Why Your Bearings Don't Spin Freely, and How to Fix It

Most of the time, brand new 608/608RS bearings don't spin very well, even when they're brand new. They may feel sluggish, or like the ball bearing has more resistance than it should. Here's how to make them spin like nobody's business. Great for fidget spinners or any application where your ball bearing needs less friction (for me, windmills!)

(For an extremely low load & low speed application) I just tried this with engine degreaser followed by water and they spin like a dream, way less drag than factory grease. I then sprayed with CRC 556 so there'd be *some* corrosion protection, and it slowed down quite a lot (although still better than factory grease.

Good call... I totally agree that the people "whining" that this is a dumb idea are valid....but they're talking about "this bearing under the prescribed load [Guy on a Skateboard] I'm really glad you mentioned that point. I don't know if I agree with the use of just WD-40, I agree it can be used to clean the excess lubrication for the excess load off... but I'ad advise something like isopropyl alcohol followed shorly after by a White Lithium grease to clean the existing grease and re-lubricate with a lighter grease for this double bearing application.

Good suggestion. I like washing mine out with isopropyl alcohol, then relube with kerosene or WD40. Like you said...High speed, low load.

Yeah, definitely good vid Had my ball bearing in my 3d printer to spin very hard and making vibrating noise, sometimes it even prevented spinning of the rod and i apparently i disassembeled my step motor, put out the rod with the bearings and just sprayed them with WD. And they started to do they should do - keep the rod spinning freely with no contact with the walls! Sir, thanks a lot!

HEY!!!! You never put a link in the description!!!!!!!! What is that spray that you used?!?! Where can I get it!?!??? JK, man. Great easy and simple, AND SHORT VIDEO. I've seen other vide where I'd have to take the bearing apart, clean in gasoline, etc, etc. Tries your method and worked like a charm, THANKS for sharing (and getting right to the point too!)

Wd40 is usually readily available. I guess any thin oil should work similarly.

Some sealed bearing has the bearing grease inside them. The bearing will be spinning smoothly after the grease melting becomes oil. You may find this application in drive shaft cv joint, idler pulley bearing.

Ordered my first bearings for my first project that needed them and I ran into this exact problem. I will try this tonight when I have the time but I think you just saved my project, AND taught me something valuable. Thank you! I would like this video twice if it was possible. Oh, and if you're reading this: Do I have to remove the side for this to work or will the WD-40 find it's way in there and do the job anyway? I got one pack with a plastic cover and one with a metall one.. :p Thanks! /Robert, Sweden

The bearing components are properly named the inner race, the outer race, the balls and the ball cage.

You do "ruin" them but it dosent make them unusable, the wd-40 pretty much only cleans them pushing out all the grease and eventually will dry up itself, risking damage to your bearing, your best bet to insure longevity it to re oil it with a thinner long-lasting than wd40 or to periodically hit it again with wd40 to prevent it from drying out

So, for orbital gears in a motor for an eBike, leave it as is. I like to save energy by reducing friction. But long life is better than faster for a short life.

Man... I thought I just had some chinesium shit because they didn't spin worth a damn. Hit them with some white lithium spray grease and after about 30-60 seconds spinning it they work much better now, perfect for a filament roller where the max load is no more than 5kg across 4 of them lol
