I am glad that you are teaching us this! I am having some trouble trying to make my green leaves look like a nice green (and trying to figure out how to add the best shadow color without having to go too bold). Because I have learned just how hard it is to make leaves look real (and I keep hearing about how green isn't the nicest color in a painting (an artist once explained about how artists will most often add other colors to the leaves, to make them look better)). I am glad that I can learn so many things from other artists on KZbin 🙂.

It struck me, especially when you mentioned using blue for your white flowers - could purple and blue work because of the sky? Like since Earth's atmosphere gives mountains a blue cast (purple mountains majesty with poetic license) shadowed areas would have a cool tone to them?

I loved this video and remember the first time I learned about applying colors, opposite each other on the color wheel, and how it brightened my results and made me happy. Thank you for reinforcing this practice. I also want to mention that after watching several of your videos, your enthusiasm and encouragement pushed me forward on an old unfinished canvas. I had only put one layer of acrylic color on it, YEARS ago. (explained later) I was playing with ANOTHER unfinished piece I had attempted on watercolor paper with gouache. First time with this medium. Awful looking greens all over the paper. (yuck) I started to take it off the board I had taped it to, getting ready to toss it in the trash. THEN, I heard a "voice" telling me that this was an opportunity. I took out some acrylic paint, that I am much more confident with and painted flowers and a vase all over that green. I had leftover paint on my palette. I hate to waste paint. So I took out that old canvas, mentioned at the beginning of this long comment, and started applying the paint with an old credit card. Then I realized that there were all kinds of marks I could make with just that card. I used up all the paint. What I have now is a background that I am now feeling inspired to finish as "My Summer Garden." I can't wait to see what happens next! Thank you, Kristi!

It is not that hard to learn how to work in layers. Glazing is actually layering with transparent colours. In order to achieve that you have to start with the lighter colours and proceed to the darker ones. If you paint a lemon for example start with a very pale yellow wash, wait for this to dry while you are painting something else on the same painting and then go back with another layer of somewhat darker colour to start build the shape of your lemon.

Kristy, what a lovely video and so instructive and encouraging. I teach painting classes and spcifically a class called The Magical Color Wheel. I want the participants to be introduced to the principles of color theory but I also want them to feel free too explore color and find out what happens when you mix colors (yellow and purple) as opposed to just grabbing a ready made brown, let's say. This video did a wonderful job of encouraging that. The additions of colors (reds and pinks) to the edges of leaves really added dimension and interest to an already delightful painting. I think I am hooked - will be watching more/all of your videos.

Hi, I've watched a few of your videos lately, and find them interesting. I am particularly interested in the use of complimentary colours and such to create more interesting shadows than greys, browns or blacks straight out of the paint box. I would LOVE to see a more realistic bunch of lemons. I once wanted to paint water over stones in blue/green shallows but although the word "glazes" was in my mind I had no idea how to create or use them, or even much idea of what they were. And every time I tried to seek out lessons or even just tips on Glazes, I continually got told I needed to start at the beginning, and things like "it takes years". I gave up with such ideas and moved into 3D modelling... I am now ancient, and don't have enough life left to spend a lifetime learning one thing. So your ideas and insights are fascinatingly intriguing! Thank you so much for posting your videos. I enjoy them tremendously!

I actually learned colour theory from my mom, she was a freelance artist and she taught me all about contrast and analogous colours when I was a kid, i used them to make great depth for my colouring contest entries by layering crayola markers and coloured pencils, won so many contests just because I knew about colour theory and shadows. Now that I've learned to draw (started at the beginning of 2021 and am now pretty good), I can use colour theory to colour my own work.
