It’s funny I’m currently in college for design. A course I took this trimester pushed me a lot. Drawing objects I would never draw on my own, like Victorian homes and furniture for an example. I was doing 6-10 full pages of ink drawings. Though all the skills taught were known to me and I was a more advanced student for the class it was the practice that made a difference. Around 2019 I started working on human portraits, I did a pencil sketch and it took me 4 hours to do, not inked, refined and barely looked like the model. But now as of 2021, I did 4 portraits fully inked with a pencil sketch underneath in 2 hours and all of them looked like their respective models. Hearing “practice makes perfect” was always hard to hear. I’ve never had time for art because of school, sports, work, etc. but it makes a difference. My skill, and speed improvements were astounding to me. But it was a build up of other skills too like Michelle said in this video. Great video and I hope my comment might help others with perspective too :)

I feel like this is true specially for comic/webcomic artists. Because many artists says that you should start your comic now and that even if your art is pretty bad it will get better as you do the comic. But...it won't. Yes some artists get better as theyd do the comics because they're actually practicing, they already learnt the fundamentals and they have organic and noticeable improvement. When a begginer artists decides to make a comic, they will not learn any drawing fundamentals from drawing it. They will keep drawing the same characters with the same meh designs until forever, they will not learn anatomy or anything. They will get better at making comics but not at art fundamentals, and if they've spent that time they used for the comic learning the fundamentals they would've gotten a lot better, specially because making comics takes A LOT of time.

Improvement is intelligence, not about repeating like a recorder. You study your objects and rather observe them for a long time. Practicing randomly won't help anyone. You can practice forever, but if you don't think about what you are doing, it will never be better.

People always tell me "Learn the fundementals like anatomy and perspective!1!!1!", but they never tell me WHERE to learn this stuff. I always end up feeling lost, because I never know what exactly is considered "correct/efficient practise" and I never know what exactly to look for so that I can practise. Like yeah, I could pull up a photo reference, but what exactly am I supposed to be focusing on? Am I supposed to just look at the photo and try to make sense of it by myself? I always just end up frustrated in the end and end up avoiding the thing I initially was going to practise. Am I making sense at all? 🏃

practice def does help to improve in anything, but its what you practice that matters, if I wanted to play piano again, I wouldn't just practice the same 2 chords over and over again, I would introduce new chords every once and awhile to keep improving. if I want to learn how to draw cars, start small and focus on parts and then expand what I am drawing (i really should take this advice myself, but cars are so finicky to draw lol)

Hmmm 🤔 you sound a little snobbish, I wouldn't take any advice from you too 🤣

@@kuroneko3837 It's not snobbism, it's satisfaction. I have no problem admitting that my art is far from perfect and there are plenty of artists way more talented than I am, but this friend is a special case. I use the term 'friend' pretty loosely here because it's a complicated story. She made it her life's mission in Middle and High School to drag me down and keep me below her by any means necessary. I thought she was my best friend but she was more like my bully. She stole from me multiple times. She would lie to my friends about stuff I did to make them stop talking to me. She started writing a side blog who's sole purpose was to publicly make fun of me. When I started dating someone she aggressively started flirting with him and stole him from me. She didn't even like him, she just wanted to make sure I couldn't have him. I know this because she was bragging about it to one of her friends who later told me. But ooooh man was she good at manipulating me into believing she was my friend, which is why I stayed. And years later, she's still doing all of that catty shit. I thought maybe she had matured but I was wrong. She has several drawings in her Instagram that she made JUST to spite me and push me down, even one from today. But for once in my damn life I've been able to push through, to prove that I'm not as low as her and it feels good. I imagine anyone else that's suffered 7+ years of emotional manipulation and gaslighting would feel the same. But I suppose without the context my original comment does come off as me just being a jackass.

I've grown up playing music (it was pretty much required but I did enjoy it), and in music classes you're taught that the way you practice is by repeating the specific measures that you mess up on over and over until you get just that section perfect. i hadn't realized until now, but art is the same way, you practice the little really specific bits that you struggle with over and over rather than practicing a whole figure or the whole animal or whatever

I agree with your video overall that diversifying what you draw and studying smart is ultimately more productive than blindly practicing. But there's something that bothered me. I often get the feeling in your videos that "drawing primarily anime = not productive" which isn't really true. Implying the notion that "drawing anime results in bad art" is unhelpful at best and harmful at worst. It feeds into a negative stereotype and doesn't address the real issue with beginner artists. The issue is more commonly a lack of education and practice in fundamental concepts. So it'd be more helpful to tell beginners it's not an issue with the style they admire, it's more that they need to seriously study fundamental concepts. Any good anime artist is also good at fine arts, technical drawing, design, etc. So you can definitely have meaningful practice while drawing anime. It's not like anime artists study art significantly differently from western artists. Just look at Krenz Cushart and the type of homework he has his students do. Anyways, I know you joke in good faith and don't have anything against people who draw anime. I believe you're trying to help and I appreciate the advice you give in all your videos. I just hope new artists watching don't feel bad about drawing anime and that as a community we do better to dispel negative stereotypes :x.

You can follow animators / artists on IG and a lot of the time I catch some who host 1 day workshops or porfolio reviews -- and also depending on conventions whether if they are online or resume back to in person someday, that's also a great opportunity to ask people. Posting on forums also sounds like a good idea, but of course if someone says something you find questionable, see if theyre a reputable person you should be listening to anyway. But in general feedback from an audience even if they're not professional artists help too as you can see how your work translated to a general audience (Which is what animators / comic artists do too)

Reasons why I strayed away from art - My mental health, depression, medical conditions, and sleep conditions. Artists must be considerate of their health and mental health it must come first. - Failure - Pessimism - Perfectionism - Feeling I am not improving - Is my Art enough? I’ve learned being this pessimistic doesn’t help except accepting it’s okay to feel. Because your feelings will come and go especially in your dreams if you have experienced running away from yourself. The reality is older adults who are professional artists or the elderly artists never told you keep on practicing doesn’t help the younger artists. What only matters is how you draw and paint. Because the way you draw and paint are crucial to developing your art skills, and receiving real constructive criticism not some dickhead who’s an ass to an artist who wants real constructive criticism not someone who fixes their art.

Use skeletal, muscular, geometric forms, 3D shapes and video reference if the animal moving. Not just still images and artwork. Aim to really understand it.

@@mewTripled I was surprised when KZbin recommended your video with a title I didn't recognize. I was like, "it's too early for a new video ! and there's no way there's a video I haven't seen yet!" what a nice surprise~~ :3

Anyone wanna hear my sob story. I have been doing art for 17 years. I practiced everyday. I drew every single day. And never improved. My art looks like begginners level. I know so many people that have only started drawing for onee week and their art looks 100 times better than mine. One of my friends just siad that she learnt how to draw manga from watching anime compared to me that had brought so many books and watched so many videos on how and my art still looking shit. So yeah fuck the whole practice = perfect thing. It doesn't work. Doesn't help that I mentally cannot erase anything in my art and that I go into it thinking my art looks awesome so then I notice zero mistakes only to notice them all later, like im just so optimistically blind to everything. But If I even erase anything ad nnotice any mistake then I become too perfectionistic and get too stressed.

ik its wrong to comapre art to others. But comparing my art to others actually did help me improve a tiny bit cuz I realised how art was suppsoed to look versus how it wasnt. For instance, now I kinda know when I draw a head too big. But in general I just dont notice details, even though I have autism, I just like am not detail oriented, or im detail oriented with all the wrong things. But yeah, following tutorials never worked for me. Currently, Im just trying to speedpaint and tracing approach as well (not posting the tracing ofc) I also think my dyscalculia may be getting in the way of my learning since it stops me from understanding perspective.

What kind of paper do u use btw these drawings r so Lively ❤️❤️❤️❤️😘 love ur colour pencil drawings also r u burnishing ur drawings and what kind of paper/sketch book r u using?
@mewTripled3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I'm not burnishing anything, but the sketchbook I got was when I was in Nara, Japan. I can't find it anywhere online, but the paper reminds me of a nice inbetween of regular smooth paper and water color paper (but not as thick or textured).
