@gamesontv31516 жыл бұрын
True Ogre I said 36 can you read? And of course Klay would take Curry’s match ups, if Tim Duncan took David Robinson’s match up does that mean David Robinson’s a bad defender? No just that Tim Duncan’s an elite defender. In my opinion curry is a slightly above average defender that’s too jumpy to ever be an elite defender and that’s why he gets crosses

Well unless he wants to rant about looney narratives like an idiot that really have little to do with reality and make outlandish claims with no evidence I don’t think he is ESPN material these days. They are “trendy” and marketed to more casual and less educated fans and this type of stuff doesn’t seem to be appealing to their vision. I think it would be great and educational and be good for fans of all levels at actually really understanding basketball more but that isn’t what they are pushing mostly. Their advanced analysis is just really trash. Not that the staff is incapable of more in depth and meaninful coverage that can also reach broad audience... well at least some of them are capable I would bet, but they frame statistics, analytics, and analysis in a really convoluted cookie cutter way. I’d love to see better or even real analysis in sports journalism more. It just seems to be trending in the opposite direction unfortunately and stuff like this obviously doesn’t mesh with a lot of the baseless insane nonsense they spout off as “analysis” and would undermine their crazy narratives so It seems hard for me to see them wanting something like this. No knock against Scotshot. I think he does a great Job and breaks down very important things you pretty much won’t really hear in the sports media quite well. I just don’t know if ESPN is realistic not because they are so lofty or it’s such a big deal, a major player, but because they don’t seem to want anything like this. But it gives me more appreciation for people like this trying to take a look at things and go over stuff that would otherwise be overlooked or inaccessible to people because it’s good important stuff I wish popular “Sports analysis” did feature a lot more of.

I never heard someone explaining this ever. I totally agree with this concept. Eversince, I practice jump shot in the midrange (releasing the ball on the top of my jump) while doing an early release shot in a longer range. It is just a little difficult to master both with consistency because of a different type of shot.

I'm glad someone else noticed this phenomenon about shooting ! I would also like to add that you should also have 2 different set points from 2 and 3.For example if you shoot a wide open 3 your set point is probably somewhere around nose / forehead area,but for contested 2's it is better for the set point to be at least above the forehead,so u avoid getting blocked and you transfer power easier.

When I was young. I was only using the release at height of your jump. I was amazing mid range and not good at 3s. But I had to teach myself this exact concept with no one telling me. When I turned 19, I became an excellent 3 point shooter due to releasing on the way up and this adjustment was very difficult. I discovered this in 2008-2009. It changed my life and allowed me to stay a mid range monster but also a knock down 3 point shooter. This information is 100 percent valid.

Great video - thank you! One thing I might add though: You don' t shoot with your arm: this is what so many beginners are mistaken - neither the two motion nor really the one motion. You see it so many times on amateur and beginners level that they are throwing the ball rather than shooting it. You do everything with the snap of your wrist and your arm simply follows through.

i jump higher, don't hold my follow thru often, and don't put as much arc when i shoot mid range. when I shoot threes I dip the ball more, jump less off the ground, jump more forward, shoot higher, and I try to hold my follow thru as often as possible.i can use my 3 pt. form at mid range if wide open but its just easier to shoot the other way due to game speed

you want to practice putting more arc on your midrange since your more likely to have to shoot over defenders. And you don't really want to have a high arc on your 3s as that's more energy required to get the ball to the hoop. But at the end of the day as long as the ball goes in the basket

@_Maxten6 жыл бұрын
+Popshot Gaming i overshoot when I hold my followthrough in the mid range- ESPECIALLY from the corner- because i really explode when I pull up. not holding it helps me get it off quicker. (that jerry west shot) I've experimented with trying to hold my follow through constantly but what happens is i get too much power from my jump so i have to release later to alleviate it. you'll notice that players like russell westbrook, paul george, carmelo anthony all explode pulling up at mid so they don't hold their follow throughs either. its just a thing that helps balance out the power for people who jump like that

Very good analysis. It makes a lot of sense. To be a complete offensive player and reach your full individual offensive potential you have to be able to use both- 1 and 2 motion shots. Often if you come of a off ball screen or shoot of the dribble from 3-pt range it becomes a two motion shot as well.

This makes quite a lot of sense to me. I make shots from the three point range and when shooting the same way from mid range, the shots are too strong. I thought about it and realized that the ball had to be shot differently from both ranges. I do in fact have an early release shot from deep, but I do see now what I could do differently in order to become more efficient at mid range. Thanks a lot for this video, awesome analysis with evidence, cannot argue with that :)

yooo this was the validation i needed, my midrange was really good at one point since i was using the 2 motion shot (contested, fadeaways or just pull ups) but with the same shot my 3 pointers was never consistent. I then changed my shot to accommodate the 3 point shot but my midrange suffered especially in games watching this vid makes perfect sense to me as Kyrie one of the best midrange shooters changes his shot. people would always tell me to keep the same shot but even those people weren't good at shooting from both spots as they just focused on 3s n drives. So great vid i'm gonna change my 3 point shooting so as to be great on both.

Man I always had a killer J from mid range but was a below average 3 point shooter.. I had actually started working on a one motion shot for my threes and I thought it helped but some of my teammates noticed that I was shooting two different shots and started to ridicule me so I abandoned the idea. I'm glad to know that this is an actual thing so now I'll go back to working on it.
@Kombaiyashii6 жыл бұрын
You've helped my shot so much, I used to have to put as much power as possible into my three, but now I'm finding that I'm developing too much power and hitting off the back of the iron when I miss. Because of this, I've added a lot more arch and trying to soften it a bit more. I dabbled a little with a thumb flick but I don't feel I need the power and it really complicated the shot, maybe one day. Anyway, I just wanted to say thanks!
@rayallinkh6 жыл бұрын
another point worth mentioning: when doing a catch & shoot, you'll naturally have a good balance when you start the shooting motion, thus an early release shot is great. When you shoot off the dribble, you'll need that split second in the air to find your balance. The pause is great for balancing and aiming in the air, that is when you need the late release shot.
@ScotShotBasketball6 жыл бұрын
Yes this is another factor

As someone who has switched to the one motion, what i find that works right now is instead of using a 2 motion in the mid range, come to a stop off a downhill move and use a one motion shot from there. Things like pull backs or same leg stops r good for this. If u try a regular 1-2 footwork its very tough to use 1 motion with that. Basically it can be used as a counter to going to the rim and getting cut off...if u get near the free throw line or a step in the paint u might as well float it up tho I think this is good in order to keep continuity in ya form so u don't mix up ya muscle memory. If u can find the balance btwn the two and develop both equally more power to u tho

i totally agree, i can add that the arm release position differ, first one early release one motion the arm must be about 20-30 degree from vertical so the power of the early release is transferred to the arm in the right direction, if it in vertical position it looses all the power. in the second shot 2 time motion the arm at the release is at vertical level to the ground, because all the jump energy is transferred to the vertical jump and not to the arm, if the arm is inclined you will lose the ball or make a bad shot

2 shots is a start. The more shots you have though... the more efficient your other options will get. My personal version of a COMPLETE shot list (I don't have all these shots mastered by the way) is: 1. Standard open shot (usually going to be from the 3 point line) 2. Off the dribble quick release shot (Usually going to be done in the form of a faked drive or a step-back) 3. Tear-drop (Best option for when you get your opponent in the air or when the help defense is coming from the 5 spot but isn't there yet) 4. Hook shot (Even if it's just from 6 feet away, the hook-shot is an option that keeps the defense in proper position under the basket or your defender will simply give you the strong side [since the hook is the only real way to score on the strong side with a body on you... so if you don't have the hook, the person you're posting up will simply cheat away from the shooting hand]) 5. Free-throw (most similar to the standard open shot, except you not only can do whatever form you want, but you also have all the time in the world. The standard open shot, you have to invest in some rhythm, but the free-throw, you can sacrafice rhythm for a more replicable form [such as underhanded if you want]) 6. Off-the-dribble 3 pointer (Similar to the quick release except instead of usually being off the stepback, it's going to usually be off a lateral movement such as a screen) 7. Back-foot fade (DIRK) 8. reverse footing quick release. This one is the least important, but the most difficult. This is for emergency situations when you can't get the proper footing, so you have to launch with the wrong foot forward. Keep in mind, MOST of the difference between these shots is footwork. Footwork is VERY important

(5’2”) I love doing mid range turnaround fade aways a la Kobe/Kyrie and I make a good bit of them but I noticed I shoot them as I’m coming down just like this vid showed. I think I transferred that habit to when I’m shooting regular long range shots and I’m always trying to overcompensate and using too much arm and wrist but not shooting fast and as I’m coming up using my leg momentum. Anyway all this to say I hit a shitload more long range shots and was more accurate rather than flinging it all over the place. Great vid!

Kobe used two motion to shoot 3s, which in my opinion, was a piece of beautiful artwork too

A floater/runner is't necessarily "faster than even a 1 motion shot." The example you showed of Curry was not what I would call a typical floater, because he does not get much height or forward motion on the jump. That looked essentially like a soft jump shot where he was too far to scoop the ball, but he could get off a light jump shot with a quick release. I would posit that the more common/classic floater is more akin to an extreme 2 motion shot. Because of the strong jump and forward motion towards the hoop, you need to input very little power to the ball with your arm. So you can extend the ball farther/higher in the first step. The basic idea I have is that you quickly get the ball as high as you can, as early as you can, starting the reach during the jump and extending the ball to near maximum extension/elevation over your head with just your dominant hand/arm. You now have huge elevation on the ball and it is hard to get blocked. But if you want to have any control over the release, you then have to wait until the extension phase is over with, the ball has settled down in your palm, and you have hit or just passed the apex of your jump. From this point, a tiny bit of lift from the shoulder along with the wrist flip is all you need to finish the motion. Depending on your hop and forward motion/distance, you might even have to kill the wrist flip. Just the little bit of shoulder extension to get the proper arc on the shot, no wrist flip, at all. Just let go of the ball. This is what I consider the classic floater. The beauty of it over a straight up/down late release is (in addition to getting your release higher and closer to the basket) it puts you in perfect position and momentum to crash your own boards, in case you miss. From my own perspective, this is the closest feeling to dunking from the freethrow line that a dude with a 12" vertical will ever get. Up through the moment of relaxation and free-hanging in full extension/height, I imagine the motions are the same you would use to dunk the ball.

what a great video! You put into words and explained pretty much the same thing I found out myself while playing basketball over the years. It was really interesting to hear this detailed explanation. I would just add that jumping higher while shooting also helps you to stop on a dime and get your balance better than shooting and releasing ball on the way up. Basically if you want to shoot a pull up jumper (drive - stop - shoot) you pretty much must jump high and have a two motion (apex release) jump shot in order to be more balanced and shot over the top of the defense. Alternative would be a pull back jumper, if you want to stay with 1 motion j-shot.

First, shooting STARTS and ENDS with the wrist, forearm and elbow. Master this first near the hoop so you will not need additional power from the legs. If you can consistently shoot near the hoop AND can FEEL the ball will go in OR miss just after the release, then THAT is the only time you can move away from the hoop. Do this incrementally until you need additional power to shoot the ball. And this is the time to use your legs as a source of power.(To add range to your shot or to shoot over a defender) In mid range shot, you use your legs to shoot OVER the defender; In long range shot, you use your legs to have power to the shot. Master the basics first before attempting to master to shoot a range shot. I see many players practicing to shoot far from the basket even if they CAN'T shoot consistently near the hoop. (I am one of those, the first time I hold a basketball) lol

I have a 3rd interior shot where I extend my arms fully to get above the D and use only follow through to power the ball the short distance to the hoop. A lot of players don't do this and get rejected more often than they should. Grant Williams is a good example of this as he's short and not explosive enough to get his shot off inside without this technique.

Since i am getting old i transitioned to a 1 motion shot but realized coming out of the dribble mid range that there is so much Power, no way you can control that. So thx for the video! Both are needed or maybe i quit mid range and work on my paint skills 😂

I've always struggled with my freethrows but never had trouble with midrange jumpshots. After watching a couple of your videos I decided to emulate Curry's form. While it did improve my freethrows and 3-points significantly, my fadeaways...let's just say it fade away. So a couple of bad games after that I just decided for midrange I'll stick to Kobe's, freethrows and 3 pointers Curry's. I did struggle the first few times but after that the hoop just seems too big.

Funny I found this video while discovering it for myself. Its true, one is more of a set shot, mostly used on spot ups or stationary shots from three. The other is like the kobe or Jordan type shot, where you pull up in someones face and can elevate and get the shot off in motion or off a dribble. This is what seperates players going from high school to college and college to pros, the ability to use the second shot and get your shot off when using dribble pull ups

I've noticed this myself before. I utilize both of these types of shots, but sometimes they vary. For example, sometimes when I'm very tightly guarded in the mid-range I'll add a slight double-pump, or when I pull up from 3 from running I might use a later release, because otherwise I might use too much power. My free throw is also a bit different from either of those shots.

Great video👍🏽 Easily the clearest and most relevant breakdown I've seen. But I don't know that a one-motion, early-release shooter should practice two-motion mid range shots. Rather, the two-motion, delayed-release could be seen as an in-game, situational response. It's true that a two-motion shot helps you shoot over the top, whereas one-motion's more about speed. But it's also important that one-motion shooters - as you mentioned - should prioritize footwork rather than higher releases for separation. Again: excellent video. Keep this up🏆

Thats why they were inefficient shooters from outside, MJ changed his release one season (before the line was shortened) and had a more fluid jump and then shot before the arc not his usual middy and he shot 37% that's kinda elite for a shooter who grew up without a 3 point line.
