 4-5 miles of biking, hiking, snowshoeing, ski joring or swimming, and then we wrestle, and play ball. You must play with the ball, all day.

We have a girl, absolutely correct, she’s been training ever since she was a puppy and even now is still going through training. Very active, she’s walked around 2-3 times a day, loads of mental stimulation but she’s in our family and gets on well with little children and other dogs, also have another one, he’s still a puppy in training, love them both ❤️

I have a Belgian Malinois, husky, Blue Heeler, coyote mix. Even though he's a mutt, he's a great protection dog and would be very crazy if I didn't spend all of my time working with him and letting him burn off energy. It's a little bit harder because he's partially coyote so he's extremely vocal and yips a lot, but with things like husky it makes him more stubborn and then with the added herding dog instincts, it just makes it all the better! But you did a great job of explaining the Belgian Malinois breed! 🤣😅❤

I worked at a doggie daycare where we boarded one of these for a week. Any time you got close to his "room" he would begin to violently spin in circles at scary velocity. I always pushed open his door real slow and careful bc i was afraid he'd just bash his skull into it without care. My assumption is that he was used to crate life, and so he perfected how to spin in the TIGHTEST of circles and do it for who knows how long. Tasmanian devil is right. That dog had crack cocaine for blood and a screw loose.

What you're saying about the Malinois is 100% correct but i found the perfect mixture: 50% Belgian Malinois 50% Old German Shepherd Dog The OGSD cancels out some of the hyperactive tendencies and the BM cancels some of the residual illnesses of the GSD. That being said: I live of 4 hours sleep a night on a 8.000 m² property because at 4 AM that paneuropean snuffledog demands "OPEN THE DOOR I GOTTA GO PATROL THE BORDERS!". All of his siblings are police working dogs so no wonder he has a chip in his snout err on his shoulder, no Oskar i didn't have any chips, go back to sleep!
