Been a transit bus operator for just over 8 years now, and yes, I remember being at the bottom of the seniority pile. It took a lot of digging to find what tiny little scraps of good work I could find. Had to deal with some nasty hours and people, but I hung in there and now sign things I really enjoy. People can take a lot out of you *if you let them.* My strategy has always been about focusing on the life outside of my work that this job gives me. Compared to the life I had before becoming a bus operator, things are rosy. Even with all we encounter everyday, it’s still good money, and I can afford to have the life I want, which is: *Own a home* *travel* *Great medical/dental/vision* *Great Retirement* AND MOST OF ALL *I don’t have to take my work home with me.*

You paint a very beautiful picture. I have an uncle working transit in Nice of Long Island New York and I work at Palmtran of west palm beach, my father was a nice bus operator as well but died in the pandemic of 2020. I wonder sometimes if I’m in the right business. I’m 3 years in and under our contract it take 8 long years to get to top pay at $29.00 an hour I’m right now at $19.96 an hour my uncle is like at $35.00 an hour and I’m just hoping that it’s all worth it in the end. Again you articulate a meaningful message.

@@rosekiller123 Yes. Hang in there, it gets better. Yikes! It takes 8 years to top out at $29/hr? We top out at just over $37, and it only takes 3 years. Plus you get ) $7500 bonus pay for being hired (conditions apply). Nevertheless, just look at the long term, and it will all come out in the wash. If it doesn’t, it’s okay. This line of work isn’t for everyone.

I've been an operator for about 14 months now. I drive into work telling myself "I'm gonna have a really good day today", I almost always go home happy. So long as I have either/and good recovery or good runtime, I'm pretty content. 70% of my riders say thank you when they get off the bus. It's rare (less than once every couple months) I have an even sorta negative rider interaction. Most people are either nice or ignore me, and I'm down for either.

I have a rule about people running for buses and not being at stops : I won’t wait cause if they’re careless about being on time guarantee they won’t care to have fare either
@LuckyCharms777

Yep, my rule too. I’ll make the occasional exception, but 90% of the time, nope, especially since they often take too long because they won’t have their fare ready so they make you late. I’m not going to make people miss their transfers and miss my break because they couldn’t be on time.

I had a bus driver leave me because I could not run over fast enough, groceries in hand. I had just gotten off another bus and this other bus was my connection. Met the driver at the corner, and wave to her that I wanted to get onto the bus. She couldn't pick me up at the corner so she pointed to the bus stop on the other side of the street down the road. She stopped and waited for me there, I was running but could not run all the way and had to start walking and she pulled off and left me there. Had to wait 30 minutes for the next bus to go home.

I'm honestly starting to hate my job. Been driving or 6 years. I don't know what else to do if I quit.. but it's mostly due to passengers that treat me like shit and I'm just trying to do my job and go home at the end of the day like everyone else. People just have it in their brain to automatically hate on bus drivers.

Don’t tolerate it. If they’re abusing you, stop the bus, open the doors, and tell them the bus isn’t going anywhere with them on it. Give them a few minutes to quit bitching and finally get off, and if they don’t call dispatch for a supervisor or transit police to remove them for causing a disturbance and harassing you.

Just started working transit. Got my CDL B through the company last week. I got my first schedule yesterday and it was so crappy. There was so little to pick from that the manager just handed me the schedule and said there's nothing else to choose from. I quit right then and there. Told them call me if they want me to work part time and fill in on day shifts. That whole seniority Union stuff is dumb. They should pick routes and shifts from a hat.. luck of the draw. Let the ones with seniority draw first. That's why there are shortages. No new drivers want to come in to lower pay, worst routes and worst time schedules their first few years.

Bus culture in Japan is completely different. Everyone is polite. You enter the bus from the back, and pay the driver up front as you leave. Fares are calculated based on where you got on, and there is an updated sign that tells you how much to pay based on what stop you were on. I don't know how they do it, but the Japanese bus drivers seem to know if you didn't pay the right amount.

After driving the bus for 26 years in NYC it is one of the most unappreciated jobs ever. People just think it's an easy job because they just see you sitting there. And they say all you do is sit on your azz all day. If you're thin skinned it's not the job for you. I put up with all the passengers nonsense. But the one thing I vowed not to take. Almost as if they expect the bus to be filthy & smelly then when they encounter my bus they are dumbfounded and can't refute their disdain for public transport. I have been a bus driver for nearly 20 years and I can honestly say it is not a job I would recommend. If you have a family (thankfully I don't), forget it because you won't get to see them. I've been threatened, spat at, shot at (yes that's right), bricks thrown at the bus and often work 12-13 hour days sometimes with as little as 8.5 hours between shifts. I've seen many good mates die early because of the job as a result of obesity, heart attack, stroke etc. What makes matters worse is the pay is shite and management don't give a damn about the drivers. If I could turn back time, there is no way I would be a bus driver.

Saw a video says if you're from NYC you got 5 type of drivers.1 the cool one, which is the one that just don't care if you ask him he will be like sure go ahead, the 2nd one the attitude aka staring at you! 3rd one is the one that ask all these questions like where is your MetroCard? Why you don't have your MetroCard? Like OMG the 4th is the one that already knows the drill like if you ask him for a ride even if try he will just wave you through! 5th one omg do not ask the 5th one do not even attempt to board to ask he is the one always wearing sunglasses all the time and takes his job very serious if you get on his bus you better pay.

Hi. One thing that I had heard from a friend who used to drive a bus is that a passenger had complained to them that the bus didn't arrive on time, according to the Transit app. I don't think that person even used the app correctly and just looked up their route and closed the app, thinking that the bus will arrive exactly 5 minutes from when they had checked the schedule. I had learned to let the app run and start Go and select my stop I am getting off at and leave it alone and let the app do what it is supposed to do. The same thing with Moovit and using directions to a specific location, just start it and as long as notifications are on, we're cool. Hopefully other riders know about how to use both apps and are not going to tell a bus driver, that they had arrived too late, because the app said they would be there in 5 minutes.

Can't say for other mass transit but MTA buses do have a policy to let passengers off the bus along the route between the hours 10:30 pm to 5:00 am even if its not a bus stop. Catch is the passenger needs to let the driver know where they want to get off before hand and the driver deems the location to be safe. Also this rule does not apply to express and SBS buses but not sure about limited bus routes.

One con with the company I work for seniority is king. We have a bump system meaning drivers that been out for a period of time, They can come back and take any assignment from any one under them. And it causes a chain reaction smh

That’s horrible!! So they can literally take your run from you?? People schedule life and family around what they pick so that sounds really messed up!

@@BusDriverLife oh it is especially because we can toss our assignment and work the board. So people will bump your assignment and toss it. And you have to bid for it with the whole division. I hate getting bump seeing my assignment up for bid 2 weeks later smh

@@BusDriverLife I know people who have placed a bid when we do our bids. Then when they get what that want but never work it because they have been bumped lol So seniority is king at my company. Thank God we big so I'm at a division where my seniority not that bad but it's still bad lol

8:42 I get this so much in OMSI 2: Chicago Downtown! I'll _pass_ the stop after slowing down a bit, already past the stop, they'll pull the cord, to me, for the next stop, and they'll complain for their error. I've gotten into the habit of slamming on the brake if I've passed a stop I'm skipping, the light comes on, and I can still see the stop.

4:30 I can board/alight anyplace that's safe. My company tells us during training what we're bus drivers, not fare collectors. My responsibility is safe operation, customer service and safe operation. I'm simply unwilling to get in an argument with a stranger over a matter of less than $4, I want to make my EOL, have a smoke, eat and pee. Everyone is welcome on my bus, 95+% of my riders pay even when I leave my door open and wander off. If someone needs a free ride I'm happy to accomodate. I can board a rider wherever. I had a newcomer to my city & country who literally just didn't know how to hail a bus, I boarded him midstop, educated him as to how to recognize stops and he said thank you. Easy. I've been driving about 14 months and have had fewer than 5 negative rider interactions. I've had to ask 3 people to leave my bus, and have never had to ask twice. (I have a very deep voice, and am very loud, I'm not the least bit tough, but I sound tough) If a rider is truly discourteous (ultra rare) I remind myself that I drive a Lexus and they have 9 teeth.

Totally different here in the UK. It doesn't matter how many years you've been a driver, the shifts are the same for every driver. They just go round in a rota. At least that's my experience. As for the rest of the problems, they are pretty much the same.

Very different passenger type, here in Brisbane, Australia. No complaints about speed, cleanliness, on-time running (OK, 1 in 50,000 maybe) I never run early, however, driving in a city, we're always going to be late, especially in afternoon peak (I don't drive splits, or earlies. Late shifts up to 1:30am only) Time for you to move to Australia? 🙂
