Shooting flat is great when the dynamic range of your scene exceeds that of your recording container, unfortunately lots of times scenes actually fit quite nicely in that container and that's when shooting flat shoots you in the foot. This video should show some pretty good evidence on why that's the case.

Which is why I shoot with the BMPCC4K. I get the FILM (BRAW) format, which amounts to file sizes that are 1/3 the size of ProRes files, yet with the power of RAW. Mmm, mmm, good.

This could explain why sun times my vlog footage from my Panasonic Eva1 is so noisy when shooting a low key scene

If you want way more technical details on this, I'd recommend watching Alistair Chapman's two hour lecture on the FS5, he explains this in an insane level of detail. A lot of people, even professional DoPs, seem to buy into the "log good, 709 bad" philosophy, it's often my job as a Digital Imaging Technician to dissuade people from shooting log, especially slog.

Very true. I know many vids who refuse to shoot in anything but log, even in low light, where log WILL NOT grade.

Professional DPs usually shoot on high-end cameras, where banding and artifacts are not an issue. Only cooking shows are being shot in 709

Good one ! I've been spending years telling my clients to stop throwing Log for every situation. I'll send them this video next time. Will save me some frustration...

Dude. I’m watching it on an iPhone 7 and I can see how awful it is! Thankfully I’ve sort of moved into my own Cine-2 profile, so log is reserved for tricky situations. But I had no idea just how much is involved here. Thank you!

If you are working with Sony S-log 8 bit footage, it helps to crank up saturation to max (+32) in camera and then decrease it accordingly in post (in DaVinci Resolve about 23-27 with luma mix set to 0). This helps a lot with color banding and espacially with those ugly magenta and green blotches. The difference is not only seen by eye but also with a vectorscope. You will see a much more even saturation gradation on your scope.

Important information. Thanks so much! My take away is that if the scene I'm shooting is not that contrasty to begin with, it may be better to not use a log profile while shooting it.

terrifyingly enlightening. Important to be aware of the artifacts of Log shooting .... but just terrifying to have to be aware of so many factors when shooting. But yes ... banding and visible compression is such a problem that ruins many shootings.

Just great content! I really appreciate your efforts on your videos, Sir. I don't care for opinions that much, instead I am greatly interested on why things happen the way they do. And how I can use that information to make my images better, for that matter. Pro shooters need to test they gear and their settings, and that is not possible if they do not know the science (and numbers) behind all of it. So, I thank you sincerely and look for more great tutorials!

So as an easy rule could we just state: Dont use S-log when shooting in 8-bit!

does reucing contrast in camera increase dynamic range or just make shadows more viewable.

Hey man. In the Sony A73 for example. Adjusting your camera setting with saturation all the way up in camera in the Slog2 profile it fixes the colour artefacts. Also try doing this is ACES or aces node setup, I believe that fixes the colour artefacts too. Give it a test. :-)

The angle of view is determinant, long focal lengths looks more pale by itself and don't need as much dynamic range cropping largely the FOV. Saturation artefacts apart, LOG luminance for me has more realistic style even with 16 bit photography.
