That's actually one of the most disappointing things about what we've seen of next gen controllers. Seems Sony and Microsoft are content with another 7 or 8 years of putting bandaids on stick aim instead of trying to offer a solution, despite there already being a solution. Imagine how much better motion aim can get if everyone was trying to adopt it and improve and iterate on it. Nintendo is doing a great job and the motion aim implementation is really good in Splatoon, but there's a lot of lost potential across console shooters in general.

@ThatSrb2DUDE Motion Controls are only good because there is no aim assist and your weapon is not 100% accurate. That is why Motion is OP AF. If guns were 100% acurate and had tiny hitboxes (like most shooters) I don't think Motion Controls would be good at all.

@@Bradex. Actually they'd still be great. I sometimes play 1st person or 3rd person shooters on PC with Switch Pro controller and motion aiming forced on, and even though the game wasn't made with that in mind at all, it's still 10 times better than analog sticks, and much more fun and skill based because you're actually doing all the aiming yourself instead of the game doing half of it for you with its "aim assist".

Last year, my classmates went to our house because of some project we need to do. They dont know splatoon and i wanted to show how the game looks like. Motion controlling is one of the best innovation in gaming history it feels natural to me. I never liked shooting games because of aim assist for the most part it never felt too accurate for me and sometimes even with the game cheating on my behalf i would still miss shot. I didn't like mouse and keyboard it just felt too disconnected no CenterPoint for the reticule, however with gyro controlling or motion controlling these adjustments to myself felt natural i then started playing a shooter game i actually liked. For other platforms I've played on with gyro it felt amazing however games like overwatch fortnite and Palladin all fail to get the same exact splatoon replicated feeling. This is because there is no button to recenter the camera.

On that same token, I would say aim assist hurts gaming because it casualises an aspect of gameplay that requires skill. It just sucks that with all the innovation that has gone into motion controls. Companies are still hellbent on avoiding motion controls and just sticking with aim assist.

What I find most ironic is that Nintendo considered a casual none hardcore demographic of gamers in Splatoon those same non hardcore gamers surpasses those who are considered professional gamers from the use of aim assist using no aim assist

Faráday yeah tbh I really don’t understand the negative stigma around motion controls. Ever since srb2dude introduced me to it has been a positive change in my life. It has cured my depression, stopped the chronic aches and pains in my thumbs from the carpel tunnel I had from using sticks so much, and it just makes the game more FUN. Hi I’m going to be the shining light in the comments section between motion and sticks. As a motion control player, I do believe that you should give motion controls at least a try once! It may or may not work out for you. If it doesn’t really work out for you, that’s okay too! Everyone comes with their preferences, and not everyone is in the competitive scene that much (where motion controls are extremely prelevant). Some people are used to stick controls because of how many shooters have stick controls, and that’s fine. Just use what you feel comfortable with, but try other controls once in a while, it doesn’t hurt to do so.

Former S1 and S2 stick player here. I promise you. Once you switch to motion and get used to it, the skill difference you will notice is night and day. Play motion for a week. And I promise you will not be able to go back.

It literally took me a week to learn motion controls in Splatoon 1, and my controls finally caught up with what my brain wanted to do. The biggest hurdle was learning how much to compensate my aim for how fast I was moving vs whatever it is that I'd be aiming at. What helped a lot was tracking the shooting range dummies with my crosshair while I was swimming and jumping around and popping up from swimming with surprise attacks. When I got more consistent I took it online vs. real people and the rest is history. I think of the controller as an extension of myself, which is why my motion sens. is set to 0 for more-or-less 1-to-1 aim, something that sticks cannot do. Of course, sticks are still used for broad turns. But to snap to anything I want to shoot at within my field of vision, motion controls.

Exact same thing for me, it was a struggle learning how to use Motion Controls for the 1st few weeks; the fact that you had to move your controller up, down, left and right while simultaneously pressing buttons and thinking of strategies on how to outplay the other team all seemed but impossible. But now, after spending so much time with Motion Controls, it is literally just muscle memory at this point; I literally can't play Sticks because I'm not used to my wrists staying still.

Tip for getting into motion controls! Start with a low sensitivity, jumping into a high sensitivity is what made me frustrated, but if you start out with a lower sensitivity you can work your way up and it will feel a lot less jarring. ^^

I have over 800 hours in Splatoon 2. I do fine against X-rank players (I've been matched with you in League, there's still a friend request from July lying around somewhere) and Inner Agent 3 is a joke to me. I've never used gyro controls, and *Splatoon is the first shooter I've ever played.* So... motion just doesn't feel right to me. While motion has a ceiling similar to that of a mouse, the fact that I have to hold the controller off of a stabilizing surface (e.g. mouse on a desk) means that motion feels, well, unstable. Gyro requires me to hold the controller _perfectly steady_ to track a target smoothly, whereas with sticks I can just use my well-trained right thumb to carefully adjust the camera on a target while using the left stick for positioning.

Aim assist, auto-aim, auto-snap, auto-track, sticky reticle; all of this is the equivalent of training wheels that gyro players *don't* need. But you play with what you want, just saying it's a fact that gyro-aim is better.

As I never played Splatoon 1, I was actually introduced to Splatoon 2 because it came with the Switch as a package. Anyhow, motion control was the default so I just learned to play with it and couldn't imagine playing any other way.

I recommend people to try playing Splatoon 2 with motion controls- in *tabletop mode* on a desk of some sort. The good thing about having the Switch in tabletop mode is that the controller is right up close to the console meaning the input lag will be so minimal, unlike in TV mode. This makes aiming even easier. You might need a Switch playstand for this though to have the console screen in perfect position. There are only 2 major problems with playing in tabletop mode: 1. You can't charge the console + do a wired internet connection at the same time. It's one or the other. 2. You can't properly record or livestream your gameplay.

It's in general an excuses. I have terrible motion sickness, so bad I can't ride a car without getting sick unless I'm at the front seat, looking forward, not doing anything and praying we don't have to brake at all. I got used to motion controls in Splatoon very quickly and I don't get sick at all. My eye get tired after a few hours, that's all. You get used to the camera moving in a couple hours tops.

Gonna be honest here, im so used to sticks because i hold my switch at low angles, which means when i use motion i have to hold my switch up, and I'm not really up for that lol (i think im decent with sticks but i use motion every once in a while.) I think STICKS are not bad, but It should have another aditional option to use them. 1.- motion control 2.- sticks (as they are right now) NEW 3.- Sticks, but focused on the center, when you move the stick AIM moves too, but if you leave the stick, the AIM automatically returns to the center, and if you need to turn around you only have to push a button (maybe the L) and while you still push that button the AIM movement changes from focused to free movement, so if you leave the button, the AIM returns to the original function (automatically return to the center). Gyroscope aim is one of the biggest developments in gaming in the past few years. I really hope Sony and Microsoft implement it into later generation consoles and it really bridges the gap between controls with mouse and keyboard. I was a console user for many years before switching to pc and falling in love with the feeling of aiming with a mouse. When I bought a switch, splatoon 2 felt so strange to play to begin with but after a while it opened my eyes to how amazing gyro aim can be for games on home consoles! If anyone's read this far and is interested in gyroscope aim there's a good video by Nerrel called "Motion Control and the Rejection of Progress". It sums up it's current situation pretty well.

Many stick players (those that always claim stick superiority) usually don’t know that most console shooter games actually have built in aim assists. They almost always have to make up for the fact that sticks are not great. They have played most of their lives doing 80 to 90% of the aiming and an assistant does the rest. Not to say they don’t get good at it but when you aren’t aware of the assistance you can get a false sense of skill. They come into a game like Splatoon and it’s like making someone with a joystick play against a mouse user. Sure you can play sticks and even do pretty well but imagine how much better you could be using the tools provided. The other side of the argument is that when you get accustomed to motion controls your stick control goes downhill. Right now I’m playing Dauntless and I’m really missing the motion controls, my camera control is horrendous lol

As a stick player, I thoroughly tried motion controls and i can definitely see the appeal. It's so much easier to aim and gameplay feels way smoother. I don't play controller games very much other than splatoon and when I do i only every play with stick aim, especially when it's the only option available so motion control is something i definitely wish i could use to it's potential

I played with motion after reaching A+ on splatoon 1. Tested stick on splatoon 2 and immediately switched to motion control. My only problem is that I still use the stick when aiming left and right instead of using motion altogether.

That's how I play 80% of the time and it would never cross my mind to use sticks. The thing you gotta keep in mind is that with gyro you still use the sticks to some extend. You're not gonna be moving your entire torso/hands wildly on handheld, just a bit around to aim. It's just as good as playing motions on a TV.

To be honest, before I started using Motion controls I got to S+ with only sticks and I was doing really good I could compete with a motion control player if just depending on how you train with sticks, sticks would also need to count with your movement in order to adjust much easier and to hit the player sniping with stick sounds hard but it's actually easy you can even flick on a player as you were a motion control user it takes time to adjust but over time you can play with sticks I played with the sensitivity set to 5 and was annihilating my competition just practice with it and keep in mind you have no aim assist something I really love

TL,DR If you like sticks, use them, but if you wish to push yourself to your maximum potential, use motion. Because motion provides many options that sticks do not. Even something as simple as being able to quickly turn and shoot the ground to get out of your opponent's ink during a fight is a game deciding move that sticks don't allow you to do.

I played splatoon 1 with sticks all the way up to around level 65, (which is my level on splatoon 1 now). In spla2n, i started using motion controls at around level 40, and boy did I improve.

I couldn't imagine playing this game with sticks. I used detached Joy cons with maximum motion sensitivity I only use the stick to turn lol. I really like the Dynamo and there's no way I would be competent with it at all if I couldn't make last-second micro adjustments during it's slow swing animation. when you can turn around in the blink of an eye and shoot someone accurately that's behind you you'll be a motion control believer

The closest you can get to motion controls with sticks is getting good with the max sensitivity, but you’ve got to give your 100% to make extremely small turns to adjust your aim multiple times a second, and sometimes it’s just exhausting and gets to the point where it’s not even fun... I think I’m gonna try motion controls.

Idk I have tried to. Play motion but it's hard since I play in handheld more then the TV. I use a sensetivity of -3 and suprisingly I'm still X rank. Once in a while I try TV mode with motion but it's uncomfortable. Idk. maybe I'll go try it out more soon.
