@@hermesten1000 Unfortunately you are very right. We enjoyed a much better Canada 30 plus yrs ago. I was taught to not touch the gun unless my Dad or Mom was there. The gun was left out because I was taught to not touch and then I was taught proper use of the guns. That included cleaning them as well. Guns in our home were no different than having automotive tools laying around. We understood them and respected them. This is one of the biggest problems now a days we dont educate anyone on anything anymore. I mean what kind of a country doesn't educate the kids on how to use their money properly. Kids get out of school and get their first job and they have no idea how to save money and invest it properly. The Gov wants to keep it's people ignorant broke and defenseless. Talk about devide and concur. The fucked up thing is they are doing it to their own people. How did we end up with a gov that has absolutely no respect for their own people? I am disgusted with the canadian gov. They are sending us out to be slaughtered by whomever decides one day to grab an illegal firearm and start shooting again. If we still educated our children on the use and care of a gun they would be not only able to protect themselves but they could be on hand to help patch up that time delay that the RCMP have when they are called. Is it so absurd to imagine that their are a good number of people in this beautiful country that are capable of protecting there fellow man and women until the cavalry shows up? Maybe its jealousy ? These cops now a days are young and not of the same callibure that they used to be. This slows down the response time to a shooting I'm sure. When someone kicks your door in while you and the mrs. Are watching the tv. You are fucked brother. Unless you have a loaded pistol sitting right beside you and you are very well versed on how to pick it up imidietly and point and shoot you and your mrs. Are both dead. The cops have no say they do not factor into the equation at all.we need to all be educated on what guns are and how to safely use them like the old days. I for one will not be killed in my own livingroom because that punk TRUDEAU wants his henchmen to deal with things even though he knows dam well they have no chance what so ever of making it on time. I'm not even waiting for him to try. He wont be happy until he has the biggest kill count out of all the useless prime ministers that have had a crack at ruining our beautiful country. @@kodiakwoodworks9359 I think the gun tradition you describe for Canada 30 years ago is still pretty much the tradition in many states here in the US. It pretty much is here in Texas...though not quite like it was back in 1966 when people in downtown Austin pulled rifles out of their cars and returned fire on the sniper in the University of Texas tower. OTOH, it's difficult to make a direct comparison. You could have loaded rifles and shotguns in your vehicle back then, but there was no concealed or open carry of handguns. You could legally possess a handgun in your car if you were a "traveler," which was more or less defined as crossing county lines. I was going to say you have the solace of knowing there is less violent crime in Canada than in the US but that is only partially true. If you live in a rural area in the US the violent crime rate is about the same as in Canada. The rate is irrelevant though if you're the victim. Everyone has as human right to defend themselves even if a government denies it.

@@burny6666 Most of your comment is not factual with reguard to the Homicide rate in the USA. School shootings do not occour as frequently as you claim "weekly" in the USA. Having lived in both Canada and the USA and working in the Criminal Justice field I'le take living in the USA anyday over living in Canada. For years my Canadian relatives would come to the USA for buying clothing for their family and even medical treatment with the Canadian failure of it's Socialist rationed system. You are correct that owning a gun in Canada was and is not a Fundamental Right. Americans do have the natural right to Defend themselves and their homes from both man and beast if necessary to include with the last resort use of Firearms if needed. Such is not the case in Canada. Canada's alleged "Free Speech", Protest, laws also fall way short of the USA's as well as having no Double Jeopardy clause or the Right to Life Liberty and the Pursuit of Happeness. The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms fails to offer the more broader indepth protections that the US Bill of Rights does for people. burny6666, the US is a big country. Yes, the overall homicide rate is three time that of Canada. New Hampshire’s rate is about half that of Canada’s. What’s interesting is in New Hampshire one can carry a concealed or open firearm with no permit whatsoever. Yet, there is no bloodbath of any kind of homicide, from shootings to bludgeonings. If a cop shoots a criminal in a gun-free school zone, that and many other non-intuitive shootings get counted as a school shooting. One can cherry pick statistics all day. The fact remains that Canadians have been prohibited from practicing their right to self defense. A lot of Nova Scotians just paid the ultimate price for that feel-good prohibition.

Castro's illegitimate Son, the RCMP, and CBC have been saying that the weapons used in the mass killing, were all from the United States. If this is true, then they must've been smuggled across the Canadian Border right past the Canadian Border Services Agency. The shooter was not legally able to buy or possess any firearms in Canada. So, which is it? The murderer didn't follow the laws of his home country and / or the laws of the United States? I believe the shooter accessed the weapons up in Canada and NOT the United States. Castro Junior wants to spread his form of Communism down to the United States by spinning this false narrative. Either way, the shooter broke existing laws in possibly two different countries (if true). He stole a RCMP Uniform and bought an actual RCMP decommissioned car. How is any of this the fault of legal gun owners either in Canada or the United States?

Facts don't matter. Logic doesn't matter. The point is to disarm the law abiding, not to stop criminals. Crime is just the foil by which they make a plausible excuse to achieve that objective. When the law abiding are disarmed, the lawless rule.

It’s easy to smuggle into Canada. The border is huge, some of our farms overlap the border. I’ve driven in an out of the US for years over dirt and not roads and never see border guards either US or Canadian. Also boats landing along the coast esp the west coast. Lots of open territory that has minimal patrol. Again know people that cross boarders that was just private fishing, or pleasure boating. The border is huge and not really defended. Also native reserves overlap the border and the police in the US and Canada stay out of those areas.

Hrsplit Hr, I can't even fathom what it must be like to have to live ur life with the notion that anyone could kick down ur front door and enter ur home where ur family is and you are expected to just be at their mercy and hope they don't harm anyone. God forbid you injure the homeinvader. That is utterly ridiculous. If I haven't opened my front door and invited you into my home then you're an intruder and obviously not welcome and here in the U.S. you can bet they're getting a bullet in the head as soon as they cross that threshold. What keeps the criminal from just robbing and/or killing to obtain everything they want or need if they know that they don't even have to worry about the possibility of death while doing so. Total rights to the criminals and zero for the citizens. A kindergarten could write better laws than that insanity. As a canadian thank you so much to you and your guest. Intelligent discourse is refreshing in emotion driven times like this. I want to see this turn into not a pro-gun movement in canada, but a pro personal liberties movement. The fact that we as canadians, in a country where half of us live 20 min or more from a dispatch, are not legally allowed to defend our homes and loved ones is a joke. Canada never demanded its freedom, we were gifted it and this kind of "big brother knows best and protects" garbage is a mind set left over from when we were part of something MUCH bigger than just Canada and that force had (maybe has) a vested interest in us remaining unarmed and weak as individuals. Ive said it a 1000 times but here is it again.... An armed populace puts a PRICE on tyranny. In a situation where a tyrannical force is deciding whether to harm a group of people there must be a price on that decision beyond "how many buses do we need to move em all"... ugh.. I have just been ranting left and right since this happened lol

Prior to the 89' shooting Canadians could own Automatic Firearms. Since then, we can own AR's and CZ's/VZ's but only Semi-Auto. Centerfire Firearms are limited to 5 round mags in a rifle, but Pistols can have 10 round mags. Rimfire rifles are unlimited in terms of magazine capacity, but Pistols are limited to 10. Follow? Confusing? Kinda. All Rifles and Pistols that fall in the "Restricted" category must be stored with a trigger lock, and in a case or locker designed for Firearms, with a lock. Ammo is stored separately. Also, Restricted Firearms (AR's, SBR's, Pistols) may only be fired at a approved range. It is ILLEGAL to have in your possession, or fire them anywhere else. And they have to be stored in the same manner while transporting them to and from a Range. And you need a ATT (Authorization To Transport) to take them to and from a Range!! Wow Eh? Firearms may not be used for personal protection. If someone breaks into your house with a firearm, you could probably use one for protection, and win in court. But you would have to unlock the case, take off the trigger lock, produce a charged magazine, load it into the firearm, chamber a round, take aim, and fire. Yourself or your family could be dead by that point. Stupid and foolish law? Yes.

Ex-Canadian cop here. I've always been in favour of normal, sane, vetted and trained people to be able to carry firearms for self-defense. It wasn't long after I was out of rookie school that I saw people who had been raped, or dead or dying from violent crimes. I noted that we were good at being janitors for the cleanup duty after the crimes had been committed, but the victims were unable to defend themselves because the government said, "We'll protect you." Obviously, they "misspoke." The politicians would all say how outrageous and heinous the crimes were, the senior police personnel, on camera, would say the same things, and nothing would change, except the increasing body count and surviving victims count. No, "we'll still protect you" and other lies were trotted out in the 15 second sound bites. This latest round of gun control, ostensibly for our own protection, is the latest round of politicians pandering to gun-control groups, and it does zero for crime control or curbing smuggling activities. Criminals, as we all know, don't follow the laws. Only law-abiding people do. I know how long it takes to respond to high priority calls, as does every police officer. It's a very, very long time, assuming someone can get to the phone before they're killed. But no, you can't be your own first responder here in Canada, even though it is provided for in the law. Thank you for this podcast; you made some very good points, and contrasted the differing systems that are in place in our respective countries. The spree shooter last month in Nova Scotia was nuts, clearly. Nothing could have stopped him from doing what he did. He used the police uniform and vehicle and capitalized on the trust people have in our police, and then used it against them. THAT is pure evil, and no law can protect against that. So, right on cue, the Prime Minister and his sycophant minions did an end-run around Parliament, and banned all the "assault rifles," which has no legal definition; it's merely parroting equally uninformed US politicians to scare the uninformed public.
