I'm old enough to start thinking 2050 would be nice. Edit: I'm assuming 2050 will be some kind of 'nice' era to be alive, which may or may not be reasonable.

This reminds me of my college professor, who was in love with Roman times. He always said you would last about two minutes in Rome, I as a historian of the time would last about five. I have never forgotten this and continue to be amused.

That silver mine quest in Markath is one of my favorite story lines in Skyrim. If you ever get back into the game I recommend getting the Project AHO mod. Really good questline there too; better than the Bethesda quests dare I say...

I mentioned in the original video that if I somehow ended up in Classical Athens, the first thing I would do is study up on the local language and then once I have familiarized myself with it enough, I would see as many of Sophocles’ plays as possible and document them for future generations. Because Sophocles is said to have written more than 120 plays, but only 7 have survived. If I documented all the others, I feel I would be doing a great service to history, just like Herodotus.

"Ancient version of [language] is unintelligable to its modern counterpart." TRUE! Don't believe me? I'll illustrate: Old Dutch (~1083): "Hebban olla uogala nestas bagunnan, hinase hic anda thu, uuat unbidan uue nu?" Modern Dutch (2024): "Alle vogels zijn begonnen aan hun nesten, behalve jij en ik, waar wachten we nog op?" (English: "All birds have started building their nests, except for you and me, what are we waiting for?") "Hebban" -> "hebben" ("to have") [wrong auxillary in this context in Modern Dutch] "Olla" -> "alle" ("all, every") "Uogala" -> "vogels" ("birds") ["vogelen" is also correct, but considered old fashioned; "vogels" is better] "Nestas" -> "nesten" ("nests") "Bagunnan" -> "begonnen" ("begun, started") "Hinase" ["hit na se"] -> "tenzij" ["het en zij" ("it is not" [old fashioned])] ("unless") [wrong word in this context in Modern Dutch, we'd use "behalve" ("except for")] "Hic" -> "ik" ("I") "Thu" -> "jij" ("you, informal, singular") "UUat" -> "wat" ("what") [not the best word in this context in Modern Dutch] "Unbidan" -> "ontbeiden" ("to wait") [no longer in use, we use "wachten"] "UUe" -> "we" ("we") "Nu" -> "nu" ("now") [not the best word in this context in Modern Dutch] Also, the word order is very different in Modern Dutch

Actually even modern Greek is similar enough to ancient Greek. Also all modern Greeks are forced to learn some ancient Greek at school l, so we can at least understand the Attica dialect.

2:42 bit misleading, this makes it sound as though Greek existed back then as it does now and didn't evolve. We just got a lot of old-ass Greek texts (that are not mutually intelligible with the Greek of today) which were used to help decipher the Rosetta Stone. The dialect of Greek it was written in was also not a dialect which modern Greek is descended from iirc
